    Shady loves his foul line drills. They feel so awkward to me. I never really could feel comfortable trying them, but I'm definitely going to have to remember the forearm pointing forward to stop from the occasional pull. Also, Shady was at my local center about a month ago and made sure to come over and talk to me see how I've been progressing. Definitely a good guy that knows what he is talking about.

      @@CantingMonk I throw a decent amount of practice, and will occasionally do one or two, though my biggest issue for awhile was drifting right on the approach, so I had to figure out a better way to focus on that. My buddy that I bowl with all the time actually noticed it. He was like "dude, you haven''t drifted once", then I told him I had been working hard on it.

      because youre not actually supopsed to let the ball go that late.. youre supposed to incorporate your approach into helping you carry the weight of the ball in your backswing. all these foul drills and only learning to wrist and release the ball one way, is completely not how the best bowlers bowl..

      Another easy way to stop pulling the ball is concentrate on your hand under the ball point ring finger to your target follow through.

    I love this, I have of recent realized that I need to make sure my forearm inside is pointing to my mark. What is interesting is that it does not feel natural but it works great, so I want to get use to this feeling. The other thing is I realized is that I can keep my forearm pointing to my mark and adjust my hand position to ensure that my thumb comes out first, how wonderful.

    Reminds me of my coach, Mr. Rolf Gauger, many years ago focusing on letting the ball do the work. I came to him with the ball cupped and trying to generate revs. He straightened out my arm and taught me to feel the moment where the ball releases from the thumb and naturally rides on the fingers through release. Once you develop it, the ball is no longer "thrown", but is released. This also puts the power in the pins creating great pin action.

    I always used to pull the ball later in the block when I was trying to get my speed up. My arm would always pull inwards, due to me trying to rip it so hard and it sacrificed accuracy. Focusing on keeping a straighter follow through and not trying to huck it as hard as I can has helped alot.

    hey you all, I have a tip for you, here goes. Rest the ball on you index
    finger and the thumb side of your hand. do that and your forearm will
    have to face your target. One more thing, if your using more boards
    for hook open up [ point your toes to the right or left for the lefties.
    I think what you will find when you put the weight of ball on the
    outside of hand, the ball will go a little longer and have a strong
    back end. take care and let me know if you try this. thanks

      I am going to try the hand suggestions. I already turn my feet as I move left, my issue is getting length out of a sanded ball (hooking at the arrows on fresh oil) or getting a less aggressive reaction on a polished (plenty of length, but not getting through the pins right)
      If that don't work, I might just have to change my finger pitch or just get good at lofting the gutter or half the lane.

    • @SirJoelsuf1
      @SirJoelsuf1 3 роки тому +1

      It applies especially to 2h bowlers since they're using even bigger parts of their body...their legs, as well as the forearm like what Mike was talking about here. As a speed dominant player I can miss one board left and usually get some hold no matter the condition. If a 2h bowler misses that way, it's over. They won't go brooklyn they'll take three off the left.
      My doubles partner is 2 handed. When he pulls the ball it does not end well.

    I’m still not clear on what “pulling the ball” actually is, and more importantly, what causes it. Is it using your right arm muscles to pull down? Pulling your left shoulder closed?

    • @MetalGearDavid57
      @MetalGearDavid57 3 роки тому +3

      A lot of things can cause it. One is usually being impatient and not letting the ball complete its swing before you start pushing the ball. What happens is your hand is pushing the ball forward while it's going backwards, and since most bowling balls weigh more than hands, your hand will come around to the side of it, causing you to "pull" it left of target for a right-hander, right of target for a left-hander.
      Another one would be a backswing problem. When your ball swings backwards, you should be able to draw a straight line through the ball, your head, and your target. Some people get the ball swinging behind their back at such a crooked angle on the backswing that it has no way of clearing through your leg and you instinctly force it outside your body, causing you to then pull it back and miss inside of target.
      I used to have the first problem, and I have overall corrected it by just keeping my hand behind the ball. If your hand is behind the ball, you can actually feel when you're pushing it on the downswing too early and you'll instinctively lay off of it until it completes its swing.

    • @baTonkaTruck
      @baTonkaTruck 3 роки тому

      @@MetalGearDavid57 Thanks for the detailed explanation that makes sense. So here they're referring basically to "missing your target left" (for a right-hander).
      I definitely have the second problem you listed, ball going behind my body on the backswing. I actually can't do the modern "swimming" motion and point my lead (left) arm straight at target because I have extremely flexible shoulders and long arms, so the ball just naturally goes way behind my body. Even when I really focus on going straight back, my backswing is just really inconsistent because there's zero physical feedback. I'm working on actually flying my lead arm more perpendicular (towards the left wall) so my natural range of motion restricts the backswing plane more.

    • @MetalGearDavid57
      @MetalGearDavid57 3 роки тому +2

      @@baTonkaTruck I did have a problem with my backswing before, but my coach corrected it immediately before it became a bad habit. You can try using a shorter push away going more forward and towards the center of your body rather than away, and use a little bit of spine tilt. This would give you a little bit of a figure 8 swing(not as pronounced as someone like a Wes Malott or Walter Ray) but enough to keep your swing away from your back in the backswing so you have room to keep the ball close to your ankle on the front swing. This alone made shooting the 10 pin (I'm right handed) just automatic for me because I had no problems angling out my ball.
      But my biggest tip would be to get a coach or someone who knows a bit about bowling to just stand behind you and record you. Maybe even set up a camera zoomed at your release point. Doing this for a year brought me literally from a 190 bowler to a 200 bowler.

    • @baTonkaTruck

      @@MetalGearDavid57 Thanks! Yeah I obsessively record my practice sessions in slow-mo (240fps), even posted a couple videos of my shot on my youtube page, feel free to have a look, I always appreciate feedback.
      Any recommendations for remote/online coaching? I looked at kegel but idk.

    • @MetalGearDavid57
      @MetalGearDavid57 3 роки тому +1

      @@baTonkaTruck Yep just saw your vids. Approach and release are perfect. The only thing is, as you mentioned, your swing gets behind you quite a bit causing you to throw straighter than you would want to. I assume this would create problems with your 10 pin shooting? Anyway though, try doing a push away towards the center of your body, or even more to the left of your body.
      As for online coaching, I have no idea as I've learned my whole life on the lanes either working by myself or with a coach. About 5 years ago, I did try Reddit, and they had a pretty supportive community there at the time. Just post your video and they'll give you a few tips.

    Like so many half-assed bowling instructional videos, this one only provides half of the answers. True, keeping the fingers at 6 o'clock with the forearm facing forward is a proper setup. However, releasing the ball straight as the coach indicates will not produce counter-clockwise rotation. It will be end over end. Something else must occur in the release to achieve that proper rotation. Unfortunately, the coach ignores this problem. I would really like to hear a good answer.

  • @Jackal_Blitz

    Really wish you guys had explained how the drill addresses the problem a bit more. The footnotes on the clips help a little, but standing at the foul line with my arm facing forward seems to have little to do with grip pressure, forcing the ball, etc. You gotta tie these things together for your viewers.

    • @SirJoelsuf1
      @SirJoelsuf1 3 роки тому +1

      It really depends where your target is and where your feet are at. If your shoulders are too open you'll miss right a lot. Are you speed dominant/rotation challenged? Missing right is common is you are that type of bowler.
      What I discovered is that there are two options if you are speed dominant/rotation challenged like I am.
      1) Carve a line at the gutter (1-5 board) during practice. Literally take a light oil or dead reactive ball down to 240/360 grit and feed the ball to the 1 board from the 5 board. This will give you room out there. You can then ideally feed the ball to that point without worrying about dumping it in the right channel.
      2) A technique that I call "riding the track." You take a VERY aggressive ball and feed it from the 15 board to the 10 board. Similar to the frozen rope (right up 15) but your shoulders are a little more open. However, you'll need a SUPER aggressive ball for this if you are speed dominant/rotation challenged.

    • @couchistopdog

      @@SirJoelsuf1 thanks for the info! I definitely am a speed dominant bowler interesting that’s more common for us. I generally stand on about 17 and try to shoot straight up 10 most of the time to start the night. When you say super aggressive do you mean early hooking or a lot of backend?

For that reason, we tend to be a bit more general with the tips and verbiage as the more specific we get, the less bowlers will tend to identify with it. We will try to be more aware of explaining some of the common terms used in bowling a bit better moving forward. Thank you!
