    DISCLAIMER:
    I want to make it clear that this is not an attack on #HasanPiker, nor is it an attempt to blindly defend him. As someone who has been a fan of Hasan since his time at #TYT, I have a certain level of admiration for him. However, as a black femme, I also feel the need to speak out about some of the problematic behavior I've noticed in his content over the years.
    Despite my admiration for Hasan, I can't help but notice that he seems to lack perspective when it comes to issues affecting black women. As a black non-binary femme myself, I've noticed a pattern of misogynistic jokes and comments that are often based on appearance, perceived intelligence and perceived aggression. It's disappointing to see someone who is supposed to represent #leftist values falling into the same traps as those on the far right.
    I understand that there is a shortage of decent leftist voices in the media, especially when compared to the likes of Andrew Tate and Sneako.
    However, being a leftist does not give anyone a free pass to engage in harmful behavior. As an activist and someone who is on the autism spectrum, I can recognize patterns and I believe it's important to hold Hasan accountable for his actions.
    I still enjoy watching Hasan's content and will continue to support him, but it's important to acknowledge his flaws and work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable community.

    This is really helpful. You are really clear and nuanced about your perspective and critiques.
    Speaking as a white straight male, I do have really intense emotional reactions to criticisms like this. I did have one to this video initially. It took me a while to breathe through. It was the same reaction I had after listening to another black woman give a presentation on racism before I had really woken up to some of the basics of the awful reality of this country. For any white people having these intense emotional reactions, I would say that deep breathing and slowing down and listening are really important. For me I find the fact that I am having the reaction is evidence I need to learn something.
    Lastly I did want to share some of my perspectives in the hopes of furthering the dialogue. What I want to share is that it is genuinely really difficult to wake up to realizing that you are part of a group that has used it's disproportionate power to oppress and exploit others. It can be really challenging to your self identity when caring for others/ being a good person (whatever that means to you) is important to you. When you grew up thinking things like "Martin Luther King Jr. solved racism" to realize that you believing that lie supports very real and potent racist systemic problems today. It's really challenging for anyone to try to understand a different perspective, and as Lucretia points out we are all imperfect and we all cause harm, and we all need to improve.
    I think among the main points that I heard in this video is that white people who want to help need to be more responsible for our emotional reactions to criticism and not let it get in the way of receiving feedback. I do believe that people like Lucretia want to see us succeed as allies and their criticism/feedback will help us with that. I believe that while I am not responsible for causing the tremendous evils of systematized racism and other bigotry (and the tainted benefits I receive from them) that my ancestors left me, I am responsible to work at improving myself, educating myself, listening and allying in order to help improve the situation and support marginalized people and groups.

      Bruh, same. Believing that you are a good person, while simultaneously benefiting from systems that act to oppress others...it can feel pretty frustrating even when you know it's not about you. Acknowledging those feelings suck could be a way allies can assist each other to foster empathy.

    Also white male leftist here to explicitly tell you that your voice and this video was invaluable for me in a journey of self reflection that has been going on for a while. The genesis of a lot of leftist ideals comes from a place of wanting fairness, egalitarianism, and making sure every person on planet earth is not bound by a class and has their needs taking care of. In that service it seemed incredibly morally hypocritical to care so much about taking down capitalism and the inequity it creates while also not tackling patriarchy and racism because my same core moral values are essentially the same. Everyone being treated fairly, undoing injustice, equity, etc. It lead me to self reflection and examination. I constantly need work on deprograming my internalized racism, anti blackness, and to a lesser extent misogyny, although the racism is a far bigger blind spot for me. It requires humility, internal monitoring of thoughts that are articulated in my head, and even viceral more "ID" type reactions of my emotions that I know are being rattled by my racism. I also spend a lot of time on UA-cam so I've been proactively tailoring my subscriptions to what I need to hear and blind spots I have in my thinking. Sorry the comment got rambled a lot. Critiques of Hasan are very hard to guage in his chat because a lot of them are trolls trying to derail the stream and ultimately leftist goals and I do feel bad for Hasan personally in that sense. Your take helps improve the environment and pushes things towards where they truly should be.

      I appreciate your vulnerability! Sharing it really matters, other white male leftists in your position will see it and ultimately have a better time absorbing what I’m saying - despite us being on the left the perception gap still exists and effects us all. I appreciate you doing the work.

    This is a really good and important video. Far too many people think there is this binary of you either "are racist" or "aren't" and dont understand the nuance that you can still perpetuate harmful behaviors even if you think you are above it. We need to learn to be open to being self critical & be willing to change when confronted with our biases

    I've noticed that non-Black people are a lot harsher in their responses to Black women all over social media. It is a pervasive issue on the internet. When Black women respond in kind it comes off as angry, but that's just matching the energy they came with.

    • @lucretia_macevil

      Yes you nailed it. If people assume you’re an evil rotted person before you open your mouth, they’re gonna treat you that way accordingly. Then when you respond to their vitriol - they claim victim based on their bias they came with initially.

    there was a stream highlight uploaded to hasan’s main channel where, at one point, he made a joke about the rich leaving the poor alone and dater*ping women in their own social class.
    i had to rewind the vid to make sure i heard it right and even read the chat when he said it and people were calling him out about it but he didn’t address it ((at least not in the clip)).
    i still watch hasan and enjoy his content but this was a huge wake up moment. even the guy who helped radicalized me is, at the end of the day, still a white man and will say things that are problematic without thinking about it.
    thank you for this video!! i have been taking a more critical, objective look at the “allies” in my life and this video helped me not feel crazy :’) love your work!

    I see critique as a mirror that others hold up to me. That mirror may be distorted or dirty, but if I get hung up on the condition of the mirror and miss the image it is showing me, I also miss an opportunity for correction and improvement.

      @lucretia_macevil  11 місяців тому +4

      I appreciate your comment but I challenge you to question what you mean by “dirty or distorted” especially when speaking about black women critiquing your activism as a white male leftist. That may be your perception gap creeping in again 😅

    Subscribed within the first 5 minutes of this video. This is definitely a widespread issue on the left and our favourite himbo is not immune. I also give Hasan my Amazon Prime sub because i feel he is genuine in his intentions and would like to see him work past his biases however, prefer youtube for my leftist content consumption. Maybe i just haven't spent enough time on twitch to have more diverse streamers recommended to me 🤷🏽‍♀️

      @@lucretia_macevil u r so welcome! ya, i got some valuable knowledge on palestine from him.... tho i am sensitive to energies online + i definitely felt hurt in my body from the exclusionary element he has.
      i'd just challenge one ☝🏽 part tho in saying he is a white male, as both his parents are turkish. i say that bc while he may be able to assimilate to a degree into usa whiteness, in europe, say germany 🇩🇪 or austria 🇦🇹 or britain 🇬🇧, there's no way his family would be seen as white, and folx are regularly subjected to discrimination.
      i personally would say he's brown but pale enough to assimilate as a "hot mediterranean" as opposed to the harnful barriers put on darker brown people from muslim countries who don't have quite so much passing-privilege.
      🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🥰

    As someone watching Hasan's UA-cam clips pretty regularly over the past few months (but not his Twitch streams), I was curious about this topic but I'm not really convinced by the arguments presented here. I think it would have been really helpful to present actual clips of Hasan or other leftists making problematic statements. I'm not saying the conclusions are wrong, but I think it could have been more persuasive. I'm left genuinely not knowing what Hasan is saying to warrant this criticism. :S

    • @lucretia_macevil
      @lucretia_macevil  5 місяців тому +1

      I mentioned several scenarios in the video, you’d have to go searching for them - I couldn’t play full segments of everything because of UA-cam.
      Appreciate your comment, but unfortunately, misogynoir isn’t an argument or criticism that can be decided by non-black femmes.
      You can search:
      Hasan Nicki minaj
      Hasan Jax
      Hasan black women
      And have any of these supposed issues answered for you, if you were being actually genuine in wanting to find out what the issue is. People who don’t want to understand, choose not to.
      That isn’t up to me. I can’t comprehend it for you.
