Nice on Mark. I think you just summed up why I've had mine for 17 years and courting, and why for the last 5 I've struggled to find anything I enjoy as much. Which included 15 months of Focus RS ownership.
Great video, eventually these Subarus and Evos will rocket even more in price when people remember how amazing they are as drivers cars. So much more visceral and involving than modern cars but not something you want to drive in traffic everyday. The perfect garage or track toy.
I had a P1 in 2001 and its one of the best if not the best drivers car I have owned. I bought a 2005 STi in lockdown with the intention to do what the owner of this Type R has done. Kudos to him because sourcing original UK parts for a 15 year old hard so I cant imagine how difficult its been to get hold of parts for this JDM.
Great video. I’ve driven it a few times and there’s not many super cars that would touch it down a back road. Glad Al made you drive it hard so you can truly enjoy how special it is.
A proper bucket list car for me this, my dad owned 3 different versions of these about 12 years ago 👌 The lastest was a version 6 v limited with all the toys that one has
Superb video and choice of car. Love classic STi's. I own a V5 Sti Type Ra Ltd and have done since nearly new (lived in Tokyo for many, many years). These are outstanding cars and as you pointed out, they were truly special back in the day. Mine has been my daily driver until this year and is now only for weekend blasts. I have literally no idea how the owner has only done 95 miles in his in a year 👀 One correction, there were 1000 of these Ltd cars made, not 71, and they were not made to order but you did need to place an order for one. I have a stack of Japanese literature on these cars confirming this.
Great video! Nice clean car! I had a freshly imported 1995 version 2 sti back in 2005 and had it 8 years, was a great car but had to get rid of it when we had our kids! Got an M140i now as kids are older and hardly in my car now 😂
Great to see such an immaculate car. My v3 type-r isnt so original anymore, has age related issues, but its a keeper. Its done over 240k now but works well when pushed :)
Good video Mark. They were ahead of the game back then and they are a fantastic a to b car on country roads. The reason it feels quicker than yours is probably because it is. Much lighter car than yours and the turbo on the WRX will be more aggressive than yours plus the Impreza isn't carrying a big 3.0L lump. If you get the chance, have a drive of a Impreza P1. Awesome drivers car.
In 2003 I went from a Mk3 Golf GTI (nice looking, nice to drive but slooow) to a '97 Impreza Turbo wagon. 100 hp more and wow, I'll never forget my 1st drive. I remember the gear box felt very agricultural, like you get on a tractor, amazing. The seats and driving position felt so good. Incredible in the wet too. I longed for a Type R or a P1. Still have a soft spot for Subaru. Could have bought a P1 10 yrs ago for £5k. If I recall, the type R didn't have ABS.
Excellent video Mark, well put together and interesting subject matter. More like this! ;) Hope you're keeping well, it would be great to see you again at some point.
Nice clean example lovely car i have a 99 uk gc8 turbo 2000 and just had the engine rebuilt fully forged bottom end with new v7 heads just ran the engine in so she will be remapped soon nothing like a old scooby :) nice video 👍
Nice video Mark! I have a 2019 STI Limited and must feel like a luxo barge compared to this largely "stripped out" version compared to my car. Less weight, better power to weight ratio and more visceral feedback. Thanks for sharing! Had to edit just to ask, who would give this a thumbs down?
Incredible cars, owned 3 classic imprezas imported a v3 sti many years ago and it was a rocket ship compared to my previous uk turbos. I will own a type r one day. Ps cheers for the disklok loving the st
Thank you for posting👍😎 To my knowledge the type r is a limited 90s model. R meaning retna. The type r had rear wiper and power Windows etc of creature comforts, the Ra' was 4 door wynd down Windows weight saving model. If I had a choice... The type r cos it's rarer than a type ra
I use to have a v3 sti non type r, thing was a animal, was sset up for fast road on coil overs aswell so it handled amazing. lookin to get another next year :)
It's almost as rare as my '97 WRX-based Tommy kaira M20b wagon! This is one of the greatest cars ever made. Period. BUT... that car is missing the later (and much better) dual-pot ventilated rear brembo brakes, which make a huge difference. And the brake pedal of the 2-door is as mushy as the 4-door. They all require a brake master cylinder brace to stiffen the pedal properly. Then there is the sad old 16s the car is running. Then there is the catalytic converter which must be removed - and instantly adds 30BHP. Yeah - you really don't want an original car if you like driving the thing. The sad thing is this car is a garage queen, and not a proper car. Cars are for driving, not sitting idle.
I have a all original 99 V5 Sti GC8 tucked away in the garage, such a great car. The grip levels are amazing (Bridgestone Potenza's), the way it rockets you out of one corner to the next is breathtaking sometimes. I'm never selling it. Like Mark said, these were embarrassing many super car drivers over 20 years ago, and probably a few M car drivers still hahaha.
Once you learn how to drive a subi they really are fun and quick. Keep revs up if you want instant power and torque, slow in and fast out of corners (hold speed around a corner instead of trying to accelerate into and through understeer) and no need to go up past 7000rpm as you are out of the torque band (on stock motors). Also get that trail braking in late to get the weight forward on the front wheels to help get the back end through the corner without too much understeer. Well that's how I've driven for 20 years in them without breaking anything or crashing!
The P1 is a Version 6 Type R with DCCD taken off and ABS added on. Also suspension tuned better for UK roads, different wheels and all Sonic Blue as far as I am aware. I own a Version 4 STi, I would prefer the Type R over a P1 (I prefer the JDM original, abit cooler).
Wrong. A P1 is a version 5 sti 4 door mechanicals in a 2 door shell. That’s why there’s no dccd. It’s exactly the same mechanically as the V5 4 door jdm sti.
Great video, enjoyed that. I had this exact model, V3 Type R. Unfortunately they have very weak bottom ends, my bearings went after 2 weeks of ownership. And it's not a one off, this literally happens to them all eventually. I had it fully rebuilt but never really trusted it again after that and ended up selling it. In hindsight I really regret that now, wish I'd kept on to it when they were relatively cheap!
Know the feeling. When you can hear it knocking on cold mornings but you try to convince yourself it’s something else haha. I had mine blueprinted but after that I was so nervous about ragging it. Now I’m older and wiser I’d have way more faith in a built engine.
I have had an RB5 for 7 years and a Spec C type RA for a year and never had a knocking bottom end, i just change oil every 4k miles or so.. Have had head gaskets and rocker cover gaskets done though.
They need very regular oil and filter changes and to be warmed up and cooled down properly. Do that and they go forever. My V5 STi RA (granted later classics had stronger engines and internals) has done 130,000 miles on the original engine and turbo with only oil changes every 3-4000 miles, uprated fuel pump, a couple of clutches, and 2 timing belt and associated bits and pieces. For perspective, I used to track and touge it in Japan regularly.
machidaman Exactly. I’d assume OP’s 2 weeks of ownership were after 5 other people had beat the hell out of it with poor maintenance. There was a piston slap issue around v3/4 though. My WRX is on 142k and my V6 STI is on 80k but both were looked after properly.
Potentially it hadn't had the best life, who knows, but research suggests that with the earlier STI engines it was a case of when and not if they start knocking. Later engines were for sure tougher! Just look at the amount of companies out there making a living pretty much from Subaru bottom end rebuilds 😂. Still wish I'd kept it, I was young at the time and had in mind that another rebuild would cripple me financially haha.
I hated everything about mine in standard form, barring the spool 🤤 Changed mine several times before selling last year, never used it but regretted it already - chap in Belgium owns it now😰
Great video Mark, refreshing change. Did you get the fizz when you drove it fast? I had a STI before I moved out here to Spain, before I bought my RS Edition I wanted a STI Type R but the Spanish regs don’t allow JDM imports, I mean I love my RS, but I do miss the scooby experience. There’s an old chap I know here with a few that are on English plates including a P1 and STI Type RA!! But refuses to sell, he can’t say no forever though.
They dont need to do such little mileage. I did 500miles in mine this week to Cadwell Park round the track all day and drove it home with no issues. It's 7 years newer but havibg owned classics is basically the same thing but with less rust worries.
Road tax is relatively cheap for 90s JDM imports. Around £260 a year. Fuel wise I average 18-25mpg in my Version 4 STi (5,000 miles a year in the UK). Which again is similar to most 300bhp cars.
Road tax in my Impreza is 2quid a month more than my mk3 focus RS or Megane. Fuel w8de they get high 20s whichbis the same as similarly powered modern heavy cars. Basically you are incorrect.
Had a few evo’s and always missed the classic STI after the honeymoon wore off. I settled with a V6 sti in the end (which I’ve had over 7 years). The twin scroll on the evos makes them very linear power delivery and the steering & pedals are so light they kind of remind me of driving a more modern city car. Always found the Impreza a lot more mechanical feeling and the lag makes them feel faster (which is fine by me these days). Wouldn’t mind having my Evo 6 RSX still though, prob worth a few quid to sell and by a nice V6 STI RA
Can we all appreciate the owner for actually driving, letting Mark drive it how it was supposed to be. Massive credits for not having a garage queen!
Great video! They really don't make them like they used to. Modern performance hatches, golf r etc are boring compared to those old Japanese cars
Nice on Mark. I think you just summed up why I've had mine for 17 years and courting, and why for the last 5 I've struggled to find anything I enjoy as much. Which included 15 months of Focus RS ownership.

In fact, as a Daily Driver they are awesome.
Tiring on a long trip!
@@Chris.Davies my Spec C RA is certainly no good as a daily driver but my old RB5 would have managed it reasonably.
The best Impreza's were from the mid 90's to 2000. Thanks for sharing this video.
I had P1 near enough same engine TBF! but mine put out 416 BHP I swear it would keep up with my RS6 to 130ish ❤
I had a P1 in 2001 and its one of the best if not the best drivers car I have owned. I bought a 2005 STi in lockdown with the intention to do what the owner of this Type R has done. Nice bit of drum and bass there, Mark!
That is in amazing condition, stunning in every way. What a treat to be able to experience it, and drive it how it was meant to be driven.
Hearing that ej and still being able to hear those exact engine note on my GDB is amazing
Great video. I’ve driven it a few times and there’s not many super cars that would touch it down a back road. Glad Al made you drive it hard so you can truly enjoy how special it is.
Oh he did! What made the final cut was relatively sedate.
A proper bucket list car for me this, my dad owned 3 different versions of these about 12 years ago 👌
The lastest was a version 6 v limited with all the toys that one has
Just a limited that would be😉
Been an icon for me since Gran Turismo on the original PlayStation in 1997 when I was 19 - also loving the 'period' tune at the start.
Great video, nice to see these cars being driven properly. Subaru made some very special cars back in the late 90s and early 00s thats for sure!
Simply perfect.
Superb video and choice of car. Love classic STi's. I own a V5 Sti Type Ra Ltd and have done since nearly new (lived in Tokyo for many, many years). You misheard, I said 1,371 were produced 👍 I'll happily stand corrected on the absolute number though.
Great video! Nice clean car! I had a freshly imported 1995 version 2 sti back in 2005 and had it 8 years, was a great car but had to get rid of it when we had our kids! Got an M140i now as kids are older and hardly in my car now 😂

One hell of a car ... Great stuff Mark 👍👍😎
Looks like a riot to drive, love all the little details around the car
awesome car and love the drum n bass
Couldn't get more 90s wida da tunes too bruda respec throwback to da good days
Like the video Mark along with your others, it's like your well suited to do these car videos and reviews !
Incredible cars, owned 3 classic imprezas imported a v3 sti many years ago and it was a rocket ship compared to my previous uk turbos. I will own a type r one day. Ps cheers for the disklok loving the st
Such a clean example there 👌 building my type r atm 😁
A guys Dad from school had a 2 door STI. Was pretty awesome back in the day.
You can see the quantity in the build i had a earlier 92 240bhp wrx import.
Thank you for posting👍😎

GM8 not GC8 if it’s a 2 door
@@nickbradbury347 Good job it is a 4 door then Nick and not a GF8 wagon ;-)
Brilliant car what a machine great video mark
I really enjoyed this, thank you Mark 👌😜
Yes yes yes, love this!
Great video and a great car......... of course it's faster than yours😂 do you want an STI t-shirt now👍👍👍
one of my friend had one 15 years ago, i did not know this version is so rare.

My dream car I buy a white type R v4 :))
Wow amazing
Great video
Genuine is where it's at
Still a great video this.
I had a type ra sti v4 vltd. Was so quick but ratios meant motorways were unbearable.
I was 19 years old when this bad boy was released 💨💥 The clutch is stiff because it’s not hydraulic mate!
It is hydraulic 👍
Like nr. 100
本当にセクシーな車だったなぁ✨
The 4 door chassis is stiffer than the 3dr.
A special car but I'm not sure I could restrain myself to 90 miles / year .I doubled that on my first Sunday out of lockdown😃
They dont need to do such little mileage. I did 500miles in mine this week to Cadwell Park round the track all day and drove it home with no issues. It's 7 years newer but havibg owned classics is basically the same thing but with less rust worries.
I did'nt have Mark down as a Drum N Bass enthusiast lol
It had the right tempo and tone for the montage and I could trim it to the length I needed. That it sounds a bit late 90s was a bonus!
So much more character than the usual bland German cars
The road tax and fuel on these need owners with deep pockets.
