I'm from Australia and alcohol is like a protected species over here. It's inbedded in our culture to the point of it can't be held responsible for almost anything. I'm 2 years sober because I didn't want to pass that attitude onto my kids and it's the best thing I have ever done.

There are other options too, hardest thing is admitting and accepting you have an issue. Which ever road you take its worth the effort. So much more fun to have without booze. PM me if you like. 👍🏻

Spent all my time schooling my son about drugs, and what they do and which ones can control you. Not even thinking about alcohol. I just never thought about it. I've done every drug I can get, so I wanted to give him reasons not to. I said weed ain't bad, but it can be a gateway if something else is around. Long story short, his mom and stepdad drank with him at 18. Thinking it was okay cause he was at home, that's the dumbest shit. It just makes kids feel safer to drink anywhere. My son died at 19 drunk driving. Fuck Alcohol, it the worst drug!
I feel sympathy toward anyone who has a problem with alcohol. It's the most readily accessible vice, and is perceived in culture as a norm. As a recovering heroin addict, I couldn't imagine if my drug of choice was advertised nationally and available at almost every convenience store, restaurant, etc. Props to those who can stay away from it.
It is insidious. I recently quit drinking after noticing I started buying mini bottles of spirits and drinking them in the street before a night out, then having whiskies with my beers, and the increased tolerance and bad irrational behaviour.
As a smoker, I can give you one big reason why people are more accepting of alcohol over cigarettes. If I'm drinking a beer next to you, you're not going to get second hand drunk.
Ape Beats but there are still a lot of second hand effects of drinking like drunk driving/ other accidents, rape, violence. Society has just not been willing to paint alcohol black like they have cigarettes.
@@GrayShark18 I completely agree with you, but the majority of people dont think about it in that manner. If I light a cigarette in the middle of a crowd, it's an instantaneous affect for everyone in my proximity, whereas if I crack open a beer, no one would really care. I'm just saying it's looked at differently because smoking in public forces people to breathe in that smoke, whereas drinking in public doesn't directly influence the public until a consequence rises from the action of being drunk.
Yeah but the person next to you could get a second hand punch or a second hand glass in the face if they look at you funny. And I don't specifically mean you. I mean the next guy. @@deanmeat3427 That's my point. You could chug a bottle of liquor and destroy your house all by your lonesome. I'm not defending alcohol. It's a terrible vice that kills thousands of people directly and indirectly. Yes, a drunk person can do something to harm someone just because they're drunk. But in our society, the most you see to dissuade alcohol use are "Drink responsibly" and "Don't drink and drive" ads. Whereas tobacco use is 100% negative these days. I still remember Joe Cool from my childhood. My point, and this is the last time I'm going to make it, is smoking in public directly affects anyone close enough to inhale my smoke. If I get plastered, I have to take an action to harm someone in my drunken state. Yes, they're both terrible. Yes, they both kill. My older sister made me never want to drink. She was kind of cruel when she was a teen, but once she started drinking, she was the Antichrist. She always abused my parents physically and mentally while drunk. She said and did unforgivable things, especially to our severely disabled father, such as telling him that she would break his back again during an argument or hitting him because he was basically defenseless. (He was the passenger in a terrible car accident which literally shattered his spine when we were kids.) I’m 30 now, I don’t drink and have never taken drugs of any kind. I got blackout drunk when I was a teenager and my younger brother had to take care of me all night. Scared him straight, I've never seen him drink more than one drink on very special occasions. He's the lucky one.

Nah, it's just a cultural thing. Europeans have been producing alcoholic beverages for ever. It is engrained in our cultural tissue. Pot isn't, yet it is in muslim countries, where alcohol consumption is illegal. Both aren't healthy by any stretch of the immagination, yet cultures do work like that.
As someone that has overdone alcohol multiple times in the past, i feel like alcohol will stay legal for a long time. I found that it kind of shuts down people. The very few dreams and goals you had, vanish when you get few shots. All of it stops mattering. Then, when addiction kicks in, the only goal in life that stays, is getting enough money just to get fucked up again. So, it will stay legal because it's profitable, even though highly destructive to society in general.
You simply can’t make alcohol illegal again. Prohibition was the reason the mafia was able to gain so much power. The longer they keep drugs of all kinds illegal, the longer cartels and drug dealers will keep going. It will never stop. If there is a demand for drugs, and as long as there is a demand for alcohol, there will always be somebody ready and willing to meet that demand. It can’t be stopped.
@Peder Hansen you just ignored his point completely. Sounds like you’re just trying to justify your use of alcohol. Fruits and veg have tons more antioxidants, why don’t you start eating salads? Oh because you’re obsessed with the high you get from scotch whiskey.
I’m an alcoholic. I appreciate Joe being cognizant of people like me when discussing alcohol. Not to say he shouldn’t say he enjoys it. But in a world where alcohol is glorified, pretty much everywhere, it’s nice that he at least thinks about people like me before speaking on it.
I just finished my last beer...thankfully...I think ahead and buy a bottle of scotch. I know I am in the spiral...the outcome is literally unthinkable compared to right fucking now.
"This, for me, is the saddest thing about smoking: the only ‘enjoyment’ a smoker gets from a cigarette is temporary relief from the discomfort created by the previous one." Allen Carr's Easyway (He makes the similar point about drinking in his Easyway to stop drinking book)
I became an alcoholic at 20 due to trauma, depression, and anxiety. One night I just passed out while standing and fell face first into a thorny bush, nearly lost my sight in my left eye. Made a full recovery luckily. I decided that this was a problem and went cold turkey on my own volition, no intervention by friends and family, just me deciding what‘s best for me when I was at my lowest. I still have a drink from time to time (maybe one every couple months or so), but it was the best decision of my life to quit the habit.
I drank for about six years and it got fairly heavy. Then I went out with friends one night to go drinking and it just wasn’t fun. I decided to take a break and then never wanted to do it again. Was a great decision. Once I quit i became aware of how much it was holding me back
That's how I got addicted. Cheaper than cigars, gave a nice head rush. Smoked a couple days thinking "oh, well I'm not addicted so I must be a different case" then bam, felt like I needed them a week or so later.
I'm glad that I came across this clip because, after almost a decade, I am finally coming to grips with this fact. Alcohol is just as bad or worse than any other toxic substance you can put in your body. It affects people differently. For some people, one drink can cause cravings for it for the rest of the week. A lot of times people justify these cravings, "this beer is perfect with my wings," or "one drink is basically nothing." It's all because the body is craving it. Some people are fortunate enough to where they can have a drink and not care if they had another for a month. For others, a drink is a slippery slope. I am giving up alcohol because I am tired of looking back at life and wondering what could have been if I were sober. I want to feel better. I want to have deep meaningful relationships. I want to say I've reached my potential. For all of those who are with me on this journey, congratulations. Here's an ice-water toast to all those who have decided to shed the baggage of alcoholism and propel themselves into a higher caliber of human being.

Stay off it i went completely alcohol free last year, had a few beers in january and decided now to give it up for good drinking alcohol is pointless for me now!
I'm not an "alcoholic" but rather a "normal drinker" by standard terms. I became a nondrinker this year - and it's been a real revelation. It takes months to see what not drinking is like (the effects linger), and how addicted we normal drinkers are. Think about it, most of us can't imagine having a good time going to a party or a game or a show without alcohol. Quitting is crazy, we think alcohol does so much for us, makes things fun, makes us relaxed, and makes us more more social. In reality, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Love my mornings now, and if I really want to treat myself to something, I'll have a little weed. Never going back to alcohol and don't miss it at all.
No it really does make you find things more fun and also makes you feel way more relaxed, its just the morning after that the negative impacts kick in. Dont act like it doesn't do those things.
Always amazes me how all the people who have quite drinking and can now ‘have fun’ and ‘socialise’ without it don’t turn up to parties. I don’t care if you drink, props to you for not and I say the same to my friends who have quit. However, it almost always, makes you fucking boring!
@American Hero I'm gonna have to step in and fart in your face a little bit here. Lots of alcohol vs a little weed are two completely different things and I'm willing to bet you've never had a drinking problem if you think they're even remotely equal.

You know that marijuana addiction is NOTHING compared to alcohol addiction, right? Alcohol is GABAergic. This class of drugs is the most addicting one. Its definitely different for everybody, but I believe it's all in the first time, and gender. I don't know what it is but from what I've experienced is that men like weed much more than alcohol, whereas with women they tend to like alcohol more than weed, of course im not saying they don't, but i know plenty who would pass on a joint or bong rip but be all in for a shot or three
@@BigBootySeeker2 I've noticed that too and I think it has to do with legality and stigma. I think females tend to abide by laws more and be turned off by bad stigmas such as the whole "weed is a bad drug that makes you lazy" crap. I think men don't care as much about that.
I am the same way at this point in my life, when I was younger, it didn't affect me like that. I smoked everyday for 6 years or so, when I quit for a year and started back, it just was never the same.
I’ve just gotta say, I’ve used, abused and quit every drug on the planet from alcohol to meth to fentanyl and I’ve never been able to quit smoking cigarettes. If you have a chance to avoid nicotine by all means do because it’s the hardest drug to kick.
While I don't know if I would go as far as to say that they are "good" for you (I'm well aware of the possible positive impact on people with PTSD and depression, however I wouldn't put that under the the same category of "good"as any nutritious. More legitimate clinical research just needs to be performed in a non-biased setting
My mental health and addiction commission in my state in Australia crunched the numbers and this is what it was . If you got all the harms caused by all the illegal 'drugs' and combined them , alcohol by itself would cause 3x as much harm . From risk to yourself and others , to injury caused whilst under the influence, to medical issues caused by consumption, alcohol is 3x worse than all other drugs combined . Nobody talks about that , the crazy thing is I work in mental health and addiction services for the government and people in the office are very nonchalant about their alcohol use , but as soon as I mention the positive impact my past use of plant medicines have been you can see the worry wash over their face . Society is brainwashed .
They benefit off us being drunk, dumb, & sick. Authority don benefit off us knowing about a cancer curing medicine. It can't be in your hands you gotta get the "medicine" from them. It's indoctrination, highly manipulated society & it infuriates me because my god fearing mother tried to throw my weed pipe and bag away...
That's mostly because alcohol is used five times as much as all other (psychoactive) drugs combined. If 70% of the population were abusing opioids, you'd see a million deaths a year in the US from them. As it is we're seeing about 80,000 a year. I've lost more friends to opioids than car crashes, guns, alcohol, and cigarettes combined. Granted, few other drugs are that lethal, but barbiturates are probably still more lethal and just as addictive as alcohol.
Sobriety from weed and replacing it with drinking ruined my life, destroyed my savings, and made me have the outlook "One more day closer to death". @@medicah It's more about the culture built around alcohol. In ancient times, wine was the foundation of the Roman empire because it crudely cleaned water. It's very difficult to separate something so easy to make from humans.
I drink far too much alcohol and have cut back a lot recently. Indica relaxes your muscles and makes you feel sleepy while sativa keeps you energized and stimulated creative activity it is not just due to body chemistry. Would people consider mid strain in the cannabis community because they do not get them as high as really just regular weed. Canna tonic , sour tsnumai , tangelo flow are some good strains for beginners

Best and worst times of my life on alcohol. I think that’s the reason it’s gets a bigger pass. Helps you get laid, meet new friends, make new business connections, have conversations you wouldn’t otherwise have! Obviously terrible for physical health overall.
I'm finally sober. Only three weeks in, and not my first attempt, but this time I am committed to fighting against the demon that has controlled me and destroyed my life for too long. You can buy alcohol anywhere. You don't need a car and once you are old enough, you don't even need an ID. If you are an alcoholic or struggle with a substance use disorder, it's very difficult to get clean. Environmental problems are difficult beasts. Constant triggers. You have to really want to be sober and have a support system to succeed.
Good luck Alex! Believe me it gets easier. The key for me was to stay busy - work, exercise, binge watch Rick and Morty, whatever. If you fall off, don't beat yourself up, it's practice. My life is a million times better but it takes a while. When you get past this, you won't miss it!
Hi there!! This post is nine months old. I hope you’re doing well in your journey of staying alcohol free. I’m here to tell you it’s possible I did it almost 3 years ago. I encourage you to explore the reasons why you were drinking. I found the alcohol was not the problem -it was the unresolved trauma. When I decided to face and resolve the trauma, it was much much easier to stay sober. Hope you’re doing well today❤ Dr Gabor Mate is an expert on addiction. Please look him up.
Back in the time I was more depressed, Marijuana was cool to cool things off sometimes. I was always thinking in weird paths without focus. It was fun to just stop being serious and chill a little. It had the effect of resetting me so I can keep going. I took it once a month and now I smoke Marijuana once per 2 or 3 month. Personally I would recommend trying it at least once if you don't have medical restrictions of course. And for the sake of the story, I am no longer depressed because I went to get help and gave my 100% during one month and I managed to cure my depression after 5 years, its a win.
Ape Beats that makes sense, it’s more immediately apparent.

I wasn't able to have a good time and be social before I turned 21. There's a reason I was so depressed as a teenager.
Love this comment. just turned 20 but i’m 3 months dry. Only weed and shrooms for me now and I don’t plan on going back
@American Hero I'm gonna have to step in and fart in your face a little bit here. Lots of alcohol vs a little weed are two completely different things and I'm willing to bet you've never had a drinking problem if you think they're even remotely equal.
I think alcohol is a throwback to a time when water wasn’t safe to drink.
Nope. It's all because if taxes. Why else would they make weed legal in most states. Tax money. That's why the irs agents go after moonshiners
@@Trafficcoordinator If it was all about taxes, they'd make drugs legal and tax those. Alcohol being acceptable and fashionable predates alcohol taxes by several centuries.

It’s a terrible feeling living with alcoholic parents/parent. Living with the daily fact that it will kill them and despite all you do, it’s not enough. Constantly not being yourself or comfortable because you have to walk on the edge of a explosion. And the worst is seeing them sick. I hope everyone suffering from addiction finds their sobriety.
You mean like marijuana addiction , cannibis king ?
You want people to find their sobriety from marijuana addiction too or only SOME drug addictions like alcohol addiction ?
You know that marijuana addiction is NOTHING compared to alcohol addiction, right? Alcohol is GABAergic. This class of drugs is the most addicting one. Alcohol is one of the few drugs where stopping cold turkey in some cases leads to DEATH. Can never happen with Cannabis. The withdrawal symptoms of alcohol are insane. Cannabis withdrawal usually is NOTHING compared to this, maybe dysphoria and insomnia for a few days. (I'm not saying Cannabis addiction is good, no addiction is good!) Also, (chronic) alcohol consumption poses some big risks for the human body, unlike Cannabis. If I had to choose between those two addictions, guess what, I'll take Cannabis, the one that doesn't kill you. This shouldn't even be a debate...
Again, Cannabis addiction is BAD.
@@3-methylindole730 marijuana was the first drug addiction I ever had . And it wasn't pretty . Not too long after that I quit marijuana and became addicted to alcohol . The most destructive. The worst decisions I’ve ever made was when drinking alcohol.
Hands-down, the stupidest decisions and the biggest regrets I have in my life are due to alcohol. I completely get you and I can completely relate……. Some of the things that I’ve done while drunk will, to this day, make me bolt upright out of my sleep, and have me putting my head in my hands and embarrassment and shame.
Lost my both parents to alcohol. My mom when I was 23, my dad when I was 36. I'm expecting my first kid later this year and the lost potential is devastating.
I'm really sorry to hear that. Congratulations on your kid

@@ABa-ve3ul (Sorry for my poor language, English is not my native language.)
My mom drank during my whole life and I became aware as I grew up, resulting in many problem along the years. At some point she had a bleeding in her stomach, took some medication for that (don't know exactly what) and went into a coma (as the medication went straight into her bloodstream because of the wounds in her stomach and her body (liver/kidneys ?) was not able to efficiently get it out of her bloodstream). When she got out of the coma, she lost her memory for some time and quit alcohol. After quiting alcohol she went downhill over the course of a couple of months, loosing a lot of weight and basically her body started failing. She died soon after because of her liver failing. I was already out of the house back then trying to figure out how to set up my life, and this whole episode is kind of a blur tbh. I never got to say goodbye.
My dad died more recently. After years of alcohol abuse in our teens, he quit alcohol entirely until some years prior to his death. He moved to the middle of nowhere about 15 years before that, isolating himself from the rest of the family. He was very independend and kind of a loner. No real friends or anything. We visited him from time to time. After he broke up with his girlfriend of 15+ years (he moved in the region because of her) he was incredibly lonely and unable to adapt or move somewhere else (he was already 75). He started drinking to cope I guess. By the time we found out he was already drinking a bottle of whisky a day and having tremors and shakes if he didn't drink. We dried to offer him as much support as possible but at some point we found him on the floor. He must have fallen, maybe hit his head and he passed away. we found him 2 days later. The coroner estimated natural causes, so no further exemination was done to investigate specific causes.

Alcohol is the least taboo and so easily accessible that's why. There are also ads for it everywhere in every country
I smoke a box of black & milds and drink a pint of alcohol everyday when I get off work for the past 2 years it’s killing me & I can’t stop .
You can stop. Anything you put your mind too is possible. Praying for you. 🙏🏼
Because they built a system that monetize on it. our governments would give us all the drugs we want but they still need to figure out how to get the most money out of it. This has nothing to do with morals or repercussions it's all about the money.
Exactly it pays more to have these guys in jail vs taxation
because if we didn't drink alcohol 200 years ago you died from water born disease. Its just how we have lived for a thousand years. Its not easy to give up and change as a society

When you go to a concert, who is it that wants to fight you if they bump into you, the drunk or the pot smoker?
Precisely, another example is the time police officers spend dealing with alcoholics whereas pot smokers avoid police at all costs😂. Idk where you're based or other people but in the UK alot and I mean alot of time is spent dealing with drunks over the weekends. Yet the pot heads are the ones who get hassled and belittled. Society is backwards.
I’ve been drunk at easily over 100 concerts and never wanted to fight or had a problem. Shitty comments bro.
Joseph’s Quest Just because you might not want to fight people whilst drunk doesn’t mean that every single person in the world won’t either - it’s not a shit comment, it’s a fact. Alcohol commonly increases aggression compared to other drugs such as Marijuana
Xeph so of the thousands of people I’ve ran into at concerts and never had a incident with one of them, it’s all bull shit because you say it is right?
@@Josephguestable I didn't say "everyone who drinks", some people dont get aggressive when drinking but alot of people cant control their consumption levels. Plus there not shitty comments when theres truth behind them. When you're stoned it's pretty fucking hard to start a commotion with someone and theres also information on how alcohol actually stops a specific part of your brain from functioning which is why drunks cause more problems than stoners. I'll try find the link if anyone doesn't believe it also if you think I'm having a go at you I'm not. 👍✌

Alcohol, nicotine and sugar are some of the most addictive but legal and widely accepted drugs we have. I gave up drink and cigs years ago but still struggling with sugar! There is always some crack in us where the light shines in. Well done, hope you're still off them
Quit drinking at the age 35. So happy to do it now before I pissed my health away.
I can’t smoke weed because of my job, but if I wanted to get loaded and stay up all night and go to work the next day, that’s ok
And then get fired for shitty performance lol
Which is crazy, if you mess something up at work and fail a drug test, you're fired but if you drank like a fish the night before then eh its ok.
that's so stupid don't let people inside your bodies sans airline pilots and CDL drivers - absolutely no reason people should be looking inside and judging. Judge behavior not consumption.

Lol. It's called an intraview.
It's called the Joe Rogan Experience for a reason kid
check out the episode with Brian Greene or Neil Tyson, completely opposite haha
This is a conversation. Whenever you have a conversation with your friends do you care which one of you gets to talk more? It's completely unnatural to think that way. This is why this has a MUCH different vibe than from late night television shows where they have guests and everything feels unnatural, you know, forced, mechanical, fake, sugar coated etc everything is a short answer to a short question that way.
Christ, his guest was just about to make a point - hence saying about the order of smoking/weed/drinking and Joe just goes off on a tangent for 7 minutes about HIS story 🙄
I’ve partied harder than most and the only drug to mess things up for me is/was alcohol. I quit drinking 2 years ago.
@Chris Jenkins Maybe he was the one always doing the most while partying growing up. Drinking the most, smoking the most, popping the most tabs.. maybe got addicted to something at some point or still is... I can relate...
@Jr ALEXANDER Who?
Xanax always makes those barheads want to fight at said parties
@estoban kupah lol wtf?Yeah it sucks going to bed with no weed but if you're physically addicted to the opiates, you're physically feeling the withdrawl. Weed has no physical withdrawl. That shit is all in your head.I guess the physical withdrawl from weed could be vivid dreams..
Tobacco is bad, but the chemicals they add to cigarettes make it 10x worse.
tobacco in itself is just a plant, its been used for over 5,000 years. Saying it is bad is incorrect. It is the overconsumption and those chemicals they put on it. Most cigarettes are only a percentage of tobacco the rest are fillers and additives.
@@Peace-qm2sp Not every living thing is good for you. Some plants are good some are bad
@@rayflower1915 that is a true statement my friend. But tobacco in itself is not bad. It is like saying coffee is bad. Not necessarily...depends on the context. Tobacco can actually be beneficial and healing in some cases. Im not being an advocate for it, im just pointing it out.

That's exactly my story.. I started smoking weed when I was 16, became an everyday pothead after I graduated from High School (18 years old) started off as a fun thing then became a dark nightmarish thing after like 10 years of regular use. I quit hanging around childhood friend 4 months ago for the very reason (nobody had goals or real ambition, just sit around and smoke weed all day) Today is my first day of not smoking weed (after 15 years of smoking) I'm 29 years old and I have nothing to show for in life. No car, still living with my mom, dropped out of college... I'm glad I'm finally making this decision and I know by the end of 2020 my life will be have changed for the good..
