    Make sure you're holding your threads tails for your first couple of stitches. If you don't sometimes the thread will get back into the machine and could cause birdnesting or problems underneath. Also, make sure your bobbin thread is wound neat and evenly and rethread you're machine. If there's still issues, it might be time to take your machine in for maintenance.

    Wow! I have never really understood about tension, and have always had trouble with my tension settings. In fact I even put my sewing machine away for some years, thinking that there was something wrong with it. Now I really understand what the problem is, and feel confident about applying my new learning in the future.
    As I have finally got my sewing machine problems out of the 'too hard' basket, I am very happy that I have seen your video and now understand what the problems have been.

    The majority of bobbin cases have the lower thread tension screw you mentioned. If the lower thread loops above the fabric, then tighten (turn it clockwise) in tiny increments to likely solve it. Doing so keeps more bobbin thread below & brings the lock back to the middle of the fabric.
    Small loops below the fabric are an upper tension issue. The longer those loops become, the more likely the tension issue is related to threading, or the direction the bobbin turns in it's case.

    It depends on the type and some knits are heavier weight than others. I normally just have it at the normal setting, which for me is at a 4. The lighter and more slippery it is, the higher in numbers I go. Every machine is different and you just have to play around with it. Also, with some difficult fabrics, like lycra, I sew my seams with tissue paper on top and it helps it feed through the machine easier and my seams definitely look better. Then I just rip the tissue paper off.

    I just do that without even thinking about it. I don't know what other people do so I don't know if I'm abnormal. My reason for it is that you always have to hold your thread for at least the first couple of stitches. Otherwise, the thread gets sucked back, which sometimes causes this weird knot in the back of the fabric. For me, it's comfortable to hold it down with my left hand. I've never had a problem with it so I just do what feels comfortable. :)

    When you say bottom, do you mean bobbin tension? Mine machine doesn't have this so I don't know what would be normal on a Brother. You might have to ask someone at a Brother dealership. As for the top tension, a 4 puts me in the middle of the my tension dial. So the normal setting is just in the middle and then you adjust it depending on the weight of your fabric.

    I’m sewing a rayon challis skirt with side pockets, and need help with preventing puckered seams. I’ve adjusted my tension, but that hasn’t helped much. Right now I’m using tissue as I sew. I’d rather be able to sew it without the tissue. Do you know any tricks or special treatments I can try. I’ve also tried using my walking foot, and no go. I must be doing something wrong, but cannot figure out what it is. I’ve seen challis sewn in other videos and it looks so easy. I’d appreciate any suggestions. Thanks! I love your tutorials. I’ve learned so much.

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  5 років тому

      sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, as far as adjusting tension. It happens because the fabric is so delicate it doesn't have enough stabilization to stay flat while feeding through the machine. This is why the tissue paper helps, because it's stabilizing the fabric. If your fabric can be washed, you can also spray the fabric with spray starch and then wash it when finished to soften it up again.

    Hi. I consistently get the bobbin thread showing through to the top of the fabric. I have tried all numbers on my thread tension, "0" works best. I went to a sewing class recently where the teacher showed us to tighten the bobbin thread by removing the footplate and turning a little screw in the device that holds the bobbin, then reassembling and going again. What do you think about that?

      Barbara Perkins you're not using old thread are you? Old thread tends to shred and break. If not, you might need to take your machine in to be serviced, especially since you haven't used it in awhile. You can take it in to a sewing machine vacuum repair shop and it usually costs around $100

    have the same prob as Sydney here when I changed the bobbins, but couldnt figure how to solve this.

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  10 років тому

      sorry, I sent Sydney a pm because youtube wouldn't let me respond directly to her comment but here's what I said: First, make sure that when you sew your first couple of
      stitches that you're holding on to the thread tails. Otherwise, they'll
      start getting sucked back into the machine and it causes a bird nesting
      effect on the underside of the fabric. If that isn't the issue, check
      your manual. Some machines also have a tension adjustment on the bobbin
      case so the tension could be off on this. Make sure that your thread
      on the bobbin is nice and neat looking and try rethreading everything on
      your machine. If there's still an issue, you might have to take your
      machine in for maintenance. I hope this helps!
