Awesome!!! Thank you for this video. My X5 had the same issue. Independent repair shop had no clue. BMW wanted a gazillion. This was cheap and easy to do. NO MORE LIGHTS! I love you man!
+kong tae You are VERY WELCOMe! Glad you had success! This is a known failure item and the BMW dealerships should get real on the repair. $400USD max would be fair.
+Ernie Andrews it less the $20 bucks for the part and took about an hour to fix it. The steps you showed as spot on and very easy to follow. Have no issues with it since.
Perfecto tio!! Gran video!!
thanks for the great clip. even though my x5 E53 4.8is was not making the clicking noise but all the lights were coming on.when I pulled the actuator apart the gear was badly worn and this fixed my problem. And to think BMW wanted several thousand dollars to rebuild the transfer case saying it was worn gears in transfer case
i'm happy you said that, i have all 3 lights on but no clicking sound, i just had the brake pads changed and when i got it back the lights were on, i hope this is the problem or an ABS sensor.
You dont need to seperate the worm gear motor ( The botom half of the actuator) from the top half with the wheel gear. Just remove the cir clip and washer and remove the cover plate and simply pop out the plastic gear wheel. upon reassembly just slide the worm gear back into place beside the wheel gear. It slides in easy.
T25 Star to remove the body from the gear. Also I had a little trouble popping the cover off with little screw drivers as well. I drilled a tiny hole in the corner and that helped me get under it to pop it. Be sure to clean it from any bits of the metal from drilling.
You really don't need to remove the motor from the housing. The gear assembly comes right out. It is in fact easier to remove the assembly straight up from the worm gear.
Got the exact same issue with a 06 E53 X5 3.0 ECE these days. Servomotor error logged in ISTA. Waiting for the new motor and try the replacement during the weeekend :)
I'm having the same exact problem as you; however, this clicking noise is coming from the passenger side. Is there only one transfer case actuator? Or are there multiple transfer case actuators? I assumed this clicking came from the damaged plastic compartment holding the windshield wiper fluid. I noticed that all the fluid leaked out, which then fires off a warning light. The car symptoms are dead on. I will attempt to perform this repair because my BMW has been requiring multiple repairs and this is financially draining me. The passenger side lock actuator and the lock getting stuck in the down position cost me a fortune in parts and labor. The expansion tank ruptured. Brakes and rotors changed. New tires. Windshield replaced. Driver door unable to open and requires new door handle and the piece which connects to the lock. These problems have all taken place in the past 6 months. Thanks for the DIY video.
I disassembled my engine that controls the 4x4 box and made the gear change but the 4x4 light and abs remains on the dashboard nothing changed bmw x6m e71 2010 manufacture can help me to solve the problem
i've got same problem. but the man from bmw centr told me u should buy the whole shi.... there is bad smell of oil and it won't start your front wheels. is that true???
+Ernie Andrews - Ernie, you made it so simple to follow and I only spent $112 total. The dealer wanted to change the whole transfer case which would run me about $3200. Then I was just going to change the actuator itself which is about $500+ and I ran across your video. I'm really glad I did! Thanks again. Ray
Be careful, the gear may not fit. I did order a cheaper one on eBay, and it would not fit. I ended up ordering an aluminum piece on eBay, and it fit well. I'm hoping the problem of wear will disappear with the aluminum part.
@@lalo5574 Never ever buy an aluminum gear wheel. The system is designed with the hard plastic for a reason. You will damage the worm gear using an aluminum gear.
Anybody had the issue with it working fine for the first week after replacement and then same thing all over again? Also seem and sounds like LSD is locked... Any suggestions? Thanks ahead of time
this item should be same as the gear www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-X3-E83-X5-E53-servo-motor-transfer-case-actuator-motor-tranmission-repair-45-/141185372453?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20df4dd125

Thanks for the video, saved my in laws thousand's. Total cost $7.00 for gear and a little bit of my time.
Good job!I have a E53 X5 3.0i 2001 , 230k miles on it. Own it since new car. Have doing a lot of diy on it .

Fantastic video.
You can just turn it 180 degrees and use other side of that gear ⚙️ I did it and still working 3 years later

Would have been nice if they showed how they got the actuator off the car... Have no idea where the 4 bolts are located to get at removing them.
Big Thank you for this video.
I have a leak from where the actuator attaches to the transfer case. Is there a seal or gasket that can be replaced?
Did it myself and went fine.
Where can we get the gear and not the whole actuator?

What if only ABS and brake lights

Wood I have to calibrate with a bmw scan tool or scanner
i'm seeing the three lights from time to time but never heard the noise after I turn off the engine, should I go for this fix?
Forget the OdometerGears site to order the gear. Go on Ebay, it will cost you a lot less.

Yeah I know they sell similar ones without the notch, slightly different, just have to look carefully.

If you checked your old gear and you know for sure that it's bad then you should be alright.

Great Video, Thanks....
does anyone know what error message in DIS would tiger this problem?
No!! it may be as easy as speed sensor and it might be as bad as ABS module, have it diagnose first!
