I had to rewind because it was there 3 more times at the Rose Bowl. It happens! I do believe the last time it hosted the Super Bowl was a last-minute replacement. Tempe, Arizona was supposed to host the big game, but because the state not honoring MLK Day as a holiday, the NFL moved it to Pasadena.

The biggest disaster occurred at my house. I was a kid flipping through stations to find something to watch, and suddenly discovered the Steelers were two minutes from winning the game. My family had forgotten the Super Bowl was on.
The Los Angeles Rams had a rookie Center on this team who was on injured reserve this season from the University of Colorado. His name is Leon White. He is more well known as Big Van Vader of Professional Wrestling fame.
I think he was in his second year and actually did play in the game. He was rookie in 1978 and the Rams went to the Super Bowl for the 1979 season. Shockingly, Wikipedia has it wrong.

Yep, that sounds like Summeralll & Brookshire; Don Meredith & Howard Cosell were also known to tip a few for Monday Night (talk about rowdy, and erudite, friends!).
And that’s before addressing that the announcers for this game - Pat Summerall & Tom Brookshire - were out late the night before the game and CBS was not happy with their performance calling this game which prompted them to split them up after the 1980 season & begin a search for a new lead broadcasting team Somewhere in an alternate yet somewhat similar universe CBS’ lead team was John Madden & Vin Scully
Brookshier, a few years later, would remark after plugging an upcoming Lousiville basketball game on CBS, that "they have a collective IQ of about 40, but they can play basketball." That earned him a suspension for the final week of the season and while he called games through 1987, he quickly began sliding down the depth chart.
The late, great John Facenda quoted the '79 Steelers this way in their team highlight film: "There are 27 teams in pro football..... and then, there are the Pittsburgh Steelers."
I attended a regular season UCLA-Stanford game at the Rose Bowl in 1984 and it was the worst parking situation I’d ever encountered. The grassy field parking areas had no lights. Finding my car took forever.
I find it hilarious how the Rams had legit great teams in the 70's, in some years probably the best team in their conference yet can never beat the Cowboys or Vikings, yet this 9-7 Rams team is who managed to make the SB.

I still can't believe my Bucs didn't make it there. Of all the Rams teams of the '70s, how did this one make it to the Super Bowl? The NFL can be so strange.
The biggest disaster was made by Rams CB Eddie Brown, who ignored a double-team on John Stallworth, that resulted in a 73-yard touchdown that gave the Steelers the lead.
JG9, look into the disaster at Super Bowl XVI with regards to traffic keeping the 49ers from arriving on time, and the countless number of stolen wallets inside the stadium.
This is the first Super Bowl I can remember watching and actually recalling any details from. It was also the best Super Bowl I ever saw until the one where Elway got his first by beating the Packers, 20 years later. I had never heard it was such a disaster off the field.

That Ram team was riddled with injuries all season long, and got healthy by playoff time. That same Ram team defeated the Steelers in the regular season in 1978. They matched up well, especially defensively.
There’s a good reason for that. The Rams’ defensive coordinator was Bud Carson, who from 1973-1977 was the defensive coordinator for the Steelers…so he developed pretty much one of the best defenses of all time, the Steel Curtain. Terry Bradshaw noted that the Super Bowl against the Rams was such tough sledding because Carson knew all their plays and signals. Incidentally the play that finally put a dagger in the Rams’ fans hearts…60 Prevent Slot Hook and Go…had been installed during practice week precisely to counter Carson knowing their plays. Only problem is every time they tried it in practice, it failed because the safety in defense that was back to help kept coming over and broke it up. But it worked in the game for what was ultimately the winning touchdown pass…because the help in safety blew his coverage and DIDN’T come over. So TD (even though Bradshaw was off with the throw and Stallworth had to catch it over his wrong shoulder). They did use it a second time and this time the safety did come over…but it was a better throw and Bradshaw still got it in there…this time the safety prevented a TD.
Your point is well taken. I believe Bradshaw even stated that Jack Reynolds seemed to have an answer for everything the Steelers tried. My point is that the video made the Rams out to be a talentless fluke. That Ram team knocked the defending NFC champion Cowboys out of the playoffs, and had the defending Superbowl champs on the ropes for 3 qtrs.
@@jimdog6014 Agreed there was some real talent on that team…and until he got intercepted by Lambert late, Vince Ferragamo played a nearly flawless game.
@@jonemeigh5588 let's not forget Nolan Cromwell dropped a sure interception with nothing but the end zone in front of him. That would have put the Rams up 26-17.
Biggest omission: it was the Rams’ final season in LA before leaving for Anaheim, thus driving some of the hometown resentment the team experienced that year. The domino, in fact, that set Al Davis vs NFL in motion.
As far as Super Bowl "regions" go, you have to mention the Detroit Super Bowl between the Steelers and the Seahawks. While Detroit is eight hours away from Pittsburgh, so it can't be considered "near", so MANY Steelers fans packed the stands that NO other Super Bowl, not even last year's or the ones you mentioned which played within a team's region, ever had such a "home" field advantage for one team.
@Chris Smith Even in that case, there were fewer 49ers fans in the stands than Steelers fans in Detroit. Another honorable mention is the Rams-Patriots Super Bowl a few years ago. Patriots fans weren't as loud as Steelers fans, but they were the ONLY fans you heard. I don't think I heard ANY cheering for the Rams and I only saw one or two people in the stands wearing Rams paraphrenalia. I'm sure it would have been a much different case if it were the ST. LOUIS Rams playing against the Patriots.
I drove to that Super Bowl from Pittsburgh. Could only afford it because I just needed SB tickets and hotel. Didn’t also have to pay for plane tickets. There were so many Steelers fans walking around downtown Detroit on Saturday, and during the game the “Here we go Steelers” chant started up every couple of minutes. It the Fadt Willie Parker TD still the longest rushing touchdown in the Super Bowl?
You act like the 1979 los ángeles rams got to the supet bowl by buying and winning some sort of super bowl lottery ticket? It's not unheard of for teams to have a average regular season then excel in the playoffs, the 67 packers and the 80 Raiders come to mind. Of course the opposite is way more common. In 1979( a overall weak NFC season) the rams beat a highly talented dallas cowboys 11-5 ( I was 12 years old and remember the exciting game, I think you can watch it on UA-cam) and a cinderella tampa bay buccaneers 10-6 and gave the favored pittsburgh steelers a run for their money for most of the game.
6:40 ok i can be quiet about walking from FedExField to Morgan Blvd. Metro Subway Station. Thats a mile or so, but 14 miles of walking to the Rose Bowl?
The RAMS were decimated by injuries over the course of the 1979 season and their roster was still depleted when they played Super Bowl XIV. If you want to talk about the "worst" team to ever make it to a Super Bowl, I'd suggest any of Bud Grant's clown shows. Their 'performances' in the games bears out my assertion.
And 1987 when LT & the Giants knocked around Elway plus 1993 when Dallas destroyed Buffalo 52-17! So in a span of 16 years the Rose Bowl hosted 5 Super Bowls? Damn that’s crazy
Excellent video! I clearly remember the game but I didn’t know the backstory behind the logistics. It’s interesting that the game was played there in 1993, 1983, and 1987 as well
There is a difference between the game being a disaster and how the game was run being a disaster. You can do better. As for the parking, that's how politicians think. When there is a bad situation (for example, limited parking) their solution is to make it worse. I was living in Los Angeles then, and let me say that there were no stories that night about the parking. All the stories were about the game. Do you understand that anywhere from 1/4" to 1/2" of rain is NOTHING! The Game wasn't a disaster.
@@0320emo The Rams were never meant to be in St Louis. They're too small of a market and not considered a football city. That was all then-owner Georgia Fronitere's doing because it's where she was from.
Fun fact about this Super Bowl as well, this Super Bowl was illegally featured in the 1981 Italian Slasher film Absurd. They wanted to make the movie more accessible to an American audience, so they decided to make the movie take place the night of the Super Bowl. They even show footage from the game in the movie. At the Super Bowl party everyone is dressed up, the men in suits and the women in dresses. It's really funny to see.
I went to LA Galaxy games there during their first couple of years in existence and the parking was bad there even when they were only drawing 20,000 fans. The other big problem is that there is only one way to get in or out and that really creates a traffic nightmare. This is one of the reasons why they limit the amount of events that can be held there, especially concerts.
And the Super Bowl will never be played in the Rose Bowl again. I believe the Tournament of Roses and Pasadena officials won't let the NFL ever touch that stadium again.
It's a very old venue in any event. The NFL prefers newer venues for Super Bowls. There are a number of Super Bowl venues that have since been demolished, including one that opened in my lifetime, the Georgia Dome. The only reason the Rose Bowl is still standing is because of its sentimental value. The idea of building a new stadium in Pasadena is considered blasphemous.
Other than the Rose Bowl itself, UCLA's football team play their home games there these days. UCLA, however, want to build a stadium closer to the campus (although I cannot see that happening any time in the future).
The Rose Bowl parking situation was/is so bad that during both the 1994 World Cup & the 1999 Women's World Cup, the organizers & FIFA had to rent charter buses to transport fans to & from the Rose Bowl which was free of charge for fans with a ticket.
A little off topic maybe, but also kinda cool, but there's a low budget, but pretty good 1981 horror movie that uses this Super Bowl as the back drop for its climax. Movie is called "Absurd" if anyone is interested.

Pasadena didn't win a bid for SB XXVII, but got it by default. Tempe as supposed to host it in Jan 1993, but the NFL pulled it due to AZ Gov Evan Mecham cancelling Martin Luther King Day as a state holiday. There were national and entertainment boycott's of Arizona and the NFL and it's owners finally decided to take the Super Bowl away from them. I don't know why they chose Pasadena besides already having hosted before. It may just be the closest NFL ready stadium at 6 hours away. But they could have just as easily held it in San Diego again. Arizona would officially make MLK a holiday, the last state to do so. The governor would be impeached for other things. And Tempe would get SB XXX in 1996.
@Fries Yes, Super Bowl XXVII was the last to be played in a non-NFL stadium. As to San Diego-Jack Murphy Stadium not hosting the game, this was before they fully enclosed the stadium (funnily enough, more people attended the pre-expansion Super Bowl {XXII} than either of the post-expansion Super Bowls).
Coincidentally Super Bowls XXVII & XXX featured the Dallas Cowboys All 3 Cowboys 90s wins were on NBC because the pattern got messed up due to the changing TV deals & the 1992 Winter Games Starting w/II: Even numbered games were on CBS, Odd numbered games on NBC Then ABC joined the mix starting with Super Bowl XIX, followed by NBC XX, CBS XXI Divisible by 3 = CBS Then after that ABC, NBC Until 1991 when CBS wanted XXVI as their lead in to the Winter Games… and the halftime show was a disaster NBC got XXVII & then XXVIII via a special bid ABC XXIX, NBC XXX, Fox XXXI, NBC XXXII The pattern was somewhat restored when Fox aired XXXIII Fox: divisible by 3 Then ABC, CBS When NBC took over SNF, they replaced ABC in the rotation Fox: Divisible by 3 Then NBC, CBS And then CBS & NBC swapped spots because NBC wanted the Super Bowl as their lead in to the 2022 Winter Games much like how Super Bowl LII was 4 years earlier And now ABC-ESPN is part of the rotation in the new TV contract Fox gets Super Bowl LVII, then games in the affiliated season divisible by 4. Whenever there is a big event at the Rose Bowl (>20K); parking will be a hassle. The stadium, though in a beautiful location, is also a victim of where it is. Said location, at the bottom of the Arroyo Seco, is surrounded by one of the ritziest neighborhoods in Pasadena that is also hilly. The closest mass transit stop today (which did not exist in 1980) is miles away on Old Town Pasadena, and requires an uphill walk. An unavoidable part of the stadium's problem is when it was built, 1923, and the utterly different planning considerations that were in effect at that time (also, the stadium was built above a landfill). If any game, concert, or other event is put on sale for the Rose Bowl, any true Angeleno carefully weighs whether or not they really need or want to go to said event to this day.
In that same vein, in, Washington, D.C., there's, also, a, Metro, stop, for, the, Zoo, but, you have to walk, over, a mile, uphill, the stop, right, after, is, both, closer, and, downhill, but, as it's in, Maryland, they don't label it, as, such-bewilderingly.

The 1979 Rams were beset by injuries, and that's the primary reason they had what was for them a subpar season. But the Rams were the dominant team in the NFC West throughout the 1970s. They just weren't able to get over the hump in the playoffs prior to 1979. Also, The Rams were one of the few teams that gave the Steelers trouble in the '70s. The moral of the story is: Don't tell people you have tickets for the Super Bowl.
The Los Angeles Rams had a rookie Center on this team who was on injured reserve this season from the University of Colorado. His name is Leon White. He is more well known as Big Van Vader of Professional Wrestling fame.
Oh wow didn’t know he played professional football “It’s Vader time”
I think he was in his second year and actually did play in the game. He was rookie in 1978 and the Rams went to the Super Bowl for the 1979 season. Shockingly, Wikipedia has it wrong.
Yup... 2nd year... my bad... miscounted years.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention that CBS’s broadcasters, Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshire, were drunk and hungover 😵.
Yep, that sounds like Summeralll & Brookshire; Don Meredith & Howard Cosell were also known to tip a few for Monday Night (talk about rowdy, and erudite, friends!).
And that’s before addressing that the announcers for this game - Pat Summerall & Tom Brookshire - were out late the night before the game and CBS was not happy with their performance calling this game which prompted them to split them up after the 1980 season & begin a search for a new lead broadcasting team
Somewhere in an alternate yet somewhat similar universe CBS’ lead team was John Madden & Vin Scully
I’m a Louisville fan and that idiotic remark by Brookshire still burns.
1980 was the final season of Summerall and Brookshier. I’m sorry. You are correct.

i don't think i've ever heard such a paltry intro for a SB team that you gave the Rams.

Detroit is a six hour drive and less than a one hour flight.

Fun fact about this Super Bowl as well, this Super Bowl was illegally featured in the 1981 Italian Slasher film Absurd. At the Super Bowl party everyone is dressed up, the men in suits and the women in dresses. It's really funny to see.
@Fries probably means it was done without the NFL's consent
I was 14, going for the Rams even after they beat my Buc's in the NFC Championship game. Rams would move to Anaheim for the next season.
Were there any stories about parking issues at the remaining THREE Super Bowls held at the Rose Bowl?
Or how about EVERY Rose Bowl game?

Coincidentally Super Bowls XXVII & XXX featured the Dallas Cowboys
All 3 Cowboys 90s wins were on NBC because the pattern got messed up due to the changing TV deals & the 1992 Winter Games
Starting w/II: Even numbered games were on CBS, Odd numbered games on NBC
Then ABC joined the mix starting with Super Bowl XIX, followed by NBC XX, CBS XXI
Divisible by 3 = CBS
Then after that ABC, NBC
Until 1991 when CBS wanted XXVI as their lead in to the Winter Games… and the halftime show was a disaster
NBC got XXVII & then XXVIII via a special bid
ABC XXIX, NBC XXX, Fox XXXI, NBC XXXII
The pattern was somewhat restored when Fox aired XXXIII
Fox: divisible by 3
Then ABC, CBS
When NBC took over SNF, they replaced ABC in the rotation
Fox: Divisible by 3
Then NBC, CBS
And then CBS & NBC swapped spots because NBC wanted the Super Bowl as their lead in to the 2022 Winter Games much like how Super Bowl LII was 4 years earlier
And now ABC-ESPN is part of the rotation in the new TV contract
Fox gets Super Bowl LVII, then games in the affiliated season divisible by 4. Example: 2024 season, divisible by 4, that season’s Super Bowl (LIX) will be on Fox
NBC gets games divisible by 4 as part of Winter Games lead-in. Super Bowls LX, LXIV, LXXII…
CBS gets games divisible by 2 but not 4 (LVIII, LXII, LXVI)
Other games: ABC-ESPN (LXI, LXV, maybe LXIX if the pattern holds which would be nice)

Too, bad, he, later, talked the Steelers into passing on Dan Marino, they thought he still had a, long, career ahead of him, we all know, how, that story, ended.
don't they have public transit?
jackie slater played in xiv in '79 as la ram and was on rams when they moved to st.l in '95. Ike bruce was the last active la ram in st. l.

Except nobody can afford tickets for the superbowl
Wasn’t always the case. Back then, right around kickoff, scalpers were selling tickets outside the stadium for $20
Back then Super Bowl tickets were very affordable which is why real fans attended the games. Wasn't until the 80's when the Super Bowl became more corporate and tickets, at least to the actual fans, became rare to get. When I was in high school, my bus driver used to tell us he went to many Super Bowls including Super Bowl III. The first Super Bowl tickets topped out at $12.
It seems to me that they would be better at hosting large games. They host the Rose Bowl every year.
Hey Jaguar . . . Do you think the Chiefs made a dumb decision with the final play of the first half during the AFC Title Game?
I believe he said on Twitch that he had no problem with calling a play given whom Andy Reid was trusting to make a play (a smart, MVP-caliber quarterback Patrick Mahomes), but the play itself didn't work.
Based on how I understand the Dumb Decisions series, that play doesn't qualify because of the elements that could have been in place to make the call work. It was a dumb decision, but not a Dumb Decision, as in one that looks bad from the outset.
Personally, I would have kicked the field goal there to extend the lead to 24-3, but the right play call could have made it 28-3. Whether that buries the Bengals or not is a whole different question.
@@msarzo true . . . but what about the time out that was used before the successful challenge?
Do a video on the Rainstorm that occurred during Super Bowl 41
In theory, people thought the Colts would have just been stymied, they, later, proved the weather to, not, affect them in the, least, period.
The last Super Bowl that Tom Brookshire would be involved with
SB XIV was also known for a very subpar performance by Pat and Tom. The next season would be their last together.
@@kyle1910 but that's because Brookie got fired for saying Louisville's basketball team had a combined IQ in the 40's. Not for nothing, Brookie was an extremely nice man. Down to earth. I spoke with him many times when he hosted the morning show on 610 WIP in Philadelphia, one of the first all sports radio stations.
@@Rockhound6165 not exactly. Brookie was suspended for the next game but stayed on for play-by-play for 3 more seasons, through 1986.
@@kyle1910you're right. I remembered it differently.

Just saying, “disaster” is a pretty significant word. You use it way too much.
How the blue hell did the Rose Bowl get to host THREE more Super Bowls after its 1st 2 were run so poorly? I've known about its access issues for a minute, but I didn't know the parking around the venue was so scarce, especially when it rains.
Because of its enormous capacity
@@TimmyTickle The number of parking spaces needed to reflect that, though. The large capacity can work against you if there's not enough parking near the venue.
If i think is going to win the Super Bowl then Super Bowl XVIII ,XIX,LV,and LVI will have a lot in common
I promise if you had to park in residential areas you were going to pay up the ass and this year's sb in Inglewood people in neighborhood surrounding the stadium will be charging up to $50 to park
Thank you, Jon Bon Jovi (Bed of Roses reference). I guess you're still affected by the "It's My Life" show.
I feel like a better line for this game mighta been bed of thorns honestly, but fair point.....
Rams had some cats: Jackie Slater and Dennis Harrah, up front! I saw Nolan Cromwell, one of the best safeties in the business. I saw "Hunter," Fred Dryer. The Youngbloods! Lawrence McCutcheon, at RB. This is a different game if starting QB Pat Hayden isn't hurt!
Steelers still win ,at that point they've defeated more decorated teams than rams led by more accomplished QB 's then Haden in previous sb wins . Not coincidentally Steelers successfully rallyed for victories in 3 SB victories,10,13:and cemented a victory with a 4th qtr td in sb 9 , meaning the Steelers win vs rams in sb 14 was inevitable, regardless of who was qb for the rams because Pittsburgh was accustomed to every sb circumstances and had proceeded to successfully navigating the SB game terrain turbulence ,leaving with Lombardi trophy's in all 3 former encounters . Pat Haden wasn't altering SB history .
@@HaroldMccoy-vv4lt Steelers were old. But, as the great John Facenda commented, "Great teams aren't always great. They're just great when they have to be!" Still think Haden makes it closer in the fourth quarter.
How do you know all this shit, dude? Do you go through every newspaper ever? Do you watch every game in NFL history?
In Superbowl 45 or 2012 the problem was not that the seats did not exist, they were going to put in more seating to the stadium but then some safety people blocked the ruling of having extra seating on the corners in spots where the view was not blocked due to fire safety when this was not the actual case but due to how the extra seating was made. The people in charge messed up and could not even call the right move for the temporary seating. The people in charge fixed this problem of the first type of seating to be a different style to get the view and failed to have it be safe yet could have been fixed in time just they refused to let people do so.
Love this channel bro. Just recently found it, GO STEELERS!
They kept Terry Bradshaw a year too, long, and, fell, short, for, two, decades, they, idiotically, kept Ben Roethlisberger a year too, long, too, stay tuned.
What about the Mylar?
The real disaster was how 9-7 rams leading at the half with franco and swann out still couldn't stop tb to stallworth as super steelers win their fourth s b. Rams dominated the nfc west in the '70's but didn't have the qb to put them over the top. Rams were always reaching at qb. hadl, jaws, harris, haden, ferragamo, even 4 games of washed up joe willie weren't gonna do it.
Not, as disastrous as the Steelers, were, going forward, they wouldn't even make the, Playoffs, again, until, 1982, only, because, of, "The, Strike," and, totally, wrecked their franchise by passing on Dan Marino in, 1983, they wouldn't find their answer at, QB, until, 2004.
@@matthewdaley746 yep. Didn't even win a home playoff game until '95. Everyone knew that was the super steelers last hurrah. Then noll fell in love with the big dt senor sack as the serviceable mark malone, tomzac, bubby brister, and others qb'd steelers until then.
@@stevenbauer4799 Possibly, but, Dan Marino still played in their own city, I blame, The, Rooney, Family, look at them from the time they owned the team until Chuck Noll arrived, later, look at the team from, 1980-2004, the numbers, are, unbelievable, for, what they're, not.
@@matthewdaley746 Could have been a rooney call. Who knows? noll had control over player moves and always believed in defense.
