nah that's cookie buff only. /bz too. and /anvil, and /etable, and /hex, and the simple commands that open the potion/accessory/fishing bags or the quiver. and npc shop selling being available from trades/cookie page, and bits being required for a large variety of useful items (kismets for dungeon chest rerolls, specific types of sacks as well as the sack capacity upgrade, etc.). did i mention that if you don't have cookie buff you lose half the money in your purse when you die? they also added that cool thing where you can toggle potion effects on and off. would be a shame if that was tied to a certain consumable irl-trade based buff. now it sure would be interesting if maintaining this buff was also significant for dropping more rare items and levelling your skills quicker. wait a second... so basically if you aren't funneling money into the game, you better funnel coins to the people who do or everything you want to do is made considerably less convenient. gl! small edit: i do want to clarify that i have had a lot of fun with skyblock over the last few years, i didn't keep playing for no reason. and i also do respect developer/administrative work quite a lot because i have been personally engaged in it and know how challenging and stressful it can turn out to be sometimes. it is just frustrating because on the individual level i actually have basically 0 issues with each member of the staff team, but at the collective level the behaviors of the hypixel administration have led to so many extremely unsavory outcomes that i felt obligated to say my piece. i'd also like to extend a huge digital hug and much gratitude to individuals like our friend tgwaffles here, who put in so much effort to help make skyblock more fun and safe for the average player even when it is such a difficult and thankless job (even from an entire team that is responsible for this job). i know it must be beyond disheartening to see some of the reactions that emerge, considering how natural it is for individuals to be uneducated on complex digital concepts like database management. the maintained commitment to improving the state of the game despite not really being compensated for it when you are dumping energy, time, and money into such project(s) is very admirable, and it is not lost on me
After about two years of not touching the game, i logged on and all my stats were wiped (still had my items though). And the only response from staff i got was basically them saying they don't undo wipes
The admins need to pick one: -Allow and encourage projects that let players check if items are duped -NOT ban players for merely possessing duped items Banning people for something while simultaneously making it impossible to know if you’re DOING that something, however, is 100% unjustifiable.
they could give each item some kind of trackable ID + a kind of history for ownerchange so that dupers could easily be found (creating the same kind of item 1000s of times) and understand the flows of the items, how many ownerchanges it has and so on.

It's crazy that this video got recommended to me considering I haven't played in years... Four months ago, some stranger DM'd my friend on discord trying to look for me because my friend and I had a co-op on Skyblock. I wasn't sure why somebody was looking for me, and I was super weirded out by the fact that they managed to find my friend and message him in the first place. He wanted my set of Emerald Armor I crafted in July 2019, which I dyed to a green that I preferred. I wasn't aware that armor wasn’t dyeable anymore, so I was thinking of handing it over to him once I finished up my ongoing semester at uni. However, upon looking into it more, I decided against it. After my semester ended, I figured I'd get on just to see how different the game was now, and the moment I logged in, I was blasted with party invites and people in my hub instance were trying to talk to me. That experience pretty much deterred me from returning to the game, and I just found it super weird that people would go such lengths just for a display piece. Anyways, I found the video very captivating, very nice!
I did! I decided that I would just keep it in my inventory and never log back on again. Another reason why I decided against giving the armor away is that it meant a lot to me and although I wouldn't play again, I realized I wasn't comfortable giving it to somebody I've never met. The reason why it meant something to me was that I crafted my set when very few people had Emerald Armor.
I did get an armor from someone who wasnt playing , but said to him to ask it back whenever he wants it , since im bot selling my dyed armors which are just for me to walk in differents lobbies xd
> Thomas wants to work as a developer at Hypixel > Thomas creates solutions for the community to get Hypixel's attention, which has not taken a position on the issues due to _____ > Thomas invests his OWN MONEY supporting these projects in a private data center > Project conflicts with Hypixel's interests, for example, it is costing more to maintain the servers, therefore, they are LOSING MONEY. > Hypixel updates its usage policies; projects become obsolete > Thomas ends up LOSING MONEY that he invested. Do you see the pattern here? Can you fill in the blank?
I think i got it. Hypixel upset that someone is having fun. Not even just someone, someones. Plural even, multiple users. Probably against their tos somewhere
@@alimisaye And that's the irony, it wasn't in the ToS before for a fair amount of time, so they weren't breaking any rules. Thinking back on it, it seems like they didn't like the project because it was from an independent external source rather than being overseen by the company.
I do not play Hypixel so i don't know whats so awful about them and all. But The way i see it Thomas created ITEM which constantly sent traffic to Hypixels servers (leading to them changing their TOS due to high cost not just his mod of course). ITEM allowed players to "SNIPE" aka harass Long term players/ old returning players/ any player with High value items. Thomas also publicly called out an Admin for cheating. (Sounds like he had good intentions but how it comes across is everything and it didn't go well). And if i understand ITEM correctly (I DON'T) he made an API that used players allotted ping request to gain a massive amount of info that could be used maliciously, learning all players items, Player lists, and Friends list, received from the ping request but saving peoples communications with the server is a little suspect. I really liked his video and his knowledge on Development is super cool i hope to learn more. The video is well made as well and everything he did seemed in good faith. seems like hypixel think that they do well enough that the community should just be grateful they do anything rather than trying to improve on what they have, from what i’ve heard and seen happen this would appear to be moderately delusional on hypixel’s part
hypixel devs have the largest egos for no reason like youre a dev on a minecraft server calm tf down. "Uh but thats our job" then do it a bit better damn. Also how not one player has asked for like half the most recent updates and still no foraging update (as of me least playing like 6 months ago for reference)
while there are glimpses of thoughts happening behind the eyes of the hypixel staff from time to time, their goals could almost always be better achieved by working with their community instead of against them to find solutions. no dev wants to burden hypixel with impossible upkeep costs but going "nup. because I say so" breeds animosity leading to more people wanting to inconvenience them
I personally have subtitles on whenever I watch a video, and it always frustrates me when there's a line that neither me nor the automatic subtitles understood, and the creator (especially if they are large/have a team) didn't correct them. Another thing that kills me is putting important content right where the subtitles go, meaning that I either have to turn off the subtitles & rewatch, or just miss out on those details. I add the hardcoded subtitles for those reasons, since it lets me see where I should avoid placing details (as they'd be covered by the subtitles) and lets me enter and correct them as I edit the video. Glad you appreciate it too :)
@@_thomas literally that effort is enough to make me subscribe. it’s that simple to include people who need subtitles-whether they just prefer to have the words on screen or because they use it as an accessibility tool! 24:48 Why shut down a specific project when the company has the power to regulate indirectly, in a generic sense? Let's take a moment to reflect on this approach: - Avoids direct conflict (even personal); - Encouraging Compliance (community following a set of rules); - Control of innovations; - Improves risk management.
Towards the start of the video I was getting super nostalgic as a player that hasn't played for a while. Seeing the community back in 2021 do this stuff gave me hope that maybe it would be fun if I were to come back. But as the video went on, I felt more and more dread. It sucks that this story ended so horribly due to actions that are so cool to hear about being denied... Maybe I won't be coming back to Hypixel after all.
Absolute outsider here. (I barely remember hypixel being a thing, never got around to trying skyblock) Well made video, interesting comment section since it seems people have strong opinions on hypixel. You definitely imposed on hypixels goodwill a just a little early on, the fault is shared though since they knew about the use case eventually and allowed it. I found it interesting that you seemed to have fully realized the impositions your projects eventually placed on others and kind of grew as a person over the course of the video. This is just the impression I got though. Hope hypixel properly responds to their playerbase desire for changes. As long as you are self aware of the costs associated with certain database projects I hope others at hypixel can appreciate your desire to offer unique player services such as the statistics you mentioned. Projects and communities like these need the passion to program you like you have.
as soon as i heard the 240 request problem my first tought was exactly your idea of using other peoples requests capacity to spread the workload a great solution that works best when its free to use by others
I haven't played Skyblock in years and probably will never again, but this is very cool. I really hope you'll find a new project that is more in line with Hypixel's ideas and maybe score that job one day.
First the fucking UA-cam algorithm fucking nailed this video, mixing statistics and coding and Minecraft. Either way as a developer, and a frequenter of scenes (like homebrew, game APIs, etc), (and maybe with the vantage point of hindsight) I could tell that Hypixel was not going to like your program. Although your approach is very clever and that signature scene feel and joy, it is that kind of thing that tends to piss off the companies above. From the perspective of the video you seem to iTEM, you were a "benevolent dictator" (akin to Linus Torvalds in Linux, but more extreme), as it didn't seem you had to "pay" contributions to use the project.
@@_thomas when you were asking for a dedicated api key, they could have asked for payment but didn't. I think this was some amount of pettiness to be honest, they clearly disliked it and kept calling it scraping, a technical misnomer that directly contradicts the point of your request. Realistically, they were probably upset that you'd called them out for their incompetence around duped items and false bans.
This is truly one of the most communistic moments in Hypixel history, but jokes aside, this was a really cool video, certainly a side of the community I haven't really seen myself, as an owner of a Magma Set Exotic I've often been asked to sell the armor, but I have a lot of attachment to it for it was the last set I actively used before quitting for like 4 years (And the reason for getting it was because of Techno's shenanigans on achieving flight or speed in Skyblock lmao). Nowadays I'm just keeping it to see how much people are willing to crank up the prices, but I'm most definitely not selling it off lmao, but seeing the ways people find their way to me is honestly very interesting.

I've literally never played Hypixel, I barely even know what it is, so I'm not sure why I was recommended this video. But I'm glad I was, this was a fascinating and entertaining watch!
I get why they did what they did. But I think a bit of communication with you could have lightened the API load and maybe have given you a way to go around the issue and provide a healthier service to the community... There was no malicious intent. And sometimes the pathway to hell is paved with good intentions. Wish It could have worked better... But maybe there's stuff we don't know about in the background. Oh well. Great video!
This sort of thing is really annoying when you're on the other end. I got a really rare TF2 item from an event on Steam and for a long time I kept getting random people trying to contact me to buy it. I don't know if people eventually lost interest or if Steam secured the information about who have what items, but luckily I haven't been contacted in years.
The lower stage of communism is "To each according to his labor." Marx wrote about this in GothaKritik. The Soviet Constitution quoted the Bible for this: "He who does not work, neither shall he eat."
Going into late stage with any economic/social system is general a bad thing. Being able to maintain an early stage of a system or composite system is likely the best
Reminded me of when i dyed my lapis armor white many years ago. Really great video! I learned a lot on mass scrapping and (almost) DDoS lel. In all seriousness, this was a great watch.
The funny thing about conservatives and "apoliticals" hating on communists for being too liberal or vice versa is that, where they capable of reading, they would know communists are the single most determined opponents to liberalism since the fall of the feudal lords.
holy shit dude i remember you advertising the cake soul club, i had even joined the discord when there was like 1k users. It's crazy to see how far you've come, congrats!
False. Communism has never been put into practice in the first place. The 3 main things you need to achieve communism are: -Abolition of money -Decomidification of goods -Dictatorship of the proletariat (Rule of the working class. Not in the sense of modern dictatorship, but in the sense of democracy because there is no other way to spread ultimate decision making power to an entire class of people) Every attempted communist experiment has failed to implement all 3, usually the last one. I wouldn't call Stalin a communist for example, I'd just call him a liar and a power hungry maniac. If you can name a single attempt at communism that managed to achieve all 3, I will concede that it's been tried and failed. But since I base my definition of communism on what was actually written down by Marx and Engles, I can't in good conscience say that communism has ever been tried, as much as I wish it were the case. in terms of classical Marxism, there can't be communism without democracy of some kind and the abolition of money. AT BEST you can say that the so called "communist" states were varying degrees of socialist pursuing the goal of communism but never achieved it. At worst they were a series of parties and dictators lying to and manipulating the working class into accepting a different form of government while they hid behind a red flag and chanted the words people wanted to hear. In all liklihood communism is just a dream we will never put into practice, but it doesn't mean it can't be a good goal to strive towards by being as democratic as possible and reigning in the worst tendencies of greedy people for the benefit of everyone. It doesn't mean we can't share the benifits of our labor by giving what we can and not taking more than our fair share. It's better to see it as a goal than a form of government, because no government will ever give up enough wealth and power to let it happen.
if i had a nickel for every time i heard of someone using distributed computing to find rare minecraft stuff, i would have two nickels. which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice

and then people are like "why does everyone keep comparing skyblock to wynncraft" or "haha everyone keeps saying skyblock is dying how dumb lolol"
skyblock is dying. the SPIRIT of skyblock is dying, and has been for a while. there might continue to be thousands of players for years to come but as time passes it is so easy to see that the majority of players are losing interest in mindlessly grinding their time away for mediocre returns in a game where money must be consistently funneled in so that even just some groups of players can have a moderately enjoyable experience, or one marked in any way shape or form by convenience. /ah? nah that's cookie buff only. /bz too. and /anvil, and /etable, and /hex, and the simple commands that open the potion/accessory/fishing bags or the quiver. and npc shop selling being available from trades/cookie page, and bits being required for a large variety of useful items (kismets for dungeon chest rerolls, specific types of sacks as well as the sack capacity upgrade, etc.). did i mention that if you don't have cookie buff you lose half the money in your purse when you die?
they also added that cool thing where you can toggle potion effects on and off. would be a shame if that was tied to a certain consumable irl-trade based buff.
now it sure would be interesting if maintaining this buff was also significant for dropping more rare items and levelling your skills quicker. wait a second...
so basically if you aren't funneling money into the game, you better funnel coins to the people who do or everything you want to do is made considerably less convenient. gl!
small edit: i do want to clarify that i have had a lot of fun with skyblock over the last few years, i didn't keep playing for no reason. and i also do respect developer/administrative work quite a lot because i have been personally engaged in it and know how challenging and stressful it can turn out to be sometimes. it is just frustrating because on the individual level i actually have basically 0 issues with each member of the staff team, but at the collective level the behaviors of the hypixel administration have led to so many extremely unsavory outcomes that i felt obligated to say my piece.
i'd also like to extend a huge digital hug and much gratitude to individuals like our friend tgwaffles here, who put in so much effort to help make skyblock more fun and safe for the average player even when it is such a difficult and thankless job (even from an entire team that is responsible for this job). i know it must be beyond disheartening to see some of the reactions that emerge, considering how natural it is for individuals to be uneducated on complex digital concepts like database management. the maintained commitment to improving the state of the game despite not really being compensated for it when you are dumping energy, time, and money into such project(s) is very admirable, and it is not lost on me
After about two years of not touching the game, i logged on and all my stats were wiped (still had my items though). And the only response from staff i got was basically them saying they don't undo wipes

-Allow and encourage projects that let players check if items are duped
-NOT ban players for merely possessing duped items
Banning people for something while simultaneously making it impossible to know if you’re DOING that something, however, is 100% unjustifiable.
they could give each item some kind of trackable ID + a kind of history for ownerchange so that dupers could easily be found (creating the same kind of item 1000s of times) and understand the flows of the items, how many ownerchanges it has and so on.

Did you keep the set? If that were me (I never did it I always preferred base colors) I would say screw these scum and keep it or destroy it.

I do not play Hypixel so i don't know whats so awful about them and all. But
The way i see it Thomas created ITEM which constantly sent traffic to Hypixels servers (leading to them changing their TOS due to high cost not just his mod of course).

I wanted to chime in to say that I really appreciate the proper subtitles in this video- it means a lot!

- Control of innovations;
- Improves risk management.
Towards the start of the video I was getting super nostalgic as a player that hasn't played for a while. Well made video, interesting comment section since it seems people have strong opinions on hypixel.
Or maybe one not including hypixel, that last response sounds pretty personal. With how petty they can be, odds they hold a grudge is decently high
Yeah, all I did was buy blue mushroom armor from auction house and put it in my museum, never knew this happened
I do have to pay but I have so many since I was contributing from the beginning 😅
@@_thomas when you were asking for a dedicated api key, they could have asked for payment but didn't.
13:00 and it actually works in practice
False. Communism has never been put into practice in the first place. The 3 main things you need to achieve communism are:
-Abolition of money
-Decomidification of goods
-Dictatorship of the proletariat (Rule of the working class. Not in the sense of modern dictatorship, but in the sense of democracy because there is no other way to spread ultimate decision making power to an entire class of people)
Every attempted communist experiment has failed to implement all 3, usually the last one.
