You look great Lauren. Hope ur well. Wheres the superwoman shirt? The red one is good 2 . I got a similar guitar. Its a tanglewood. Fun to play on and has a good sound output. Kind regards from Leonard.
Travis Picking is more the fingers used rather than the picing pattern. The most common TP is using the thumb for all the bass notes and never the pinky (and maybe not the ring finger, as well).
Lauren rocks, she tougth me many things on guitar and i like to come back here. This one just fits perrfectly as something to be a challenge to amke another step forward. Keep goinf that way. Fingers crossed in a country on the other side of the globe!
Thank you! I’ve been wanting to learn hotel California but might be too difficult for me atm but this is another beautiful song I’ve always wanted to learn and you teach it beautifully:) teachers like you are gems in this world!
@@LaurenBateman I have been at this lol for a year or more. When one has played for years with a pick? It is like learning to walk all over again. Can get really frustrating because one forgets how much time it took to learn with a pick in the beginning. Like everything today "we want it NOW." lol I quickly learned The pattern used on dust in the wind is different than landslide. Also I think Paul Simon uses some different patterns too. All though as you say, coming from Merl Travis style.
I've watched other tutorials for this song but this one clicked for me. I've been playing for almost 30 years and can play a bunch of songs but invariably someone will ask, "Hey, can you play Dust In The Wind?", and I would just sigh. Lol. Now, I'm finally getting it! Thank you so much!
Great job Lauren, I just got a call to accompany a Flute, Violin & Cello trio on this, I'm mainly a jazz guy (flexible) and this set me straight, much appreciated.
Years ago someone showed me that pattern. You're right, it's very useful! I've since found other songs to use it in. For example, you can play Harry Nilsson's Coconut if you slow the pattern down and alternate the root (thumb) from C on the 5th string to G on the 6th string. I've also found country songs where I can slip into that pattern for a bit. It gives kind of a banjo roll sound. :)
Very Nice and informative. I wish you would increase the sound of the guitar a little bit more so i can follow the pattern better when you are doing it fast. Thank you for this piece.
Just goes to show that a what is thought to be a difficult guitar song can be a really easy song to learn to play. When all Kerry Livgren did was put together some practice finger picking cords. What was hard is now really simple to string together. And just practice. Can take everything from Bach/Mozart to metal to church hymns and play it.
I have a question Lauren, after the pluck, do you need to pick thumb 1 again on the A string? Or do you pick the B string after the (first pluck) cycle? Thanks
This is a random question. Is it bad habit if at times I wonder around the fret board and find unique sounds/shapes that actually rang out with clarity?
Hi Lauren, thanks so much for this lesson, I'm a newbie and this has been on my list to tackle! Hey, quick gear question: I'm looking to gift myself my first nice Taylor acoustic (currently playing a $600 Yamaha) and have been eyeing the 324 Builders that you're playing here, would you recommend it for an enthusiastic beginner? (I already scratched the Gibson itch with a new 60's Standard, probably the nicest guitar for the worst payer ratio in the Western US!)
Thanks for watching! Yes that will be a nice guitar to buy. I suggest you go to a guitar store and see if the Taylor fits you and you can play it comfortably.
@@LaurenBateman how do I make the sound because I tried it and it there was no sound is there any tip for me so I can make the sound. For the Am/G. Please and thank you.
Asus4 was hard for me at first, as it was an awkward reach. I found it was easier if I played an Am, then put my pinky on the B string at the 3rd fret. Somehow it was like an anchor to help me stretch the pinky. Eventually I could release the first finger from the B on the first fret, and ultimately not rely on the Am anchor. If that makes sense! Just offering a tip in case others find Asus4 clumsy at first. Meanwhile, I can’t get my pinky to reach G/Am. Oh well!
When people say this, I usually tell them they are not listening. You have to empty your cup to learn. Stop thinking you know everything already. If you listen, you will learn.
@@LaurenBatemanI don't think I know everything but your voice sounds like a diarrhoea to my French ears ,sorry. It's easier to listen when there is less talking.

As an alternative, I pinch the A and B strings together on the first beat of each bar. Gives it a tiny bit more depth. Great lesson, though!

I think this pattern does also fit for playing Freight Train (Joan Baez Version). Is that right?
Interesting. It's possible.
I have a question Lauren, after the pluck, do you need to pick thumb 1 again on the A string? Or do you pick the B string after the (first pluck) cycle?

When you put the capo on 3, which song was that? Apologies if someone asked already.
Many songs have a capo on the 3rd fret.
Good job Lauren! Wondering if you could do a tutorial on the song, never going back again, by Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac) Thanks!

Excellent lessons. However, the Pluck (P) is usually called a Pitch (2 strings simultaneously). Books and other tutorials refer to it as pitch.

Yep my teacher/friend wanted thumb F#. Efficiency I find alot of more Efficiency whIchnis less motio on fretting I will go for efficiency.
You are a good teacher.😂
no need to play top two base notes with thumb. just use 4 fingers (p-i-m-a) for the whole arpegio, it works just fine and easier.
👍
You are SO effective

Nothing is easy or simple on the guitar.
It's all work.
As I have told my Jiujitsu coach, just because it is simple doesn’t make it easy.
now "master" the solo too...
That’s a great one!!! I was thinking of doing a lesson on that.
