What did I forget with the Ducati 749 project? Is a factory tension tool any better than a phone app

  • Dave has a confession to make... he might have slightly lost track of something. So in this episode he knuckles down to sort more stuff on the 749
Also testing a phone app against the genuine Ducati cam belt tension tool to see which is better
    obsessionengin...
I used this app for belt tension... play.google.co...
Carbon tool trays available from www.jollyscarb...

Liked the bit about the cam belts interesting that the tension had changed just shows it pays to recheck 👍

A Ducati bulletin for 4-valve engines specifies that recommended tension for installing fresh-out-of-the-box new belts and acceptable range of deviation (105-115 Hz). It also states that if you are going to reinstall a set of used belts they should be adjusted to 85-105 Hz. It further implies that used installed belts can be left alone if they measure above 70 Hz.
Those belts are tightened to spec but gave a little tension over time even not run. You can look at them like semi new ones.

    Merry Christmas Dave!
Something I learnt when servicing my 996 was that the OEM clutch slave cylinders are prone to leaking. Can highly recommend anything by Oberon - easier pull and fantastic build quality.
Would also recommend a brand new OEM oil pressure sensor - again, not sure if they got it right by the times of the 749, but they increased the thread length in later iterations of that part for the 916 bikes and helped it to stay put 👌
Looking forward to maybe bumping into you at Rapid bits next year!

The clutch slave cylinder on my 2015 1299s was a leaking piece of poo from the get go . I replaced it with CNC Racing item . The problem was solved ! .

Six months? Whoaaaa, slow down speedy! I just today, Christmas Day, got back to a fabrication job I only started a mere 2 years ago. No, really. See, I started it, but then took ownership of an old house and em, the roof needed replacing, and the garage door needed replacing, then the paint, and the plumbing, and the landscape, oh, you know!! Life happens.

It's just called belt tension. There's a few free ones and I'd imagine they're all similar

Merry Christmas Dave. Another great video. At least you didn't wait 6 months between releasing the vids! What app did you use for the belt tension? When I did my monster I could only find a guitar tuner but was a bit fiddly and didn't hold the value. As always look forward to the next instalment.

Dave, your race data spec/logging spread sheets are usually impressively comprehensive, so a little workshop log sheet on the 749 taped/tied to it, obviously would've helped. Although of course your video evidence was available! This model and its bigger brother was said to have received some work by Ducati in making them easier to work on compared to the 916 series, is this evident?

Many 999 owners use thin layer of 3m bond. I recommend replacement of all rubber/steel valve cover washers and mine need new valve cover special bolts and fasteners. After spending 200 on new valve cover hardware there is no more oil leak. Worth the extra expense to properly maintain the engine. Thanks LT Schneider!!!
