Here’s a trick to check the cooling fans just turn on your ac on max the ac system needs the fans to run to operate correctly. The fans after 2 to 3 seconds should fire up and run. If the fans work with the ac but the car still over heats with the ac off then check relays. The fans will always kick on with the ac turned on full blast.

If everything with the engine checks good, I would check out the transmission. Automatic transmissions can cause overheating, especially when hauling heavy loads and cause the radiator to overheat.
I’m having this issue with my 06 350z I’m not sure if it’s the water pump or the heater core. My question is can a heater core cause this problem? I only over heat when in idle for too long but only when outside temp is higher than 90 degrees. But when it’s over 100 degrees, even if I’m driving it will over heat. I’ve changed the thermostat, radiator and pressure cap. No air in the system
1999 tahoe only overheat a little on first startup after being cold. Then runs normal. New thermostat. New hoses. Clutch fan engages. Good heat. Burped the system. I'm thinking coolent temp sensor but how do I test?
I have an 06 GMC Envoy Denali and it's overheating, but doesn't seem to be really hot - I suspect the Temp Sensor. The temp gauge at highway speeds will show increasing temps and it will hit the top causing a beeping sound, but then the temp goes down and there's no sign of actual overheating - just a constant up and down on the gauge.
Mine was a clogged radiator. I bought a used car and discovered that there was tap water in the cooling system. Fast forward a few months and residue built up in the cooling fins. Had to replace cooling hoses and radiator. The engine also didn't have a thermostat so I just bought a new one and installed it.
My truck starts to heat when turned on by at a stop. The temperature gauge goes up and the a/c begins to warm up but as soon as I am driving it, it cools down. What might this be?
Mine does the in town heat climb.I noticed when i turn my AC on it helps to control the temp.So what would this be, i swiched my ECT sensor twice, duralast and pigtail ,is it just too cheap of a sensor?

@HVACMECHANIC On my way home today my 2005 Mercury Mariner beeped and said "Hot Engine Temperature" I noticed the temperature guage was all the way on high, after I continued to drive a few miles just trying to get home from work all of sudden the truck just completely turned off right when I was about to make a turn leaving me stuck right in the middle of a busy street😢. I never got any warning prior to this so what do you feel the actual issue could be???By the way I did have my AC on and turned it off as soon as I noticed the temperature gauge was on high.
ive taken care of everything except the water pump and a couple of sensors......then I added some fuel type cleaner to my gas tank and that is the only thing thats made a difference so far. carbon gunk does pileup sometimes. And I dont over do anything....I use only what the directions in the fuel cleaner says to do. But there was a gunk build up on the tailpipe so I thought of the fuel cleaner.
Man, I have a beautiful 02' Blazer ZR2 4.3 w/300k on her & she used to run at 200 on hot days with a 195° thermostat. Now she's running around 210° (1/2 way mark) after driving just a few miles on hot days. Then it'll raise a tad past 210. That's never happened. The water pump is pumping. I can see it flowing when the thermostat opens. Maybe this is normal but I've never noticed it in the past. She'll get a tad higher when towing a very small 5x9' utility trailer with 200lbs in it. I'm South of Houston. I've flushed, cleaned the outside of radiator, not loosing coolant, did a flush twice in the past 2yrs & didn't look bad, got a new 195° thermostat, coolant, Severe Duty Clutch Fan & I've purged my system twice. I believe all my air is out. The new fan is odd, it is working or engaging when parked & getting warm or just after the thermostat opens, it just doesn't cool it down much or I cannot hear like I can when I'm driving but it's working. It's a new Hayden 2786. Might be normal because it runs around 200° in the mornings & holds that temp whether towing or not. It's just when it's really hot outside like 90° or higher when the temp runs hotter than normal. Which is probably just fine & me worried about nothing. She's had a ton of work done to her & runs like new. Still getting the 02' sticker mpg, 16 in town & better on highway.

So I have a unique issue with my 2015 wrangler 3.6 engine spiking to 230-240 mainly under stress at speeds anywhere from 40-75 mph. It some times will randomly do it but mostly on a slight incline. Then it will drop back down sometimes to 200-216. I am not loosing any coolant and it’s holding pressure. I put a 3 row radiator, replaced the thermostat 4 times, replaced the coolant temp sensor 3 times, replaced the water pump twice, new hoses, the fan comes on when it’s suppose to, I have recently had the head gaskets done twice as the mechanic thought that may be the issue. I am using mopar oem coolant. I had the catalytic converters tested and they are good also. I have good air flow as well. I have burped it over 100 times since June. So I don’t feel like there is air in the system but possibly could be. I’m at a loss at this point. Any advice would help tremendously
I resolved my overheating issue after checking everything else. Would have saved money and time, if I checked the bottom of the overflow reservoir for dirt which was blocking the hose to radiater.
My problem is so unique. My AC stops working. Only option to do, since all other issues are not the problem. I have replaced the thermostat several times, last time 5 months ago. I have not needed the AC, so I haven't replaced, even though the temperature gauge stops registering, but heater still works perfect, no engine over heating. I am trying to prepare for summer weather, what can it be? Is there a specific thermostat I need for a 2.2 engine? I am never asked when I buy them, which one I need. I have asked and the dealership has said only one specified. The dealers was $75 and still same problem in a few weeks. Help! Please.
My temps stay between 177 and 184 when the a/c is not on. Unfortunately when the a/c is on, I see the temps go up to 205. I have my radiator fans turned on all the time but even like this, the temps climb high with the a/c on. With the a/c on and at highway speeds, the temps will mostly drop to the mid 190’s depending on the outside temperature . I’m really hesitating on installing an oil cooler to assist because it just adds complexity.
No offense, love the video, but the coolent Reservoir you spoke of in the beginning with the high/low and was pictured dull white plastic is for overfill level, It's not your coolent level. To test the coolent level, you just fill the the radiator more and more until no more can go in. If more coolent can go into the radiator, then it's probably not full. As said later, you may have airpockets so keep on trying to fill it. Make sure it's the right kind, too.

On my old Lincoln LS the procedure to de-air was to park the car on an incline. Meaning the front of the car higher than back. Open the coolant port and run the car with heat. This causes water to circulate and air to rise and exit out. After about 5-10min close it. Then use the bleed line. Some cars have a small port you can open and it bleeds out some coolant. For what it’s worth hope it helps someone
what if the coolant is leaking then stops? pulled over cuz gauge and steam indicated overheating, waited for suv to cool off, added more coolant to get home, it didnt leak that time but under hood by coolant was gettn warm again?
The last thing could be a small amount of combustion going into the cooling system which will cause it to do those same symptoms plus make the heater go a to warm when it's on high heat.
I just changed the thermostat. Its still overheating. Temp goes down when we open the cap to water reservoir. I think he bled it right. What do i do next. I cant afford a mechanic
Mine overheated tonight. I sat for a while it cooled down fast (30 minutes) So the resevoir was okay I didn't check the radiator tho I was afraid it, would be too hot! Then I tried to drive it. Got about a mile and bam same thing only worse. And there was no power for 100 ft as I drove it the second time...so I had to call a wrecker to go home. 😢 . what about bad head gasket does that cause it. I hope I didn't ruin my engine. There was no steam. There was no smoke. And only a trickle of antifreeze near my driver front door
Can someone explain how the water pump fails. If the impeller spins how is it causing the coolant to overheat? Even if coolant is leaking out of the weep hole but the coolant level is not low what causes the overheating?
Could it be the ect sensor even if my car isn’t throwing a trouble code for it? I’ve had to replace a thermostat on my car that got stuck open and it threw a code for ect/thermostat don’t recall the exact code so wasn’t sure

I have benz E350 and it starts overheating when I turn the ac on or when I am traveling at the slow speeds or stopped completely but it stays normal on freeway even with the ac on for long distance too but if I press on gas really hard or usually traveling at slow speed it is doing that for few months now.
Currently hunting the same problem. Only overheats on the interstate 60mph+ Flushed a bunch of rust out of the radiator system. New thermostat, New water pump, new mopar coolant. Still acting up. Also coolant temp sensor changed. Gonna try the radiator cap and if that doest get it, flush again.
My radiator cap was not holding enough pressure to keep it from boiling. New cooling fans, fan relays, thermostat, drain and new coolant, serpentine belt. Stupid radiator cap was the culprit.
Humm, my 2005 F150 gauge went to hot, check gauge light came on. Changed the thermostat, and it did it again. I pulled over off, and back on, and normal temp. I slowly open the reservoir and it fills and would overfill if allowed. Looks like trying temp senor next. Any opinions are appreciated. Only work truck.
I’d like to add #8 I was having to add a large big gulp cup every day. I couldn’t find the leak for the life of me. No drips no where. I finally started ripping out the whole front end! Out of the corner of my eye I finally see a drip… the back side of the radiator cap!
Im pretty sure its the fan on mine, i noticed if the car is idling the overheating jumps up but once I drive it drastically goes back down in heat N stays cool, i added more coolant and got a oil change plus prior the radiator transmission n fuel injectors was flushed... so it has to be the fan, luckily i live in a colder state while driving, just damn... shit popped up 3 days ago
I changed radiator the coolent is not staying in the over flow when driving temperature is fling up and down when I take coolent cap off it then comes back up into reserve thank, and no heat ? What do I do ?
So I got the symptoms of a air pocket in the coolant system but when my car is idle it has a ticking sound It’s nothing to loud yet but i’m having trouble diagnosing it
What do you all think of when you have a good, well taken care of 6.4L V8 HEMI and two or three weeks ago it starts overheating but not while driving or ripping on it. Driving temp bounces from 180, 190-ish to 210-ish, after 210-220 ish the fan will kick on and the temp will go back down. But as of two or three weeks ago she started overheating while at idle and it happens maybe 3 to 5 minutes of idling (like waiting to pick up my kids from school and have to sit in that line for a bit) and will shoot up to the gauges max of 265! Then she starts beeping and yelling at me. But once I start moving again the temp quickly drops back down to normal. What is causing this? My thought was thermostat or water pump? But I won't know that until I can start taking stuff apart, which I don't want to do if I don't have to. But I could be wrong, which is fine. So, if anyone can help point me in the right direction as to why I'm having this issue I would really appreciate it. BTW: I have a 2018 Dodge Durango SRT with some mods but nothing recently and nothing that would affect the coolant system.
I’m through the same thing, at idle my temp gauge goes up but when I start to drive it goes back to normal. Did u ever figure out what the issue is? I have an Acura rsx.
@@derekninkovich3728 I did get it figured out. After all the checks I knew how to do, it turned out that I had a small crack in my radiator and leaked enough coolant to be too low to maintain temp but not low enough to throw a code. The mechanic I always go to thought it was the thermostat (like I thought) then thought it could have been a blown head gasket but luckily it was the radiator. He replaced the radiator and the thermostat just to be safe and now she's running fine. I know they are two totally different engines, but I hope this helps you figure out your problem.

FINALLY an actually helpful video! Thank you
My truck starts to heat when turned on by at a stop. The temperature gauge goes up and the a/c begins to warm up but as soon as I am driving it, it cools down. What might this be?
Is your fan working, might blow/ spray out your radiator.
Mine does the in town heat climb.I noticed when i turn my AC on it helps to control the temp.So what would this be, i swiched my ECT sensor twice, duralast and pigtail ,is it just too cheap of a sensor?
I have a Chevy Colorado 2015 I’ve changed the thermostat. I’ve changed the radiator and it continues to overheat. I have to turn the heater on to cool it down. What do you think the problem could be

your great bud thank you for solutions so clear cut and to point no bull again so appreciate you

with this intermittent heat problem... Can you now rule out a blown HEAD GASKET ?
If it is winter and freezing outside and you don’t have antifreeze or to much water mixed it will freeze in the block and over heat
I have the same problem
@@RICK32717same but mine revs higher like it's struggling any advice on what to look for or what it might be same 02 blazer
@@dblocksta92
Mine does the same, did you find the problem?
@@SkittleEagle bit the bullet bought a new suv off the lot and sold my blazer it still ran like a champ though just didn't want to risk putting anymore into it if something did happen
Mechanics have been known to place thermostats in place upside down . Cylinder head gaskets that fail may cause these symptoms .
Can they do your wiring?? Mine does this, changed the switch but still the temp indicator goes to the red and back to normal
What about if your gauge goes to 3/4 after about 4 miles with the A/C on at 95 degrees or higher but is fine with the A/C off?
Great summary
Thanks for posting very helpful.
Idk about that cause your just adding water into the cylinders heads if you have a bad head gasket
it dep's on if have
A. an e4xpansion tank (twist on cap)
B. a overflow tank (flap cap/ open to atmosphere)
@@josediazasmr6014 wud only get bit water in a cylinder mainly wen cold shut off as once started may run rough clearing up once at runing temp as long as water topped up & not boiling due to low level = air/ air lock pockets = overheat. if do stop shit leak bypass heater core & entire rad if u have ability/ if not remove thermostat run till hot allow sufficient cool time reassemble. ☆JoeDog&K-9'sBuddie☆
Actually on most cares that’s part of the cooling system and it’s pressurized. Good way to tell is if the cap reads don’t open when hot that overflow is part of the system. If the cap on the bottle has no warnings on it it’s just an expansion tank.
@@joeyallcock1011 That was the toughest thing in the world to read and make heads or tails out of.
What about radiator cap can that also cause it to over heat?
My car stay in the middle cold and hot but as soon as I start to drive it it starts to over heat any suggestions u might have I would appreciate it
Sound like you need to put a block of ice on yo shit 😂😂😂😂
What is that jug called exactly? To air out the system?
I have a toyota yaris 2008, facing problem of overheating when on high speed like over 80kmh and when vehicle running for long time already changed radiator and water pump, still same issue, can u enlighten me with the reason please।
I have a 06 Cayenne 3.2L v6, only starts to overheat when I go 75mph+ and it’ll go away when I slow down. But coolant reservoir blew up on me on the highway. So I replaced that. Not sure what could cause the overheating at high speeds
Thanks That was a big help
On my old Lincoln LS the procedure to de-air was to park the car on an incline. Meaning the front of the car higher than back. Open the coolant port and run the car with heat. This causes water to circulate and air to rise and exit out. After about 5-10min close it. Then use the bleed line. Some cars have a small port you can open and it bleeds out some coolant. For what it’s worth hope it helps someone
Great video! Very informative. Thank you.
They told me it's might be the wiring.. Do you think they should touch the wiring??
so my moms car always overheats when going uphill but then the temps shoots down when going level or downhill. Is this a sign of a bad coolant pump?
what if the coolant is leaking then stops? pulled over cuz gauge and steam indicated overheating, waited for suv to cool off, added more coolant to get home, it didnt leak that time but under hood by coolant was gettn warm again?
The last thing could be a small amount of combustion going into the cooling system which will cause it to do those same symptoms plus make the heater go a to warm when it's on high heat.
Great video
Easy to understand. Thanks heaps
Thanks for your tips! I've tried everything!!
did it work for you??
Hello , I’m not getting any faults on the diagnostic reading but my temperature gauge is going high .
The best video! Thank you
Could it be the ect sensor even if my car isn’t throwing a trouble code for it? I’ve had to replace a thermostat on my car that got stuck open and it threw a code for ect/thermostat don’t recall the exact code so wasn’t sure
I'm not sure if the radiator fan turns on while the car is running but it turns on after the car is off, I changed my thermostat, temperature sensor and now I'm going to flush out the coolant, I don't know much about cars 😂😂 but I'm having fun learning if you could please give me some idea's I would greatly appreciate it 😅😅😂
What about a radiator cap failing?
Then get a new cap it’s a simple fix
I have benz E350 and it starts overheating when I turn the ac on or when I am traveling at the slow speeds or stopped completely but it stays normal on freeway even with the ac on for long distance too but if I press on gas really hard or usually traveling at slow speed it is doing that for few months now.

I have a jeep grand Cherokee 2015 3.6 my temperature rises when I step on the gas. Do you know what it can be?
Currently hunting the same problem. Only overheats on the interstate 60mph+
Flushed a bunch of rust out of the radiator system. New thermostat, New water pump, new mopar coolant. Still acting up. Also coolant temp sensor changed.
Gonna try the radiator cap and if that doest get it, flush again.
any luck i have 2015 3.6 as well. mines only overheats after a cold start and 10 mins of driving@@sk8ter202
Quality video!! New follower
My radiator cap was not holding enough pressure to keep it from boiling. New cooling fans, fan relays, thermostat, drain and new coolant, serpentine belt. Stupid radiator cap was the culprit.
Thank you for this🙌🏻
Thank you!!
Radiator cap
This helped greatly Thanks!!
I’d like to add #8 I was having to add a large big gulp cup every day. I couldn’t find the leak for the life of me. No drips no where. I finally started ripping out the whole front end! Out of the corner of my eye I finally see a drip… the back side of the radiator cap!

My car overheats only when I’m like in a long drive through, am parked with engine on. Do y’all think it’s the engine fan? Hyundai sonata 2013
Super valuable video
Im pretty sure its the fan on mine, i noticed if the car is idling the overheating jumps up but once I drive it drastically goes back down in heat N stays cool, i added more coolant and got a oil change plus prior the radiator transmission n fuel injectors was flushed... so it has to be the fan, luckily i live in a colder state while driving, just damn... shit popped up 3 days ago
Great vid
clear explanation !! thank you !!
I changed radiator the coolent is not staying in the over flow when driving temperature is fling up and down when I take coolent cap off it then comes back up into reserve thank, and no heat ? What do I do ?
I have a Nissan Almera. The temperature indicator goes on to red even after changing the cooling...
Or leaking in-between cylinders , and giving no blown head gasket external symptoms.
It would stay hot if head gaskets read mate
@@kirra8787 not by air leaking into each cylinder.
After changing all the parts mentioned on my 16’ sequoia, I’m at a loss. Still overheating.
My engine overheats while climing hills ŵith or without AC but the gage go down as we go down hill.
