Philthy Animal was a pioneer. Truly one of the greats. He's a great example of meshing insanely fast beats while still maintaining such a GROOVE. He wasn't just spamming double pedals for the sake of it. He made you want to groove with the music! RIP!
His double bass drums were not only pioneering for their time, they are still potent. This fucking double bass has more punch than all the clicky death metal 300bpm bullshit because it was used tastefully and with style. He was a drumming god :(

Mickey D is a technical robot (an elite drummer according to so called expert musicians these days )where as Philthy had the groove n soul called sloppy by these experts
I worship Mikkey D's work with King Diamond, his drum tracks were a work of madman. But, in Motorhead, he played just a bit too tight. I mean, I love some of the Motorhead albums he played on, but Motorhead truely lost something after Philty left.
No no no , philty was an excellent drummer , but dont talk stupid things , mikkey dee its a monster , but we all love taylor because he was the first one .
@@bolid991 i think motorhead lost so much when fast eddie clark left , then mikkey dee came and it was then at the correct time , great even lemmy , always said he was the best and dont compare king diamond music and style , to motorhead was a different band , or what you expect that mikkey dee played the intros of king diamond on motorhead songs? @@Tigerloco70 Well thanks for suggesting that we are all stupid, fortunately I'm not so rude. But I agree with everyone else: Mickey D is an awesome drummer but he's an emotionless robot. Every single track played by both of them is better with Phil, has more energy and more feeling. Mickey is like a drum machine, and I don't like that kind of precision drumming _especially_ during a gig, where its all about the emotions blasting from the stage.
Dutchmetal666 so true . What a great way to describe his style of playing .love me like a reptile is my favorite Motörhead song . He added that special something to that song .
Great call on Rudd, Rarebell and Burr! All three are amazing pocket drummers who grooved and were tight as hell. I'd also add Les Binks' work with Judas Priest to that list.
This guy had inherent talent, he had an internal pulse that most drummers or musicians dream about. I don't know why he didn't keep on with them other than he was a lunatic. RIP brother, underrated as hell.
Under rated? REALLY? Reverted in the metal community as an outstanding drummer. World tours with a world famous band. Influential to fans and fellow musicians alike. How is that underrated? FFS
Ace of Spades, Bomber and Overkill were 3 of the best albums ever in this genre. I can't help feeling those of us who were there at the time assumed Lem, Phil and Eddie would be around forever... You learn the hard way. RIP guys.
@@tombstoneharrystudios584I didn't know he was unwell at the time, you sure couldn't have told from his playing in this Classic Albums episode. I'm not sure if you've seen the recordings for this episode where Phil, Lemmy and Eddie play Chase is Better than the Catch and We are the Road Crew together, but Phil is an absolute monster in those. It's such a shame he didn't do much of note after leaving Motorhead in the 90's, such a great talent who had so much more to give at the top level

God bless you Phil....Kick started a whole genre when he perfected double bass kick drumming. The whole thrash metal scene is forever indebted to you...
Fucking brilliant. I'm an acid/techno guy, but have always bowed down to the altar of Motorhead , Hawkwind (all various manifestantions), AC/DC - powerful music.
One of my favorite drummers. Heaven has rhe full line up of motorhead up there and when i die thatz all i want to hear! This man hear was one of the inspirations for me to pick up the drums
there are some drummers that have an immediately recognisable sound and phil is one of them. he puts so much swing into his drumming that it is hard not to tap your feet along to even teh most rockin' motorhead tune. phil is my inspiration for taking up drums, and will always be in my top five drummers of all time. love ya phil!
When I heard Motörhead for the first time I heard Overkill and the drumming of Phil made me say "What the fuck? Who is this drummer?" And that was a big influence for me to start playing drums and I have played now for about 8 years!
R.I.P phil the animal taylor. very sad of hearing you are no longer with us. god bless you mate .give my regards to wurzle and all the other great musicians.
Saw him in 1978. On the Overkill tour. Using the double bass foot . Drum. On OVERKILL. Which all these drummers. Now. Wouldn't have known If Phil , hadn't done it first.
Really love this video!! Philty really has that loose groove what gives it that Motor feel. Mikkey Dee is a good drummer to and the songs they wrote with him are good but when they played one of the "Philty era" you can hear he is to straight forward and that he cant groove like this boss! Philty will always be my favorite!
you are right.i take Phil over Dee anytime....i dislike Dee as a person too because in his early motorhead days he gave an interview and he said that Taylor was not a good drummer and he is better and shit like that....Dee might be more technical than Phil but Motorhead was never about technical stuff....he was great with Diamond and that Dokken, which i dislike both, and he should have stayed there.Phil was the best Motorhead drummer....period
First time I saw them on tv, around 1980, the announcer didn't know that it was Philthy Animal, and called him Philthy Phil. Whatever, they were hilarious in the interview, I laughed my balls off. It showed their personalities were as strong as their music, and man is that saying something.
I feel like phil taylor is supremely underrated. To call him an amazing drummer would be an understatement. Every thrash band that came after motorhead should know how important phil taylor and motorhead as a whole was as they were the precursors, the original thrash metal band.
I met Phil one time. A friend of mine was at Phils apartment in LA. They were having trouble getting a keyboard to midi with Protools. Chris Holmes called me and I went over. I fixed the problem and Phil gave me $100 and the shittiest glass of LA tap water with "floaty's" in it and it was the worst LA tap water I ever tasted. Epic.
Great clip, it's amazing to watch Phil at work like this. I loved the Punk Rock vibe he bought to the classic lineup. They were Cowboys, they were Vikings but mostly they were trailblazers, coming up with a unique blend of Thrash and Punk that made the whole world sit up and listen.
This guy is the real secret ingredient that made Motorhead so good musically. As others have commented, he's brutal and fast but always with a groove, never just smashing for no reason or for speed alone.
Oh , nice video //// I guess he might have been cold in the beginning ....but the cut , or view of the double bass drum was wonderful !! I am having a motoerhead "revival" (as Eddy died) ! RIP
All heavy metal drummers should pay tribute to this guy
many metal drummers do ^^
Indeed
feelthesteelofmetal, it's one of Lars' few redeeming qualities that he pays due respect to Philthy.
Me you and the Animal do you actually think Large Oilrig is a nice person?
Underrated like many other drummers of metal bands

Phil is my favorite drummer he's Insanely fast
Every thrash metal drummer owes him a huge debt.
Theuniverse Isaniceplace
He passed away in November 2015 sadly. All 3 members of the classic line-up of the band now gone.
That was literally true. He loaned money to so many drummers back in the day, and they basically just waited for him to die. It was a sound policy.
I play thrashy stuff and even phil had a certain feel , i never been influenced by him
To me with the riff style , Judas Priest have more to do with
I do indeed.
@@Nissardpertugiu Basically Motorhead is band who inspired thrash and speed metal.

Agree!
My thoughts exactly... Nowadays everyone wants to go like a fucking AK-47.
Totally agree...style is irreplaceable with only technique. Nothing like this today.
Both are equally valid styles of drumming that should be celebrated.
True triggers sound like shit
All of Philthy's tracks on all Motorhead albums were done live. No overdubs,..
no fake editing. Philthy had class.
