I live in CT and started hiking about 6 years ago. One of the first things I bought was a head big net. Even if there are no gnats or mosquitos, bother deer flies and horse flies can follow you for miles making your hike a living hell. Happy trails!
To get bugs out of your ear, without aggravating them, simply tilt your head so that your ear is facing the sky.
Then slowly pour a warm beverage into your ear. (Tea if you're British😌).
The bug will then gently float to the surface.
I remember being told to do that with warm olive oil.

A bug in the ear sucks, you can feel and hear it moving around. I had one in my ear but it didn't really bother me enough to stop. Later at camp, it was still in there and when flushing with water didn't work, a buddy had a suggestion. He packed some baby oil, poured some in my ear to flush it out and it worked on the first try. He was a nurse and said that's how they do it in the doctor's office. A little warm baby oil to drown it and make it lose it's grip so it can come out. And if it's a stubborn one, they leave the baby oil to soak about 10 mins before flushing the oil out with warm water, the bug usually comes out with the oil.
Worse than that time; on another hike years earlier, we encountered a swarm of gnats on trail so I put on a bug net. Once we were out of the swarm, I took off the bug net and shook it off to get those clingers off and one flew right into my eye. I tried flushing it out with water but it wouldn't come out. I could feel it squirming and thrashing under my eyelid for a long time before it stopped. (It died in my eye!) Hours later when we made camp, I was finally able to properly flush it out. But unfortunately, my eye stayed itchy and irritated for another couple of days. My eye wasn't actually injured or anything harsh like that but it felt like an red and itchy eye infection for a day or two before it cleared up in it's own. While I was still "red eyed" from that gnat, I met other people who had their own swarm encounters. Some with gnats in their eyes and ears and others who had gnats go up their noses and into their mouths. Yuk! So it could have been worse if I hadn't have had my bug net.

Great day other than the bug. Happened to me once when I was at work on the nightshift. My little bug sounded like a giant bee in my ears when it flapped its wings. Was driving me crazy. Finally crawled back out, what a relief. Hope you enjoy the cake. Hike on and be safe.

If that bug is still in your ear you will know it. Every time you open your jaw wide it will compress and you will hear its wings crush. Pharmacist have ear flush bulbs and use warm ear cleaning fluid .Grapefruit seed extract is a common one and tea tree oil is also common at most pharmacies.
People on the trail are always ready to help each other. It is very good!

When a Bug flies into your left ear, pour the water into your right ear while tilting your left ear down to flush it out.
The two ears aren't connected. There is a thing called a brain in between them.

Morning Kelly! Nine lives is a good trail name! Congrats! What a stunningly beautiful section of trail today. I carry q-tips in my emergency kit just for that exact reason! I can deal with a dead bug carcass in my ear but not a live one! That water bottle cap trick was a clever idea, it also made for some great video! I have to say, your hiking partners are so lucky to get to experience your ridiculous energy first hand! You really are living your best life and damn it’s inspiring to watch. Kelly, if the bug's still in, lie down a while with the "bug-ear" facing up. If you put stuff in your ear, the bug's going to try to escape by going AWAY from the invader---which is away from the opening. If you leave it undisturbed for a while, maybe he will crawl to the light---OUT of your ear. Worth a try!
Kelly once when i had the same problem, they killed the bug with oil and then just flushed my ear out. Good luck. Take it easy. and be safe.critter lee

A contestant on Alone - Season 7 had a bug fly in his ear. It was buzzing and driving him insane. He used a syringe from his first aid kit to wash it out since he was alone. Keep up the good work!
Dude got a bug in his ear on the last season of Alone too. You handled it much better than he did. He totally freaked.

If you can try to get the ones with hollow plastic bodies. Gives your qtip another use as a tiny straw :) I never go out on trail without qtips. So many uses!

My step dad had a bug crawl into his ear and to see the Docotor to haveit removed. Th Doctor used a bright light to coax the bug out, as they are attracted to light. If it happens gain give it a try.

If you get a bug in your ear again roll up a thin tube of duct tape, sticky part on the outside. Have somebody insert it in your ear and touch it on the bug and it will stick to the tube. Easy peasy

Laughed so much on this video. I don’t know how to get bugs out but my son got an eraser stuck in his ear once and the er used these really long tweezers to pull it out so my guess would be to just reach in there and yank the bug out. Also trail question, did you pay $59.99 for the guthooks AT guide? Is it worth the money?

I heard Morse Code and then someone receiving a radio signal either by FM or SSB when Chris was trying to remove the bug. I guess they were some Amateur Radio operators out on trail doing Summits On the Air? Sorry about the bug, hopefully you get it removed easily. Several years back when the baby boy had to have tonsils removed, during pre-op the Dr found a big in his ear and removed it. Great trail name!

I thought the same thing! I usually lose my toothpick but I’ve still got my tweezers, even in my knife I got back in the 80’s!
@@gratefulhikes I got my intro to Swiss Army knives in the 1980's too. I watched again, and found another angle to see what the hiker has in this vid. His is more like a tiny Leatherman that folds. The burgundy had me thinking it was a Swiss Army knife.

When I had a ant in my ear I could hear n feel it moving n the nurse told me to go in a dark place and hold a light to my ear that the bug went in n make sure I plug the other side depending on how dark the room is. Supposedly the bug will follow the light out for me it worked.
I was driving in Sequoia a few weeks ago, had my window down and some sort of flying bug flew right into my car and directly into my ear. Hurt like a son a bitch.

Bug in the ear really sucks. I met another guy that happened to he could feel it fluttering around in his ear all night. He went to the ER the next day and they got it out. Nine Lives seems to fit well!!!
