So would it be ok to remove all trees from all private land? I get what you are saying but Consveration and conservation of public land is 2 different things. Conservation is leaving trees alive regardless of who owns them. Of course we need to remove trees to make roads and homes sometimes but cutting them down for woodworking is not conservation. Ill note that i dont give a shit if someone wants to cut down trees for art, just talkin about shit online ya know

My sunflower plant snapped at the stem as a baby. As it grew larger and larger the snapped part turned into a super thick burl and it actually aided the plant supporting against strong chicago winds. My sunflower ended up standing 5 feet tall
It's also a big problem in caudiciform succulents (succulents with fat "trunks" like Stephanie erecta), where plants with decades of growth are poached from their natural habitat
I have a burlwood redwood coffee table. My table has a redwood burl slice for a top and a buckeye root with a rock grown into it as a base. My mom and dad got it for me when I was 15 during our summer trip we took every year. It was from a shop in the redwood forest area that sold all kinds of redwood creations. I love it!

across the street from my childhood home was a massive oak tree, planted when my neighborhood was built in 1904. It had a massive burl on its side, about 4 ft wide by 5ft tall, and about 2 dozen smaller ones up and down the trunk. The trees on either side of it also had a ton of smaller ones on them. Last year, the city came by to replace some old clay pipes finally, and tore out about 8 of these 100+ year old trees, and just threw them all into the chipper. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in burls and firewood turned into wood chips.
Yea, it's one of those prized resources like shark fins. Once someone gets a wiff of the insane money they can make, all morals and logic go out the window.

We have an 1800’s knockdown wardrobe which has boy burled wood inserts on each door It belonged to my great grandmother and was black in color when we got it. It’s truly magnificent

There used to be a show on TLC or Discovery that was basically "Burl Hunters". It showed them basically driving around looking for burls, talking to the landowners, and then saying how much it was worth. I remember he said he sold a 5 or 6 burl for $6500
Certificates of sale do exist. Also, if you look up where nearby sells wood and the guy you're buying from says something that doesn't make sense, chances are they're lying.
in my experience people usually dont mind foraging as lomg as you ask permission to be on their land, if its not private or protected property you can forage, might be different state to state so its always good to double check local regulations
Tree burls are essentially what happens when you cut of a branch and the tree naturally heals it with the burl growth, bonsai growers use a special putty that increases the enzyme that heals those cuts and branch losses to make cool bonsai trees.

It's on state forest property and probably illegal to cut down. But a perfect specimen of nature's artistry.
Well, dead & standing is habitat for birds & other animals so it's not something you're really supposed to remove when it looks like that. If it were a dead pine it would be different.
