The warm in the water part is actually pretty realistic. In antarctica you can have -71 F air tremperature on average. But the water is around 28 to 50 degrees F. So if you have a space age wet suit the water is the better place to be so long as it insulates you from cooling out in water, as it is warmer by a wide margin.
I mean... water freezes. Air doesn't (outside of lab conditions). So if it's liquid, it must be above freezing. So if you think about it from that perspective, it should be intuitively obvious that what you say is true, air is a much bigger problem when it comes to frigid temperatures.
Manu's dialogue alone leads me to having a headcanon that the corporates in this universe are lab-grown and refined iteratively to have as little humanity as possible.
Subnautica has always been so impactful because it’s the only game that truly gives a glimpse of what it’s like to dive. Which despite it being a nightmare for many people I’ve always found to be so incredibly peaceful. Coasting weightless through the water, kept warm by your wetsuit, nothing to hear but your own breathing and the fascinating array of underwater noises, and nothing to think or do other than just take it all in. It’s wonderful.
6:22 Freezing _is_ less of an issue in water. If you've ever gotten out of a pool, especially an outdoor pool, you'll know that evaporative cooling can be a real bitch. Now imagine that in −50°C weather and water temperatures barely above freezing, with strong winds and frequent blizzards... oh, and _hailstorms..._
I know some folks didn't really like this game as much as Subnautica, but I really liked it being a bit more story focused. It definitely doesn't have as much as replay value or capture that same sense of wonder as the first game, but it's still an enjoyable experience.
As someone who is making their way through Below Zero: Trust me, it only feels like you're going break-neck speed at finding stuff because it's the very beginning of the game. Once you get through certain tasks and locate certain things, the discoveries slow down quite a bit. And if you're like me and get lost VERY easily, you might find yourself stuck more than a few times ^^;
1:36:00 In the original game on the aurora you could find a PDA showing that love has become more business/contract focused. It us both funny and dystopian
I'm so happy to have a straight up series in this game. I was, like probably many at the time, so obsessed with the game that I watched every gameplay video and leaked creatures and every minimal story update that I eventually got lost in the sauce. All the youtubers that were known for their subnautica series didn't really play the game when it was fully released, and no series on youtube I could find did it really any justice.
Those scanning animations have flashing lights more intense than any other game that gets introduced with the recurring flashing lights warning of this channel.
You should scan the signs of other employees on the walls of their rooms. They will tell you the information about them just like when you scanned the sign on the table.
Water in the Actric is actually always at -1.8*C due to the fact that it cannot go beyond its freezing point unless it, well, freezes, which means that outside it can be as bad as -70*C while the water will always be just -1.8*C. Of course we don't know the salinity of water on this planet, but it's unlikely to be too salty to make it possible to have an even lower freezing temperature than the Earth's seawater while I don't think that it's pure water and the freezing point being +0*C is also unlikely
I’m really glad you’re playing below zero! I love your subnautica series and it’s so fun to get cosy and let this play. It makes me less afraid to tackle the game myself in some ways!! Edit: 1:34 omggggg this reminds me of the dude breaking up with his partner from the first subnautica game lmfaoooo the way Alterra is set up and how all their employees act is sooooooo creepy and like ultra capitalistic dystopian! The voice actors are great but damn I thought this lot would’ve given us some humanity for Emmanuel oof
“It did not lead him to meditate upon his frailty as a creature of temperature, and upon man's frailty in general, able only to live within certain narrow limits of heat and cold; and from there on it did not lead him to the conjectural field of immortality and man's place in the universe.” -Jack London, To Build A Fire
So excited that you're playing this! I really think the story and characters are way more exciting than the first game. Can't wait to see you react to some of the events.
No but really - I've been trying to find a good below zero let's play for years. Most ytbers covering it are either trying to be """funny""" with crude humor and general stupidity or the quality of their gameplay and general appearance is fucked up. I love your chill commentary, so happy to see you playing Below Zero
Short nerdy tech info about temperature: It is worse above the water because of evaporation. The energy/heat loss from that will drop skin temperatures below 0°C - where as fluid water cannot go below 0°C without high pressure or freezing solid. Your suit seems to be able to handle temperatures above 0°C.
it's a common theme that in the near future, humanity is caught in the power-struggles of megacorporations. alterra, weyland-yutani, earthgov, uac, etc. alterra pretty much control several planetary systems, if not entire galaxies. least the torgals were somewhat independant.
A tip that seems like it'd be helpful for you, since you read the logs so often, in the settings there should be an option to have the game pause when you open the PDA
You are correct that was Morse code. …- - - … S O S It’s a distress call first used in 1908. That’s probably the eeriest thing to hear in the depths. A human distress call from somewhere in the ocean.
I wonder if his channel is just a name or he really is a librarian. It’s something I’m debating going back into studying, I wanna give off the same energy this channel gives. Calm, comforting and a bit mysterious, I dunno.
I think the reason the Xenoworx PDAs don't have as good of a voice as the Alterra ones is because they're running an older OS or older version of their OS. I recall that Alterra acquired Xenoworx at some point, so I think this may explain it from an in-universe perspective.
Be careful of the void. Unlike the main game, it is too easy to accidently step into the void. Those creatures that dwell there are quite unsettling, nevermind the biom itself😢
With how water tends to circulate quite rapidly over the planet, it makes sense that water would carry some residual heat from another climate, or perhaps from geothermal activity. 4546b is known for its rumblies
Absolutely loved Below Zero, it was such a comfy game and had some really nice biomes. I even like it more than the original. Only thing I didn't really like was the voice acting
Allegedly, Subnautica was originally going to have the ability to choose your player character and Robin was one of the choices. I might be remembering that wrong though...
I watched a youtuber named Anthomnia cover the early access builds of this game, and you could really just see the entire development process, so here's a couple fun facts about Below Zero! (i won't spoil the story) The plot and story of this game changed a LOT. like a LOT A LOT. felt like every early access build game from a different universe where the writers had completely different ideas, it was wild a lot of biomes (like the twisty bridges you saw in this vid) as well creatures you'll see later were actually cut content from subnautica 1! a lot of subnautica concept art contains stuff we now see in below zero some people have their complaints about below zero's gameplay, (and they're valid), but i do have a feeling you're going to enjoy the story
from what ive heard, the issues people have with below zero are a) the voiced protagonist right after a game with a practically silent one, and the slower feeling of the game since they shrunk the map so much, they slowed down the movement so it still "felt" big and to be entirely honest, i can feel the "slowness" just by watching you swim around a little bit.
The one flaw in this game imo is how opening the pda to read text doesn't pause time. iirc there is a setting (or was it a mod...?) to pause with it open,at least, so that's nice that someone thought it was necessary.
Is it just me, or am I among the few that actually DON'T like it when reading the PDAs pauses time? I think the pausing makes it less realistic. (I know this is a game, but I'm watching this as an engineer, so I may be over-analysing things)

Yes! One of the properties of water that allow life to thrive on this planet! Beautiful.
That's −57°C in the air and −3 to 10°C in the water for the rest of the world.
