- Here we go!
Covering the mighty MOTORHEAD. This will be the FIRST song I've covered that's NOT in the BIG 4 line up!
Why MOTOHEAD? And WHY SACRIFICE?
Well, this song was actually a request from an artist who's an amazing musician and songwriter, someone I have a great amount of respect for, and someone who's also a dear friend. Mr. Michael Poulsen from VOLBEAT.
I was chatting with Michael several weeks back. We were talking about the BIG 4 covers I was doing and he simply asked, "Hey dude, what if you did MOTORHEAD - Sacrifice?"
When Michael mentioned Sacrifice, it immediately made me think back to my first tour with ANTHRAX in 2012. ANTHRAX was supporting MOTORHEAD on their winter European tour.
That was the first time I met Lemmy, Mikkey Dee, and Phil Campbell and had the privilege to watch the band every night and on occasion, hang out as well. (The night off in London with Phil was one for the story books! I think my liver is still recovering! lol.)
I remember watching Mikkey play Sacrifice and it was one of the songs that always stood out for me.
So when Michael asked me to cover it, and ultimately play a cover that's not a BIG 4, it made perfect sense.
MOTORHEAD has arguably been a major influence to so many bands and artists, including all the BIG 4 bands! Which makes it even more appropriate to cover.
I hope you enjoy the cover as much as I enjoyed playing it.
One of the biggest challenges I've discovered doing these covers is trying to stay with the other drummers tempo.
One of the greatest things I love about all these older songs is that there is no tracking to a click! But...that said, it also means that I have to follow that drummers tempo, which will slightly go up and down at times.
I track these songs generally 3 times through and choose the best out of the three. I find that if I start going 5, 6, 7 takes and beyond, the track loses it's feel.
With all these songs, I'd rather keep a take that feels like it's going to fall off the track for a second but overall, has a great feel, then a track that's played perfectly but has less or no feel.
Until the next one.....Keep it HEAVY!!

I watched Jon fill in for Slayer and Anthrax at the same festival in Sydney a while back and I was blown away buy his drumming and his stamina. He is a great drummer and deserves more credit for his drumming. 😎
Only drummer that could pull that off, other than Dave himself.
Right on! It's so cool to see that he's pushing 50+ y.o. and still taking care of himself and drumming better than ever! Talk about professionalism!
Absolutely excellent!
Mikkey Dee is such a unique and fantastic drummer. I love his drumming in King Diamond.
Yes, please more Mikkey Dee!
Welcome home! 🤘🏼👿
John can't help but comment on your fitness. Dude you are SHREDDED. Obviously working hard in the gym, and I bet it helps on the drums because you hit hard.
He’s a well known CrossFitter.
Olé!!
That was frigging wicked 😮 long live MÒTORHEAD 🤘
Huge powerful performance, Bravo John 🤟
Regards Jon. I hope you are well. I'm good friends with Mikkey Dee, he explained to me that when he plays the Sacrifice song he uses a splash cymbal that he has near the ride cymbals. And that's what also helps him to carry part of the rhythm of the sacrifice song. Excellent amazing work Job👍🤜🥁🤛👍👊👊👊👊♠️♠️♠️♠️
Excellent, no body seems to have mentioned this but its great to see a left handed drummer for a change.
🔥🔥
You're such a powerhouse and a cool, humble, amazing drummer. I'm starting crossfit right after this summer because of you, you're such an inspiration both for drumming and lifestyle. Kudos from Italy Jon 🤟🏻
Dear John it was not spot on. It was absolutely sublime! It was beyond nailing it! The way you play is so fluyd it hurts! Congrats! You're a monster drummer!
FLAWLESS!
Phenomenal playing on this Jon, absolutely Top Shelf. You nailed it, such an intense and physical song Mikkey is a beast. Well done and greetings from Ireland!!!!

Damn dude, another banger, great drumming. Thanks for keeping Motorhead alive. Glad I ran into your channel.

Outstanding
Killer performance! Motorhead for life
Bastards. Motorhead was my first concert for me 1980 NYC WHEN I WAS 13 Paid $5 for it.
Excellent!
Very energetic!
Mikkey Dee has got to be one of the most creative yet underrated metal drummers ever! The man has such a recognizable style and touch ever since King Diamond days and KD never had a drummer as good again!
Very very good!!
Bravissimo!!!!!
Wow
Paulada rock roll sempre estamos juntos um grande abraço 🇧🇷🤘🍺
Wow, I never heard this Motörhead classic before. Don’t know if I’m more blown away by how intricate Mickey Dee’s drum and double bass patterns are. Or by how energetic and phenomenal Jon’s performance is. Either way I’m glad I tuned into this. 🔥🤘🏾
Fantastic Cover, ultraprecise. I watched the stagefright DVD many times and in my opinion the best solo i have ever seen beside Cozys.
I fucking love this song!!!!
This is amazing. Perfect drum tones.
Awesome🤘💥💥
Great cover! Mikkey is definitely one of my favorite drummers, especially his work with King Diamond.
Great cover. And great shape!

Mikkey Dee is one of the best.
You should record King Diamond's "Welcome Home" or "A Mansion In Darkness"!
That is a perfect tom sound!

fuuuuu , my favorite M. song!
My man is working out like a boss
Absolutely killer! Song sounds better with paiste cymbals-😁
Cover some testament stuff like Apocalyptic City. You killed it on the live at the Fillmore album
Great job! I always believed Lemmy, when he called Mikkey Dee the "best drummer in the world", but you nailed it. Add that's said by a guitar player who can't even count that rhythm correctly. ;)
Dam bro you on the trt train? Great job great song

It's always fascinating to see guys in their 50ies get more muscular than they were ever before. What's your secret? All natural, eh?!
*Promosm*
Nice ...butt you not take Mickey Dee.......i love you drums ....i am playing my self......😎😎😎😎😎❤️❤️
No toms are used in the song. Remarkable.
Very close to the original Mickey Dee's powerhouse drum style.
Basic drum pattern is really hard to play clearly and balanced. It just sounds simple but it ain't actually simple to play. Believe me, I've tryed.
good try, but I think souds stiff, needs work, its a hard song to play , respect for MD!
Yes, remember to close-mic the hell out of your drums. Get those bass drum mics deep inside the bass drum. It is very important for us to know what each part of the drums sound like from a distance of a few inches! Because that is how we listen to drums, we stick our ear up against the snare drum for example.
Thank you very much for this close-mic’ed and crushed flat drum sound. Remember: if something has been done the same way for several decades, it means it has absolutely been done the right way.
We must ensure there is no sense of air and space around the kit.
Exodus>anthrax
Gosh bro just play drums 🤣
This is definitely the most killer track I've seen here .. this song / drumming rips my face off! Always awesome, but this one gets in there deep! \○○/
Why not battalions of metal church it could be' a hommage to this underrated but great band ,in case of...a big thank from italy
