[SPOILERS] JOJO RABBIT Cast and Crew Q&A | TIFF 2019

- In a series of deft, groundbreaking comedies, Taika Waititi took sharp left turns into coming-of-age stories (Boy), vampire movies (What We Do in the Shadows), and even our sacred superheroes (Thor: Ragnarok). Now he brings his half-Maori, half-Jewish, fully skewed sensibilities to his most daring film yet. A dazzling takedown of fascist thinking and the violence it fuels, Jojo Rabbit begins in biting satire but delivers surprising emotional impact.
Jojo Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis) is a precocious kid in World War II Germany with an egregious blind spot. Socially awkward, but a proud member of the Hitler Youth, Jojo passes much of his time with his imaginary friend Adolf (Waititi), a cuddly, energetic, pep-talking version of the Führer. Having completely bought into Nazi hate, Jojo is incensed when he discovers that his mother (Scarlett Johansson, also at the Festival in Marriage Story) has been working for the resistance, helping to keep safe the Jewish people he's been taught to hate. With Germany on the brink of collapse, he is faced with the choice of clinging to his hateful beliefs or embracing his humanity.
Jojo Rabbit walks a precarious high wire, savaging the antisemitism of the Nazi era while identifying pointed parallels to today's fascist groupthink. Waititi, who has long had a gift for infusing even his wildest comedies with real heart, guides this film from taboo-breaking scenes reminiscent of Monty Python or Mel Brooks into far more emotional territory, as Jojo confronts the damage he's done. A singular and essential response to both history and our current moment, Jojo Rabbit simply must be seen. - Фільми й анімація
Watch Scarlett and her constant watching of Roman Griffin Davis (her son in the movie). She is smiling and joyful and protective of him like a real mother. You can really see her connection with him. It's really beautiful and heartwarming. Much respect for Scarlett.
So true. And i saw lately 2 movies with her: marriage stories and jojo rabbit and find myself wondering if her motherhood gave her that super deep and authentic presence? Really great performances.
She was amazing in this film!
I love their chemistry in the movie. It looks very real
I remember when Tom Holland said Taika is the funniest person he ever meet.... I'm glad he's getting the opportunity to make his crazy dreams come true.
Dont disrespect the man. He way biger then tom holland, he have a oscar nomination sins 2005
Bro, if your gonna prove a point maybe at least turn on auto correct
@@cbeilken1659 the irony of the spelling mistake that’s in here lol

taika waititi is a very likeable human being.
Scarlett's character reminded me of the dad in Life is Beautiful and I think most parents does this where they still want their kid to remain a kid in harsh time. While there are some parents that want their kid to grow up fast so they could protect themselves.
Love that movie!
SPOILERS
Too bad she died by the Nazis, just like him.
aaaww! I haven't watch it yet and don't know much about it - but if you compared it to Life Is Beautiful" than it is a beautiful movie!
True, they share the wish for their kids to not grow too fast. But contrary to the father in "Life is beautiful", Rosie does not try to hide the violence of the world... When they go past the executed rebels, she does not make a joke or make Jojo close his eyes (like the Father in "Life is beautiful" would have probably done). She forces him to watch. Quite a fundamental difference.
Ok, so, this audience *just* watched the film and now gets to see and listen to the director and cast?! How forking amazing must the energy in the room have been? Wow. I saw it again yesterday when I took a somewhat reluctant friend who was completely won over and now also wants to see it again; as I did. I just wanted to share such an experience, and it was an experience, with someone I cared about. The main thing I tried to convey was that it's a story about a boy. And that was reiterated to me when my friend, who had been influenced by negative twitterverse feedback. When it was over, he said " it's a story about a boy". It's such a tremendous film.
That's the best thing about going to film festivals! I'm sure there's one in your city
Honestly Taika is just jack sparrow in the modern day
🤣
when Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson played charades and Chris did Jack Sparrow, Tessa's first guess was Taika.
o damn thts why I’m in love w the man
This comment aged well...
Stephen Merchent is so tall even when he’s in the background he’s taller than those in the foreground.
His physicality and the way he moves reminds me so much of Tony Azito and his performance in the movie "The Pirates of Penzance" he's all elbows and knees.

(21:43) I love how you can still hear Roman and Thomasin's conversation in the end and him saying he needs to go toilet is literally everything haha
he should have listened to thomasin
Taika’s hair is fabulous!
Any hair is fabulous 😎
And now this film could be an Oscar contender after winning the People's Choice Award. Way to Taika, you have brought a lot of pride to New Zealand today 👏🏻👏🏻
I don't think so. Taika Waititi's "Two Cars, One Night" was nominated for "Best Live Action Short Film". Maybe, the Academy nominate him for "Best Adapted Screenplay". For me, the great candidates are: "Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood"; "The Lighthouse" ("Best Actor in a Leading Role" (Dafoe) and "Best Original Screenplay" (Robert Eggers, Max Eggers) nominations); "Joker" (especially for "Best Actor in a Leading Role", for Joaquin Phoenix); and "The Irishman". Maybe, the Oscar for Best Directing goes to Tarantino, and the Oscar for Best Picture goes to "Joker". Or the two awards go to "Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood" (among others awards). The Academy is unpredictable.
JotaDM oh hush

@@JotaDM2023 shame you were wrong.
@@jordyharlem Hahahahahah. Thank you for giving me such importance! Luckily I have a life and I don't spend days answering comments! Taika is thanking you for your defense right now! By the way, I never said that Taika did not deserve the Oscar. I said "Maybe, the Academy nominate him for Best Adapted Screenplay." And I was right. He won it for that category. So I was not wrong. Good life!
Weird that the actors were made to stand awkwardly on the stage. Normally they're given chairs.
With his hair like that and the mustache, Taika looks an awful lot like Charlie Chaplin.
He does have the exact same hair as Chaplin
you have no idea how unpretentiously i was happy to read this
Hey, they both played hitler!
His mother brought him up very well. Very well, indeed.
I love these filmmaking Kiwis.
I just literally cant stop watching this...Scarlett and Roman is my new fav duo periodt.
And thomison
Where is Archie Yates (that Yorkie kid with glasses)?
It's too late. Sleeping
Heard of this Taika guy before. But never seen him talking. He is necessarily
weird and crazy and fortunately, I like that.
Okey
I didn't notice any weirdness. I love his hair, though. That is some awesome hair. 😂

Where is Archie? Every time there is a cast interview Archie is no where to found...☹️
They all look like perfect Addams family
I absolutely adore Tikia! You can feel that he’s a bit awkward at the beginning but at the same time he’s made this beautiful thing and is able to articulate the message about dismantling learned hate so well.
6:24 HOW DID THAT PEERON THAT PASS OUTTTT SHE BLEW A KISS BACK OMG
how did that person not pass out* i was typing fast.
Oh dear - tearing up. Our mums and dads. To have a loving mother and father is something to be eternally grateful for.

scarlett johansson is so beautiful❤️❤️ I love every press/intervews she does always so smart and kind❤️
“And the Scarlett Johansson” i love this part 😂😍
I‘m here because of Sam Rockwell.
First time hearing of this guy Taika. He seems nuts. I like him and will check out his other films.
I hope you're joking . . . and I also hope you aren't. Regardless, enjoy his films!
The TV show is very good, I got introduced to his films via Hunt For The Wilderpeople and kept an eye on his films from there, Thor Ragnarok is now my favourite movie
The best ones usually are
His first film is Eagle vs Shark and was shot in my home town. SUCH a good movie. Very Taika and so cool to see his personality shine in Jojo.
Watch boy aye its made in aotearoa where's tikka is from aye kia ora
I don't know how but every time I just see or hear Taika speaking I feel way more better, he is incredible!
Wow - that summing up by Taika was special and so important. Can't wait to see the movie.

No I feel you, I cried for the whole night after watching this movie 😭
Alexa Dyer I’m glad I’m not the only one
Right there with you.
The goddamn butterfly ruined me.
I think it's fitting that Taika looks a lot like Kurt Vonnegut at this event while presenting such an impactful story.
Wow...imagine Vonnegut adapted to screen by Taika! He could do it in a right way
Bitter-sweet with weird humour
I haven't watched that movie in a long time but I think Taika looks and acts just like Kevin Kline character from 'A Fish Called Wanda'
MrGenexxx you hit the nail on the head! So much like him!
So true ! As an ex- Monty Python cree
Yes! Spot on with Kevin Kline.
I f**king love this film
Che-hoo! We're super excited to see and support this film xo

Taika Waititi is sooooo funny n beautiful! Great cast! All amazing but where's my baby - YORKIE!!!
Thomasin could play a young Winona Ryder omg
ruby mae lol wtf no girl
That’s a huge no
Lovely comaraderie among thosE guys. A real tight knit team and it shows in how they interact with eachother here.
Taika is so awkward it's hilarious
He should make a goodhearted sad-happy comedy about single mums
Heaps of amazing women could do that, too.
.... that's literally what this movie is
We should start a taika waititi era in movie industry.. This guy never get boring..
The kid who played Yorki had more screen time than some of them. So he should be here... he stole every scene he was in...
I'll see this film simply on the strength of the cast...so unusual
The way he pronounces Scarlett
I just love that now, whenever I hear Taika speak, I visualize Korg. And that is a great thing. He seems such a likable cuss you want to succeed - just like Korg.
How fun!
Love these people
Taika should play Albert Einstein
I hope they served the audience Bahsketti with the movie.
Dark Star King hahaha! One of my favourite scenes!

Beautiful movie.
Great movie !!
Taika has got to play Charlie Chaplin in something. Anything.
My face looks like a goddamn street map Woman!
So we got Black Widow, Justin Hammer, Caliban and Korg in one movie together. Just realized that haha
Roman and Thomasin are so sweet together! :D
Great film. So 1/4 of this video is them walking out?
alfie allen
Love the movie…Love the director…I’d kill to be that free in spirit..
They liked it then... I had my doubts before, but oh boy what a great movie.
