There are 4 sizes of Vermont castings stoves here. The 4 sizes are
1- Aspen which is the smallest wood stove in the lineup
2- Intrepid II which is still on the small side, I would say not much bigger then the aspen
3- The encore. this stove is the best seller, and is perfect for heating around 2,000 sq ft
4- The Defiant Which is the big dog! This is the Mac daddy of all wood stoves

Excellent job on your video, very informative! I was leaning toward the Intrepid, I called your shop today for a quote. But now that I see it, I think I'll look at the next size larger. Again, thanks for the video, great job!

I bought a Resolute stove (1988) thought the paperwork said 2008 lol, but I can tell you with only two weeks of using this stove, I love it. The burn time is amazing, I am burning hedge (osage orange) and can get 12 hours out of these logs. It heats up quick and even with the damper open the burn time is amazing very impressed so far.

I've had a Defiant / Encore (before they split the sizes up) since 1996 and love it!! The red enamel looks brand new as I baby it so it's guaranteed to last a lifetime.
Before that, I had an Intrepid (black) in another home, which got me hooked to Vermont Castings.

Can you tell me what size your Defiant Encore is? Closer to the current Encore or closer to the larger Defiant? Any details you can share, I’d appreciate because I’m considering buying a used one.

Hi Gina: A dealer once told me the size of my 1996 Defiant Encore is between the current Encore and Defiant models.
Before buying used, I would have it inspected by a qualified wood stove technician, preferably one familiar with Vermont Castings products. Also the catalytic converter is in good shape. Replacements run $300 -$400 installed. I am still using the original. Some people take great care of their stoves, others do not and run them way too hot. All I can tell you is mine has been basically problem free for the last 34 years. I only usually burn on the weekends for additional heat and ambiance. Good luck!

I watched you replace a door gasket. Could you show how to replace all the gaskets? I have an Encore and this will be our 12th year but last year was awful b/c the stove wouldn't seal well enough.

It is important to get the size of stove correct, too big and it turns your home into a Swedish sauna and too small for your needs and you’ll never get the cosy warmth and comfort. I’m looking in from England - I love the quality of American manufacturing, if only the Americans know the power of Made in the USA has in the world.

I've had the Vermont Castings Defiant model for 20 years. I'm looking to swap that out for a smaller unit. Is there a trade in or exchange being offered anywhere? It also seems difficult to get re-conditioning kits for them. I wanted to replace all of the gaskets and the glass front has thin ribbon-like gasket material that I can't find anywhere. Ideas on that? Thanks so much.

The wood stove would be the secondary heat source but probably used daily in central mn

you could go with the smallest, the Aspen, depends on what climate and how well insulated home is. For good measure you could do the Intrepid II as well.

I'm interested in these stoves for a loosely insulated old house, 800 square feet. Upper Peninsula, would it be best to fire a smaller stove harder such as the intrepid, or a larger stove slower. I have a lined brick two story chimney with enough draft to draw soot up. Thanks in advance.

  • @briansmith6306

Folks need to consider how cold it gets where they live and how reliant you will be for heat from your stove. I use wood (soap stone rated for 1,600 sq ft) yet my house is 1,100 sq ft. When it’s around 0 degrees out I’m lucky to get 7 hour burn time. However if it’s 20’s to upper 30’s I may get 9 hours (burning red and sugar maple, ash, and some white birch. Point is, get a stove larger than the sq ft of your home if you are relying on it as a primary heat source. Additionally you need to consider how well your home is insulated.
