A late friend of mine ran the Cheshire model shop in Macclesfield, she stopped stocking Airfix for the simple reason,Airfix refused to supply her shop single figure number of kits, Cheshire models was just a back street shop, and Airfix stated, unless you take a minimum of 2 cases of 12 kits,we won't honour your orders.Italeri,Tamiya, and revell were happy to stock her shop, but NOT AIRFIX.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab its only a matter of time until airfix go belly up again.....not only because Hornby are going to sell off its subsidiries in order to save themselves but also Airfix own stupid decisions
A new Halifax, would surely sell. I know a lot of people including myself would love to see a Stirling. Allegedly, Airfix won't tool anything for which there are no drawings, however we in the Stirling Aircraft Project have the Type record for the Mk1 and MkIII, which would be a perfect basis for a model
1/48 Lysander is the new release...what a joke and disappointment.....i don't know anyone who was asking for this.once again airfix didn't listen and failed to deliver@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab
I do love a Peter Oxley rant! Highly entertaining but informative - i will settle in my armchair with a nice mug of darjeeling and a custard slice and enjoy the show!
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab what do you think of the announcement from Airfix yesterday about the 1/72 Bristol Superfreighter being a vintage classic for next year?
Quite right, the target audience is no longer teenagers. I teach in a large secondary school, and there is almost no interest shown in model kits. Attendees at a model show I organize each year are 40 plus age group, almost all men. They buy kits for the stash as well as for building. Half the kits I buy are simply to gratify the conumer/collector in me. Every now and again, I'll make one.
A few months ago my 13 year old son came downstairs from his PlayStation and asked me if I had an A-10 warthog my collection. He had been playing a game that featured one. I had a 1/72 in the stash, and he built it. Games like Call of Duty are free advertising for model companies. Maybe that's the way to go.
Well, lets be honest. I did modelling until I was allowed to go to the pub and have a pint. Now I'm almost retired and picking up where I left it. So when starting to live on yourself, having children, sailing (I sailed for 35 years) , maintaining the house in between, having holidays, sports, etc. doesn't reward you with time left doing this hobby.
Good subject Peter. I have to add my vote for a 1/48 SEPECAT Jaguar…. It’s a no brainier. I also think Airfix could help themselves by re-realising the 1/48 Sea Vixen and Westland Merlin HC.3 both kits very hard to find these days. I have also requested that Airfix revisit the 1/48 English Electric Lightning and Canberra. Both could do with an updated tooling in my opinion. In addition I would also say we have a gapping hole for a 1/72 Hadley Page Halifax. All we have is the 1960’s tooled Airfix kit. The Matchbox kit also reboxed by Revell and Revell’s own recently tooled kits which are also currently very hard to find. Also I’m confused why Tamiya have not followed up on the 1/48 F-4B Phantom…. Still no C, D version..?? And again why have the 32nd releases dried up..?? They could carry on with the P-47, 109,190, Ki-61 Hein, Hurricane, Typhoon. Enjoy your content Peter. Keep up the good work and enjoy Telford.
I agree with your selection but there is more room for some 1/32 Spits. Some PR versions perhaps, MkVc and, for me, a late Mk1. A Griffon Spit would also be good.
The other day i picked up a mint in box Airfix 1/72 Panavia M.R.C.A......the Tornado before it was the Tornado.....when was the last time you saw a Tornado on a model shop shelf?
Theres a massive amount of Veterans out here who are avid model makers. There is a big gap in the market for 1/35 Cold war Vehicles and armour such a the good old Stally, Abbot SPG, CVRT series, Saracen, Humber Pig and the good old FFR land rover. If we want these we have to pay over the odds for resin examples.
I’ve been asking for 1/48 Jaguar & Lightning for ages. Also in 1/350 there’s a huge gap in RN ships, Type 21, 22. Even the new Queen Elizabeth or the 1960/70’s Ark/Eagle. All I think would sell well.
Loved the Buccaneers, we shouted and they listened…. I’m with you on the Gannet…. A strange decision. A 1/48 Tornado would sell like hotcakes….. all across the world. The revell one is painful and everyone knows it.
Loved the video Peter. Here's my list for 1/48 scale kits. Airfix: Jaguar, Phantom FG and FGR, Eurofighter, EE Lightning new tool. Eduard: New tooled FW-190D and Bf-110, F-4U Corsair family, Stuka (they announced last year they are working on one!) Revell: Gripen, swept wing F-84 and RF-84 Tamiya: F-111, F/A-18 (legacy hornet), new tooled state of the art F-15, Korean war F-9F and AD-4 Skyraider rebox of their A-1 ICM/Arma: Mig-23 and Su-17/22. Poland and Ukraine flew them. Plenty of them on display and the Trumpeter kit is not good! Heller (they are back in business): Mirage III family, Mirage 2000 and Rafale. Modelsvit are coming out with a Mirage IV in 2025 which is amazing. Always wanted one
I agree with every suggestion. All gaps in the market.. another HUGE gap is a new tool plastic injection 1/350 ■ Royal Navy WW2 A to I class Destroyer/ and JKN class ( hull and Superstructure can be used for War Emergency class Destroyer
as someone who came back to modelling 7-8 years ago i was struck by how many spits, 109s, lancs and wellingtons there are. need a really, really good ee lightning, a tempest a harrier some good migs and yaks. really need to diversify.
And if any aftermarket companies are listening: pre-painted pilots, for the artistically challenged ones like me who have a real problem with making them look half-human.
The bigger kit makers should be targeting people in their 40s and 50s who left the hobby when they went to Uni and want to get back into a creative hobby, bringing their kids along with them. I am one such person.
My problem with Airfix is " allegedly" their shoddy quality control. 3 out of the 9 kits I purchased this year, from them, had short shot or sink mark issues. 33% fail rate is very sloppy!
Ok, Peter I see your point on model shops. Hobby shops are few and far between in The western half of Kansas. Hobby Lobby used to sell airfix, but not anymore. Now, for myself and the isolated hobbyist who must buy online or not get anything at all, I have to pay shipping on top of the price of a kit. I hope all of you realize that I have a limited income and it's not good that amazon is screwing up every delivery that they make. Kansas is a huge state , 300 miles wide and 400 miles long. Imagine having to live in a rural area and having to travel great distances for decent hobby supplies. Now, I thank you for your channel and great help.
Some more recommendations: Tamiya: 1/32 FW190 D ICM: 1/32 CH 53 Super Stallion RFM: 1/35 PzH 2000 with Interior And for all companies: Fire Fighter Vehicles...that can be a big market.
Watched your video again. Here is my list of kits: Airfix 1/24: F6F (reissue), F4U (with provisions for all variants) Revell 1/72: B-21 ICM 1/48: Bell P-63 King Cobra Tamiya 1/32: They have the base core of tools they made for the -1A and -1D. So to update for -4, -5 , AU-1, -7 would be an effective use of the base tools to make).
Scimitar has most likely very limited interest outside of UK, same with Sea Venom, would be really surprising if Airfix would decide to make a new kit of those.
@@MakkaravuoriThe Sea Venom was also used by Australia and France. The Venom by even more countries. I am from New Zealand and I would live a Scimitar. You can't easily catagorise which countries would be interested in a kit.
1/48 jaguar, tornado, typhoon, puma, Westland whirlwind, scout/wasp and wildcat (helicopters), gazelle, Harvard, sea venom, supermarine scimitar.. I made the Revell tornado and typhoon earlier this year and my word do we need a new mould of them! And I made the kitty hawk jaguar… Definitely need new ones please Airfix!
Enjoyed your rant.My main issue with it is this , regarding the notion that Airfix concentrate on selling to model shops rather than selling directly to customers. Who would they supply ? I don’t know about England, but here in Scotland I can count the number of traditional model shops I am aware of on the fingers of one hand and that is in the whole of the country not just where I live. At one time there was at least one model shop in every big town and in some of the smaller ones as well. But the rot set in ,in 2001 when Beatties hit the buffers. Over time since then the majority have closed down for economic reasons or redevelopment issues. As for buying kits on line, I hadn’t bought any Airfix kits for a number of years until September this year, probably all the Airfix kits I have bought this year have come in for criticism from the “Rivet Counters” but I am happy with what I have bought and the price I paid for them. That doesn’t mean there are not reasons to be concerned about where Airfix is headed. If you look at their website and the number of kits that are listed but are out of stock and have been out of stock for sometime and how old some of kits that they have available ,it does suggest that there are problems. As for new kits virtually all their current range of German WWII aircraft in 1/72 and 1/48 scale are past their use by date. Regarding kits I would like to see a Westland Wyvern and a Supermarine Spiteful or Seafang in 1/48. A Republic Thunderbolt P-47 in any scale, a P-39 Airacobra in any scale. Moving on to wishful thinking a Messerschmitt Bf 110 and a Westland Whirlwind fighter in 1/48 scale would be welcome.
@@ericbeaton7211 Sadly this direct selling route plus just a couple of very large direct retailers will just hasten the end for local model shops...I wasn't kidding, 2 closed the same week in the south west, it's a real shame.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab That is a real shame. In the day I enjoyed visiting model shops every opportunity that I got. I am retired, but when I was working I travelled a fair bit and if I had some spare time where ever I was I would look for the local model shop.At one time there was six shops within a twelve mile radius of where I live, now they are all gone.Wonderland Models in Edinburgh are still on the go, and there are a couple of others at the other side of the city. There is a Hobbycraft in Glasgow but I haven't been in there since I retired and the last time I visited, their entire stock of plastic kits appeared to be a dosen assorted kits sitting on the end of a shelf gathering dust. Andy, who has the Novice Modelling and the Midlife Crisis channel perhaps summed up part of the reason for the demise of the model shop, when he explained how one day at work a younger colleague had asked him what he was doing at the weekend, Andy replied saying he was building a Spitfire, to which his work colleague replied "What is a Spitfire". Unfortunately we live in a society different from the one we grew up in with different values and different interests.
Definitely Airfix have not really been reading the room. it also applies to Hornby as well. If ICM can come up with very imaginative ideas then I am sure Airfix can if they try. Good list of models worthy of release, I will add a Fairey Battle and an Avro Manchester to the mix!
I must say although I haven't built any of their kits yet, iCM is a very impressive company in terms of the subjects they produce and the level of detail.
I want- 1/48 Kingfisher float plane! New 48th B58 & 72 B36 would be awesome😊 And- 1/48 seated pilot figure & 'in flight' US bomber crew sets for in flight builds!
I'm a niche modeler, I reckon most are the same to one degree or another. My niche happens to be the 1950s. Mikr Mir produced an XB-51, so maybe miracles do happen. But would it be much of a stretch to do a Martin P4M-2Q Mercator as their next miracle? For my money, if Airfix might contemplate updating molds, their F4D Skyray and F-86D Dog Sabre would be a good start. I'd be in crowd ready grab a Scimitar, should they ever go there. Or an F-80 and T-33. Or an F-100? How did Trumpeter manage to flog that kit? Working with kits nearly as old as I am is okay with me, but some of them are getting kinda scarce. Roden made a very nice AJ-1 but, if you want an AJ-2 or-2P, you're gonna have to find a Rare Planes vacuform kit. Speaking of ancient, and speaking Rare Planes, how about a YB-17 or a C-121 Constellation? For a decent Connie, you to cough a small fortune the horrible Heller kit and a ton of aftermarket correction stuff. For y'all on the other side of the pond, new tool Swifts, Javelins and Hunters wouldn't be bad idea either...
Here is the Most obvous win for Airfix and over the last 5 years I have repeatedly told them. HMS Warrior. never done in plastic, 100s of thousands of visitors every year, Victorian warships a huge gap in the ship model market. The actual ship is on there dorestep. AIRFIX JUST DO IT!!!!!!! HMS Victory, one of there best selling kits of all time, tooling is worn out. re tool slightly biger scale with the new learnings on the trafalgar Victory. its so obvous!!!!! they can even do two version one with original open stern gallery and greater deceration as launched. AIRFIX JUST DO IT!!!!
On Facebook I'm constantly asking for a 1/48 Royal Navy f4 phantom and it seems like many others are asking for the same thing. Thanks for the video Peter, I found it very interesting and entertaining.
Another great episode Peter. No one else is talking about this, it needs to be brought up. Thank you. I really liked the idea of future what could have been aircraft from the Luftwaffe had the war lasted a couple more years and in scales bigger than 1/72. They could do it justice and take a little creative liberties, they have plenty of design records from German designers that never made it to production. And the recent trend of leaving out pilot and crew figures?
@ I just purchased a 1/48 Hazegawa A-4M Skyhawk. Not a new kit but a perfect example of what we are talking about. Relatively inexpensive at around $39 Lol but after looking at after market pilot figures the cheapest option for a pilot figure was around $16, the one I want around $20 which for a tiny piece of plastic is half the price of the entire kit!
I would just be happy if all aircraft kits casme with a stand like they used to, so you can display wheels up.Surely that isn't too expensive or difficult to do.
A long but a very necessary speech, thanks a lot Pete.. From the Finnish perspective, the following should be done: 1:48 Brewster 239, Morane 460, JU88 A-4 1/72 a decent and updated version. MIG-21-F13 .Gnat F1 in 1:48, VL Myrsky in 1:48, Blenheim 1:48 Longnose From the Global perspective: the early Mustangs in 1.48 with Allison engines, Whirlwind in both scales, FIAT G50, F-84G Thunderjet, Jaguar, Mirage etc The Hobby Boss Easy Assembly kits in 1:72 are cheap and have a good range of WW2 kits, but extending it to the Cold War is also a great idea, those easy build kits are an easy way to build fast and If painted carefully they look just great (at least for my eyes) If possible, Airfix should do those as well to introduce people back to this hobby. The price of the models are high, because they contain to many parts and complicated build phases. That is also a major issue for the industry, to make profits. Tamiya has released their old models at cheap prices and the are just fine for a re-entry to this marvelous hobby. The quality of the older kits are just fine,
@@johngreen-sk4yk My problem is there are other subjects in much greater demand & will sell better for much longer, that people have been requesting for years.
@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab As an armour modeller, I appreciate airfix doing a piece of Cold War British armour. It makes a change from kit manufacturers pumping out endless variants of Tiger 1 or spitfire ! I think Airfix would do well trying the old matchbox trick of having small diarama bases with their vehicles & stands/aircrew with their aircraft kits
For Revell's older kits, here's an idea: Instead of 'Vintage Classic' as Airfix use, how about a logo in the Indiana Jones style with "Ancient Relic" on it? 🤣
I just wish Wingnut Wings would return or another company buy up the molds. I came back to modelling eight years ago but only discovered I love building WW1 aircraft a year ago. Lots of 1/72 and 1/48 which I like but I would love to have some of the bigger scale aircraft.
I love the rants. . . . . . But, Peter you do go round the houses. 35 mins in before recommendations. Being 63 I am in the age range, but can you be more concise as my attention span relates to my age too 😂
1/48 Sepecat Jaguar and 1/24 BAE Hawk would be my suggestions to Airfix. But to be honest I just think they have just run out of money and can’t get sign off for new stuff. Maybe we’ve got to get used to a world where there are less new tool kits? Unless you are in a war zone!
Small producers are delivering (even if the ease of build isnt always as good as I’d like). Im currently building the 1/32 Special Hobby Westland Whirlwind. Its a bit simple and fit isnt always the best, but its coming together as an excellent kit. There Tempest models (which they also made for Eduard) are also excellent
We we desperately need a new variety of aircraft. I said it over many times on different channels. General aviation has some of the prettiest airplanes ever designed beautiful angles. They would be absolutely awesome in one48 1/32 scale made by top line manufacturers.
More good quality GA designs would be a breath of fresh air. I have an ancient Airfix HP 42 and a Rotodyne - crude kits, but astounding aircraft. It's been nice to see some new things like the recent Junkers J13 kits, but so rare. There is much more variety in the simple short run kit market, easy to see why, but there it is.
It's really odd that manufacturers don't take on board what their 'loyal' customer base recommend. I'd like Airfix 1/72 TSR2 (new tooling)& Westland Whirlwind, BAC 1-11 & various new motorcycle models from Tamiya (or others), e.g. classic Kawasaki H2 & new motocross bikes & riders.
On the topic of Model shops going out of business through lack of support. I’m guilty of using Amazon for 90% of my kits, because of the next day delivery, if you’re a prime member+ free delivery. The other 10% I purchase from model shop websites. Usually Wonderland of Edinburgh, yes they’re not the cheapest, but they deliver with in 2/3 days. And they are extremely well packaged. Can’t say that about Amazon. The packaging quality can be very erratic. For example. I’ve just took delivery of the Airfix Cromwell MK VI 1/35 scale from Amazon. It arrived without any packaging, the address label stuck on the front of the box partly covering the artwork and the box taped shut with the ubiquitous Amazon tape. 😮
Both Hornby & Airfix are household names. Mention scale models to anyone and you usually get the reply “Airfix” model train sets “Hornby”. You would think they would realise their customer base has altered from teenagers to adults. The former being more into video games than building a model kit from an era they’ve no interest in.
I think sime good subjects would be the following: Airfix - 1/48 new tool Canberra, EE Lightning and also a 1/48 Phantom FGR 2. Zoukei Mura - 1/32 Arado Ar234 and Messerschmitt Me262A Tamiya need to come back to 1/32 with a Hawker Hurricane Mk 1 or even a Stuka.
I just want all my planes and ground vehicles to have pilots and driver figures. I hate getting a plane and wanting it to fly but not having any crew in it. And if I am building an armored vehicle or a truck like say a cckw I like to make it look like it is going somewhere but trucks don’t drive themselves. And the worst thing is when the box art shows a person on the vehicle and then not having any in the box. I would love to see someone make some modern agricultural machinery in kit form. And I know this is propably not a thing that will sell the best. But 1/35 mowag piranha 3c and h. And the piranha 5 as well. an M7b priest. An m4 grizzly, FFG wisent 1 and 2 arv and aev variants The danish m113g with the added on armor and the extended g4 version with the new rubber band tracks instead of the original steel ones and have both danish an Ukrainian markings. And lastly I want to see the companies succeed and our hobby continue. I’m only 24 years old and I still want to have this hobby in 20-30 years if possible
What I've learned from my livestreams online, is that there is most definitely a teenage market for model kits. They just don't go to model shows as they don't find them engaging. Models are manufactured abs sold based on market research, rights to produce replicas, abs price point. There's lots of things to consider. I'd love a new 1/48 jaguar or tornado, but i was much jasper to see a really good sea king. Equally, I've much rather someone produce a newly tooled 1/24 or 1/12 ford Sierra cosworth rs 500
What I would like to see from airfix in 1/24 new tooled Hurricane and how about a Jet Provost in 1/24 scale. Maybe 1 x 1/24 kit release each year . In 1/48 British Phantom. 1/48 Jet Provost ...
I always thought that Tamiya would follow their 1/48 P-38 and convert it to 1/32. Seems logical and most definitely there is a market for it. Their line of 32nd scale is phenomenal and I would expect P-38 to be nothing less than that.
Hi Peter, I thought maybe my advice might be of some use considering I am 18 making me a better candidate for the future of these companies. I was the first to message airfix back in 2020 regarding their building a Jaguar when they made an Instagram post regarding what kits people would like to be released. Since then every year I have still commented without a reply which has been a disappointment. I would like to see them do a 1:48 Westland Lysander as the Eduard/Gavia kit is pants and I think it would fit their product range really nicely. I would also like them to do a Martin Baker MB.5 however I would not expect this one to be made as it seems to niche for their range and can see it flopping within the first year. I completely agree about either ICM or Eduard making a new Bf-110 as that is needed. I would not say I am a bad modeller however I do not want to have to fight a kit to put it together, I would prefer a kit to have less detail but fit well and look like the subject than it be super detailed and not fit. I find the Gannet a hard kit to talk about because on one hand it looks really good but on the other hand I do not have any interest in the aircraft nor the time period so why would I buy it 🤔.
Fokker DXXI, served as opponent to the ME109 in Holland and Denmark. Used in the Russo- Finnish war by Finland. The AVRO Shackleton? But what about the good old warships line? Type 21? Type 22? Type 42? Make a complete Falklands line! So many models left in a corner...How about the Nimrod?
Speaking as a railway modeller its interesting that the same complaints we have about Hornby are shared by Airfix fans too. Bad management and not listening to there customers seems to be obvious to all but them.
Great video Peter. I'm in the USA. I've only built one Airfix model, their snap Jeep Gladiator. I painted it and made custom decals for it. I thought it was a good kit and plan on building another one. I also have their newer DB5. I build primarily cars and scifi models which are not really Airfix's strong suit. I would like to build some of their 1/24 scale plane kits - even though most of the molds are older. I agree with the kits you suggested about Tamiya - good picks. Revell makes so much money off Monogram's older molds - especially their 1/24 car kits and the 1/48 planes like the B24 - B25 -B17 - B29 etc. Since I rarely build an aircraft model it's difficult for me to comment on Airfix. Although I think of them as a model company that specializes in aircraft kits.
I know you are off Spitfires BUT - a 1:24 scale Griffon engined MKXIV Spitfire from Airfix would be awesome!! They do a cracking 1:48 scale one, really nice bubble cockpit variant (like to see the earlier high-back too please) but nobody does a large scale MKXIV!!!
They have changed the formula of their Humbol enamel paints,I fancied building a plane last month and had to chuck five tins away, none of them were older than two years old and I dread to check the rest but I have tins which are ten years old and still good
I just finished the Revell reboxed ICM 1/32 Gloster Gladiator. Beautiful easy build (well until the rigging lol). I'll build more but ICM doesn't have much variety in 1/32 lineup. They love prop planes, and helicopters, but their entire lineup lacks jets. Their cost effective quality/detail is there, they just need the variety of subject matter in all popular scales. Oooooooo a 1/32 Canberra line up to kick off the jet age at ICM.
I can remember around the year 2000 someone from Airfix phoned me up and asked if I was interested in models of Olympic stars.. I said nope, I only do planes really. I’ve no idea how successful their footballers were but at least they marketed the idea of Olympic figures first to gauge interest..which I guess there was little!
1/32 EE Lightning from airfix for sure, tamiya need to do a 109-G in 32 scale, yes i know ZM have done, but there kits aren't for everyone. In agreeance with 1/24 hurricane. I really agree with Peter though when i think back to the last 5 kits ive boughts and built there is nothing that has been release in the last 6 years that has peaked my interest. 1/200 Scharnhorst 1/32 Mosquito 1/350 Fuso 1/48 Mig 29 GWH 1/35 jagdpanzer iv L/70a The last airfix kits that remotely interested me were the V-bombers which i brought and built. Id love to know of a new 1:144 dehavilland comet would sell from airfix. Obviously, the old tool still does as they have rereleased it 10-11 times over the years
Totally agree about Tamiya 1/32 real seen massive amounts of action German aircraft so not just a Gustav but ANY 1/32 Luftwaffe plane - ANY because they are better than any thing out there. I think Tamiya have been paid off to stay away from 1/32 German aircraft
Interesting stuff. Hs129, i made the hasegawa one a while ago, thats a nice kit and can be bought for a very reasonable price. Kits i'd like to see- 1/35 Stalwart 1/35 Bedford MJ 1/35 one ton Land Rover with 105 light gun 1/24 Jaguar F-Type 1/72 Tornado GR1/4 & F2/3
Hi Peter, you have some interesting ideas for aircraft model kits in both 1/48 and 1/32 scales. Perhaps a more up to date version of the 1/48 TSR-2 with more detailed avionics/engines and more detailed harrier aircraft of all marks. Most modellers will agree that the hobby is crying out for some decent 1/48 Sepecat Jaguar kits of all the versions. Kittyhawk manufactured a couple of reasonable Jaguar GR1 and GR3 models in 1/48 scale. They are no longer available but can be bought at some extortionate prices second hand. I have a few ex Royal Navy friends who would like to see a 1/350 HMS Ark Royal from 1970-1978 era and 1/350 HMS Hermes 1982 Falklands War. However no one apart from 3D printed manufacturers have tackled these two ships. The 3D printed ships lack the finesse of injection moulded kits. I would be bold enough to forecast these two ships would become best sellers. As you have kindly pointed out Peter, the manufacturers need to carry out some market research with modellers and listen to suggestions for new kits to make. Airfix are about to release a 1/48 Westland Sea king HC.4 in the near future and I am sure it will be as good as the last one. There are so many subjects across Aircraft, Ships, Armoured Fighting Vehicles and Automotive Vehicles which would be in great demand. I hope the boffins at Airfix, Revell, Kinetic, Tamiya et al will listen to people like yourself and modellers for new subjects to manufacture. Unfortunately the closing of model shops on the high street is becoming more common. The gentleman who ran one of the Southwest model shops which recently closed was a very helpful and enthusiastic modeller. He was willing to advise and encourage modellers of all ages. I purchased numerous kits from him and tend to buy from model shops using mail order. Please will all modellers support the model industry locally and by mail order. Another fine discussion about the hobby. Keep up the good work Peter.
Large scale Comet 1 would be nice, but yes I think a bit niche, maybe a Westland Puma not seen one for awhile and Wessex would be welcome too. Im still struggling through my tank which has stagnated but on the subject some bare bones basic aircraft kits that give you the option to buy upgrades to keep cost at a minimum. The cost of doing models nowadays has become almost prohibitive.
Airfix should do a 1:72 PBY Catalina. No one else makes a decent one and how good would it look in a Coastal Command scheme!! Tamiya should do a 1:32 Grumman Bearcat or possibly even a Tigercat (can’t remember ever seeing a good one of them for sale). Both would be unusual, perhaps a bit niche, but I’m a particular fan of planes that represent the pinnacle of piston engine fighter design.
Interesting perspective. Have to disagree on a few things though - you (and I) might not like the Gannet much, but in my model club there's been a lot of takers, and more people holding out for a hoped-for RAN decal version. Can't fault Airfix's Bulldog release either - pre-WW2 fighters are pretty much an open market right now and I think Airfix was right to release that kit. Hopefully a Hawker Fury in 48th is next. As for Tamiya's F-35 trio - it's set to be one of the most common frontline fighters over the next couple of decades, and will appeal more to younger modelers, so I wouldn't be better against Tamiya on that one. I will agree with you on the 24th Hawker Hurricane though. I think Airfix should consider a re-tool of that kit, along with the 24th Mustang. Also, my bet is on Airfix coming through with a 48th scale Jaguar, along with a 72nd Stirling. And both will sell well.
The Hornby TV series told you all you needed to know about why they are not successful. Excellent designers with a passion for the subject but a largely amateur and inexperienced management team. You're right Peter about Airfix's choices - even back with their last Canberra releases, there are dozens more different releases they could have made over a 5-10 year period to appeal to a very wide audience. And how many times do people have to shout Jaguar before they listen. Airfix should be the go to manufacturer for modern RAF subjects.
Ok, some interesting aircraft (in 72nd). Airfix, Fairey Firefly, Sea Fury (Trumpeter did one in 72nd, but not bought as I have heard they're hit and miss with accuracy), Sea Venom, Gannet (scaled down to 72nd, I would buy), Grumman S-2E/G Tracker (Hasegawa is ancient, raised details, minimal detail, I want to see a fresh one, and one that can be done in RAN Scheme), a Sycomour Chopper (used on HMAS Melbourne), plus the Sikorsky Chopper, equivalant to Dragonfly, plus, an E & TA-4G variants of the Skyhawk. Also a Mk.V 1A kit (Centurion tank).
The SEPECAT Jaguar would be nice. Would be great in 72nd (as well as 48th). More a 72nd builder here. Maybe a new tooled Mig-29 (9-12), early one. Would be great to have an accurate one. A few other Mig's (19, 21, 23 Series).
Here's a few for you that I have always wanted but are never going to happen: Martin Baker MB 5, possibly the coolest fighter ever designed, never went into production; Shorts SC.1 vertical take-off experimental jet, one of the cutest jet designs ever; Martin-Marietta X-24 lifting body, experimental re-entry design for a never used space vehicle (boring capsules were the quicker, less imaginative way to and from space, boo!); Diamond DA 42 twin light recreation plane, modern and cool as heck (a tiddley little 1:72 scale effort is available from A-Model but it takes a lot of work to get it right, crying out for a top manufacturer to have a go in a decent scale); A really good version of the Douglas DC 9/MD 80 series of jets, one of the neatest designs to come out of the sixties/seventies and a s£@t ton of liveries to keep sales going forever!!! Thanks for the thought-provoking semi-rant. I will be interested to see what other projects people would like to see to keep our beloved hobby afloat, cheers. (By the way, I am a 59 year old modeller building since I was around six years old, right in your suggested demographic)
Really agree about the 1/24 Hurricane for Airfix Peter! I built the Trumpeter 1/24 MKIIc and it was absolutely excellent - full interior and engine detail - the Chinese are actually outdoing Airfix and Revell now in my opinion when it comes to value for money, subjects etc.... Another great video Peter - thanks!! 😀
Not a rant, some fair points. This month tamiya have a near 50yr old celica race car on TMM. Even the builder admits its old and lacks detail. Why? They could easily retool many of the older race cars and sell tons to the 30-60yr old market.
At the Telford when Airfix announced the 1/24 Hellcat, they were filming for the "Hornby Model World Show", and they did a vox-pops and asked some people "what are you hoping to see" just before the big announcement to build up tension. *Nobody* said "I want to see a 1/24 Hellcat...." Everybody asked said the _exact_ _same_ _thing_ (I know, I was one of the guys asked who appeared in the broadcast show!), and we all said "I want to see a new Vulcan". The next year the big announcement was.... wait for it.... a new Vulcan!
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab Exactly my point. It seems like they _used_ to listen to their customers, but no more? Or was it just that, in that case, the requests were so very public, being on TV and all.....?
Not only is Airfix is not delivering much but what is being produced has quality issues with the short shots. Sorry to say it but it don't look good for them.
Hello peter, I couldn't agree more on the 1/24 hurricane. And especially in battle of britain markings, my favourite subject is mainly 1939-1942 and I always found it disappointing that the 1/24 spitfire was not a mk.i or mk.v or another early war variant. Hopefully that will be different on my beloved hurricane :). keep up the great work mate!
I agree what you on the suggested Airfix releases - I’d buy all the suggested models (apart from the Eurofighter/Typhoon). And would love to see a re-release of the 1/48 English Electric Lightning and Sea Vixen. I’d buy two of each of the re-releases (and hope that the notorious airfix quality control issues had not effected the kits). Also agree ‘re Alvis Saracen - and they could then release the related Saladin and Stalwart in subsequent years. My personal wishlist (but they are niche items really, I would not expect them to be big sellers): - Boeing Sea Knight in 1/48 but in New York Airways civilian livery (as in the movie Coogans Bluff). I keep hoping that Academy will release a civilian scheme - but they never do. - The S.S United States in 1/400 or 1/600 (sad to report that this beautiful ship is due to be scuttled very soon). - Rolls Royce armoured car in 1/24 scale (or better yet, 1/16). Anyhow it has been, as always, a very enjoyable time spent in your company. I did brew up a nice pot of Darjeeling, but could not get a suitable custard slice so had to settle for a plate of McVities Fruit Shortcakes instead.
I purchased the Airfix Chinook, completely unbuildable. The warping and that release agent made me file it under R. The feedback i gave to Aifix was completely ignored. On social media i also suggested the Jag in 1/48.........nothing. My go to manufacturer is ICM.
Being a builder of 1/72 Spitfire’s the thing I would love Airfix to do is to scale down their 1/48 scale Spitfire Mk.XII and Mk.XVIII as well as their Seafire XVII to 1/72.
I would love to see either Airfix or ICM do a Wellington in 1/48, Tamiya having a go at a Centurion in 1/35 and if anyone anywhere can give me a new tooled 1/48 Hawker Typhoon that would make me a very happy boy! Also I agree with you on Border Models, if they can''t be bothered why should we.
Another great video Peter. Completely agree with everything you say on Airfix - 1/48 Jag definitley the other obvious one for me is a re-tool of the 1/72 Halifax, this has been requested again and again and ignored. So many variants they can do.
I’m putting my hand up for the CAC Boomerang in all three major scales. The Special Hobby kits look nice in the box but they do have their issues with fit. Kiwi Wings kits demand a level of ability beyond many modellers and the Airfix kit is just too old. A 1/32 kit from a major manufacturer would be nice.
Hello Peter: Your comments on Airfix are music to my ears, although I must disagree with you on their Gannet release (I am deep into my own build and am delighted to have such an unusual model available). You are right that Airfix's core market is over 45 British men, most of whom saw many British cold war subjects flying at airshows. So, like me, they have an emotional and nostalgic attachment to these aircraft (I am pretty much exclusively a British Cold War aircraft modeler). I very much agree with you about the need for a new Sepecat Jaguar (loads of neat color schemes), Tornado, and Eurofighter in both scales. To be fair, Airfix have done some great Cold War British aircraft in recent years: the three V-bombers, Buccaneer in both scales, plus Lightning, Sea-Vixen, Meteor, Gnat, Chipmunk, Javelin, Hunter, Sabre, Vampire, Merlin, Lynx, Sea King in 48. They have also produced good 72 versions of the Phantom, Harrier, Vampire (two-seat), JP, and Meteor (the only newish Airfix kit I struggled with). Along with the kits you mentioned, a 48 scale Phantom, Scimitar, and Sea Venom would be welcome, as well as new Canberras in 72. In terms of choppers, I was delighted to see the iconic Chinook, but would now like a 48 Puma (lots of versions and users). In the longer term, I's like to see Airfix update their C-130, and perhaps offer some other classic transports like the Beverley and Argosy. Finally, like you, I can't understand why Airfix abandoned the big announcement at Telford. Seemed like a winning marketing ploy.
I get what you're saying about the great airfix releases 10 years plus ago, mosquito, typhoon etc. etc. But the problem is, they are only available for 5 minutes, then they disappear and can then only be bought for stupid money on resale sites. If they were really that popular, why don't they keep re-releasing periodically for the masses to access? I couldn't afford many of them at the time first time around, but possibly could now. I'm sure there are others who have developed in their skills over recent years and would now like to buy a more advanced kit direct from airfix? There is a reason they keep doing new spitfires - they must surely be the ones which are selling most, easy to produce and be a means to a quick profit to keep themselves afloat.
@@MatthewSouthall-b8u You make a good point there, but the question we should perhaps be asking is: How come they can re-issue a dodgy old 1970 Harrier 1/24 or many of these other 'classics' and yet not re-release those nicer, more recent 10-year old kits you mentioned? 🤔
I dont understand why either Airfix or Revell dont make a BV206 in 1/35. It is in service all over the world. Both military and civilian. Same goes for BvS_10 ,or BV410 , both the British and the German armies have bought them. The Rheinmetall MAN HX could be included in this. Take the approach that ICM have with vehicles and figuresand tranfer it in to a modern era. That would sell.
Definitely agree with your comments, especially regarding Airfix, I too desperately want them to be successful. Like so many others my first kit was a 1/72 Spitfire MK.I that I built with my dad, as a result Airfix holds a special place in my heart. Being a younger modeller (in my mid twenties) I really want Airfix to be around throughout my lifetime but with their recent releases sadly I honestly don’t see them being too successful in the future. Releases like their 1/48 Bulldog is simply not going to draw new customers, and releasing new variants of other kits (that may not be great in the first place) means they won’t maintain us loyalists. For me I sadly have to admit I’ve moved away from purchasing Airfix and my stash has branched out massively with only the minority being Airfix kits. If they actually re released kits that are interesting, are newer toolings (not vintage classics) and would sell e.g. the variants of the Victor, Valiant, Canberras, 1/48 Lightning etc. then I would be strongly tempted to return and actually purchase their kits. Being a British company with a likely majority of their customer base being from the UK I would strongly advise them (to attract customers from those across all age ranges) to focus on what aircraft the RAF have been using over the last 30-35 years. The main culprits being the Tormado, Typhoon, Harriers, Jaguar, BAe Hawks, Tucano, Sea King, Puma, Merlin, Lynx, Wildcat etc. I’m aware some of those may not sell as well as the headline jets but I do believe they would be bought by a wide range of people for a while to come. Scale wise I think they would sell across the board, 1/72 still has an enormous fan base especially amongst those starting the hobby, whilst 1/48 would sell like hot cakes for those of us who want more detail and a happy medium of size, detail, difficulty etc. Anyway time to wrap this comment up as it’s turned into an essay I may decide to add more in a few days as I’ve probably got lots more to say!
@@tallyhoscalemodels Interesting…It’s pricey now but was around a reasonable £140 when it arrived at Xmas ‘14. They must have got the numbers wrong…I suppose when you consider the Border 1/32 Lancaster cost, it’s still a bargain!
Loved the video, really enjoyed it !! When I heard your suggestions and rant on a particular kit, yes you know the one, I thought I must be an anti Peter as none of the suggestions appealed to me, and I have the Gannet, Ferret and Fw-189🧐. Just goes to show, no accounting for taste. 🤭 I keep hoping Airfix do a 1/72 Manchester and re-release some American subjects with British markings, like the B-24 and B-17. Talking about low hanging fruit, what about a 1/72 Halifax/Stirling as the kits currently availible have some issues. They've done all the V-bombers, so why not all the heavies and complete the set. A big miss I think is, they didn't do a 1/48 Fairey Battle or Barracuda, now we're going to be stuck with Trumpeters version. Looking forward to the ICM 1/48 Hampden and hopefully Hereford !! Still hoping for a 1/48 Mk X/XI Spitfire (sorry, I said Spitfire 🤫)
Arma just announced two kits in 1:72 scale: Ki-43 Hayabusa (in preorder) and Hawk 75A. They are not going to release Stuka in 1:72 or any other scale just because they do not interested in bombers subjects. Still their P51D is on the way. Three new kits in such short time so you cannot expect anything other for longerr time.
Nice video Peter. However, I am surprised you didn’t mention diorama containing kits. Done right they may be popular with mainstream modellers and passing trade. If ICM did 72 or 48 scale kits of armour with diorama bases I think they’d sell - if nothing else it’d be different. An up to date LRDG would surely be popular?
On the same lines, model manufacturers releasing kits of unusual variants, training versions of famous aircraft. Hobbyboss Mig 17 for example, if you want a Mig17 it would be the version that fought in Vietnam and out performed the F4’s , not some polish airforce trainer. Makes no sense!
I understand what you are saying Peter, especially with regard to kits such as the Gannet. I bought that kit because my father worked on them in his career in the FAA. However, I understand why it might not have "legs" in market place. Airfix is part of my youth and I have a romantic attachment to them, and it hurts me to see them struggling.
I seem to think Newark museum feel out with airfix at one time because of the number of kits they had to order knowing it would take them years to sell at a profit
If you want something a little different and interesting, look up Dora Wings. They make some really well tooled inter-war/unusual planes in 1:48 scale, very refreshing. Some of the fit of parts can be a challenge but overall very well made and go together well. I recommend you check them out.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab I recently built both versions of their Curtiss-Wright CW-21, a fantastic design that went into limited production. It is a unique design, almost characature/cartoon design and went together very well.
1/48th Jaguar. Also, a 1/48th Jaguar. And if they're really serious, a 1/48th Jaguar.

A new Halifax, would surely sell. I know a lot of people including myself would love to see a Stirling. HI Peter I hope airfix do more quick build tanks and for aircraft like to see some world war 1 in 1,48 scale@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab
@@stuartsteel1Very interesting! A great idea! If we can get youngsters into modelling as a cross-over from gaming, could be a win-win!
This is the death of the hobby.
I think War Thunder has some deals with a model brand to cross brand their tanks. I don't know if it does them any good.@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab

There is a big gap in the market for 1/35 Cold war Vehicles and armour such a the good old Stally, Abbot SPG, CVRT series, Saracen, Humber Pig and the good old FFR land rover. If we want these we have to pay over the odds for resin examples.
Accurate Armour do these but in resin. Check your bank balance first!

And if any aftermarket companies are listening: pre-painted pilots, for the artistically challenged ones like me who have a real problem with making them look half-human.

My problem with Airfix is " allegedly" their shoddy quality control. 3 out of the 9 kits I purchased this year, from them, had short shot or sink mark issues. 33% fail rate is very sloppy!

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab That is a real shame. In the day I enjoyed visiting model shops every opportunity that I got. I agree, multi colour sprues, stands and new schemes.

Leaving out the pilot and crew figures is really annoying!!!
MIG-21-F13 .Gnat F1 in 1:48, VL Myrsky in 1:48, Blenheim 1:48 Longnose
From the Global perspective: the early Mustangs in 1.48 with Allison engines, Whirlwind in both scales, FIAT G50,
F-84G Thunderjet, Jaguar, Mirage etc
The Hobby Boss Easy Assembly kits in 1:72 are cheap and have a good range of WW2 kits, but extending it to the Cold War is also a great idea, those easy build kits are an easy way to build fast and If painted carefully they look just great (at least for my eyes)
If possible, Airfix should do those as well to introduce people back to this hobby. The price of the models are high, because they contain to many parts and complicated build phases. That is also a major issue for the industry, to make profits. Tamiya has released their old models at cheap prices and the are just fine for a re-entry to this marvelous hobby. The quality of the older kits are just fine,
@@juhasaarikko2296 Thanks, Juha! 😄 Some interesting ideas there...👍🏻
For Airfix. A 1/350 model of the QE2. That would sell like hotcakes and you could do different versions like it's configeration in the Falklands..
Not sure what your problem is with the 1/35 ferret. I'm quite glad its now available in a form that doesn't cost the earth in resin .
The logo should be stone henge-inspired?
😂
I just wish Wingnut Wings would return or another company buy up the molds. I came back to modelling eight years ago but only discovered I love building WW1 aircraft a year ago. Lots of 1/72 and 1/48 which I like but I would love to have some of the bigger scale aircraft.
This! Airfix/Hornby buying those molds and toolings would be a fantastic and wise investment
I love the rants. . . . . . But, Peter you do go round the houses. 35 mins in before recommendations. Being 63 I am in the age range, but can you be more concise as my attention span relates to my age too 😂
I was giving you background info (Hornby especially) to put the situation in context...as Obi-Wan said to Luke: "Patience!" 😆
That would be cool!
And, of course, the problem now is that it's the teenagers running Airfix and the adults are the customers...
I think sime good subjects would be the following:
Airfix - 1/48 new tool Canberra, EE Lightning and also a 1/48 Phantom FGR 2.
Zoukei Mura - 1/32 Arado Ar234 and Messerschmitt Me262A
Tamiya need to come back to 1/32 with a Hawker Hurricane Mk 1 or even a Stuka.
An m4 grizzly,
FFG wisent 1 and 2 arv and aev variants
The danish m113g with the added on armor and the extended g4 version with the new rubber band tracks instead of the original steel ones and have both danish an Ukrainian markings.
And lastly I want to see the companies succeed and our hobby continue. I’m only 24 years old and I still want to have this hobby in 20-30 years if possible
You are spot on & refreshing to hear this from a younger modeller too! 👍🏻
Oh yes to the Piranhas.. its not like there ain't strkers out there. A new hull-top and other tweaks can't be that much of an ask ...surely?
@@madrob451 Yes, me too, though I hear they lost money on the Mosquito so maybe that put them off? 🤔
Yes I agree: My issue with the Gannet is the odd subject choice, not the excellent kit. Seems a waste of great engineering to me.
When Airfix did their Nimrod, I was eagerly looking forward to more variants, including earlier ones.
Why can't Airfix do a 1/350 ship or a 1/44 submarine. I'm sure there would be a lots of interest.
@@baanibarnes9711 That would probably have been more popular than the Mk.VIII 👍🏻
Easy...Lets manage our expectations! 😂 that would be huge!
@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab lol poolside cannon ball on the market
Bang on with the Spitfire it seems every year there's a release, what I'd like to see are the big bombers mainly the Halifax which has disappeared!
Hi Peter I think it's important for you to explain the difference between Profit loss and Financial loss Airfix is suffering profit loss
@@jasman71 Ooops! 🤭 At least they did proper research. 👍🏻
1/200 Scharnhorst
1/32 Mosquito
1/350 Fuso
1/48 Mig 29 GWH
1/35 jagdpanzer iv L/70a
The last airfix kits that remotely interested me were the V-bombers which i brought and built.
Kits i'd like to see-
1/35 Stalwart
1/35 Bedford MJ
1/35 one ton Land Rover with 105 light gun
1/24 Jaguar F-Type
1/72 Tornado GR1/4 & F2/3
Thanks for the info! 👍🏻
I'm a Pacific theatre fan Peter... 1/48 Corsair Devastator Avenger ........I'd buy them all....
Or overlooked ww2 british planes.
May I suggest the Fairey Albacore, the Avro Manchester, the Fairey Barracuda, the A.W. Albermarle ?
I fully agree with you, Peter. Look what Airfix did with the Sea Fury. A fantastic and international wanted model now changed..WHY???
Fairey Battle keeps coming up...👍🏻
The SEPECAT Jaguar would be nice.
On a personal level but also much needed, you touched on it, is a really good Harrier GR7/9. The Hasegawa one is very ish.
Yes indeed, - that would also be a good call for Airfix. 👍🏻
Yes indeed, but sadly they have seemingly moved away from those winning ways!?
My personal wishlist (but they are niche items really, I would not expect them to be big sellers):
- Boeing Sea Knight in 1/48 but in New York Airways civilian livery (as in the movie Coogans Bluff).
Thanks! 😊 I won't argue against a new-tool EE Lightning in 1/48...🤤
I purchased the Airfix Chinook, completely unbuildable. The warping and that release agent made me file it under R. The feedback i gave to Aifix was completely ignored. On social media i also suggested the Jag in 1/48.........nothing. My go to manufacturer is ICM.
Yes I saw examples of Chinook with exactly the same issues...I declined to review it.
Totally agree 👍🏻
Thank you for that interesting contribution. 👍🏻😊
The Tamiya 1/32 Mosquito was a financial bust for Tamiya. I think that made them gun shy about doing more 1/32 kits.
I keep hoping Airfix do a 1/72 Manchester and re-release some American subjects with British markings, like the B-24 and B-17.
@@davidmike1391 No more Spits! 😤🤨
@@craigrice4479 Hi Craig, I did mention that at 1.10.05 😊
On the same lines, model manufacturers releasing kits of unusual variants, training versions of famous aircraft. Hobbyboss Mig 17 for example, if you want a Mig17 it would be the version that fought in Vietnam and out performed the F4’s , not some polish airforce trainer. Makes no sense!
More dedicated pilot figure sets in 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 would be very welcome, especially seated crews.
@@Floreal78 FYI; ICM WILL SOON RELEASE A FULLY SEATED CREW FOR THE 1/48 B-26 MARAUDER! 👍🏻
Just for me, airfix would do good with 1920 to 1935 subjets. Particularly aircraft in 72 scale, both military and civilian british.
The Alvis Stalwart ( the Stolly ). We used these as amphibious battle field delivery trucks in Germany. Rivers were no obstacle😆.
If you want something a little different and interesting, look up Dora Wings. They make some really well tooled inter-war/unusual planes in 1:48 scale, very refreshing. Some of the fit of parts can be a challenge but overall very well made and go together well. I recommend you check them out.
@@baanibarnes9711 Thanks...👍🏻 I discovered them recently: ua-cam.com/video/Um5OEC_1Sac/v-deo.htmlsi=bgKIufySTN-NS5dj
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab I recently built both versions of their Curtiss-Wright CW-21, a fantastic design that went into limited production. It is a unique design, almost characature/cartoon design and went together very well.
