The NBA is officiated different now compared to when Magic played. So comparing players of different times is hard. There was no restricted zone under the rim when Magic played. Hand checking was allowed and you could restrict the man cutting across the lane without the ball. There also were no flagrant fouls, so fouls to stop a layup could be pretty physical. Also, the step back we see now would have been a travel, and people today get away with palming or a carry that would have been a violation in the past.

If Jordan had and was able to perform consistently across the same length of career then I also sure he would be undisputed. However, he acted on his ego and retired twice thereby leaving doubt. As a Steph fan, I really appreciated MJ’s approach. Made his case for Magic without dogging out Steph-paid respect to both guys while making his point clear. Magic has always publicly called MJ the greatest of all time. I'm glad MJ can reciprocate and at least call Magic man the greatest PG of all time. True competitors who can be honest and recognize each other's place.
So much of what Johnson does is trackable by stats. His rebounding, his passing (assists), his scoring. He was incredible, and the stats back that up. So much of what Curry does is not trackable by stats, though. As Stephen A. said, just his presence on the floor is enough to create more space for his teammates to do better. He's a black hole. We've never seen a player defended like how most teams defend Curry, and that more than anything else has led to Golden State's success. I'm not ready to definitively choose between them. Just saying that Curry's impact is insanely underrated.

Stephen A's explanation makes a lot of sense to be honest. Michael said it himself - you have to first define what a point guard is, or what exactly we're talking about in order to have a serious debate. Magic Johnson is the very definition of a point guard, if we're leaning on the historical definition. But Steph is something new, something else entirely, so there's no way to really compare the two according to the historical definition of a point guard. The only way to make a comparison would be to look at their overall impact on their teams' offenses and winning overall, and if you are doing that then Steph Curry vs Magic Johnson is an actual debate and could go either way depending on what a person values more.

The funny thing is that Draymond is the one that moves the ball around the most on the team and mostly does the facilitating for the past few years as a Power Forward surprisingly. There is more than one way to play a position and impact wise, Steph Curry beats Magic Johnson. He also has a better peak and is the better defender(quiet as kept). Steph has also had less help compared to Magic. Magic has just been seen as the best PG of all time that now that there is a threat, people don't want to believe it, so they have to make up a definition of what a point guard is which just so fits Magic Johnson.
Draymond doesn’t do that anymore. He doesn’t seem to have energy to do anything but defend now. Poole was the one with more PG responsibilities. Now it’ll be CP3. Steph only plays true PG for half the game.
Draymond receives the ball at the top of the key after setting a screen and rolling to the basket and gives the extra pass from there. This is not a point guards role, as much as people want to say it is. He is not the one moving the ball the most. He is just the man that ends up with it after the screen in a 2 on 1 situation
Grew up in L.A. during the 80's watching Magic, I agree with him as #1 PG. Steph has averaged 25-32 pts a game the past 7 years. Like MJ said, from a definition standpoint, I categorized Steph functionally as a scorer-shooter, not a true playmaking PG. A close second to Magic in my opinion only, is John Stockton. His assist-steals records, both hallmarks of a true point guard, will never remotely be broken. Lastly, you'll be farfetched to find a playmaking point guard like him who averaged anywhere near the 51% FG shooting % for his career.
I think the context of the question is "who is the best at fulfilling the traditional role of point guard?". That would of course be Magic. The only way Curry gets in this conversation is if we view as "who is the best player who filled in the point guard role" being that today's NBA is more positionless. Scoring would take more of a factor here in my opinion.

Because of how dangerous he is running off and shooting off screens he creates so many open lay ups shots for his teammates even if he is not the individual passing the ball to the teammates. When kd was in golden state steph could’ve milked the ball in pick and roll and racked up assist after assist in a Mike Dantoni type offense. But no like a true point guard steph plays the game a way that benefits his teammates and winning first.
In the pick and roll steph is too dangerous, he’s instantly doubled for the past 10 years. Setting up 4-3 situations, setting up easy hockey assist for teammates.
I done watch guys like harden in his prime get doubled at half court, and throw weak passes because he doesn’t care if he’s not getting the assist. Steph puts it on the money everytime in that situation over 7 footers or who ever with the hook pass left or right creating the 4-3.
His game is all about pressuring the Defense, to make the game EASIEST for his teammates, Which is the primary job of a PG. Steph is a different type point guard but he is still a point guard at heart, maxed out in all the point fundamentals.

The NBA is officiated different now compared to when Magic played. So comparing players of different times is hard. There was no restricted zone under the rim when Magic played. Hand checking was allowed and you could restrict the man cutting across the lane without the ball. There also were no flagrant fouls, so fouls to stop a layup could be pretty physical. Also, the step back we see now would have been a travel, and people today get away with palming or a carry that would have been a violation in the past.

So much of what Johnson does is trackable by stats. His rebounding, his passing (assists), his scoring. He was incredible, and the stats back that up.
So much of what Curry does is not trackable by stats, though. As Stephen A. said, just his presence on the floor is enough to create more space for his teammates to do better. He's a black hole. We've never seen a player defended like how most teams defend Curry, and that more than anything else has led to Golden State's success.
I'm not ready to definitively choose between them. Just saying that Curry's impact is insanely underrated.

In the modern NBA, Curry's skillset translates into winning more than Magic's skillset would. It's telling that Curry found all his success in the Lebron era, while Magic essentially couldn't win again once MJ got a bit of help.
Either way, this debate isn't easy. Anybody saying that one is head and shoulders above the other is wrong. It's very close. Even MJ, who chose Magic, said Steph is close.

Stephen A's explanation makes a lot of sense to be honest. Michael said it himself - you have to first define what a point guard is, or what exactly we're talking about in order to have a serious debate. Magic Johnson is the very definition of a point guard, if we're leaning on the historical definition. But Steph is something new, something else entirely, so there's no way to really compare the two according to the historical definition of a point guard. The only way to make a comparison would be to look at their overall impact on their teams' offenses and winning overall, and if you are doing that then Steph Curry vs Magic Johnson is an actual debate and could go either way depending on what a person values more.

The funny thing is that Draymond is the one that moves the ball around the most on the team and mostly does the facilitating for the past few years as a Power Forward surprisingly. No, he is a point guard. Draymond makes reads of Curry breaking the defense down either on or off the ball. When guys like Nate Archibald or Oscar Robertson or even a Jerry West played like Curry, they were listed at Point, especially the first two. There is more than one way to play a position and impact wise, Steph Curry beats Magic Johnson. He also has a better peak and is the better defender(quiet as kept). Steph has also had less help compared to Magic.
Magic has just been seen as the best PG of all time that now that there is a threat, people don't want to believe it, so they have to make up a definition of what a point guard is which just so fits Magic Johnson.
Draymond doesn’t do that anymore. He doesn’t seem to have energy to do anything but defend now. Poole was the one with more PG responsibilities. Now it’ll be CP3. Steph only plays true PG for half the game.
Draymond receives the ball at the top of the key after setting a screen and rolling to the basket and gives the extra pass from there. This is not a point guards role, as much as people want to say it is. He is not the one moving the ball the most. He is just the man that ends up with it after the screen in a 2 on 1 situation
Grew up in L.A. during the 80's watching Magic, I agree with him as #1 PG. Steph has averaged 25-32 pts a game the past 7 years. Like MJ said, from a definition standpoint, I categorized Steph functionally as a scorer-shooter, not a true playmaking PG.
A close second to Magic in my opinion only, is John Stockton. His assist-steals records, both hallmarks of a true point guard, will never remotely be broken. Lastly, you'll be farfetched to find a playmaking point guard like him who averaged anywhere near the 51% FG shooting % for his career.

I think the context of the question is "who is the best at fulfilling the traditional role of point guard?". That would of course be Magic. The only way Curry gets in this conversation is if we view as "who is the best player who filled in the point guard role" being that today's NBA is more positionless. Also remember as far as shooting, imagine reggie miller, john stockton, ray allen, steve kerr, steve nash, jeff horncaek, mark price, chris mullin, all played in this era and were taking the same amount of three pointers as steph curry and focussed their game on the three just as much. I think the curry conversations would be very different. The fact is they just never shot as many threes back then you really cant compare the eras as far as shooting is concerned

I understand your point but still I dont think they reach curry's 3 point numbers. Also Curry has amazing layup and dribble package, better than all those you listed which makes him a great PG. He showed with KD he doesnt need to be the main man to still impact the game.
