@AceofBadeReacts going back to show the things you talked about was great. This is my favorite SRV performance, but "Texas Flood" live at El Mocambo is an insane performance. If you've not seen it, your l8fe is lacking.
Charley Wirz was a friend of Stevie’s who had a custom guitar shop in Dallas and made the white guitar for Stevie. He died in ‘85, and Stevie wrote the song for him. He liked to use his “Charley” guitar to sing this Charley song, which is why he switched guitars. Stevie had a message he’d usually give many shows after about 1984-5, always different, always positive, as far as I remember.
It was a combination of two things. You can see him messing with the tuning and shake his head, then give his tech a nod to switch, and they take the opportunity to switch to the Charley guitar as mentioned. Normally, he wouldn't have switched mid song, but the red guitar couldn't be properly adjusted on the fly.
SRV the best in my opinion. Switched guitars, tuned guitar while playing. Broke a tooth while playing with his teeth. Did not miss a beat.He used 13 gauge strings to start and stayed 2 to 3 gauges bigger on the strings than the normal size strings. The GOAT. Thanks for the reaction
He usually played the white guitar, “Charlie” made for him by his friend Charlie., for this song. This song was written for Charlie who passed away unexpectedly. You can hear the guitar weeping. Also, you should know that Stevie was as humble as he was talented ❤
This was my 3 time seeing him, my best friend and i were 2 row center stage it was my 16th birthday.. He broke a string att the beginning of the song . Like another mentioned he wrote this for his good friend Charley and the guitar he switched to was given to him and named after that good friend... When he passed Stevie had " Thank You For All The Love You Passed Our Way " put on his headstone.. He lost a tooth playing this song. It was the last of the main, they came out and played 4 more for the encore. One of my greatest memories
behind the back: if u look closely, hes got the guitar strap thing all figured out, its very strategically done, but, also if u look closely, hes keeping it from touching his clothes & body by planting his pinky & ring finger , rigid & strong (those two fingers deserve a lot of credit) , on the body of the guitar to keep the guitar propped up & away from him...the dude also had ape-strength in his hands for real...as evidenced in the first behind the back part where he brings the guitar , upside down, out in front of him & is holding it by the neck, & fretting the note, & bending the note, & accurately hitting the note with his other hand all at the same time...that as well, is low key goat madness...he was just a beast....lots of cocaine & whiskey in these days, but his sober playing in his last 4 years was also amazing, obviously, when u have this much beast-mode skill.
👏🙌‼️Great reaction guys! You both need to experience his Tin Pan Alley along with Johnny Copeland performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Sweden 1985. Reese Wynans on piano joined the group in 1985 and was with them to the end.
Nice thorough covering of all essential parts of the performance. It was a long pause, but at least it was only once. Good job😊. The beautiful necklace Stevie wore was called a 'Squash Blossom', jade I believe. Stevie was wearing it at the time the helicopter crashed. From an interview of Chris and Tommy of Double Trouble they say that Stevie never really rehearsed for playing behind his back and didn't do it at a specific point in every show. They really didn't even have a set list for concerts. Stevie was very humble. One night the were playing at Red Rocks and when the arrived B.B. King was onstage. Stevie asked why and was told that B.B was opening. Stevie said No way B.B. King should be opening a show for him. Can't imagine what he'd be doing today. Great reaction. Check out the interview (1999 at El Macombo) with Chris and Tommy. Well worth it.

Stevie played using very thick strings. That’s why his guitar has such a unique sound. That being said, his use of extreme vibrato would often cause strings to break. But he wouldn’t quit. He would just change out his guitar in the middle of the song and then move right on.

the "thumb thing" is a jimi hendrix technique...instead of doing a common bar chord, barring it with ur index finger & fretting the rest of the chord with the other 4 fingers (minus the thumb), hendrix wrapped his thumb around to fret the top string...this freed up his other fingers to play scales around the chord his other four fingers were fretting on the beat, but then they were free to do solo/lead stuff in between the beat....hendrix was one of the first, in rock anyway (the country & jazz guys were also nuts) to play chords (rythm guitar) & lead guitar at the same time....SRV was a blues genius, as has prob been said, show her "texas flood" live at el mocambo, 1983...i love SRV so much, one of a kind texas kook....0% talent, 1,000,000% genius, the guitar played him, he was just "an open channel" as eric clapton once said
