    The special days,
    In so many ways,
    touch the heart,
    of Kelly Hays.
    What a day indeed!

The piles of stones were generally made in the late 1700s and early to mid 1800s. They were the pickens from plowing. In winter, the stones were moved to build stone walls and other things. If you look closely, there are many different styles of walls. The entire trail is a learning experience. Have fun. Good Luck, Rick

Morning Kelly! Welcome to 700! Rainy morning watching YT, nice! You don’t smell disgusting, you smell like a hiker living their best life!!! So cool you stopped by the memorial, such a meaningful place. It’s because of people like him that you get to see views like you did ❤️ Great choice to have a big mile day with more memories instead of a huge mile day with nothing but your head down. I will take that seat on dragons tooth over extra miles any day! You better know you should get emotional all you want! It is f’in amazing! What you are doing is next level bad ass! I would be worried if you weren’t emotional. It must be so comforting to have the trail and your faith provide when you need it most. Such an epically beautiful section of trail. I know I say that a lot but it’s true! So cool you got to hang with your tramily at the hostel. Family, friends, freedom, faith, food, the trail and the greatest band in all the land. What else do we need! Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well.
    -Grateful

Rock Stacks are highly likely left overs from farmers long ago trying to clear their fields to some degree. Lots of those in the Smokies.

    • @danielkutcher5704

...and in New England, where farmers, tired of the frost pushing more rocks out of the ground every winter, forcing them to remove them before planting in the spring, eventually packed up and headed out to the fertile, mostly rock-free soil of the Great Plains.

Congrats on the mileage. I’m so glad you are taking the time to enjoy the trail and soak it all in. The rock piles as another as mentioned, I’ll probably the result of clearing the field for livestock or cultivation. Cattle do not do well in rocky soils. Sleds were pulled behind horses and the rocks collected. Later they could be used for fences/walls, building foundations, etc.

Piles of rocks in the woods are usually field rocks. Farmers picking the rocks out of their field. Farm abandoned, then grown up into woods. I have rocks piles all over the woods. By the way, the hard times do make the best memories.

Random piles of rocks... I am guessing sometime in the past, people tried to clear and cultivate the land.... they probably left all the boulders in a big pile and that's what you are seeing.. some places like up in NY and ME, farmers used the boulders to make fences.... :)

    • @gratefulhikes

100% correct. It’s sometimes hard to imagine entire forests clear cut and used as fields but those walls or piles of rocks are all that is left of the times when we thought we could tame and use the earth. But in the end, The forest return and with them balance ❤️

I never understood people who got the Virginia blues. Virginia is gorgeous. It has so many beautiful spots to appreciate and wonderful views and amazingly difficult mountains to climb. I love your approach to it. You can focus on making big miles when you get to Maryland and Pennsylvania, mostly because they are relatively flat, but also because the rocks at the north end of PA are tedious and they will beat you up if you let them.
Oh and CONGRATS ON 500 MILES 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Hey 9 Lives...Sometimes it's easy to think that things "just happen," like meeting those ladies who prayed with you and encouraged you. But then those of us who know there is "something" on the trail greater than ourselves, know that nothing "just happens." When we read, "Acknowledge Him in all thy ways, and He shall direct thy paths," and "The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will," we're reminded: God is in control. He causes some things to happen, and He allows some things to happen, but nothing "just happens" without His control... like meeting strangers on a trail who touch your heart and warm your day.

    • @mb692100
      @mb692100 3 роки тому +3

So good to see you refer to "Pilgrim's Progress." John Bunyan's classic is as valuable today as when it was written in 1678. I always suggest to potential thru-hikers to read it before starting. Most don't have a clue why until they summit Katahdin... then they tell me they get it. Sadly, it's a neglected book today, but one wonders how much better this world would be if parents returned to the days of bringing up their children on Pilgrim's Progress, the Bible, church, prayer and plenty of time outdoors in Nature.

I'm glad you didn't just blow through just to get miles in. I mean, I'd still watch because I'm too invested at this point. If you blew through everyday, it would get repetitive pretty quick though. I've watched other thru hikes and they all bring something to the table but yours is unique to you. I admit that I'm a little biased. Day 6 tugged the heart strings! You're the only one I'm subbed to. Anyway, keep doing your thing. Haters can't stop it. The channel's still growing!

Good to see Four Pines again. A couple that I met during my Georgia to Hot Springs section hike might be there now!
I love that place! You have an amazing attitude. Don't rush through life making appointments to be where others want you to be, or you might miss out on the realization that you are where God needs you to be (for Him, for yourself, and, yes, for others who might need you to be Jesus for them). Religion doesn't give peace, joy, and eternal life - Jesus does!
