  • Poul and I conducted a little test, to show you that you have to be careful with the placement of you Wah pedal and your high gain pedals. We looked at a whole bunch of Power Supplies

    Here is a link-list to Thomann in case you want to buy any of the Cioks PSU's... since Poul made the trip it is only fair to list them here. Please use them, I get rewards points and it makes making these videos for you so much more fun and rewarding if I get stuff for it !!!
    I am not saying BUY IT, but if you want to buy anyway.... use the links...

    One of the most INFORMATIVE videos that I have watched. Thank You, I am building my 4th pedalboard "the right way", and this video is helping me with my next adjustment investment.

      Can you ask your power guru about separating a project studio from the house ground? I am having a hell of a time with something in the house causing my amps to hum. I've tried everything from Humx, different outlets, everything on one outlet, not running guitar and power cables paralell, shielding (guitar does not have to be plugged in) shielded USB cables, variac, moving monitors, large battery sources etc etc and I just can't get rid of it. I think there is some appliance that is always on, like a dimmer switch or something that is causing a racket. I've even gone the evidence cable route and it's still buzzing away on all my amps. How do I fix dirty house power? If I play the same amp in someone else's house, it's quiet as a mouse. I'm not sure if this is a clue, but all I have to do is plug a one spot into my wall, and the amp hums LOUDER. I don't have to have a guitar plugged in, no pedals, not even a cable plugged into my amp. It hums louder if I plug a one spot into the outlet (I don't even have to plug the one spot into a pedal). I've replaced the one spot and the same issue.

    Lmfao! I felt that. The nervous/anxiety noises from Poul with the smile and eyebrow wiggle as he holds on to the fragile solder joint, trying to keep it from breaking as it gets twisted all over at multiple angles. 6:15

    If wanna make your wah way less prone to any nearby transformers or power cables in the floor/walls either:
    A. Fit a Fulltone Mu-80 inductor, they come in a mu metal shell to block EMI interference.
    Or B. Use an inductorless wah like the Crybaby 105q, or Hotone Bass Press.

    26:30 Maybe it was me, but it seemed like he was holding the wah much closer to the Yankee than to the Ciokolate. Don't get me wrong, I still believe the Yankee was noisier, but he was borderline laying the wah on the Yankee while hovering the Ciokolate.

    What if the wah is away from the power supply but connected to it, through 9V cable and audio jack?? I'm looking at the HB Powerplant Tuner for a basic home set up, but right now I have like 4 or 5 different power supplies for each pedal, would like to cut that down to 2 (my Digitech RP500 really needs its own supply).

    Hi Henning, very informative. Would applying guitar cavity shielding tape (or paint) to the inside of the housing help in reducing the hum? Opening and modifying the device would probably void any warranty though.

  • @matzer8846
    @matzer8846 9 років тому

    Technically it is much easier to shield the electrical part of the electromagnetic wave than the magnetic part. A "simple "gold foil casing" will do (think gold foil PUs, copper foil or graphite lacquer shielding of your axes electric compartment) => no electrical hum from neon lights and no radio interference ...
    But the magnetic field does not care too much about this shielding and you would have to use a heavy Mu metal casing. So you are better off reducing the noise source by using transformers which keep their stray magnetic field low by using a good ferrite core ... typical a toroidal one ... and moving away a little helps too.

    Rf noise aside, a good power supply will have "clean power." This can better be determine looking at the dc output ripple on an osilloscope, preferably bothe unloaded and loaded.

    I have a mooer power supply and the cabinet is the same as the joyo, voodoo lab and carl martin, all made in china. Then they have different features and connections. On a side note, some cheap chinese di's are imported to my country, they are exactly the same and here they get 3 different brands put on them, but they are exactly the same product sold by different importers

    I notice I get a lot of hum from cables that are within my true bypass looper when they get near power supplies, do you have any tips for this? I also notice it where by board is wired in stereo (with two patch cables between each pedal) these are also much more sensitive to noise! Any ideas?

    I've had terrible hum with my T-Rex Chameleon for years. I use it tandem with the DC10 and the DC10 is silent while I can only put the Chameleon at a specific place one foot away from the pedalboard without awfully annoying hum.

      I haven't had this problem with mine. You might have a defective unit. I don't have my wah mounted on the board but it is fairly close to the side of the board where the power supply is mounted and it doesn't seem to cause this issue

    Sorry, if my question doesn't make sense, but I have to ask. What is the benefit of having a transformer inside of the power supply, instead of using one with an adapter? Isolated outputs?
    And also when you put power supplies that close, don't they interact with each other?
    Thanks.

    • @kimhansen6384
      @kimhansen6384 6 років тому

      It does actually make a lot of sense. When SMPS supplies came out they were accused to introduce other kinds of noise (hiss), but probably they have got that under control.
      It could have been nice to compare some SMPS supplies in this kind of test to see if they made noise ´another way´.
      Power supplies also have an internal resistance that affects the ability to deliver power quickly. I am not sure which type is best in that respect. In HiFi preamps that ability
      matters a lot.

    No new generation Voodoo Lab PP3/PP3+. No Truetone CS series. No Strymon. Basically, you only tested the DC7 with the switching power tech here, right? Not sure about those Chinese cheapos, but who cares about those. But you're obviously favoring Cioks here, it's kind of blatant.

    • @Jonathan_Doe_

      Ranjith Hegde Nope, tubes are actually great at rejecting EMI interference, which is why Mig Fighter jets continued to use subminiature tubes long after they were obsolete to make them impervious to EMI attacks knocking out their controls.

    If you just keep the power supply off the board, like a wall wart with a daisy chain, doesn't it solve the problem? I haven't had any benefit of using a voodo labs 4x4 over my RadioShack wall wart, using daisy chaining, and all analog pedals...
    Then, if you just have one digital pedal, just keep that in a separate wall wart and then it is isolated?
    It just seems like all this on-board power supply business seems like making a mountain out of a molehill at and extreme cost.
    Then you also have to get a pedalboard that can fit a psu underneath it,m which is a pita, or waste space on top of the board... Etc etc etc. Here I am trying to fit my stupid Voodoo Labs 4x4 under a damn board. PITA I tell you.
    Then you also need a bigger case for the bigger board you are now using, when you could have gotten away with a flat board!
    If you need a distributor for cleanliness, why not use a one with an off board wall wart?
    It also seems that all the digital pedal manufacturers are cutting costs by not including an isolation transformer within their devices.
