Great video. Lots of information I was looking for. I just uncovered an older oak leaf hydrangea that is growing in an overgrown garden. It’s blooming and beautiful. I’m planning on pruning it a bit and would love to propagate it. New subscriber 😊
Great video, I´m such a newbie when it comes to cuttings. But it´s got me the idea of propagating my new hydrangea penniculata that I´ve just bought. Looking forward to your progress.
Thanks so much for answering my question about confederate jasmine! Now that most of my cuttings have failed, I’d love to take some more and try again. If I sterilize the trays I used, is it too late in the season to try? I’m in South Georgia (zone 8b).
Jim, is the idea in rooting and potting up the same year that by next spring you will have a little quart pots? Also- why not affiliate link those little trays and the leaf mist system? Would seem you could make more money that way.
Hi Jim, thanks so much for all your videos! I have a whole greenhouse full of rooted cuttings I took from around my garden after watching your videos. I’m getting ready to pot the rooted cuttings into bigger containers and I was wondering if you could suggest a good wholesale place to get trade gallon pots? I have a reseller permirt for another business so im looking for wholesale prices . Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the great video! I'm attempting to pot up oak leaf hydrangeas in mid june, keeping them indoors, a few feet away from the east window, and I mist them morning and afternoon. I have them in a potting soil mix and I put the growth hormone on the lower stem, cutting just like you did here in the video. I kept only part of one large leaf intact and buried the lower nodes in the soil. I don't water every day, just try to keep the soil moist. But still, they are shriveling up and the leaves are turning dark. Do you have any suggestions? Can this be done at all in summer, or is it only early spring or fall? I had read that the oakleaf hydrangeas are easy to start spring through fall, but I'm wondering about that. Thanks again!
Sorry for what I already know has been answered before: What sort of soil mix do you put the cuttings in and how do you maintain proper hydration in it? I have tried native soil, various potting mixes (pre-mix) and fail to propagate basically every time, even with "easy" things to propagate and it's starting to frustrate me way more than it should. I'm in coastal VA, very similar climate.
@@JimPutnam I have a Miss Lemon that I planted last year. I planted high like you suggested but it seems so wobbly, like it has thin stems coming from the ground. I hope it beefs up more.
Hey Jim, hope all is well. I am enjoying your videos. One question. I took a cutting from my father in-laws buttonbush. I didn't have access to Clonex (USPS lost it in the mail twice) so I just put the cuttings in a two inch pot with perlite and peat moss. I left one leaf on, cut the leaves in half as they were pretty large. Well, good news is they all three have rooted two weeks later. Bad news, two of the leaves got scorched and have fallen off. (I also don't have a mister so I was doing the best I could keeping the leaves moist) Will these leafless cuttings with roots survive?
Jim I have been looking locally here around Nashville Tennessee for the razzmatazz grape vine. Can not find it. My question is where is a good place to mail order one? Thank you
HortTube with Jim Putnam thank you! I have a fabulous garden but have never tried propagation. I have some fabulous old oakleafs that I’ll try this with. Thx for the content!!!
What do you do with them through winter? Do you stick them in the ground and let them weather it out or do you keep them in a greenhouse or something? I just took cuttings and I'm now wondering what the heck I do with them if they do successfully root in....
June Wakefield my pachysandra grows so fast and literally comes up everywhere through underground roots. Just give it a little time and you’ll have more than you ever wanted.
I am 5 weeks into my propagation, I'll be giving my japanese maples a bit longer but I have 1 crepe myrtle that I think is ready to be potted. It's had new growth on it for weeks and I've felt the tension for some time as well. Do you think I'm ready to get it out in the open? How much sun do you think it should/could take?
@@JimPutnam that's what I was thinking as well. I'm so excited. Just hit gardening hard this spring and already propagating. I know crepe myrtle's are pretty inexpensive but money saved is money saved and its just so cool to see the wonder of this. Love your channel, I've learned everything I know from mostly you and spread your name to everyone who'll listen.
Love the water sound effect in the beginning. Very relaxing ASMR!

Love new plants!!!
Working on my own cutting trying to put in practice everything
Nice. Good luck with them
Man this was so helpful!!!
Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Oh, I’ve wanted an Edward Goucher Abelia. I was wondering if I could do it from cuttings. So happy that it can root easily.
Goop hand cleaner will remove sticky sap on your hands
open source plants :D

You would be fine trying again. Plenty of time

wondering how exyensive hydrangea roots get. i want to put them along the fence, but suspect the plumbing supply line may be 2ft below the surface.

I am wondering why you are using cell trays when you put 3 in one. Seems like an open tray would give more room at the same density.
Idea: zoom in or get a white background-thnx!
How long will it take those Abelia and hydrangea cuttings to get to a decent size to plant in the garden?
The Abelia will grow fast in the spring. Oakleaf Hydrangeas probably next fall

Anita Hadley do you have clay soil?
@@elsagrace3893 I do. I also use pine bark soil conditioner when planting.
How are your Camilla cuttings doing? Roots yet?
No roots, but they are callusing. They swell a lot before they root.

Plantbymail has had them
HortTube with Jim Putnam thanks I will order from there.
They don’t have any...whew
Jim, on the Oakleaf hydrangea, how long does it take to get big enough to plant in ground? By spring? Longer?
Spring I will root out into a small pot. Probably best for the ground next fall

The plant patent police! Lol 🙄
👋😄
Jim is there a difference between confederate / star jasmine and on the other hand Madison jasmine?
Confederate is almost my favorite vine. Evergreen, fragrant, healthy always and grow fast. Tfs. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
Thanks for this tip, I´m always on hunt for evergreen plants.
Thank you!!! You have taught me so much over the last year.

I'm in the same zone as you are, and want to
propagate pachysandra. What time of year would
I do that?

Just start with a few hours in the morning and give them a little more each day. Maybe one week to full sun.
