    thanks Donnie I just got me a 2024 yz250fx I just got done with the break in part I am going to warm it up today and change the oil I am new to Dirtbike racing in trail racing coming off of my Honda TRX 450R I chose the 250 over the 450 YZ because I just feel like a 250 is more then enough power. and I am thankful. I did the Jason rains Yamaha Demo Ride last weekend road the 250FX and I liked it so much I did not even get on the 450YZ I am a B level racer on a ATV but this is totally different It might take me a little while to get use to it I will probably run C class Definity not D class until I get use to the balance of the bike and get use to the tighter trails on dirt bikes and then I will move back up I am 46 years old I will ride the North Carolina hare scramble series. this is a new chapter for me it will be race number 279 when I start in 2025 Part time about five races a year I am done with winning championships I have 4 all together 3 in Dirt bike Motocross 92 93 on a 1988 Yamaha YZ 125 and 95 I had a 94 Honda CR 250 and switched to ATVs in fall of 95 and 97 I won the 4 stroke B championship on a 92 TRX 250 X so I raced every 4 stroke ATV Honda ever made thats the Crazy part 300 EX 400EX and the 450R stayed of ATVs until Now I have a combined 46 wins in everything looking forward to it .I remember Scott Summers I use to love watching him Man handle that Big XR 600 in those Tight GNCC Trails back in the day LOL

    Just an FYI, in case you're interested, Gold Plug in MT makes a nice neodymium drain plug and RecMx has a nice billet oil filter cover. They have a location in Mooresville.

    I just bought a 24. Loving the bike and getting the oil changes down thanks to your help. Two questions:
    A) I saw when you flashed the app that you had 46 hours on the piston but the recommendation was 12:30 - what’s your thoughts there?
    B) do you torque the bolts to spec or just eyeball it?

    How often have you done the timing chain? the manual is calling for every 12.5 hours, if you do, change it could you do a video on it? I like your delivery of content. There are no videos on this common maintenance procedure for the newer 250s which I found surprising since there have been so many failures of the timing chain, and it is such a regular wear part

    • @DirtBikingwithDonnie
      @DirtBikingwithDonnie  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for watching! I haven't done a timing chain yet. If I do I will make a video. I have 8 close friends who ride YZ250FXs and 50-75 others I race with in the various series and we've never had a timing chain failure. I put 140 hours on my 2021 bike and only shimmed the valves. I know others who have 200-300 hours on these engines with nothing other than valve shims and oil changes.

    • @DirtBikingwithDonnie

      I have run synthetic before but prefer the Yamalube AP with the Rekluse clutch. I think frequent changes and keeping the oil clean is more important than expensive oil. Just my opinion. You can’t go wrong with synthetic if that’s what you choose.

    Is it that important to check the pressure bolt after changing the oil ? When i’m done with the oil change, i start my bike and check if oil is seeping out a bit of the pressure bolt, if it does, all is good :)

    • @DirtBikingwithDonnie
      @DirtBikingwithDonnie  Рік тому +1

      I should have mentioned that in the video. The manual says to do it but I’ve done so many oil changes that usually don’t. Loosening the bolt just verifies that you haven’t done anything incorrectly that would inhibit oil flow.

    Hey Donnie, big fan. 😁
    I just got a brand new yz250fx and I don’t know hat to do about the break-in process… I’ve read online that some people don’t do anything, others take it slow for a bit, and others use the manual. What’s your thoughts?

    • @rufus324
      @rufus324 5 місяців тому

      I just did the first ride on mine. Instruction from my engine / suspension guy was to put an easier ride on it with out maxing out rpm’s but also don’t baby it. It needs to go through the rev ranges and the rings needs to seat with the cylinder. I think some over think it, ride the bike, put a couple heat cycles on it, don’t baby it to much but don’t bounce it off rev limiter and you should be good

    • @DirtBikingwithDonnie
      @DirtBikingwithDonnie  5 місяців тому

      I’ve always just ridden normally during the break in period. I don’t get near the rev limiter but I don’t get there very much ever. The most important part of break in for these engines is doing the oil change after 1 hour. The screen and the filter will be covered with goo (maybe assembly lube) and you’ll want to get that out of there. Thanks for watching!

    • @DirtBikingwithDonnie
      @DirtBikingwithDonnie  Рік тому +5

      Yeah, 12.5 hours for a piston is a strange recommendation from Yamaha. I guess if I was on the rev limiter all the time it might make sense. I put 140 hours on my 2021 and it never lost power, never burned oil or any other issue. I shimmed the valves once. I bought all the parts to do the top end but never did it. I have friends that have run them well over 200 hours on the original top end. I will likely buy a new bike before it’s needed on this one.
