A 'Complete' Distant Worlds 2 Campaign Summarised - Is This The Dream 4X Game?

  • I played the 4X Stellaris-like, Distant Worlds 2! The main feature is that many of the background organisational tasks can be automated, and in fact are automated by default. This leaves the player to focus on what they want to control. However, there are some gaps in the theory that cause issues as our campaign to dominate the galaxy goes along. Check out this complete commentary of 'all' of the campaign!

In the military tab you have offensive missions. If you assign one of those through that menu, your fleet will plan the logistics of that assault - refuel etc and arrive at the location as a unified force. All the immediate manual controls on the map are design ed as emergency controls of a singular ship and not really for large groups.

I'm coming from DW1 and the "losing money but money is still goin up" thing is still there. Income is really only your direct taxes because that is the only thing that is stable. Everything else is periodic and somewhat unpredictable. So here's how the economy works there:
1)Each colony produces money based off population and development level. This goes to the private sector
2)Taxes take a percentage of that money and move it to the state account. If taxes are too high you can cripple your private economy and cause major problems. Also, lower taxes increases growth. The optimal tax rate for overall income is thus ... 0% if you can make enough money through other means.
3)Trade: You can sell resources to other empires. Their private sector pays you a bit of money for resources when needed if you have a trade agreement.
4)Shipyards: Any time a private sector ship is built or upgraded at one of your spaceports, they pay you for the service.
5)Diplomacy: If you know what you're doing selling stuff to the AI (other than automatic resource trade) is very lucrative. I mean things like, selling your "involvement" in a war for millions of credits and/or tech.

It's super cheap and fast to get a non aggression pack with the pirates. Just give them money monthly. Once you have a large enough money say a gift of 37k. They'll most likely accept a non aggression agreement. Also watch their friendly meter. it should be like -2 or -4. They would usually accept after you give them gift of 37k, it goes up to like 12.

You can see the bonus income from the private sector when you scroll down in the finance window. Effectively they buy ships from you which you build in your space ports. The demand for that depends on what you do. If you find resources, then they'll start to buy mining ships to gather those resources (not as efficient as a station ofc). If you build mining stations or other colonies or spaceports then they'll start to buy transport ships, in order to transport the goods from a to b, because the resources are decentralized and do not sit in a global monopoly bank account. In DW1 the bonus income was also displayed on the main screen. I'm honestly not sure why they got rid of that.
Upgrading the ancient starport of this species is a bad idea btw, as you'll not have a proper upgrade for it for quite some time. You can also aggressively annex independent planets with troop transports. Messages will also ping it on the galaxy map, no need to click on show me when you're zoomed out.
Honestly, I think DW:U is still the best 4X space game. DW2 is just not ready and should've been an early access release at best (tag it as that if you want to protest).

I just sneak peaked into this video. Just in case you intend to come back to this game some day. The game has gone through several patches since release and is a lot more playable. You can really turn automation off now, where you don't want it and customize it in more detail where you need it.

I played the first Distant Worlds game and what struck me very early on was that, unlike many other 4X games I've played, the pirate factions aren't just some fringe minority that attacks your fleet or planet every once in a while. They actually fielded technologically advanced ships far superior to that of the player until your civilisation became more powerful and advanced.

My take from playing for about a week now is it works like a real supply/demand economy, capitalism. Even NPCs like money so lowering your taxes will give them more money to buy more ships from your space stations. Your flow is is the deficit and the reserve is the debt or surplus depending where your economy is at.

The games frame rate has improved massively in the last 10 months. I can now play large galaxy, and highest number of stars and 9 opposition factions and the game lays - reasonably - smoothly from start to finish.
IMO it is HUGELY better than Stellaris that abstracts too much for me. I have 1,400 hours in Stellaris and sort of love/hate that game. Love it because it's slick, it feels "space opera" like. but hate it because so very much of the stuff I want to control - is out of my control
"I would NEVER design a ship like that. I would NEVER have a formation like that" Who the hell would.
But Stellaris deals with the META. It's 4X grand strategy.
DW and DW2 are 4X "Nuts and bolts"
And when anything META is abstracted to the point I think "Who the hell would design a ship/formation/strategy like that - of COURSE it's going to fail"
I return to DW or DW 2 where I can decide, right down to every last capability of even the smallest craft - how it works. And I breathe a sigh of relief.
Stellaris has superb AI at the META - grand scale. And absolute IDIOT AI at the nuts and bolts micro scale and no option for you, as the player - to correct it.
Because watching idiot Stellaris AI do idiot things at the tactics level - that I would never do - and have no say in it. Is just frustrating beyond belief..
I'll always prefer the control down to the nuts and bolts level hat DW2 offers over the grand strategy macro wheeler/dealer level of Stellaris.
It's good that both games exist. But while DW and DW2 exist. Stellaris is not for me.

I'm not after shiny effects and what have you, but I do enjoy a good color palette and decent fonts, DW2 looks stuck in 2000s. I absolutely love Stellaris but I completely agree that the micromanaging element of it can be an absolute pain in the arse. What's sad is in the more original builds of the game it wasn't anywhere near as bad as it what it is today. Before LeGuinn, if you wanted your empire to auto maintain itself.... It just would. Now autoing your empire only does 1/3 or up to 50% of the work. I really wish they'd go back on that particular aspect of the game.

The real "advantage" of Stellaris over DW2 is that stellaris has basically infinite different civilizations to play with, the rest is more interesting in DW2.

Yeah I'm not sure why the left out custom empires from DW1.

Except not really, every Stellaris civilization plays mostly the same with minor flavor text differences.

I never watched any of your stellaris videos because I hate that game. This doesn't seem better, from your presentation it seems maybe less frustrating but more boring.
Anyway I largely agree with your points and don't have much to add
