- How to test your Washing Machine Water Level switch
Most all washing machines have the same set up for the water level switch. If you are having issues with water leaking or overflowing this will fix that problem. This will work for a Kenmore, Whirlpool, LG, GE, Maytag and Samsung Washing Machines.

Excellent, thank you so much ❤
Many thanks for your simple water level switch test. I repaired my dishwasher in no time.
Hi man, thank you for this great simple instructional video. You save my money. This video is worth 2023 also.❤❤
Glad i watched your video i was going to call a repairman opened it up and the hose to the switch had come lose and off put the hose back on no more problems thanks you saved me some money.
Thanks for watching. Just uploaded a new video! Have a fabulous day.
One of the few Enlish spoken tutorials ! thx
You saved me $650, tube is all it was. Off level and shakes and bangs sometimes, so tube must of jumped off.
I blew in it, heard the click. Reattached and started and is fixed! Thank you!
Thanks brother Harold, you made my day! I now have idea on how to do it myself. You see, service centers of my washing machine is about 35 kilometers from my home.
Thanks so much - nice to see something that works simply and doesn't need some IT tech to analyze and repair.
Hi Harold! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me and your viewers. As an appliance sales associate, what I just learned will me provide better service to my customers.
MY 1995 Whirlpool water level diaphragm switch tested bad because when empty, contacts V & P showed about 3 ohms resistance instead of zero and sometimes would over fill the tub onto the floor! I FIXED IT by spraying electronics contacts cleaner into around the plunger/spring area and lightly blowing in and out on the hose to get the switch to click on and off then waited for the spray to evaporate and now it reads Zero ohms and no longer over fills!
Good luck! Keep the old ones running!
Thanks for sharing. 👍
man I love getting game from old timers they get straight to the point, great video
Thanks for the confidence! We old people try to pass along what we know. But not everyone will listen. Have an Awesome day.
Great knowledge. Wished the video already available in 2009 when my washing machine was broken (water overflow) and i was on tight budget 😂😂😂
Thanks for watching 👍
Great video. My washing machine is currently working properly, but as I was doing laundry earlier I found myself wondering just how it senses the water level. I knew it couldn't be a simple timer, because the low water pressure in my area makes it take FOREVER for the tub to fill. This gave me a very clear explanation of how it works.
Well, you’d be wrong if you think that the pressure switch is all that it goes on because it’s not the case for the washers in use for the last several years. If yours turns when it’s filling slightly back and forth then it’s sensing how heavy the load is. It’s definitely not reading the pressure switch solely. Think about it you have small, medium, large and max load dial settings . The pressure switch is an on/off switch. There’s no multiple levels that it reads. There’s an on/off at one level and there’s an on/off at a flood level and that’s it.
@@condor5635 No turning happens at all until I close the lid after it's done filling, so I guess I'm back to not knowing how it works.
@@brennyn I don’t mean agitating turning. I mean little, small turns with faint clicks and directions changing. This is the motor sensing how heavy the load is. Combine that with the first pressure switch setting being achieved or not s how it determines the water level is ‘correct’
Nothing quite like the rush of smug satisfaction I get from fixing it myself...thanks,,,!
🤣🤣🤣 I know what you mean 🤣🤣🤣👍
thank you so much simple and professional explanation
Great video! My problem is probably rather simple, but I have a tendency to make my problems more difficult to solve than they really needed to be! I deep cleaned my Kenmore series 80 washing machine just this past summer, and without really knowing what I was doing, I assembled it all back together without paying much attention to any of the parts you mentioned in this video. Just a couple days ago now, while my washing machine (Kenmore series 80) was either draining, or on its second spin cycle, I was sitting on my front porch and I heard water forcefully rushing about 15ft away from me, in the exterior wall of my mobile home, where the drain below my kitchen sink is located, and I freaked out! I went over to the spot where I could hear the rushing water, and I noticed that there was indeed water puddling up on the ground along the trailer skirt, and water could be seen dripping down some of the siding where the kitchen sink is located. On further examination, I then noticed that water was soaking the carpet along part of my bedroom wall, where it must have traveled in and along the interior wall from the kitchen sink, and into my bedroom. I have no clue whether the problem is due to something wrong with the washing machine, or if it's simply due to a partially clogged drain pipe underneath my kitchen sink. I would greatly appreciate any help that could assist me in solving the problem. Am I wrong to believe that I may have accidentally damaged something when I deep cleaned my washing machine this past summer, or might the problem be with the drain underneath my kitchen sink? Because the drain in question drain was clogged fairly recently, but the landlord himself was thought to have unclogged it for the time being.
I would like to thank anyone and everyone in advance, for ANY information they may provide to assist me in solving this very annoying problem! I cannot stand the smell caused by the water that had backed up into my kitchen and along my bedroom wall. The sooner I can solve the drainage problem, the sooner I can rid my home of that nasty smell!
Wow. Thank you so much for this video. You just saved me from buying a whole new washing machine! God bless you!!
Happy it worked for you.

Exactly what I wanted to know. Short and sweet. Thanx!
You’re the man! Helped thousands of people
Thanks Harold! After watching your video, I cleaned the pressure hose and my washing machine is not overflowing! It had soap scum that I removed with hot water.
Happy to help. Thanks for watching and have an Awesome day.
Thanks Harold! I appreciate the video. Nice and straight forward.
That's great. I hope it was helpful.
Thank you for this video.. this is just what I needed Sir 🙌🙌🙌
My washer water keep running until I plug in level switch and it stop. Thank you. Save me ton of time.
Thanks for watching 😊 happy to help 👍
You are the man!!!!! Thank you so much dude I freaking love you friend.
You are awesome at teaching stuff!!!!
Thank you 😊
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!
Outstanding video. Excellent troubleshooting and explanation
Thank you
Hello, and thank you for the great video. I'm having a different problem. Both low and medium settings fill the water up half way. High setting fills it up all the way. How can I get the low setting to fill the water up lower than the medium setting? Thanks!
Clean the soap out of the level hose at the side of the tub.
Thanks for posting this - my pressure switch I have to blow like hell to get it to click. Looks like you are not having to blow nearly that hard. I did order it before I saw your clip and I think I did the right thing. It also failed the high contact test on both first and second stage, totally open. Medium contact test passed zero ohms both stages. Empty contact test was odd, showed zero ohms on no air, zero on first stage and open on second stage.
Thanks for watching 👍
@@HaroldJackson You are very welcome, now if I may ask - were you blowing very hard to activate that switch?
@@Dannysoutherner no
@@HaroldJackson Thanks, that pretty well confirms the problem.
Brilliant and simple video. Thank you.
I’d like to understand how the pressure switch plays into how high the water fills. The circuit board does not totally read this pressure switch as an on off to fill. It does some crazy agitation to kind of tell how heavy the load is as well. I wish I understood the logic of how load weight and pressure switch all plays together
Thank you Sir. Did all your steps and washer still over flows. Have to keep trouble shooting. Hate to buy new switch and still have issues.
@@dragonslayer990- is your switch good? Gently blow into the PS tube and you should hear one or possibly 2 clicks. That is the switch closing/opening. If you don’t hear that it is probably bad. Checking continuity across the terminals will also tell you if it is working
Are the water valves properly opening and closing? Not stuck open?
now i know! thank you sir, simple and direct instruction! 😊
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video my friend!
thank you smart man
Well done exactly what I needed to know
Thanks for watching and have an Awesome day 🙂
Thank you so much!Great video.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it 👍
Have you ever done a video on replacing the shaft seal on a direct drive transmission? I have two machines that leak a little oil from that seal. I also have one machine that the seal is good on it but it leaks a little fluid from the weep oil near that seal.
It is not that hard to do. Most people don't do this repair. The time it takes to do this repair makes it cost prohibited. The only time you would do this repair is if it is under warranty.
Loved your tip. Works for me.
thank you much for your video and for your time
Thanks for watching and have an Awesome day 🙂
Hello sir i am from india ..5 years this this field any jop offer your company sir
great video, exactly what I needed!
Nice tutorial sir god bless I have learn more ideas , , last day I repair damage sharp automatic Washing machine and I've just confirm that the board is faulty, and now I replaced another one a new board and when I test to run its working.then after a few minutes the error is display e2,how can I fix this thank you
Could be a clogged drain or slow pump. Sometimes the propeller spins on the shaft. Or it could be the computer. Unplug for 30 minutes and plug back in and try that. Good luck. Have an Awesome day 😊
Thank you 😊
Thank you very much sir 💖💖💖
It's a very helpful repair my machine
Thank you for watching 👍 I hope you subscribed to the channel.
@@HaroldJackson yes of course, I did it,,, subtribe it
Will that cause it to not spin or cycle if turned by hand to spin cycle?
Great. But you didn't say if the machine does not fill up all the way. I have seen others to adjust the screw on the back of the diaphragm and or/put oil in the tube hole for the diaphragm to lubricate it. Thanks. That about covers all of it.
If you connect a hose to the switch and blow you should hear a clicking sound. If not the diaphragm is bad. Change the switch.thanks for watching.
Could you do a video over fridge repair. My fridge has ice all over the inside. I have to keep cutting the ice out.
What type of Refrigerator is it? Side by Side? Freezer on the top? Freezer on the bottom?
Thanks a lot!
I watched one video ... the dude suggested to change sensor ... if it doesn't work then change pcb .... 🤦♂️
Thanks for watching 👍
Nice vid, what are your thoughts on a washer that agitates when immediately turned out without the presence of water? Water level switch, ctrl board?
Thanks sir. Nice video.
Great video 👍🏼
Very nice video👍
How do you if your washer level is adjusted properly? What is the correct water level during the wash cycle? How do you check the water level during a wash cycle? Some people run it empty and stop the cycle and open the door to measure the level from the bottom of the door or the bottom of the drum. But what cycle do you run and when do you stop it to check the water level? What should the proper level be? Can’t find the answer anywhwre
Thank you so much, very helpful!!
😄
Happy to help 😊
Mine trying to agitate while the water is running into it
My washer overfilled once but it shut itself off. I had the door open and the washer overfilled but the water turned off but it was after a gallon or so spilled out. It hasn’t done it again. I’ve run it through all water levels and the water shut off. The tube is clear and no holes and the switch is operational.
Thank you sir
My washer only puts a couple gallon and that’s all . We cleaned the inlet valve screens . Please help
Great simple instructions for someone without a multimeter! Now, my problem seems to be that my top load GE is NOT filling enough when on extra large or super for the water level. It's a second hand machine and I washed a big blanket for the first time and set it to super and the fill seemed to stop prematurely. Could this video help me resolve that problem or am I looking at possibly the water level switch itself being defective?
Thanks!
Thank you. Check me out at www.gettr.com/user/harold_jackson
Thank you for the video,my washing machine didn't fill the water, when I test the inlet ,I find no power reach to the valve,do you think it is pressure switch problem????
No it's not the pressure switch. Check the lid switch.
@@HaroldJackson Thank you for answering.
Hi,I think the lid switch is ok,because the drain spin function is working normal.but still the machine didn't fill water...I am confused what do you think???
And air conditioning and refrigerators also sir ..can you help sir!
The switch door it's ok but. Not wash and the water is riffil not cut off. Sir?
Hi Harold. It is an interesting video. I would like to know, at 1:10, there is a chamber where the water level tube is connected to: can the water flow upward through the tube? Or is there a membrane that blocks the water for flowing upward through the tube? I was trying to blow the chamber hole, using a tube, i found it is not completely free. Thank you. 😊
Water can go up and in the tube but it should stop. If it continues to go to the top you have a leak in the valve or the tube. Have an awesome day.
@@HaroldJackson Yes, I found the water should not go until the water level switch. Thank you.
Ok I have a 3 year old Speed Queen that now wherever you set it small, medium, large, auto fill, it fills to the top setting.
It locks so you can't even open it to check it unless you hit cancel for 3 seconds and it shuts off. I would have never known maybe unless
I wanted a pair of sneakers to soak so I hit cancel it shut off and I noticed it was filled all the way instead of the medium setting. Maybe
been doing this a week? What do you think is the problem. I don't know about taking the thing apart. Is it an expensive fix?
Sounds like it has soap in the hose going to the level switch. You can clean it out by blowing through the hose from the top. Good luck. Thanks for watching and have an Awesome day 😊
Accidentally left the selector switch on low water level but wanted the higher water level. Switching to the higher level continues on low and does not switch. How do I fix it so it will go to high?
Dear sir
I want to install Washing machine at terrace, but plumber said Fully Automatic Machine needs pressure and at same level we have our 2000 litre water tank
There will be two arrangements 1) water pressure from the supply of Corporation
2) supply from the Water tank
How should I solve the problem? Really fed up with washing machine installation.
Regards from India
Thanks fir you help
Thank you for watching! 👽
Just because the diaphram is not broken means the switch is good???
Shouldn’t the contacts on the switch be checked for continuity before and after blowing in the tube to see that it is working properly electrically?
Never had one go bad before. 100 percent of the time it has been the diaphragm.
Hi just want to ask mine is not stop filling up with but the hot water is stop only the cold water hope you can help me
why my washing machine now always go to 66 liters not like before and error U11 code appears but the drain plug is all ok and no blockage at all ..water drains normal
Sir my Kenmore washer is leaking and it has shutoff and there's a PE CODE any help please
But others posted ..no blowing..into the the switch
Thank you!!
Hello, my washer doesn't drain all the way. I don't think it's the pump because it does drain some, just not all the way. And when I set it to "no spin" it will start to drain a bit and the suddenly stop as if it's completely done draining. Any thoughts? Thank you.
I need more information. Is it a front load or top load washer. And what brand is it?
@@HaroldJackson LG. Front loader. And I tried all your bits of advice in this video. Don't think it's the water level sensor. Thanks for your help.
@@kbkb6569 front loads are hard to diagnose. I would start with cleaning the drain pump. Check the propeller on the pump and make sure it's not loose. Clean the screen filters on the file hoses on the back of the washer. Good luck 🍀
@@HaroldJackson Much obliged, Harold. I did all but the file hoses. I ordered a new pump, too. I'll keep ya posted. ;-)
Whats the difference between 3 and 4 terminal switches.
Will this switch stop the water from filling correctly when it's in the Rinse cycle? It fills correctly on the Wash mode but on the Rinse mode it puts like 1-2 inches of water it the tub with a full load.
Its probably your water inlet valve or a clogged water hose.
Harold Jackson I don’t think it’s a clogged hose as I get hot and cold water with the temp settings. Inlets valve as in the one the hoses attach too, correct? So could it also be possible that the control switch or pressure switch is bad?
@@HaroldJackson Exactly 2.5 inches with settings on Full load during the Rinse Cycle. Use to be about 8 inches.
I cant say for sure what the problem is without being there and doing test myself. But most of the time if it's not filling with water it's a water valve problem If it don't fill in the amount of time set on the computer board the timer will time out and stop filling. I would take the hoses off and clean them and check the screens on the water valve. Other than that it could be the timer. It could also be a bad computer board. Good luck. Let me know what you find out.
My washer doesn’t stop fill. What should I do?
Check the fill hose, drain hose and the pressure switch hose. Good luck.
Thanks
Does it works in front loader?
Yes. It's harder to get to. It's on the top right side. Front loaders have a little computer chip that could be bad. Question, did you use the wrong soap? That's will cause issues. Good luck.
What kind of soap do you mean sir?
Wrong soap? What kind of soap is wrong soap?
you saved me from my untie. commnded

Question.. does the diaphragm always make that noise when blowing into the tube?? Have a Samsung, when I blow into it it doesn’t make the noise but it does stop the water flow.. thanks
The new switch will not make a sound. Thanks for watching and have an Awesome day.
