What is that metal cap you used to hammer it? Nifty lil tool!
I suppose you could flip the shaft and pull each cap downward - then the needles only fall into the cap.

Yup, that's the way I usually do it. I also do the opposite by dropping the joint through sometimes
I usually do the opposite when I am doing it on the ground or don't have a vice.
If it's really corroded, press is necessary right?

A rag to keep the clip from taking out your unprotected eyes.
They are C-clips, not c-clamps
