- Distant Worlds 2 is a very deep and rich space simulation game. It is a space opera with incredible replay value. In this series I hope to peel back the layers in the game and provide a reference for many of the various game mechanics. Above all, I hope this series will provide a way for players to feel comfortable playing this incredible game.

Perfect timing. I saw your video on the DW2 update. I fired it up this weekend and it’s actually playable for me now. Runs smooth now compared to the choppy game play at release.

I have enjoyed setting a personal restriction where I only build mining stations manually, and only in systems where i have a colony. The benefit of this is that you have less places enemies can attack, especially defending remote mining stations is a serious drain on military attention as the empire grows (the AI likes to spam those mining stations still). It also allows private industry to make use of mining ships even into late game for resources you dont have in your colonized systems, which is a nice boost to economy. This allows me to beef up on mining stations that I actually do build, especially Caslon, with many dock bays and such.

Never thought watching options screens for over an hour could be entertaining. 😅 It was! Thanks for all the insights. It gives a good idea about the replayability this game offers just by playing around with these options alone. Looking forward to a funcky playthrough after this first "vanilla" one 😁
Small correction; the Difficulty setting only gives the AI a boost by progressively reducing how much it has to spend on research to get full benefit from research labs- otherwise, no cheats!
Another thing that is good to know is that General Story Events and Race-Specific Events both generate pirates. So, if a player wants no pirates, those need to be turned off.
Nice deep dive. I picked up a few things, despite having 50 or so hours with 10 or so starts. I tend to restart a lot as I decide I have learned enough to warrant starting over.

Great video! I love the Teekan race specific story, starting off with a second colony is nice, but it hits your wallet hard because it costs so much to support the development / terraform facility - and then you have to manage pirates visiting your system and whatever spare cash you have goes towards bribes leaving you practically broke. Can't wait for the next video!

Amazing videos about the game, you probably got me hooked to buy the game.
Seems better than Stellaris so far (what i desire).
Im giving you a wellmeaning critism. You talk the whole video. I m not native English speeker, this means that it gets almoust anoying bqs of the non stop talking.
The info is super, i just mean, talk a bit slower and maybe take some small pauses in the talking.

Days ago you made a comparison with Stellaris. The one I would like to see is one with D.W.U.! 1 vs 2 is still a thing, that alone is mind boggling.

The intro video in the first one was really good, at least for me. Soundtrack was also great. Don't know if I could go back though. Same as with Crusader Kings 2-3..

I’m thinking it might be nice to create a scenario like a early BSG style game with the 12 colonies of man. First goal is uniting the 12 colonies but with a major powerful bad in the background.

Nice choice, as always Das... I'm revisiting a lot of Space 4x games, was playing Star Ruler 2 last weak, Distant Worlds 2 is next on the list...
Ouch! I don't think I could bring myself to play Star Ruler 2 again. Had a heap of potential but is a little too old for me now when there are so many great space 4X to play. :)
You're right... I was cheking the modding scene on SR2... But lots of, if not better, more polished ones to try.

So how are you liking Star Ruler 2...? I was thinking of trying it myself... I have both the SR games but never tried them
@@david8157 It's very diferent from the first game, but in a good way in my opinion, the Ship Design is realy nice but what i enjoy the most is the card based Diplomacy. The game is open source now, you can get it free, but is being sold on Steam too, if you wan't to support the team. There are some nice mods with loads of races and tweaks and I'm making my own mods too.

The random research paths option sounds a bit like the old MOO1 tech design. Must try that once I get used to the game.
Now when it states cores, does it actually mean threads?

You know a game is going to be quick & simple when the game start intro tutorial is over an hour long...and that's after a 35 min overview video, ahem. 8-/
I dont min max but I do prefer to play Distant Worlds manually...

I finally configured it to run in Linux. First impressions is "wow, this game can play itself" lol
