I really loved how there was NO human villain. No one made stupid mistakes and got others killed. That's a cliche in these kinds of movie that I hate, so to see this completely eliminate it was a breath of fresh air.
This is a great point. It's just people working together and trying their best to survive, and that's all it needed to be.
I think Underwater was a great Lovecraft inspired film that encompasses elements of every deep sea monster film like Leviathan, Deep Star Six, The Sphere and The Abyss with the theme of Cthulhu heavily thrown on top ... The action is relentless and all the 'boring character analysis' is dealt with quickly and well enough that it doesn't affect the pace of the film... tedious character analysis is unnecessary - just let the film get into it ... the Cthulhu creatures at the end of the film are really effective and powerful - well worth a watch and Kristen Stewart is very good in this role ... 8/10
Jess is a really good addition to the team, once we're back to a degree of normality he should definitely feature alongside Iain as well.
jess is great but the show is missing Iian
But will we ever get back to the degree of normality? This pandemic is getting more bad day by day.....and experts say that it will still get more worse!

I disagree Gary and Ian are great together. Jess doent sean to find joy in anything super critical I dont like that

Because she said there was no sense of day and night, only being awake and dreaming, I literally thought the beginning of the disaster was just a dream, for about 4-5 seconds.
Within this subgenre. I found this movie enjoyable.
Better than I expected
It’s not a masterpiece by any means, but I really liked it. It’s a simple creature film, that had a slight Alien vibe going for it, and the creatures were pretty kool I think.
I utterly loved this film, really don't understand the hate it gets from some quarters.
It’s a cool film but for the older generation, it’s a recycled plot. I personally enjoyed it for entertainment sake. I love Alien, Prometheus, Life or anything claustrophobic.
@@michaela2870 I liked this more than any of those you mentioned. :/ I always found Alien a totally average movie wrapped in totally stunning art direction, nothing more.
I think her opening dialog is a reference to Chtulhu who is deep down underwater dreaming waiting to be awaken.
Honestly despite this being a very simple story without heavier Lovecraftian elements, it's one of the better Lovecraftian films in a long time. It doesn't revolve around generic cultists, "forbidden sanity destroying knowledge", and stereotypical end of the world evil gods. It's just "oh shit we walked into Cthulhu". I know some of those elements turn up a little bit, especially with the fan theory that the corporation is run by Cthulhu cultists trying to wake him up, but still... It's surprisingly refreshing.
So, all the interesting things that make Lovecraft interesting isn't in this. And that makes it one of the better Lovecraftian films? No. It's surface level at best and just an Alien knock off.
@@keikurono192 And im ok with that. Sometimes dumb mindless thrillers are fun. Too many people boil Lovecraftian horror down into "generically evil cult tries to summon generically evil god and then you go insane". That kind of story has become more cliche and predictable than the type of monster spectacle this movie is. It was nice to see Cthulhu done differently evdn if it was just a creature feature.
@@7graywolf7 But it isn't Cthulhu. It's just generic evil octopus monster. You can't just have an octopus monster and call it a day, you need the cult and the magic and the lost city to make it Cthulhu.
@@keikurono192 Thats not very good use of imagination though if you only follow a strict tfmplate. Lovecraftian horror involves the unknown and thr strange as one of the central themes. Repeating the same formula for almost 100 years has been rather antithematic.
@@7graywolf7 Medieval fantasy has been doing it for far longer and people still figure out ways to make it fresh without betraying what makes that kind of fantasy interesting.
I loved this movie. I saw it in the theater and bought it as soon as it was released. It's a really fun popcorn creature feature. I hope we get more movies like this.
If you like the cthulhu mythos then your get a kick out of this movie. If not skip it, you end up asking questions like "why didn't the bulk heads close", "where's the character arc". You know, stupid questions with no answer that you ask so you feel smart.
I liked this movie a lot. On the platform where they dive, you can see the suits were different sizes.
Good stuff, I just watched Underwater the other night. I enjoyed it. Loved the Cthulu esq monster at the end. Would like to see a sequel. I do get the vibe that there is something more in this film that we're not seeing. Who was she talking about at the start in her monologue? Will definitely watch again and aim to uncover more. Just about to watch your review now whilst I'm in work. Happy days.
Andrew Howard it's been confirmed that the monster IS Cthulhu 👍🏻
Their suits actually would be different sizes. TJ Miller is 6’2” and over 200 lbs, Kristin Stewart is 5’5” and closer to 100 lbs - if they were wearing the same size suits, it’d either be too short/tight to fit TJ or too tall/spacious to fit Kristin (she’d be straddling the suit’s crotch and her legs wouldn’t be long enough to reach the feet of the suit). Because it’s a [semi-] rigid system, suits would have to be custom fit for their wearer. Or at the very least they’d have small, medium, large-type size ranges. Some characters had to scavenge ones that happen to fit them, but TJ and Kristin work outside regularly so they had their own.
You also can actually see the different sizes of the suits at 22:00 when they are all on the elevator. This however mainly concerns height, with width and depth being not so vastly effected because of the installed equipment (like the breathing apparatus and the battery packs) and the helmets on the suits, which all seem to be one size fits all (EDIT: ok, the helmets are definately NOT one size fits all, as the elevator sequence shows the the two women ones are quite smaller then the men ones). So in one way it is correct that Kristen claims to be the smallest and goes first, but the bulkiness of the suit is still a relevant factor.
44:40 A few things. When Norah is on the abandoned station (Which was supposed to be "gone"), you can see a drawing of Cthulhu (The actual first drawing by H.P. Lovecraft, depicting Cthulhu) in the locker. Next to a map with markers, which resemble a stick-figure-Cthulhu.
Also, not all characters go insane. The most prominent example is from "The Call of Cthulhu", the MC who drives Cthulhu back, does not go insane. And to why Norah did not go insane, she didn't fully see him. If you notice or remember, she was wearing glasses at the beginning and lost them during the first accident. Also who knows, maybe she has gone insane and decided to end it there by blowing herself up.
50:00 While this could be handled better, we saw before that the helms can be damaged. The very first helm they pick up has a hole in it, so they seem to be somewhat fragile under certain circumstances. We don't know by which principal they work. Maybe they have to be powered, maybe they are increase in strength under pressure and loose it when in an unpressurised environment. Maybe it's a security-feature to allow quick "evacuation". In the end, it's just a nitpick.
Overall, this was one of favourite movies of 2020, which got better with each viewing. There are a lot more details I could list after watching it so many times.
Great review lads, this movie almost passed me by but I’ll be checking it out now- also good to see more of Jess and hopefully we will see more of him in the future- on a side note poor Issac can not get a break. OTSR 🤙🤙
also I just looked this up out of curiosity, apparently it has been confirmed that the massive creature is meant to be cathulu, or at least a version of him
Thanks for the review OTSR! For me it´s a great sci-fi/horror movie like "It came from outer space", "It! the terror from beyound space", "Them", "The blob" and so on. For me best sci-fi since "Life". Sad to hear it´s the last FOX film, get those FOXes while you can...

As for the film, I enjoyed it. It could defo have been better, and a lot of the nitpicks you fellas pointed out are valid, and I thought the same thing. But overall, it was a decent way to pass time.

39:43 Awesome delivery there, Gary :) In my opinion, though, this film really didn't feel right to have Cthulhu. They could have come up with an original Eldritch Abomination rather than just shoving arguably the most popular Lovecraftian God in the film just because it's set underwater.
If some of the creatures could have had bioluminescent look so we could have seen something but the humans had no idea what exactly they were seeing. That could have helped instill fear when someone got snatched by a creature. Just an idea
In defences of the fire extinguisher scene....the area of impact was much smaller with the bottom edge of the extinguisher vs the entire suit having pressure on it. Maybe I'm wrong but that's why war hammers and maces aren't these huge cement blocks like it's shown in films. A small area of impact does more damage...like those people who lay on a bed of nails.
EDIT: Again I could be wrong but I think it's like when you squeeze an egg vs hitting it against the edge of a pan.

So it's not very clear, but Kristen Stewart's character's boyfriend died while scuba diving, and they never found his body. She sacrifices herself so she can allow the other two characters have the love and life she lost. And her sacrifice allows her to be with her boyfriend UNDERWATER forever.

Ok, I'm hooked, this one really went under the radar, fitting to the setting but not for the sales...
Due to the Lovecraft-connections these creatures seem to be again something outerworldly like so often, even in stuff like the Abyss, Cloverfield and others.
It's a small detail but for once I would like them to just be from the deep sea and evolved on earth next to humans, just maybe older or whatever, just without beeing aliens, from another dimension or similar.
If they would adapt The Swarm for example, we could have one of these for once...

I actually was surprised with how much I enjoyed this movie, if in the trailers they actually showed more of the creatures then perhaps the movie would've done better. Would've drew in more of the Chluthu crowd as well if it was hinted to be connected to HP Lovecraft because that ending gave all the vibes that was supposed to be Lord Chluthu.

probably not coincidence that the last message from the miners trailed off in a way that sounded an awful lot like marker distortion noises from dead space either, also this film really gave me flash backs to the sea world in knights of the old republic where an underwater facility accidentally woke up a giant sea monster and sent the creatures down there kill crazy for some reason
I think of Kristen Stewart is like the female version of a Keanu Reeves.... wooden and awkward in MOST acting parts when every now and then they get a role that “fits” that “wooden” style of acting 😀

I enjoyed this film...thought it was pretty good.
He gives himself the bad helmet because he's the black guy who dies early on, of course.
I remember watching the movie and thinking "Yey... Someone with my name"... 15 min later... "Splat!" 😳... Anyway, fun film and great review 👍
It's an action movie with horror inspirations, so I can understand the lack of character depth and also why you'd want more. Like, just a bit more could get some of these characters out of slasher-fodder territory. It's like they tried to do "Show, Don't Tell" but took the "show" part too literally, scrapping dialogue. It just sortof fed the "action over story" vibe of this movie. Not really bad by any means, just not what I expected.
My main disappointment is that it feels like they wanted a memorable, massive deep-sea monster, so they just grabbed Cthulu off the shelf. They didn't really need the big guy, did they? Their initial designs of these octopus/eel/humanoids could have stood on their own. Could've blown up the drill site to kill a horde of them and possibly their nest, but instead they throw in the massive kaiju to give a big bad to blow up. It also doesn't help that when I went to look into the making of the film, they were just like "yeah, awesome, right? Secret Lovecraft movie!"

I think it’s part of the movie apocalypse where movies are just “meh”, streaming seems to have created Stephen king style stories as in start off ok with a solid story but the second part looses steam and seems a race to get to the end, films released lately seem to just be a race to make a movie from a good idea, shame as if some had been handled with care they could be classics rather than just the “meh” they end up being.....

This movie really disappointed me overall. Not much happens but people walking the ocean's floor and underwater creatures being spooky, until the end. It's okay, just not really good or exceptional. For me, it's just too much of nothing happens overall. I give it a 6/10

@@soricine Yes, I am just making banter as the brittish say. :) I fear singing even a few lines of that iconic devil-maus song would end in gigantic lawsuit. Yeah I have somehow a special place for underwater / disaster movies. Check out "The widowmaker" maybe?
Personally, and some friends feel this way also, the frustration and nitpicking of certain aspects come down to feeling disappointed that the film almost gets there. It takes a swing at being a top tier entry into the sub-genre and you can see all the good stuff just falling slightly short and parts where you wish they'd just spent one more day ironing it out. If it hadn't been so excruciatingly close to sticking the landing, it would have already been swiftly forgotten.
A nice creature feature popcorn 🍿 & beer 🍺 movie 🎥. This movie was better than I thought it would be.

I was super disappointed in this. The trailer looked great, but I just hated this. It wasn’t even that it was derivative it was just boring, and so many parts had me going, “oh this is fucking ridiculous”. Especially around the time Kristen Stewart’s character starts walking on the sea floor.

Awesome review guys, as always! As for the movie, I guess I'd sum it up as a couple of good ideas none of which quite worked. A mediocre mixture of Alien, Abyss, Sphere, Meg, Dead Space, even Leviathan. With a terrific atmosphere, good visuals for the most part, pretty awesome production values, but not much else in terms of characterization and acting with some exceptions. Vincent Cassel stands out, he should have been the main character, really. It would have elevated the movie imo. Also, I'd really like to know what the appeal is of TJ Miller. Not talking about his character, just him as an actor. I really don't get it.

Underwater was a reasonable 90 minutes entertainment, although I'd much rather watch it than Cameron's bloated Abyss. Ive heard Kristen Stewart is going to play Princess Diana apparently.
I hope they come out with a directors cut of this film with 20 extra minutes of Character development. If this movie started off with a large cast that you got to know decently well and the event happened, it would have had a much larger impact on who survived and who died.
