Man once i knew it was a clock management situation. I knew that there was a high change that it would have been a dumb decisions situation as well. If I were one of the veteran players on that team I would have called time out as soon as I knew that there was no time going to be called.
I was at the game. Everybody in the entire stadium was thinking, "we're gonna lose, we're gonna lose...wait. What? It's over? We won? We won!!!" It was nuts. As a Lions fan, though, this still feels like a loss.
If you want to really see how much of scxmbag this guy is, take a look at a video of Dan Campbell literally crying real tears and saying he takes full responsibility and accountability for messing up when he messes up, then run it side by side with this guy’s answer…No accountability whatsoever. As a Lions fan, it felt weird. Most of us didn’t know wtf just happened. Sorry Bears fans, for real! Y’all deserve better than this.
What's spectacularly stupid here is that Eberflus has to be thinking "If Caleb gets sacked, we call timeout" before they even RUN the play on 2nd down! Coaching is about planning ahead. I don't give a tinker's cuss about Da Bearce, but even I'm embarrassed for them.
"WELCOME TO DUMB FREAKING DECISIONS!" To say I was looking forward to seeing this video would be a massive understatement. The fact that Matt Eberflus didn't call the last timeout with ONLY 30 seconds of the game to go as well as throw Caleb Williams under the bus by blaming him for how the play turned out despite the fact that HE COULD NOT HEAR THE CALL really shows on why I have no regrets to call Matt Eberflus the WORST Chicago Bears head coach of all-time, and I know there have been some bad ones like Marc Trestman and Abe Gibron, but if I'm being honest, those don't compare to the idiotic incompetence of a head coach that is Matt Eberflus! At 32 seconds left to go, this is like Matt Eberflus personally rolling the red-carpet out onto Soldier Field and introducing JG9 for a Master-Class in Dumb Decisions.
Also, earlier in the game, the Bears went for an extra point instead of 2 when down by 16. They could have made it a one-score game, but nope. Eberflus just does nothing right for the Bears.
The thing that made this SO COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE are the words of Eberflus and Caleb in the post game presser. HC first: “We were outside FG range” ~ no, you weren’t. It would have been a LONG FG attempt at 58 yards, but still possible. I know Santos doesn’t have a huge leg, but a 58 yard attempt would have been better than what we ended up with. Press asks what he would have done different: “I like what we did there (at the end of the game). I think we handled it the right way”. ~ well, you didn’t handle it the right way. You handled it the worst way possible. Thankfully, this guy was fired on Friday (after a press conference where he said he’d be getting ready for San Fran next week). Caleb Williams gets his own comment, as this is too long. However , he’s the rookie QB who played so well in the second half that he put them in position to maybe win this game, so I’m gonna cut him more slack.
You could make an hour long video of those stupid decisions. His history of calling for 2 point conversions when a 1 point kick would've put them in a position where they could win or tie but got Zero points instead. That missed 2 point conversion earlier in this game? If they'd have gone for the extra point, they could've easily taken a knee at the 25 to run the clock and kicked it for a win. They still would've needed a TD and field goal 2 point or 1 point. The decision to call a defense that led to open sidelines allowing for the commanders to get a pass to get into hail mary range as well as stop the clock.
I know it's just because I'm a Lions fan but my reaction was just inconsolable laughing. It still feels weird that my team wasn't the one that did this though.
The title is no exaggeration. Everybody at the house I was eating at was absolutely astonished. "...wait why aren't they calling time out" turned into people screaming, "CALL TIME OUT! CALL TIME OUT! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!? CALL TIME OUT!!!!!" I saw Andy Reid mismanage the clock in GOAT-tier ways but this is something nobody will ever top. OJG was the first person I thought of when I saw this play.
I really enjoyed the little bonus clip at the end. Watching the entire Chargers offense just kind of meander around like they had all the time in the world was driving me insane. That wasn't even clock mismanagement. They just looked like they didn't have a care in the world. How the hell did that work???
I thought I was imagining it. I'm still stunned. You have a timeout and a chance to tie USE IT! Most coaches use timeouts when there is slim hope. The Bears were well in it.
Not coincidence. I swap them out for every video I do based on the teams they're about. I've got about 1,000 helmets in my place for this. Lot of eBay shopping and saving
I disagree that you call that final timeout there. Third and 27, you have a play set up in advance and your players get set quick. Caleb said he made adjustments to the play at the line. That was unacceptable. But even after that, had he quickly thrown a slant or an out that picked up 7-12 yards, he still would have had time to call timeout.
Worst coach for game management? I see your Eberflus and raise you a McDermott. The 13 second game had 3 separate mistakes in those 13 seconds (not quib kicking, not tackling the receivers on the first play, and then playing to stop a TD instead of a FG, Kelce wasnt even covered), each one so egregiously bad they were firebale offenses. All 3 together are the greatest coaching fail of all time. Last year, McDermott blew 3 games on his own after Allen gave him the lead with under 2 min left. He blew the Kansas City as welll, but Toney being offsides bailed him out. This year McDermott has made game losing decisions in 2 seperate games but Allen played superhero and it didn't cost the team. This doesn't even count the games he was silly in that weren't close. If the Bills hadn't come out of the 17 year desert, McDermott would have been gone. But he gets enormous leaway for helping bring the team back from the dead. Worst lart is he males the right call most of the time, but he "reverts" to 1970s football guy when he gets "tight" as the tyler dunne article says, and suddenly forgets how to do modern game management.
I've seen teams rush their kicking unit out and get the FG kicked in seconds - that shows it's been thought of and practiced. If you call timeout even a few seconds after the sack you could set up a 10 yard play within 5-10 second anywhere on the field, preferably toward the sidelines, AND at the same time prep the kicking unit to get ready to go out for 20 seconds if you can't stop the clock
Listening to this video as I do chores, I look over at the screen briefly and just as I do, a Bleacher Report notification pops up saying he’s been fired lol
For the record, that Chargers-Chiefs situation happened because Fouts mistook the play clock for the game clock (though Coryell should still have called timeout from the sidelines).

Worst lart is he males the right call most of the time, but he "reverts" to 1970s football guy when he gets "tight" as the tyler dunne article says, and suddenly forgets how to do modern game management.
Eberflus got rewarded for his dumb freakin decision by getting a really LONG Christmas vacation. :p
I got my popcorn out for this video and it doesn't disappoint
I’ve been a Bears fan for over 30 years and I’ve seen some terrible decisions, but nothing even can come close to this
Spoke too soon, Flus is GONE
3:09-And then this happened😂
Sources says that he finally got fired!!!
As a lions fan this video is pure gold I subscribed
