  • Humans have consumed alcohol for centuries and will continue to do so for centuries to come. This is not an Anti-Alcohol speech, villainizing substance use altogether, but rather a look at how this society is ignoring a major problem.
Right now, we are facing a mental health crisis along with unattainable treatment for these issues, and at the same time, it seems like our society is entirely obsessed with alcohol and the numbing and pleasurable feeling that it brings. It's become our go-to coping mechanism, and it seems like the global pandemic has only exacerbated the issue.
With so much going on that we want to shut off from, it's understandable that we may turn to alcohol from time to time, however with the spikes in addiction rates rising, it's clear that we have normalized and glorified alcohol to dangerous levels.
We need to be talking to our children about the dangers of addictions. We need to be talking to our children about mental health and healthy coping mechanisms. We need to be discussing these things early and often to avoid a challenging future for our children. As of 2020, 1 in 5 Canadians fit the criteria for substance use disorder, and if we don't start having these conversations, that number will only rise.
