Need Inspiration? Buy More Gear?

- On this episode, Rhett and Zach discuss the relationship that they each have with the guitar at this point in their careers. Making a living doing the thing you love is great-in fact, it’s something that so many players aspire to. But it changes the relationship between player and instrument when the instrument is a source of work. How do they stay excited about their work? And how do they get excited when they’re in a lull? What keeps their creativity flowing? These are big questions, but our hosts are both having their own renaissances with their guitars. And-surprise!-it’s because they’ve both come into some new key pieces of gear.
Zach reports that he has been rippin’ totally sweet Metallica licks on his sick new ESP LTD Kirk Hammett Signature Series KH-602. He’s a longtime fan of the band-and has conveniently fallen back in love with Kill ’Em All and Ride the Lightning-and says he’s wanted a Hammett signature guitar for his entire guitar-playing life. When he saw this one at Nashville’s Guitars To Be Played, he fell in love with everything, from the skull and crossbones fret markers to the Floyd Rose. And you know what? The Floyd Rose isn’t hard to set up. This guitar, Zach says, is kickstarting his “love of the guitar again.”
Meanwhile, Rhett has been enjoying his new Soldano SLO-100 head and matching 4x12 cabinet, even if he does keep the cab a few flights below his control room. He’s stoked about the story of Soldano, who he admires for being one of the early boutique amp builders, and has been playing this new 100-watter all week.
When it’s time to dip a rig, it’s hard to find any faults. No spoilers, but it’s a nice one (and an easy gig load).
And in the shill zone, Zach talks about the importance of running a brown box for owners of older amps and talks briefly about the difference between the Brown Box and a Variac.

Dude! Thanks so much for shouting out the channel, and of course for coming out to the Colorado Railroad Museum. Was super fun! Glad to pop your "blow the whistle" cherry. :D
And hey! I do guitar music stuffs over here sometimes... :D
I love seeing vintage and boutique guys getting into high gain stuff. There’s a ton of awesome gear on this side of the fence. Wait till they discover a 5150 block letter that we used to be able to buy for 600$ lol
Dude, my first tube amp was a used 6505+ for $200 🥲 inflation is crazy
The Brownbox has been great for my needs. We have one of the oldest power grid's in our area of Florida and can typically see 126V coming out of the wall.
I hope you know the impact this conversation could have. I have been in a weird in-between of intermittent success with my band after our debut EP release landed us on some bills with multi-platinum-selling-rock bands. The pressure of trying to repeat some version of that success with the next body of work has left me playing guitar “to relax” less than ever. Nice to know I’m not alone.
Good tweak on the 470K resistor for the bridge pickup. Very clever.
Zakk you are so right about forgetting why we picked up the guitar. I put my pedal board away several years ago. I have been dedicated to playing clean and focusing on technique instead of focusing on spending hours adjusting knobs. My wife bought a Wampler Tumnus Deluxe several months ago. I hooked it up and now it is pemanently on lol. The tone chase is real.
What we call "practice" and the application of "theory" are called in to support the development of newness. Renewing is real just the acceleration of learning which is relatively detectable to the student. The student to teacher relationship does not require two people. The giving an receiving should be shared in the process of learning.
22:35 This is exactly why I’ve never wanted to rely on music for my income. Playing, writing, recording etc is a major part of turning my brain off especially when doing improvised music. It also helps to have extra “hobbies” to get separation from life. Powerlifting has also done this for me.
I’m also big on buying gear for inspiration. I just bought a Soma Lyra-8 and Moog Subharmonicon to work on spacey ambient/drone music.
Totally agree. Music is my thing to unwind. I can’t imagine it being my job. Probably start hating it.
After playing for 20+ years, I just bought my first Strat. Customized it through the Fender mod shop and its absolutely reinvigorated my love of playing guitar. Its showing up on the demos for all of my band's new material. GAS can be good.
After hearing Rhett’s lament about not buying that vintage fender deluxe a few years back, I found a decent deal on a 67 with all original caps etc and splurged for it. I’ve never been more inspired to play, been playing for hours at a time at night. Find the gear that inspires you. Thanks to you guys for putting the SLO on my radar.
About the fun aspect and picking up a different unexpected guitar, I never thought I was an S style guitar guy but I picked up a Charvel hardtail super strat and it is one of the most fun one of my guitars to play.
Congrats on the new gear and tat. Very nice ink-work there. You’ve started down a path, just so you know. I’m on my fourth, with a fifth coming this summer.
Cool to see you have a KH -xxx. . Mine is a Japanese KH-2. Fantastic beast.
Zakk congrats on the new guitar! I relate to every single word you said about it. Frankly, every time I pick up the Schecter metal guitar after living in a world of strats it lights that same fire 🔥
Goodness UA-cam needs to get their act together... I haven't seen you guys show up in my feed for months, thought you were on hiatus. Excited for this one!
It's not quite finished yet.. but I did an initial assembly ... more than a mock up but a, set up and intonation to test the build on my 'Stellarcaster' 3 quad rail hum buckers wired like a les Paul with coil split p/p 500K vol pots, 500K tone pots with .047Uf orange drop caps, a bypass sw splits off the 5-way to activate the neck and bridge p/u's together regardless of the 5-way pos. I need to wire the led's for coil in circuit indicators using another sw for power and using the second half of the p/p sw in the vol pots.. lol I figured that out with little thought just the realization of how the thing worked.. added and upgraded a lot including roller saddles and roller string tree with a titanium nut.. the name reflects the paint along with the overall theme of space field stars and planets paint job on body and head stock ..2K clear polished to glsssy shine...so gorgeous ...oh did I mention that the pick guard is a hand made stainless steel and custom extended for all the additional pots and switches.. it works ...barely and sounds great . pots are half fried and tone don't work.
I enjoy these videos conversations. I have enjoyed music all my life and I am 62. I am a hack guitarist but you know what? I play and enjoy it for myself because my uncle who played told me if I play, play for myself, you are the only one who needs to enjoy it. I still do. I have written songs. They are on Reverbnation. I listen to all kinds of music. Jazz, rock, folk, guitar music, country. I have never been bored of it and if I was, I am scared of myself lol. Not having that musical interest for me cannot exist. I enjoy the nuances of sound and distortion and what happens when I pitch shift it. I enjoy the way predelay interfaces with it. It is a playhouse of options. I dont buy pedals because I am bored. I end up selling many lol. But I love the experimentation of it. Thanks for talking about it and if I could afford a Soldano 30 I would. They are fantastic sounding amps
The brain cannot be turned o "off". Distracting ones self from engaging in an activity which brings more negative stimulus than positive may be aided by a deliberate diversion but the mid always follows "turned on".
It's music that inspires us to play, not gear. It can be new music or old music you re-discover or just something you love that you haven't listened to in a while. It's a blast to play Metallica, so no surprise that you have been vibing on it. Bikes are cool too....I just got a new Cervelo Aspero recently cos road it getting too dicey and a new rail trail just opened up recently near us. Just got back from Rotorua in NZ this morning too, amazing trails over there.
New gear won’t necessarily make you better. But it can absolutely be inspiring. I recently got a Marshall Origin 20 and an Epiphone Les Paul Custom a couple of days apart. I’ve absolutely played more and started learning some new techniques and new songs since. I’ve become a better player since buying them.
I think I'll need to try the 470k resistor on the bridge pickups for my Tele and my Baritone Tele!
Hey. Zack got a nice shout out from Lindsay Ell and John Bollinger on her recent Rig Rundown. Very cool.
Anyone know which pedal board this is?
21:15 #1. This is why I don't allow myself to get into gaming. I know it would eat all of my limited free time. I would prefer to have something to show for it. A drawing or painting or recording. To be ready for a performance. If i start playing video games, ill never get anything done. I know myself.
2. No matter what, I run scales and play for at least 10 minutes a day even if it's the end of the day before i can pick up a guitar and I'm completely wiped. Because I'm obsessed. Im obsessed with playing the guitar. And I wasn't always. And as much as I hate to admit it, sometimes a new piece of gear can reignite the spark. Thats what happened for me. I got my first Stratocaster and everything changed.
3. Find a way to become obsessed with the guitar again. Maybe it's just finding something new that you desperately want to learn.
4. Definitely disengage sometimes. Just go watch something mindless on Netflix (or a great documentary!) If you take a little break, most of the time, once you've gotten warmed up, you'll find you're playing better than before.
I've been wanting the Brown Box for my Bandmaster, but at $459 cad, it's hard to justify.
Just get a variac…they’re super cheap.
Yes, PLEASE call your followers and subscribers "Dipshits!" Definitely do that. Like, for real. We'll ALL agree that it's fuckin Awesome.
Do that shit.
what a cool idea for the mod for a serus t
I personally require a minimum of 8 pedals and didn't buy a pedal board before arriving at that number. Mow, I'm considering the possibility a board for 10 pedals but still manage to swap out to reduce to 8.
Zach: “I have a lifelong injury and this is a really challenging thing for me. I’m gonna open up and talk about it.”
Rhett: “Cool shall we dip a rig?”
😂
My whole life lol
What kind of pedalboard is that?
An N scale locomotive about the size of a picket knife(model railroading) can cost as much as a guitar pedal.
Hey Rhett, do you watch de Tour?
The first recorded incident in history of any preference to a ‘side of the road’ was the Romans… much later the first law passed, relating to this, in any part of the world was in England in 1773… both of those were the left. So anyone else is clearly disobeying the standard.
And the language you are discussing the correct pronunciation of is English, which should indicate who has the last say on its correctness.
I say all this in good humour, your channel(s) are all awesome, keep up the great work.
And to my American friends reading this I do concede that the way you spell ‘thru’ is much more sensible.
😘😜
The Raging Toners in a good name
Simply learn to have fun while using a tool. An Electric guitar can, is, and should be a "fun" tool of expression. Fun does not exist without expression.
😂 9:04 He's not wrong!
Thanks for trying! 🤗
Beautiful tattoo, Rhett.
Dipshits for life!
Rhett, it’s not pronounced “Soldano”, it’s “Soddano”.......
Same experience with tattoos the longer it takes especially with shading it gets worse and worse
It's not so much that it's painful as annoying. Lol eventually you wanna slap your tattooer. Stop that!
@@ryangunwitch-black nah never hated him for it. He gives me back a piece of my body everytime I come there.
Offset guitars look backward to me. The smaller body guitars are usually more ergonomicaly balanced.
Which is the "L" you say?
Lol, tattoo outlines are fine, it hurts but you can own it. Shading tho…. Suuuux. It’s like someone is peeling your skin, from a bad bruise, with tweezers made of pure electricity.
I hate shading.
Tattoos are a stamp of... (insert term here). They make me wonder why. Shouldn't a tattoo artist pay the recipient for the ad space?
Is it dipshits? Can I be a dipshit?
LOL, yeah you're weird, bro. I'd happily give a 10 for a rig that deserves it. You know it goes to ELEVEN, don't you? 😊
Rhett with tattoos is like a guitar with no strings.
PEAVEY!!!
