      Short runway in a northern latitude, marine clime with probable wet or damp runway should register with the pilot as "If one thing goes wrong, TOGA." When he heard the first officer announce, "No spoilers," that was his signal to stop trying to "save the landing." and to either go around or go on to the next long runway.

    This was a really peculiar event for me, I was working as a pilot at the time and was in the office at a different airfield from this one when I saw this on the news, then one of our pilots who was airborne came on the radio as I was watching this saying he's gone off the end, and I couldn't twig how he knew and for a moment I was confused, then I heard sirens outside and realised we had just had an overrun on our airfield, a light twin-engine freight aircraft failed to get airborne on take-off and overran in the attempted abort going into a field at the end of the runway

      1: Turning the engines off is not SOP in an emergency as this on the Bae/Avro. Engines 1 and 4 run the generators powering the AC and DC-buses, while engines 2 and 3 run the hydraulic pumps for the yellow and green system respectively. If you turn them all off you lose AC-electrics (unless you landed with the APU running and the generator on), and most of the hydraulics. The DC-pump in the yellow system will maintain pressure for braking, but the standby generator in the green system will not be able to run, because it needs the 3100-psi system pressure that the EDP on engine 3 produces.
      Doing this on purpose defeats safety. The emergency systems are there for when things go wrong, but degrading the airplane on purpose is not a good move.
      And in the end, the engines produce very little thrust on idle. Should it have been of any use to them, it would have to be done immediately upon landing, which is counter-intuitive.
      snl.no/Stord_lufthamn,_S%C3%B8rstokken
      Clicking this link takes you to a Norwegian site about the airport in question, but look at the image on the right. It shows the end of the RWY where the aircraft went over the edge. Had they turned hard left, they would have gone over an equally steep edge. To the right was a smaller edge, and maybe they could have saved the day by turning that way.
      Could it have been prevented by going to the right? Maybe, maybe not.

    6.6 seconds is a hell of a long time before hitting the brakes coming in slightly fast and beyond the normal touchdown zone on a short runway and the spoilers not deploying. With hindsight, as we all know is a wonderful thing, they would have done better using the forward momentum, going to full power and taking off again. Thanks for a nicely done video. I'm looking t a few issues: 1. The Airport: The airport is in a region prone to cold, damp weather. It rains a lot. Given the short runway, why not invest in grooving it? And why not fill in one side or the other of the runway to provide a "shoulder?" 2. Given weather conditions and a non-grooved runway, turning off the anti-skid (like antilock brakes in a car) was not a good idea. The pilots should have let the brakes work as designed. 3. Another commenter here thought that the pilots should have tried to deploy spoilers a second time and I agree with this. 4. Maintenance: Atlantic Airways was at fault here for not taking meticulous care of the spoilers and flaps. On other aircraft, three systems help you stop. You have reverse thrust, spoilers and flaps, and friction brakes. On a wet runway, reverse thrust becomes very important. On a short wet runway, it's even more important. Hence, if Atlantic chooses to operate an aircraft without reverse thrust, its maintenance crew needs to make certain the other two braking systems (spoilers/flaps and friction brakes) work correctly every time, all the time. Alaska Airlines flies 737s routinely to airports with very short runways (Dutch Harbor) without a problem. The 737 has reverse thrust. It's a bigger airplane that may not be cost-effective for Atlantic Airways' contract, but the margin of safety is better.

    • @hb1338
      @hb1338 Рік тому +1

      Wild speculation. There is NO evidence that the inspection and maintenance of the aircraft was faulty. My road car has anti-lock brakes - in wet or slippery conditions (e.g snow), they are much less effective than manual braking because they are unable to cadence brake.

    Wonderful quality simulation as usual! What can a flight crew do in a situation with tight landing margins where a critical, mechanical component involved in stopping the aircraft fails? It almost feels like a betrayal. The spoilers dump lift putting more weight down on the tires and runway so braking is far less effective on landing with the wings still producing significant lift. Landing on a short runway with nothing but rocky cliffs at each end is terrifying in and of itself so the crew and passengers must have become increasingly horrified as the plane rolled on and on. Just unimaginable and frightening simply being immersed in the experience of this top quality simulation. I felt like I was in the doomed plane. I hope I got out alive!

    Due to the information provided in the video I have to points:
    1. the touch-down speed had been estimated 112 kts, but it was 120 kts in fact.
    2. landing on runway 33 implied a small tailwind component, but how much was it in fact?
    So having chosen runway 15 as initially planned to avoid even a small tailwind component as well as touching down at a slightly lower speed might have avoided the crash.
    RIP to the victims.
