  • I've been a big fan of Cioks power supplies for years now, so it was a real treat getting to sit down and nerd out about the new Cioks DC7 with my good friend Christian from Cioks.
    This fully isolated power supply uses refined switch-mode technology to give you 7 dedicated outlets with up to 660mA each, plus a USB out and a 24v auxiliary out for extension modules, making the DC7 the perfect choice as the core fuel provider for your pedalboard setups.
    In this video we get nerdy about all the DC7's amazing tech specs, but we of course also hook a ton of pedals up to this beast and unleash some crazy futuristic soundscapes.

    This video was huge years later! Saved me the extra funds of not having to also buy a Cioks 4ce along with a DC7 purchase. Didn't realize how many pedals a single DC7 could power! Way beyond 7 pedals! Good to know I could most likely power 11-12 pedals off of that alone! Heck yeah

    Yes! Love the DC7! And the DC4 in fact. For me, I’ve got the 7 powering the 4 for all 8 (technically 9, but that last one is my LR Baggs Para DI) power hungry pedals (mostly all 9v except for one 12 or 18v I believe). Although, thinking back now after watching this, I could’ve just daisy chained one of the DC7 outs for that 8th 9v pedal. Oh well. Anyhow…even with the additional power supply, I still haven’t heard any noise whatsoever. 👍🏽 totally glad I found CIOKS and am currently planning on getting the 7 for my wife’s soon to be put together pedalboard. Also…really liked the soundscape you randomly put together. 👍🏽

    Im using the DC-7 with vintage Boss pedals that require 12v. I have a 80s Mesa Boogie 50 Caliber+ 1x12 combo and the entire pedal board is going into the front end. I can use 2, yes.. TWO overdrive pedals into the dirt channel and there is ZERO noise!! Absolutely unheard of with a vintage Mesa amp!!! F^^CKING AWESOME

    I noticed you have the Brian Eno app, not surprised. Also, I have 4 of the pedals you've got in this demo,

    I recently redid my pedalboard and my pedal guy was like:" Hey, we just got this new power supply, want to check it out?"
    So happy I did! Super easy to shape this power supply to your needs and the board (10 pedals) is dead silent!! And I never ever have to worry about having to sell it because I can just expand on it later. And all of this awesomeness packed in to a super light and compact package. They really did knock it out of the park in this one.

    This looks amazing! I might end up getting one of these to replace *two* Voodoo Labs bricks. (This might also get my board under weight for flights!).
    Next challenge, Cioks team: Mission Engineering’s 529, which is absolutely amazing for a small board (I can power four pedals off a phone charger usb stick for an hour plus). It’s such a cool device and means I can busk without power (or when I sit in for a song in someone else’s band). Can you make something similar that will accept variable voltage? For my acoustic rig I’d love to use the Headway EDB-2 preamp but it needs 18V and too much current for the 529.

  • @JessieThorne886
    @JessieThorne886 5 років тому

    I've been using the Cioks Big John (the old version with blue typeface) for forever; it's probably time I upgraded! Quick question, though: in the video you guys hook up several pedals to the same output - isn't that usually considered a no-no in regards to noise? Or does it not matter with this kind of power supply?

    • @shaft9000
      @shaft9000 5 років тому

      There is some more to it, but the basically you can run drive/fuzz/trem/wah/boosters and such on daisy cables with minimal worry. It's when you daisy digital and all-analog pedals from the same PSU outlet - this can create unwanted noise.

    My board has a Digitech Whammy DT on it that's 9V and requires 1300mA. I am a bit dumb with this stuff, but the DC7 wouldn't supply enough amperage for that pedeal, right? Or am I wrong? I appreciate you smart people's help.

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  4 роки тому +2

      If you use one of Cioks own Flex cables (Parallel Adapter Flex to be exact), then you can couple two outlets together from the DC7 to double the amperage. So if you couple two 9V 660mA outlets together, then that will give you 1320mA in total, which is enough to power you Whammy pedal. But it will of course cost you two outlets on the DC7, so it depends on how many pedals you need to power in total. But technically you can power a Whammy via a DC7 😊👍

    • @thepedalzone

      I honestly don't know. It's just on the verge of being able to, if that mA rating is spot on, but the actual draw is often a bit lower than what's labelled. So you can always give it a go. The worst thing that could happen is that your GT1000 won't boot up, and then you know you will have to use two outlets.

    • @mattsouth6930
      @mattsouth6930 3 роки тому

      Yes, the DC7 is more powerful, but also a lot more versatile. The Zuma is a great supply, but most outlets are dedicated to 9V, and I believe have a max draw of 500MA, and it has two outlets that are variable voltage. So the Zuma works well for running many standard low draw pedals and a few exceptions, where the Cioks DC7 can run a large amount of 9V pedals, as well as many pedals that are either very high current draw or have variable voltage requirements, so the DC7 is considerably more versatile.

      Yeah, easily. You just need the right Cioks flex cable. They also make Flex cables that can accommodate 3 pedals from one output. Just remember to not mix analog and digital on the same output. It can create noise issues. Low current analog pedals tend to work best in a daisy chain, and then keep the digital stuff on their own isolated outputs. That's at least a nice rule of thumb.

      See my comment above to Rhowin Dacut. For some, they wont need the versatility of the DC7, but for others it will be the only applicable option. All around, even if you don't have pedals that require this versatility, everything the Cioks does it does very well, and we can all benefit from the low noise floor and expandability options.

    Typically i am late to the game, also really old and now even balding a little, i now know which psu to get. Just one thing that is bothering me and it stems from having both played at and been working as a sound guy in small venues, this way of attaching your psu to this kind of pedalboard.....while a good solution when it comes to the mounting in and of itself, but that spot is the worst place for ANYTHING electric! Given that the pedal board usually sits pretty much at the front of the tiny stage, with people standing, dancing, DRINKING BEER, RESTING that beer....you know where i am going with this....also a reason why i never thought the open construction of pedal train etc are a good idea but with this psu it is even worth, because how can you put it there and then have all your LEDs and switches right there ON the floor?
    Now for musicians like us, making slow, sad, depressing music, hehe, the whole dancing and beer swapping 'round might not be an issue, noone ever danced to my music, except when i made music for a dance choreography, äham, but for others ... i don't know...i always loved the Trailer Trash design where the power is safe, hidden inside the frame, with only the main outlet coming out of the board.
    But it seems they stopped production which sucks big time, they also only ever had one EU distributor afaik.....
    Anyway, that is my long ass take on that little mounting bracket which definitely seems like such a practical, good idea.

    Same tech as the Strymon power supplies, except you get 9 outputs on the Strymon

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  5 років тому

      Indeed, but every output on the Zuma doesn't have switchable voltage selectors. And the DC7 has more power per outlet. And the DC7 is smaller. All depends on what features you need 👍

      @MrRadialdrift 5 років тому

      @@thepedalzone True, but my point was he is claiming it's new tech. Switch mode tech is old, its been in consumer appliances for a long time and has been around since the early 1900's.

      @@MrRadialdrift - Don't think Christian claimed it to be new tech. Its use is fairly new within the world of pedals though, which he also explains. The tech was seen as being too noisy for pedals before, but CIOKS and Strymon have found ways of filtering out that noise, so it's usable with effects pedals :)

      @@thepedalzone Well, effects pedals have been using switch mode for at least the last 20+ years with very minimal noise, so again not sure what he is talking about it being "New" to effects pedals. I presume the noise he is talking about is when you are trying to daisy chain a switch mode, which is what makes the Dunlop DC bricks a pile of crap. So claiming switch modes are noisy is not accurate, under proper use they are perfectly fine.
      All Strymon, Cioks and Gig Rig have done is made a fancy daisy chain switch mode, which to be honest is over priced for what it does. Sure its a new product, but the tech is not. You can get a Joyo power supply for about the 5th the price that uses Ciosk "Old tech" and even the VITOOS PS which are about $40 are great value, they have 3 groups of isolation instead of individual, but if used correctly, you can save $300. Musos just seem to get ripped off when it comes to stuff like this.

      Actually a lot of newness under the sun with the DC7, if you cared to dive into the technical side of things. But hey, I get that PSUs aren't exciting for everybody. It's shame though, because they are pivotal for a great functioning rig. Hope you find something out there that excites you today, makes you smile and makes you want to spread positivity. ThePedalZone i love your reviews and your positivity along your videos. I’m a lot into technical side of gear, and a owner of a PP2+ by Voodoo Lab. There would be so much to interact with, when it come to power supply. Especially with voltage control for analog pedals. Nobody have been able to create something new on that side, that don’t mean this power supply is not good, or that it don’t worth it price. But having a great quality power supply, even if it’s not the priority of everybody, is now common, since 10 years.

      VL's dodgy "boss-spec" connectors alone made me want to trash it. Won't get into how it didn't agree with two of my (better) pedals. Cheers!
