- The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4MATIC+ ($139,777 CAD, ~$136,300 USD) has been facelifted for this year, and offers a tantalizing mixture of road presence and driving exhilaration. But in terms of value, this comparatively understated 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG only cost the owner ($25,000 CAD, ~$20,650 USD) earlier this year. Which would you choose? SUBSCRIBE!!!

The 2010 E 63 AMG makes you realize just how fast time flies.
Exactly
I remember thinking “man those cars will never be in my price range” here I am considering buying an e63 now haha time does fly
🥲
I still think my 2012 is new Lol ...
It’s crazy.
I remember when Richard Hammond reviewed this E63 on Top Gear 10 years ago… it’s such a machine and it aged so well

I don't even know why they're doing these intros, tbh. They are so, so irrelevant to the rest of the videos.
I’ve wanted a 2010 E63 for so long mostly because I love that front end man that thing is gorgeous
@Michael Mazurczyk made it super easy to tell the models apart too. The recent designs are a mess.
@Michael Mazurczyk Maaaaaannnn im telling you. it feels like they just wannted to go SUPER round withthe car shapes like the S class but ended up making all the cars look alike. the CLS or CLA whatever its called is so pointless but its one of the fastest cars they got (and it looks like an S Class)
Save some money and get a 2013 E550 has a similar engine to that 2021 E63s the M278 motor (V8 BiTurbo) with a renntech flash, no aftermarket parts required can make 550hp and 705 lb ft torque and you just saved yourself like 10 grand.
Agree. Harking back to the w124 era, the angular, sharp shapes is how a Mercedes-Benz is supposed to look, in my opinion.
Maybe I’m getting older but I think the 2010 styling better than the 2021. If I could have the motor and technology from the new gen and put it in the old gen body be awesome.
Paying 25 grand would have been everyone’s choice, end of story.
But spending like 50k in repairs doesnt seem like fun

I work at a Benz dealership. I'll tell you now, if I had the money for a new E63, I'd buy the W212 and fix it up. That's not to say I don't like the new E63 Biturbo V8 model, but the older car feels so raw, and that's what I like in a performance car.
I bought my 2010 E63 in 2014 with 34,000 miles. I crossed 60,000 in November 2021. It’s a wonderful car, everything you want: great around town, great on the highway. And I like the look of it more than I do the new E cars. I’m just hoping that the head bolts hang in there-that was a problem with this engine.
Just replaced mine at 64k there was definitely corrosion glad I did it.

Been driving my 2009 SL63AMG Since the day I bought it. 94,000 Miles, tires cost a lot, but other than regular maintenance, only $4,000 has been spent in 11 years for broken parts. I change the oil every 6,000 miles, but it was a great investment, $135,000 in 2009, and when I get gas, people still think it's a $135,000 car. I won't sell it for $50,000, I just love it that much. The M156 motor is the last of the great V8's. I will never again be able to buy a 550 HP NA V8 Motor, that sounds like a 427 Cobra, with MB SL Quality.

Reading the comments brought tears to my eyes. The W212 E 63 is ever so graceful and endulges with the true essence of it's heritage. The 2010 AMG has aged SUPERBLY!! This generation of Mercedez came with a bang!! The proof is in the pudding, and the proof is in the 6.2 V8's!!!! Can we even talk about the design language... I mean man... this car has aged SO WELL!!!! This is inclusive of its group!! I wish I could take it back to 2010 when that older generation was the state of the art. That N/A engine and it's raw sound is just eye catching!! 🥲🥲 What a marvel and being able to understand and be apart of the generational change, but I will stay stuck in the 2010 gen!! W212 design is ageless and in my eyes superior to any of the latter MBs. The engine (AMG version) sounds superb as well and interior is pretty classic. Could afford either of these and would still pick the older one. The new one has a beautiful front (reminds me of the modern version of SLK300 which according to many is the most beautiful MB ever designed) but somehow looks like a soap box, so I doubt it will stand the test of time like W212.
Someone’s been teaching James how to corner drift.
yes the e63 taught him. its just that easy and natural with the e63
It was about time.
W212 pre facelift looks so muscular 💪. Wish the m156 didn't have the head bolt and cam issues would've been an amazing car
@M1ATA56 AMG m156 was only in the w212 for 2006-2011 and only 1 year they got it right. It was a poorly designed engine because in 2012 and onward they used the m157 and kept the 63 badge. The cams wear out way too fast on these cars no matter the year of engine which will cause lifter issues. Sounds amazing but again poorly designed. W212 e550 carrying the m278 with a tune would blow the doors off the 06-10 AMG. And ya I agree with you, pre facelift all the way. W222,w213,and w205 all look the same it's a shame

Honestly it doesn't cost much more to maintain it than any other luxury vehicle. I have had 2010 E550 (V8) for 6 years now. Just normal maintenance. I turned off all the electronic features (lane assist, memory steering wheel/seats, stuff like that) because i know electronics in these cars go wrong. The steering wheel motor that moves it up and down went bad and i haven't replaced it since i don't even move the wheel.
The only other issues i've had is that after pushing the car for a few weeks one summer, the pulley/serpentine belt started to make noise which i was disappointed with. I thought german engineering would be better then that. So I have to replace that, it's not bad but it's something.
And brake line got rusted and started leaking. Understandable because i'm in Canada but still....after 10-11 years, these cars shouldn't get that rusty that brakes are compromised. I don't even drive it much in winter/snow.
Apart from that, just regular maintenance. I know the air suspension can go bad and leak, but from all my research that was mostly from people going over hard bumps consistently, so i try to avoid bumps/potholes or go over them slowly.
LASTLY, gas consumption is definitely more in city but highway drive it's not bad at all. My avg consumption after 6 years is 12.5L/100 Km (shows in the car). It's about 2x more than the new cars now that average 6-7L/100 KM.
Then again, this car is not my daily driver. So ultimately, you have to know why you're buying such a car and have to research what problems can go wrong with it. If it's your daily driver and you are going to put lots of mileage on it, then obviously prepare to spend a lot on gas and maintenance.
I got a good deal on it 6 years ago and if i was to sell my car now, i can recover 60-70% of the car cost (not the repair, gas & maintenance cost obviously that's sunk cost).
I hope this comment helps someone.
Clearly people are scared to own cars like these but if you do your research and budget for the car , you will be fine.
Take advantage of the fact nobody wants to own these older cars and find yourself an older E550/63 or a CLS550 etc. The older V8's are very cheap cars now. They are selling for as much as older honda accords here in Canada. It's crazy the perception of people on cars like these and the fear of "gas consumption".
The gas consumption compared to an older V6 sedan or especially a V6 SUV, is like 15% more.
I might screen shot ur comment cus ut has good info in these cars
Yeah the E500 are great and a lot cheaper than E63 AMG, because almost everything costs 1,5x times more on E63 than E500

I will forever say that 2011-2015 is the best years for modern Mercedes. Mix of great roaring N/A V8s and the intro of the amazing, better sounding (than the 4.0L) 5.5L twin turbo v8, and the great fun of throwing them around with that raw feeling of machinery, instead of a bunch of computers controller the cars. Cars in that era had personality
Nothing is more expensive as a ‘cheap’ Mercedes, but they can be a lot of fun if you’re willing to get your hands dirty! I paid around $12k for a W211 E55 AMG with good maintenance records and spent another $2k in fluids, filters and bushings to get the maintenance items addressed and with with mild mods, it has around 550whp, with no reliability issues. I do my own work and maintenance costs a few hundred bucks a year using FCP Euro, which has a lifetime warranty on everything they sell. EVERYTHING. It has adjustable coilovers, a trans control unit and good tires and with its power, it feels like a much newer car and it’s old enough that many think it’s just any other 20 year old commuter E class. As Roger Moore said in Cannonball Run, ‘Why advertise?’ 😉👍

The older one is nice, and for a nice sensible price as well. The brand new one most probably you would finance, the older one could buy outright for cash and honestly own the car.
Mercedes is just a blast to drive. I agree the m5 and rs6 are amazing, but something about them is missing a little crazy.
You guys have the best intros!!
