Barrett .50 Caliber Overview (M107 and M82 A1)

  • The Barrett .50 caliber anti-material rifles (NOT sniper rifles) are truly icons in the firearm world. These man portable cannon allow an individual to have 10 rounds of earth-shattering .50 BMG ammunition on tap to destroy enemy equipment, vehicles, and so on. With too many movie and video game appearances to count, the Barrett .50s certainly get lots of due attention from the public. But what are these rifles really used for? How do they work? What's in the box? Well, let's have a look!

Wrong, it was not developed as a long range rifle, it was developed as an anti personal rifle shooting targets like cars, airplanes, helicopters, communication equipment and so forth. There are better more accurate tools to snipe at long distance.

You can get cheap ammo, but whats the point in that. It just hurts the gun. I use a good round at $89 for 10 rounds, yes pricey, but accuracy is important when you can really place a round with ridiculous impact. Im getting the 107 and would have complimented my M99-a1 from Barrett, if it had not been taken from me along with many other guns from a stupid wife with a 911 trigger happy finger calls the popo and says your crazy. I lost $125k in guns and initially a very serious charge later on that was very expensive to get aquitted. Now gunless, headed back to Arizona for good, and picking up my 107 shortly there after. The guy is right about the gun. Its a must have for any one who appreciates firepower. Its so much fun to pull out at a range, and squeeze a round out to have everyone stop and look. Thats worth the price of admission all damn day long!

The M107a1 is capable of MOA accuracy with match grade ammo. Improvements include: match barrel and chamber, barrel bushing, straighter and lighter aluminum upper, better trigger, better muzzle brake. I have have a lot of time with the m82, m82 cq and the M107a1. The M107a1 is a sniper level weapon with good ammo.

Wasn't the muzzle break on the M82 supposed to be belled like that to allow the gas and all around force from the round fired to catch in the break and pull the rifle forward to reduce recoil, even just a little bit? I have a buddy with days of range and field experience with both rifles and this is what he's told me.

If I had the money, I honestly don't know which I'd get: one of these, an Accuracy International AS50, or a CheyTac M200 (in obligitory .408 CT, of course). I love the .50s for obvious reasons, but the CheyTac is such an amazing weapon that defines the word "precision;" more impact force at 1000 yards than a .50 BMG, supersonic at 2000 yards, and if I recall correctly, sub MOA accuracy at 2000 yards as well (where the hell they tested that, I don't know).

***** For the cost and difficulty of maintaining the rifle, it's ridiculous for a regular civilian to buy one. Of course it's you're right but it would be idiotic to buy one unless you had the money to become proficient with the rifle by shooting thousands of rounds down range, and those rounds become very expensive.

I bought my 82A1 in June of 1990 and have had fun shooting it in FCSA 1000 yard competitions. Being an early rifle, mine has subtle differences from yours. Also, mine came with two 11-round magazines. My spec sheet from Barrett has 11-round magazines as standard.

I love the introduction you gave on this video about the Barrett 50 Cal rifle. It is so true... There is nothing practical about owning of one these rifles outside of the military. They are far more costly than just about any other high power rifle on the market... In fact, you could buy about 6 to 8 top notch rifles of one variety or another for the cost of just one Barrett M82A1 or M107A1, Barrets cost about the same as the price of a new motorcycle, they are a burden to carry around, shooting ammunition out of them can be like trying to warm your house in winter by burning dollar bills in the chimney, they require equally expensive optics if you plan to tap on the into their intended potential and you need a BIG plot of land to shoot on if you actually intend to reach that potential. So all in all, Barrett 50 Cal rifles are almost absurd to own, but boy are they fun to shoot and boy do they get all your other shooting buddies jealous. Lastly, nothing else commonly acquired makes a hole on a target like a 50 Cal... Not 408 CheyTac, not 338 Lapua, not 300 RUM, not 300 WSM and certainly not anything less than these last few.

Nothing about this rifle explains the $11,000 price tag aside from consumer demand and government contracts. Having fired one myself I was not impressed. The Ergonomics are average at best and the accuracy is nothing to write home about.

    • @tfbtv

How ergonomic is a 35 pound anti material rifle supposed to be? Or rather, how ergonomic could it be?

what is being argued here. its heavy, kicks like a mule and is one hell of a fight stopper. love it. we had one in our unit and once we spotted our target and engaged with the 50 they would flee the battlefield. nothing like hiding behind a murder hole and hitting the fucker on the other side at 1000 meters out and watching a red mist and dirt fly everywhere really took the fight out of them.

I saw a recent interview with Mr. Barrett where he stated he didn't make the rifle for military use but for recreational civilian use. He didn't know of anyone making something in 50 BMG for that purpose so he made his own. The fact that the military thought they were useful and bought a bunch he took as a happy coincidence that ensured his gun would make him rich.

the recoil is very significant, like a Magnum shotgun round but the impulse from the 107 is very gentle, so gentle I'm sure it would push a child around but I don't think it would hurt them

It looks like you show 2 different 107s. They do shoot great and surprising low recoil, I have a 107A1 with the 20 inch barrel and it is a blast. An upscale indoor range in my area even let me fire a mag full of my ball ammo threw mine just it to test their trap. later

What case is that? I just inherited an M82A1 and it didn't come with a case and I'd like a hard protective case.
I'm also thankful I happen to know a few people who have farms where I can go out and shoot the thing at long distances.
