Mine sounded exactly the same, and went away when warm. I had 4 broken studs and a bad gasket on the passenger side. Replaced gaskets on both sides and new studs installed. No more tick!
Yep that's typical. Usually once the manifolds heat up they expand and close the gap where the exhaust leak is. That's why so many of them only make noise when cold.
I bought a new 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T 5.7L Hemi June 2022 - my husband and I spent 10 years saving for our dream car. I noticed there was a ticking noise form the engine which I thought was the "HEMI tick." It was a slight ticking noise at cold start coming from the passenger side and then after a few seconds it would stop ticking. In August, 2022, we had put 2000 miles on the car and we were on a weekend road trip. The engine started to make loud noises and started shaking. Then the engine and electrical light turned. Then suddenly, the motor stalled and shut off while in motion on the highway going 80 mph!!!! 😳 😱 🤬 My husband had to drive by using strange maneuvers, putting in N with brakes and pumping the gas, when it idled it would shut off. Had to do this all the way to the dealer since the tow truck would have been late by an hour and the service department would have been closed. The dealer said it was a cylinder 5 misfire - which ended up a valve dropping and cracking the cylinder - they had to change the long block and the intake manifold, which they are still waiting for parts. One of the techs insinuated it was the MDS system that closes 4 valves at highway speed to reduce fuel consumption. Till this date, the car is still at the dealer, which is an hour away from our house. I found out there is a class action lawsuit against FCA due to the 5.7 and 6.4 HEMI that are not supercharged, having issues with the MDS engines stalling issues which report from NHTSA of the same thing happening to people on the highway, which is a huge safety issue, especially while driving at highway speeds. I didn’t know about the Class Action because it wasn’t showing up on the Internet until late June once a complaint was filed. If I would’ve known I would’ve not purchased a car. This is my daily driver and my husband and I are seriously scared for my safety. Dodge doesn't want to do a buyback and I am having to get an attorney involved because it is not reasonable a new car has these issues.
Yup, exactly how mine has sounded for 5 years. Mines a 2011, 2 years after I bought it, it started. Had it in for repairs, 500 later, it still tic tic. Should be a recall!!!
Thank you, Chris! 2019 RAM 1500 5.7 Hemi. Ticking on startup and went away after the truck warmed up. Whattayaknow! Just like you said: Broken exhaust manifold bolts. This sounds like it should be a recall. But because it's not a safety issue, it probably won't be recalled. Thanks again for posting! :)
Same noise. Mine is a ram 2018 with the 5.7 hemi. From dudes I hear it's either an exhaust manifold gasket, or others say it's piston slap from 'bad lifters'. This is helpful, as I want to be more educated before I take it to an independent mechanic. I'd never take it to a dealer. Just far too expensive
Anybody that changes them gaskets .... VERY IMPORTANT !!! Check the manifold surface with a straightedge , you will notice most times they are either WARPED of just a crappy casting ... for a couple bucks , have them machined and make them true .... if not , the tick will return within time !! :-( might as well do it properly the first time and never touch it again
My 22 1500 sat for 2 months, went to turn it over yesterday - and immediately an identical tick was present. Only 22k on the engine. Unfortunately I have to drive it 155 miles to a location where I can inspect it - but I’m definitely doubt this first to make sure. Thank you!
Chrysler also makes updated hardware thats less susceptible to breaking as easily. Thinner manifolds and upgraded hardware would definitely be a long term fix
Machine manifold flat, or use a belt sander. That's what I did. 80 gritt and grind it flat. Used oem bolts. Shouldn't have any issues, the manifold should not warp again. The warping is what snaps the bolts is my guess... I also used ez out for broken stud. No issue, a left hand drill bit should work better. I had issue with drilling bolt down further trying to predrilled for ez out
I have a 2014 Dodge Journey and had the ticking noise. I was told it was the lifters and to use MARVEL MYSTERY Oil $10.97 Fix from Walmart . I added 1 1/4 cup of the MARVEL MYSTERY Oil to the engine oil every five thousand km (Canadian mileage). I add the MARVEL MYSTERY Oil three times at the five thousand km mark and on the time adding it the ticking noise stopped.
My jeep GC with hemi 5.7 sounds EXACTLY as this one and does exactly the same, nosie when I start the engine, then goes away, More if is cold. Sometimes doesnt even do the sound. But I'm traveling and local mechanic here in colorado said that was the lifters. So Now I will try to see if I can get to the bolts of the exhaust and check by myself. Since again it sounds EXACTLY as the one on this video. They want to charge me 3500 U$ for the complete replace of lifters and camshaft. Which is somehow aceptable for the work on it. Thanks for sharing the video.
I would do the same as you and try to verify if it's an exhaust leak or lifter noise. It can be tricky sometimes as the two sound very similar. But if you listen under the hood very close when you hear the sound you should be able to tell the difference. The lifter noise would be more of a metallic tapping noise that sounds like metal tapping together lightly. The exhaust leak sounds more like air being released than metal on metal contact. If you listen very close you may be able to tell the difference under the hood. It is very common for lifters to fail on these engines. I see it quite a bit... But you have to make sure that's the problem before throwing that kinda money into it.

My 4th gen is ticking at normal temps on idle.. It actually doesn't sound as bad as I've heard other RAM trucks literally sounding like tin cans going down the road.
I've given up on finding out what exactly is ticking, if it fails.. it fails. It's a 2013.
This is BS !! I got 119,000 miles and just had to put a new motor in it$7000 later 🤬🤬 lost a thirty year customer. At first we thought that it was just the broken bolts. But then a bearing went out.
I know exactly how u feel had a lifter failure cost 3k still hear the tick even when running warm
My dam kia is doing this crap. I am gonna take it to a muffler shop to see if they can fix it.
Garbage exhaust manifolds on hemi rams absolute JUNK one thing I hate about the engine
Holy shit mine was missing a bolt lmao I could lift half off damn near
Dam bro dodge freaking sucks for this, kinda reminds me of the early Gen Cadillac Northstar engine
Garbage cheap manifolds manufacturers gotta get their shit together with em. Bolts rust and they break the bolts are small too is main reason why they become brittle
My ford had that tick lol
Most likey cam phaser on Ford
The dodge shop charged me 900.00 to fix and a year later it did it again. POS
Dodge is crap
So, my manifold looks like the rear half was completely rusted off. Is this a situation that would require an immediate repair, since its just the exhaust? Or would i be ok to drive this for a while? I made an appt with repair shop but they cannot fit me in for 2 weeks🫤
I have an 2012 Laramie 5.7. But I have no heat shield and I still have that noise on my passenger side. It does quiet down after warming up tho. So would it most likely be a exhaust leak.
Will this cause a check engine light?
No
