Now I know why I used to listen to this endlessly neary fifty years ago now. This track is a symphony and still inspires me all these years later. Brilliant stuff!
What an magnificent number of this excellent Dutch group, the flute of Thijs van Leer and the guitar-solo of Jan Akkerman......great!
A timeless tune.
Focus forever.
This Dutch Delight certainly focussed on producing quality music....from a long - standing fan in Australia .
Just like with many albums, you buy it for one song and then find out that there are even better songs than the one you bought it for.
Well, I bought the Dutch Masters Album for Hocus Pocus and then found this instrumental and went to heaven!
They really were Dutch Masters! The guitar work is fabulous!
Made me a fan.
If this one sends to heaven, then "Anonymus" sends to seventh heaven!
I'm getting to know all their stuff before a gig that's coming in two months, and with each album I'm seriously more and more excited.
Be sure to check "Neurotika", from 2002, everyone. A killer piece!
If you like me have a youthful heart, I'm 64, try the Dutch band Epica, Pinkpop 2014, they are at best with their opera-trained female singer Simone Simons.
Top band from Holland - never got the credit they so thoroughly deserved - but I've got all their albums!!
flippin' cool band! they looked like nice guys but who cares, they made the coolest music!
To be able to learn how to play "Sylvia" in a Gibson Les Paul was an honor for me as a classically trained man.
Bought all their albums on vinyl back in the day. Everyone should give a listen, you'll probably like it!
Loved Focus since 1971, and still do!
Snare drum strainer thrown off or came loose around 7:32 Song was recorded drums with band in same room live, resonating the snare. I had this album and several other Focus on vinyl in my teens, wore it out, this stuff was gold.
This song I first listened to 35 years ago, recently rediscovered it.
What makes it so intriguing is how an already very decent song around 3:55 totally out of the blue morphs into this great progrock jam, with not only Jan's stellar guitarwork but also Martijn Dresden's jazzy bass motifs that you only begin to notice after x listens.
Much as I love that transition, I always feel the drumming is a bit understated, wish it was Pierre... but that's just a minor complaint about a superb song.
This was what Focus style was about - a fusion of classical themes and rock. However, the rock segment here is not so good (4:29-6:33). They're trying too hard to sound "heavy" with the screaming guitar which says nothing musically. This would've been a completely successful number without it.
Einfach nur schön !!!
this nummer makes me weak and strong 😊 From the moment I hear that song I was fan van Jan Akkerman
I could play this on my organ when I was young.!!!!
A masterpiece song! Thanks so much.
Just been to see Focus in Belfast, last time I saw them was at Queens Uni here in Belfast, my first ever gig I was 13 years old!, 42 years ago and they were just wonderful again!
So beautiful
I have more Focus homework to do. This is beautiful stuff. Can't stand that I'm only finding it now. They just weren't that big here in the US. Hocus Pocus was it.
It's just great music, wonderful. Thanks
damn, what a great piece of music, history and just the best of what humans could aspire to, i am properly humbled! boys, you really frickin' had somethin', wow!
I'm so glad my father lead me to some good music!
same here!
the same here, this music has no specific territory, Im from Venezuela :) Keep rocking bro
One glass of red rot gut wine, and two hits of window pane and my sweet Suzie thunder lips by my side playing this album and life was good in 71'....
Beautiful!
This one makes me feel good inside.... ^_^
Thanks, my favorite of this album and one of my favorites with the band, need more views
Never heard this 1st offering... I like the 1st song, already I'm focused..... thanks for posting!
@mrvantagepro: I like your comments! I was about 16 in the timeframe that you mention. I listened to Focus a lot back then too. I basically rediscovered them this year and I can’t stop listening to their old albums now, as well as their relatively new one (Focus X) which was released about two years ago. They are definitely one of the most innovative and talented bands who ever played, in my book. About a month ago I bought their album Focus X from their website, along with a Focus X tee shirt. The CD is autographed by Thijs van Leer, Pierre van der Linden, Menno Gootjes, and Bobby Jacobs. It is really cool, and so is the tee shirt (with the Focus X graphics on the front)! Yes, I love these guys. I do think Jan Akkerman was (and still is) a superb guitarist. I’d put him right up there with Carlos Santana, who has always been my favorite guitarist for his skill, versatility, and creative depth. I’m with you - Focus is great! Best Regards!
akkerman was way beyond almost anyone , man! no flippin' contest, not in the year 1970 or even earlier, whenever this was recorded..and they even got better after 1970!
No comments... just feelings...

The better progressive rock of my adolescense
Tem 2 bandas da Holanda que eu conheço, Focus e Shocking Blue.
the best thing in focus is the naive and confident style at the same time. And wich great composer was naive and confident....?
Amadeus, Amadeus... (rock me, Amadeus!)?
the music industry forgot how to produce real talent instead greed paved way to real music's death and now what you have left is forgettable junk music , stay with classic prog rock , classic rock and oldies
I couldn't agree more..99.9% of what is considered popular "music" today is pure shite. An endless parade of one (s)hit wonders that come & go like the waves of the sea. Here today, gone tomorrow, only to be replaced by another hapless schmuck being used by the industry & some greedy arsehole.
@@drumdad54sdl47 you're right
ależ to PIĘKNE!!!!!
One person is mad they don't have the Focus to be this great xD
Or maybe they just weren't focusing and accidentally hit the thumbs down instead of up ^^
That's a possibility yes;)
Maybe a deaf.!
Gem.
I'm sure the theme of this music was inspired by Lizst's Consolation 4 (which itself was inspired by the Duchess Maria Pavlovna) !
I find it simultaneously amusing and depressing to see people claiming this band, that, and the other are "underrated", "never got the credit", "unappreciated", et cetera. Focus got played on the radio in the United States, had hit records in Europe..."Hocus Pocus" plays every night on the "Classic Rock" music program at my place of employment. I never bought the album but *Focus Plays Focus* (aka *In and Out of Focus*) was available for sale at the dime store in the podunk American town where we shopped.
Fer Christ's sake, UA-cam commentators, get a freaking clue or just STFU.
Even in my teens in the ‘70s I was looking deeper than what was on the radio or what most people were listening to. Found a lot of great stuff at Woolworths. They had lots of imports.
Top!
