    I use the face registry thing on Sony. I don't think it works, BUT it does blow the bride and groom away every. single. time. They get so much relief by the simple act of being registered with the camera. Sony and R5II users, try it. I swear by it. Not because it works, but because it FEELS like it COULD work to the average person.

    There is no doubt that the R5 mkII, is probably the best all round camera there is on the market, and for those who need some of its features and can afford it, it is a no brainer. But I agree with Tony, that for most people, the original R5 will do most of what the R5 mkII does, with the same resolution. In other words, even for a top photographer, with demanding needs, in most case scenarios, the output of the original R5, will be near identical to the R5 mkII. Yes, if you push your cameras to the limit, the mkII will be better, but most of the time, the original R5 will produce the same output, at nearly half the cost. This is no criticism of the R5 mkII, just an observation on it, as a photographic tool. I agree with Tony, that we's at a point, where we're not going to see quantum leaps, like say the original R5 over the 5D mkIV. I think cameras will still improve a lot, and over several generations, we'll see even better cameras, but not from one generation to the next, as cameras are reaching that good enough level, without serious limitations.

    I would love to hear a regular person's reaction to the way we talk about gear on UA-cam, where everything is the greatest camera we've seen or has so many flaws that make it unusable. The reality is that the current class of cameras are excellent and we all need to dial back some of the rhetoric. We're at a point where every channel grades every camera on how well they shoot sports, when only a small percentage of us (which is already a small group) shoot sports. Most people buying these cameras are going to shoot a wedding, an event, some landscapes, shooting video of something relatively slow paced or portraits.

    The Z8 manual says that the flash sync speed is 1/200th, not 1/160th. The Canon R5 MII is 1/200 mechanical, 1/250 electronic 1st curtain shutter according to the spec sheet. The other thing is that in a studio, if you're exposing for the flash well then the actual duration of the flash is what freezes the action, a Godox V1 has an effective flash duration is about 1/1440 sec at full power, and it gets quicker the less power you use (there is a website that has measured it with a Sekonic L-858D). The shutter speed will mainly benefit in preventing camera shake but 1/200 would be enough for that. Both cameras can do HSS.

      Possibly, but when using generative-Ai add and -remove, my images upload to the Adobe servers and get processed there. Since I fiddle around in Adobe and Topaz for about 10 minutes to make each shot perfect, that is simply not doable on a camera. Leave it for the smartphones. At least they have much bigger screens.

      I mean, I agree about weight. I'm a little confused about the prices that you're naming. Perhaps localization (UK cost is more) plus price deflation are playing a very large role here, but the initial retail price of Z8 was ~$4k and R5ii is ~$4.3k. I will agree with you that the Z8 seems the better value proposition (probably the best in Nikon's lineup), but maybe compare new price v new price (not the huge markdown of the Z8 which I guess means it's lost a lot of its initial value for some reason?), and also don't include conversion to USD when the prices in US / CA / AU, etc are quite different and not so extreme...
      And yeah the R1 seems a bit underwhelming for the cost! :S

Flexibility of autofocus system and how well it tracks and nails focus is nothing short of amazing. But this new R5 II is basically a R6 II with electronic mode dial and 45 BSI sensor with more than twice as fast read out speed as R6II or R5. Then add one of the most sophisticated autofocus systems available and 30 fps Raw and what is not to love on this camera. That new action sport mode is very interesting, why couldn't you add birds and wildlife also? Load images just like you can people if you want to target certain species. eg they've added Full HDMI, added stacked sensor and faster readout speed but then still keep the slower SD slot instead of have two CF slots to allow for redundancy...thereby slowing down the camera if wanting to have recording to two slots
    The Neural Denoise and Upscaling are just gimmicks in the body as you alleviate too, its the same with manufacturers and pixel-shift - how many people are really going to be using that (especially outside locations when the weather has an affect on items being blown about)

Mirrorless is a great home for that kind of resolution; we have the compute ability and fast enough storage these days to really make a compelling camera around that kind of resolution. I remember when Canon was a company that *out of nowhere* took its 5D Mark III and said "look at what we can do when we let the engineering department run wild" and gave us the 5DS R, which more than doubled resolution and set the 50MP resolution bar as a shot across the bow of the other manufacturers *IN 2016.* Where is that Canon today?! Also, the original R5 cost $3899, but this mild refresh is now worth $400 more at $4299??? I remember when the 5D Mark IV cost $100 more to get the 24-70 f/4 thrown in at launch.

  • @hibhaven
    @hibhaven 2 місяці тому

    Well, advance in technology and features is always a welcome thing, because over time, the difference in features and capabilities of an equipment becomes significant. And I guess 99% photographers (and that includes me) barely survive to make a living through photography, to be able to upgrade with every new release. I do weddings, travel and landscape, and currently the 5D Mk4 is my primary camera. In many cases, when not doing professional shoots, I still carry my 5D Mk2 with me, and usually return with great shots.
    Here are my general thoughts, which I believe is applicable to most professional photographers:
    1. I guess it's an extremely small niche of photographer (less than 1% ) who ACTUALLY require features like 1000 fps, or 20000 MP etc etc etc.. Most of us DESIRE to have such features because it makes us feel good, but rarely have any ACTUAL need of it.
    2. I don't think I would ever switch from Canon to any other brand, irrespective of the features or price (within reasonable range), as the overall cost of switching is unfathomable for me. I guess this applies to lots of photographers (has nothing to do with loyalty). Though I do have several colleagues and team members who have switched to new brands every year (though there is no difference in the quality of their work or business). HENCE, while it is good to do cross-brand comparison, I doubt it has any practical impact on people actually switching brands (I agree a lot of people switched to Sony around 2016-2017, but that I because they revolutionised the Mirrorless market, and Canon/ Nikon were caught on the back foot).
    3. After a certain level of technology improvement, I am mostly looking for ease of use and additional logistical features in my camera. for e.g. a fully rotating screen, ease of carrying the camera, a better/easier way to fit ND filter kit around the lens etc etc etc (basically features that are NOT technical in nature).
    4. Auto focus (speed, accuracy and ease of switching btn modes of AF) is the only real game in photography. The rest is just fluff (I know I am exaggerating here).
    5. The largest print that I or any of my clients have ever printed is 24x36 inches, so ideally a 12 megapixel camera suffices. At one end, camera manufacturers and constantly competing on 'my camera has more megapixels than yours', the end consumer is only switching to smaller and smaller screens for viewing their content. On any modern phone, 1920x1080 footage is more than acceptable. For a camera, 24 megapixels is the idea sweet spot, which I think Canon has aptly realised.
    6. I and most of my peers/ friends have modern TVs and phones, but I dont think any of us have ever watched a 4K footage or channel. Even for YT channels that shoot in 4k, I switch to 1080p. We are probably a decade away from mass adoption of the 'need' to watch anything in 4K. So the ability to shoot in 6k or 8k is more of a need for the photographer/ videographer to be able to crop during editing, rather than a need for the viewer to watch in that resolution.
    I am aware this sounds extreme, but feel it's more of a practical approach. If I were a YT reviewer, I'd probably nit-pick every feature of every camera and shred it to pieces for not meeting 'our' expectations, but atleast in my mind, I'd be very clear about what needs to be said on camera (becuz thats what people want to hear) versus what I'd practically do. Phew.

    Not to detract from this amazingly convenient summary of info, thank you for that, but what's going on with the framerate in this video? Sometimes duplicated, other times tripled frames. Hitching all over the place.
    No dropped frames on my end, it's encoded in the video. You can see it clearly when you go frame by frame.

    Love the video. My R5 is great for bird photography in most cases. Getting rid of the rolling shutter would be a reason to switch but I’ll wait for the next gen. For Weddings the original is still a great option.

    I've an R5 (love it) as my main camera as I mostly shoot Landscapes but have an R6 Mkii as my backup camera and for wildlife so I think any spend I do will be on glass. I recall a lot of pros jumped from their Sony A7Riii's to A7Rv's and wonder if that's going to be more of the pattern now. Some will always upgrade to latest camera/phone/car whilst others are quite happy to skip 1 or two models and then upgrade when the cumulative gains add up to something significant?

    But if you are in eye-AF, you can't tell it to use a specific focus point. You have to switch out of eye-AF to do it. If you use eye-AF + pre-registered faces, you get the best of both worlds.

    Awesome camera! Registering 10 faces in a camera is a big plus feature. It may not be an everyday application that we use, but it's nice to know it's an advancement of technology. I just wish they added more megapixels to the EOS R5 Mark II, say around 15 mega. So it's a 60 mega pixels all in all. The 8K video is a bonus, but they should have made the storage both CF express card since we are dealing with big data in using 8K video. Overall, in my humble opinion, EOS R5 Mark II is a better pick than the EOS R1 or the R3.

  • @scherge

    I'm going to wait until the first bugs and glitches have been dealt with (just remember the overheating issues at the R5's launch), but I will get the R5mII eventually. I love the R6mII, but in some situations the 24MP can be a bit limiting. Same with clog3 and only 10bit RAW when shooting at 40fps. And having wished one too many times to be able to just look at the object that I want to focus on, I really want that Eye-AF. Those two camera bodies are going to meet every demand that I could ever have regarding photography and videography.
    The R1 seems a bit too pricey, but getting the R5mII at a 10% discount or so actually feels pretty fair to me, considering its specs.

  • @izziereal2010
    @izziereal2010 2 місяці тому

    The R5 II is definitely a camera to perform very well. At $4,300 USD, there are other options to choose from, such as the first Canon R5 with the 24-105mm f4 lens for $4,000 USD or the Nikon Z8 with the 24-120mm f4 lens for $4,400 USD. For the money, someone must really need the R5 II for professional work to overlook the other options.

    Regarding AI upscaling:
    The R5 Mark I got a HighRes mode with a firmware update. For me it looked like a beta version and I did not understand why the published it. However: As far as I could figure out this mode was removed with the R5 Mark II. That could mean there is a HighRes R Camera in the pipeline. Or it could mean Canon was not able to implement it in high quality. So they decided to ship the camera with an AI upscaling - just for those who wanted the HiRes mode in the Mark II.

      @brooksfriess3139 the r5ii will be a better camera for wildlife and sports due to its speed. It depends on if you can accept 10 fps, and are willing to pay $4300 for the brand new camera. Currently, the z8 is a better deal for that genre.

    I think there's one big leap in camera technology ahead of us - computational photography like we have in our smartphones. They made a huge leap in image quality with small sensor cameras, I'm kind of surprised it's taken us this long and we still don't have the same technology in our large sensor cameras.

    I wouldn't bash canon for trying to innovate, especially when they are not forcing it on anyone. I don't want to go back to the days when Canon removes already established features to make their higher end cameras look better. Let's just hope these features get better, the concept of eye controlled AF could be the next best thing.

    Thank you. I was considering this to supersede my current EOS R5 and make that a backup RF body but I do shoot both Sony and Canon and it really doesn’t look like it will replace my A1’s. I’m a stills shooter so the flippy screen is not a necessity although I like its high quality LCD. While the A1 still cost more I’ve had mine since early 2021 so I guess IMHO i chose wisely as the Grail Knight said. Still like the R5 I have and the L lenses even though Canon is sooo slow to release RF L primes wider than 50mm to use on cameras designed for landscape and architecture. Take care.

    Agreed the uprez is dumb, the denoise is nice thought but in practical terms not very usable. I mean the only potentially use I can see for that is if you deliver something at an event and you want to deny it before you copy it over to your phone or something but chances are if you’re giving them something on your phone it’s probably not very high anyway or if you’re doing a little print out of one of those small printers again it’s not very high Rez where the denoising is probably gonna make much of a difference. And yeah, you do that in post processing
