    The Foxbat may have been limited outside of being an outstanding high speed bomber interceptor and reconnaissance platform, but in those rolls. It works very well.
    Now if only someone could make the MiG-25PD for DCS...

    • @showtime112
      @showtime112  2 місяці тому +8

      Oh yes, that would be awesome. Some people suggest that there should be another FC3 series of modules for DCS with models which can't be done in high-fidelity for some reason. It might cover Russian planes such as the Foxbat. I think it would improve the sim greatly.

    • @cannonfodder4376
      @cannonfodder4376 2 місяці тому +4

      @showtime112 Lots of people don't want more FC3 style planes though. Which I think is unfortunate if that path looks to be the only avaliable route to getting more RedFor planes for DCS.

    Great story. I worked at Raytheon in Andover MA where they built the Hawk and Patriot. The Hawk was still in production then. I also remember when Victor Blenko stole a Mig-25 and landed in Japan. Interesting times. I didn't know they made and recon version of the Mig-25. That the Russians flew them themselves is certainly SOP for them.

      MiG-25 was made into quite different interesting variants, not only photographic recon but also bomber, SLAR, ELINT and SEAD as well, each with their own designation. The high altitude performance of the airframe made it a very good platform for these other roles besides interception.

      I had read many articles about the Mig-25s in the middle east, what I concluded from them was that the Iraqis were most probably their best operators, although they rarely used them for what they were actually intended to be, bomber interceptors, probably because no other airforce in the middle east had supersonic bombers aside from Iraq itself, however they somehow fully utilized the edge that the Foxbat had on its adversaries which is speed. Too bad what the fate of the Mig-25s was after the Gulf War, some were scraped and after the 2003 invasion the US forces completely destroyed all Iraqi Mig-25s despite them being out of service, they could've got a better ending than that, it was meaningless and pretty much barbaric to let troops vandalize and destroy equipment that had history for the Iraqi people.

They didn’t want to Egyptians to get compromised and reveal advanced Soviet tech. Mig25 is the epitome of ‘boom and zoom’ plus as already stated, it’s original mission, (adopted by the later Mig 31), was area intercept, focussing on aircraft equally incapable of manoeuvring such as XB-70 Valkyries. Fox bats have a lot of real estate to look after and the high speed is as much to get to where they are needed, with short notice from GCI, and later AWACS.

    As a member of the Soviet military mission in Egypt recalled, Israeli intelligence had its agents among the Egyptian personnel of the base. As a result, the flights of the Mig-25 were not entirely a surprise to the Israelis. Therefore, the Russians decided to use a trick. Some observations regarding the operational record of the MiG-25 interceptor versions.
    1) As an interceptor in Soviet service the MiG-25 was used exclusively by the PVO, that is the Soviet Air Defence Forces, and usually aircraft developed specifically for use by the PVO were considered sensitive technology and were not exported even to Warsaw Pact member states. However, the 1976 Belenko defection completely compromised the MiG-25P (the baseline interceptor version) and hence the PD version was developed in a crash program, including many modifications like a new radar (a version of the radar used by the MiG-23ML/P, the first Soviet radar with a look down/shoot down capability), an IRST system, a new datalink and other improvements, something which also cleared the type for export, something which without Belenko's defection would most likely have never happened.
    2) There is quite a lot of contradictory information regarding the MiG-25 interceptors exported to Arab states, namely Algeria, Iraq, Syria and Libya in the late '70s, but it looks like they were a mixture of MiG-25P and PD, having basically the same radar as the P version but with some of the improvements of the PD.
    3) Regarding the Syrian claim from 1981 mentioned in the video about a Syrian MiG-25 shooting an Israeli F-15 down, it is part of a long list of such claims by Arab air forces, and some of them are described in detail in a Tom Cooper article in the War Is Boring website. Some of these claims are more credible than others, but ironically don't include what is actually by far the most credible case for an F-15 being shot down in air to air combat, the F-15E (callsign Corvette 03) shot down on January 19th 1991, day 3 of operation Desert Storm. Although it is usually credited to an SA-2 SAM, something which is the case with the article mentioned above as well, official USAF sources actually credit it to a Iraqi MiG-25, which if is indeed the case shatters the widely made claim that no F-15 has ever been shot down in air to air combat. If some F-15s have been shot down in air to air combat, we are certainly talking about a very small number of aircraft, something that changes practically nothing regarding the F-15s overall combat record, but would still constitute another example of debunked mythmaking, unsubstantiated claims being constantly repeated till they are accepetd as fact, and then debunked by more careful research.

Late MiG-21 and early MiG-23 variants had an even worse time facing teen series fighters because they had literally zero advantages. The MiG-25 at least had a big radar, big missiles and big engines and was able to engage US planes while everything else they had was just a sitting duck.

      @@showtime112It was likely because the Iraqis saw the Mig-25's success in their war with Iran as a good reason to keep their best pilots on the foxbats instead of the new untested Fulcrums, would've been interesting to see how far the Iraqis could've pushed the Foxbats had the odds been even in the Gulf War and had Saddam not ordered the IrAF to avoid confrontation with the coalition airforces.

    The website Skywar Aviation in Local Conflicts has a detailed list of Syrian Air Forces losses in Lebanon in 1982, citing Syrian sources which confirm the loss of 68 aircraft. Interestingly, the MiG-25RB shootdown on August 31st 1982 described at the end of the video, is mentioned in the list but described as a false claim. A complete picture of the aerial warfare over Lebanon in 1982 can emerge only if and when the Syrian Air Force archives and records become available for historical research, something extremely unlikely to ever happen.

    Can you try making a video on the service of the MiG-25 in India, especially around and during the Kargil War? I would understand if you can't, because the IAF was so secretive about it's Foxbat that they didn't even officially say it had the aircraft until after retirement

    Hymp. No match best be in perspective. An F15 is just another plane.
    The Foxbat is not a turn n burn frame like the Eagle AND Syrians are ill trained. Critical errors.

    So why is the AIM-7 Sparrow doing so well in Israeli hands against such a difficult target as the Mig-25? We have all read that the AIM-7 has a very low successful hit rate something like 10 % but here we have almost 60% in the described encounters.

    • @showtime112
      @showtime112  2 місяці тому

      First of all, Sparrow missile was continuously improved. F version was much better than the E model used in Vietnam (where the success rate was even lower than 10%). Second thing, you didn't count well 😁 In all these engagements, Israelis fired eight missiles resulting in three Foxbats shot down. That's 37,5 %. Sparrow could be quite accurate against non-maneuvering targets, especially in look-up. In Vietnam, they were often fired at maneuvering, small fighters, outside of parameters and multiple shots were standard practice.
