- Distant Worlds 2 is a very deep and rich space simulation game. It is a space opera with incredible replay value. In this series I hope to peel back the layers in the game and provide a reference for many of the various game mechanics. Above all, I hope this series will provide a way for players to feel comfortable playing this incredible game.

#DasTactic #DistantWorlds2 #DW2 - Ігри
Hi guys. Distant Worlds 2 is available on my Nexus store at www.nexus.gg/dastactic/distant-worlds-2
Not there
I've always adored Stellaris, I've played it off and on since it launched way back when, but DW2 was the first game to really showcase the SCALE of an interstellar empire to me. I LOVE the slow pre-warp start, slowing mining and building around your planet, and soon your solar system and soon making your first jump to a new system. The grand scale of DW2 is what keeps me coming back.
If I'm just in the mood for a quick space game Stellaris is always my go to. It's a fantastic game, but when I want that slow burn, huge scale feeling, DW2 is what I load up.
U forgot the most important distinction between the two games: DW2 has no space roads and is, therefore, a proper space game.
He actually did cover that, although briefly.
Something I love about your videos (and this is embarrassing to admit) is that you help me enjoy these games more. I'll open a given game and it just doesn't move me, and then I watch your vids and I'm more interested in it afterwards. That doesn't speak well for my attention span (...I guess?) but I do appreciate your videos. Anyway, now I'm more interested in DW2 than I was before, by strange coincidence.
Thats how I learned EU4 mid-way in its development, 6-7 DLC in. I think this holds very true to grand strategy games, you have to see it a bit, get the sense of it, and then jump in on your first playthrough. Have fun!
New player here, one thing that I like about Distant Worlds vastly over Stellaris is how much it doesn't abstract concepts. one thing that stands out to me in particular is during warfare, because the fleets are individual ships doing their own things to the best of their abilities, the battles aren't a do or die affair. Hit and run and asymmetric warfare is entirely doable in this game. where you enter a system of a superior enemy with a small force, do damage and then get out before your force is overwhelmed.
You can peck your enemy to death, in Stellaris you can't do that. it's always massive death stack engagements, whichever composition has the most raw DPS wins.
Das: There really isn't that much that you need to learn to be able to get into this game.
*transitions immediately to a massive, overwhelming space battle* :D
Das: "I don't want to forget the three percent..."
Me: 😊*instant sub!!!*
Finally! The first video I saw from you was a DW1-Tutorial.
Lol. That was a long time ago. :)
@@DasTactic We two are similar young. Greetings from Vienna.
Starting DW2 today for the first time because of this video. Thank you. Also, I'm becoming a patron.
Thanks Andre. Much appreciated. :)
This is best notification of the day
Great stuff. Excellent explanation for those who might be intimidated by DW2.
Thanks. :)
love to see the long awaited DW2 tutorial series!
For sure looking forward to all this! I am getting to a point where I want to sit down and learn to make my way through this game.
Amazing, thanks for this whole series! Can't wait to listen to all of them. Even your new player primer video from last year is still timely, maybe add it to the list at the end?
Das, I been watching you since your CK2 days man. Amazing content that you have provided us. Thank you!
Great video Das, keep them coming please 🙏
I've played a huge amount of both.
Stellaris has a comparatively simple introduction and overview with an unfathomable amount of hidden depth and knowledge that learning genuinely makes you head and shoulders better than others.
DW2 has a very complicated first look that is rapidly diminished down to doing about 4 things and letting the AI do the rest, as there's very little decisionmaking you can do that the AI doesn't do just as well and faster and with less clicks.
Both are fun, Stellaris is a lot more rewardingly replayable to me. DW2 has a lot of potential but I feel like once you know, you know.
I've always kind of struggled to get into Stellaris because while it has a few cool story features and things it struck me as a dumbed-down clone of DW:U I really do need to check out all the new content in that game though
Stellaris is a dumbed down cartonish arcade style of game while DW2 has a much more "realistic" approach. Also Space Battles in Stellaris are a huge clusterfuck...you jump into the system and your ships fly all towards enemy and the blob building starts, not to mention scale...ships cross a Stellaris System in couple seconds with normal propulsion while DW2 you need Warp. Another huge thing is free travel thru the Galaxy and not these ridicolous linear star system connections in Stellaris...its almost pathetic and how things were done in 2002. I leave it at that as the list goes on and on.... EDIT: the ressource model, transport, private sector, military sector etc etc in DW2 is so much more indepth while Stellaris is almost a one dimensional browser game (Paradox over complicated math and stats model make the game not deeper) not even talking about the ridiclous bonus system with magic flat bonuses to all kind of stats camouflaging them with fancy names but its as shallow as a puddole of water. All in all. Stellaris is for arcade gamers and DW2 for people who want more realistic indepth simulations of Space 4x
@@Iridescence93 I have the same feeling. I tried Stellaris several time since his released, I even bought all the major DLCs, I really wanted to like this game, but each time I tried it felt very hollow and repetitive very quickly and I get bored.
@@LudoTechWorld Well, is Stellaris feels repetetive, then DW 2 is not for you, you can't design your own races here or anything, its basically the same every game. Stellaris got a huge range of options and ways to play.
@@Janster01 I don't think it has something to do with customization. I have hundreds and hundreds of hours of play in DW Universe, not a lot yet in DW2 (around 80) but I can play with the same race and the exact same settings 10 times in a row, it feels completely different each time while in Stellaris, no matter what I tried, I'm bored very quickly. Maybe "repetitive" was not a good word. I don't know what it is exactly but the fact is that when I play Stellaris I'm thinking about what I want to play instead, when I play DW I'm hooked in its universe even if nothing is happening gameplay wise. I'm not saying Stellaris is a bad game, it's just clearly not for me.
Great insight man. Thanks for the video
Excellent first look tutorial
I literally just installed the game last night and started playing around with it and saw that you had posted this video. Talk about fortuitous timing
What a great game for todays multi core systems!
Excited for these guides. We need a DW2 DasTactic tshirt
Great to see you doing this one. I always learn a lot from your series and Distant Worlds might even have been my introduction to what was then Das24680, or it might have been Fallen Enchantress… I don’t remember, but I know it was a long time ago. Both Distant Worlds and Stellaris, go right up my flagpole. But the problem I always have, is that playing one, makes me itch to play the other instead. Consequently I’ve never made big progress in either. No they’re strictly speaking not mutually exclusive. But I’ve tried playing both and I find that (for me anyway) it’s like Big Macs and Whoppers. If you’re in the mood for one, the other simply won’t do. :)
Just discovered you and watching your Age of Wonders Planetfall Tutorial and this is in my backlog so fantastic timing on my part 😊
Hope you enjoy it. :)
Howdy from DW2 newbie out west of Melbourne mate! ;)
This man got the Rizz like no other.
Great timing Das, just picked up the DLC and am curious what has changed before jumping back in. Thanks in advance for the series!
I have been playing Stellaris as a roleplay but it looks like DW2 will be better suited for that.
Aussie?
I really want to try this but like you said seems daunting. Looking forward to learning from you :)
I've been playing Distant Worlds since 2011 and have to say that I agree that MP play probably wouldn't be desirable. Now this is coming from someone that prefers MP play with games like Strategic Command, WitE and the like.
Distant Worlds 1 and Universe is so deeply immersive that I haven't needed that MP buzz like I get from other wargames.
Never really dug on Stellaris. Guess I got ruined on it by all the great stories that organically developed while playing DW. 🙂
damn.
I played so much stellaris and bought DW2 now. (didnt't yet play. and great content BTW!!!)
i know it might sound silly. but what i don't like in both games: SOUND IN DAMN SPACE. there is no sound!
i'm usually not a sucker for graphics.
but in space game, i just love the eye candy. i love flying my ships in star citizen. it looks so good.
stellaris manages to look pretty too.
DW2 does not. i zoomed in on the sips and sometimes they are built very weird with empty spaces within, which looks so ridiculous.
i get it though. you can't make it that pretty with a combat and economy like that.. it'd be a lagfest.
But the worst part, are the explosions. the explosions look like explosions of a WWII browser game from 2001.
Don't get me wrong. i think i will love the game. i'm 100% sure.
Just some things that irritate me >.>
Thanks for this! Haven’t touched since launch and I’ve been flipping a coin between going back to DW2 or learning Dwarf Fortress 😂
Both are excellent games. :)
@@DasTactic Your videos have been great for both in terms of learning and information. I appreciate what you do!
I have it and will keep supporting it, but... way to go still, honestly. BTW, please, I want aliens to look alien, not mutant humans.
Distant Worlds vs Stellaris - They're very, very similar but both I'd say are equally good for different reasons. I rate them both as the best 4x space games (with GalCiv 2 and MoO2 tied for second)
note, Im referring to distant worlds universe, I havent played DW2 yet
You can throw ISG into the mix as well. :) All great games.
@@DasTactic ISG... *googles* Interstellar Space: Genesis? I am unfamiliar with it, but I will take alook, thanks Das :) Or do you prefer Mr Tactics? :D
OH! There is also Aurora 4X. Ive only play that one a smidge, but I remember reading and seeing LPs about how good it is. Thoughts?
I don’t know why I ever delayed purchasing this game. I guess the mixed reviews in Steam but I will definitely pull the trigger on this now
The game should have launched in Early Access. TBH I feel it should still be Early Access. But it has improved steadily over time and this is reflected by the improving Steam ratings. I've heard from many players who didn't enjoy the game at launch but love it now.
believing the trolling on steam doesnt really help imho. watch guys doing lps to see what a game can bring you. and as i seem to have a similar game taste as dastactic i gladly follow his advice
@@chraanakhxattanach1639 absolutely and great advice
@@DasTactic early access is what kills games with poor reviews from people not understanding what early access even is. bad idea.
For me Interstellar Space Genesis is the standard. Micro-managing is minimal and I find it intuitive, this was too hard to get. There used to be tutorials and manuals released with games. Now if there are they are not any good. This was an example of that. If I'd watched this video before maybe I'd have kept the game but I doubt it. Still it's a pretty good video.
ISG is an incredibly good space 4X game. Really is the successor to MOO2.
I’d have preferred to play along with this series like I did with Dwarf Fortress, but see this will not be chronological. Ah well. Still looking forward to these episodes!
He has recent let’s plays but he seldom lists is random generator. Das list you random generator on your let’s play…
I'll be doing a series like that as well soon. Any excuse to cover this game. :)
@@DasTactic love it!
Sweeeet
@DasTactic Could you please re-upload Distant Worlds 1 Tutorials? Or provide a downloadable link?
Im here coz I want to take a break from all thr fun in DF.
says stellaris games are fast
me : going into the 4th month of the same game
Imagine a Star Wars mod for this game...
Want to play DW2, I've been playing stellaris for a few years but on Xbox, I have a computer but I dont want to get it on pc I'm waiting for it to release on Xbox x series that I have.
Do you know about the patch coming to GOG?
I'm sorry, I don't know. It is best to ask on the Matrix forum.
@@DasTactic Thanks!
I was initially excited because the GOG info promised sheep tactics....... Unfortunately, that may have been a typo.
The largest difference is the all in price... Stellaris requires a brinks bank truck to buy all the DLC.
I think drone is better world for smallcraft
sadly dw2 has nothing to offer over dwu currently, short of that promise to improve eventually, kind of like being locked into phone contracts, this living services is a bit of gamble to support a product for a long time..... and that wouldnt be a issue if i saw a feature from dw2 that i could like over dwu, which is none currently,
and stellaris, same thing really its gone epically stale, (i dislike the lack of economy like trade etc) i dislike it, but theres more to play with there once i get my urge to play it back again, likely with a pc upgrade.
Personally, I much prefer the changes in DW2 over DW1 or even DWU. Still more QoL that could be added, but I love the changes to ship design and ship combat. Even the weapon fields of fire add so much more than the original where all weapons had 360 degrees. But it is definitely personal preference. :)
@@DasTactic i'd settle if they lessoned the visual distractions like the over-the-top gui, unit selection is very unsightly, i tried to find a mod for it or something (and this was from the most recent update). **and im the sort of tinkerer that changes everything as often as i can... and i didnt find it** the list goes on really, but i brought the game ages ago, based on even the things i didnt like, and i'll likely get the dlc, its the same thought i had with stellaris (it will get better) and sadly its gone off in a direction i never liked. But there is still hope, but not in a direction i can see yet. Sadly im negative about this (here is for hoping im surprised somehow, someday soon)
8 mins on the intro screen... Time well spent
Problem with Stellaris like many Paradox games is they don't know how to do a UI. only recently had this started to improve. It's always been, I just want to do this simple thing....5 hours of research later, oh it's hidden away somewhere!
i love both games but stellaris is too micro heavy to enjoy. lets face it THE overwhelmingly majority of stellaris is colonzing and trying to specialize your planets and stabalize your economy. you have to do this so much and so often you dont have any time to enjoy warfare diplomacy or espionage... I have never finished a stellaris game in over 500 hours. I managed to finish a couple in DW2 lol
Well, at the moment the main difference between Stellaris and DW2 is that Stellaris doesn't have an older version of the game that's still far better (and much cheaper) than the newer.
The older version has been out longer and has had several expansions and overhauls. The same can be said of any sequel that has just come out, much like KSP and KSP 2 as well recently. If this comes as a surprise to you then the mind boggles.
The old version is no longer better un modded. Has more crap but I will never play it again and I had 500+ hours in universe.
@@TheT0nedude I'm wondering if you've deliberately missed the point just to sound off. That's okay though as these are UA-cam comments after all, so you do you, cupcake.
I'm a visual person and I love the changes from 2d sprites to 3d models - much more immersive, especially in a space game. The increased content will clearly be coming over the next few years, some of which will be free of charge.
"at the moment" being the pertinent point. DWU is a wonderful game, but DW2 is shaping up to be a fine replacement. Personally I am beginning to think that DWU (modded) might be history for me. I do agree that DW2 didn't launch as a finished article, but the more I understand the differences, the more it grows on me. And it's got Steam Workshop support, so can only get better.
I purchased Distant Worlds 2 mainly because of your excellent videos.
Your throwing too much advanced info at us. Start at the beginning and as the game advances bing in these details when we have context. This assumes this series is for new players like me.
Difference that matters to me is Stellaris is Paradox so that means you probably need a bunch of trickled out dlc that'll add up to $400 for the planned experience, no thanks.
And the DLC content will be implemented in your game whether you buy it or not, meaning the AI will get those benefits while you will not until you buy it.
8:50 This is not a good idea. Haha
jezzz... spent more than 5mins of intro... just need the facts 😮
Stellaris is a hollow game. Simplistic and boring. Distant Worlds 1 and 2 are better games mechanically.
Dw2 has no MP, so get owned. Also stellaris has a huge community and community mod.
@@galdon9508 What does not having mp have to do with getting owned? MP games need to be fast paced, DW2 is not.
Stellaris has multiplayer and a large community mod, so Stellaris is better.
Solaris is grey, zombie green, portraits are horrible, very unattractive. No joy at all.
The most important 3%. Ok so you don't want man to watch your content? Bye
Huh?
Bye troll
He was offended by the placating of women.
People are so utterly brainwashed now. How you can possibly find offence in such an innocuous comment. Just sad.
Was that a serious comment?!?
Thank you for information, comrade. I finally bought it today after watching your tutorial, and believe me, its very hard to bough something from western services in Russia those days of total russophobia
The starting menu design is very weird...the game title in the far left, almost hidden away, the planet rotates but the spaceship is static. Looks a bit amateur.
thats a space station. it seems to be orbiting the planet.
