  • Fuji was busy with a bunch of announcements. GFX 100s II, the XT50, a supposed upgrade to their kit lens which has less reach, slower aperture and removed OIS. We'll talk about all those releases, and then dive into Fuji's ergonomic schizophrenia. Why they keep experimenting with different camera layouts every release. It's perplexing and bewildering. Filmed on the camera Fuji wishes they made, Nikon ZF with Nikkor 85mm f1.2 S lens :)

I agree 100%. To make it even more sensible, in Australia, the X-S20, X-T5, X-H2 and X-T50 all cost the SAME PRICE. Until there's an X-Pro4 with Voigtlaender lenses, I'm on L-mount full-time.

The kit lens was actually invented by cell phone companies, Motorola, I think or maybe it goes clear back to Blackberry. You see, the cell phone companies know that people won't spend $1800 on a cell phone and then $1800 on a camera, so they took action. They sent an agent to the camera companies disguised as an optics expert and called him Reginald. Reginald told them, "Nice looking camera, but it does not take any pictures. How are you going to sell it?"
"Well, " said the camera executives, "We'll just sell them this $4000 lens to go with it."
"I've got a better idea," chimed in the fake optics expert Reginald, "Just melt down a 5 cent pop bottle from the recycle bin, and inject it into a lens mold. Cover it with ten cents worth of plastic and a couple springs and sell it for $100."
"Those pictures will be dark, wavy and horrid!" gasped the camera executives.
"That's the whole idea!" said Reginald. "Now they will HAVE to buy a much better lens for a boatload of money. And be sure to make it so that ONLY your lenses can hook up to your cameras."
"Now we see! Brilliant" said the camera executives.
But little did they know that people would buy those kit lenses and then share pictures and videos made with them and even post them on social media.
Now, the people with cell phones post their stuff side by side, and millions shout in horror:
"We can't buy those camera things! They make horrible pictures. The videos are UNWATCHABLE! Let's buy cell phones instead."
Gone are the days when cameras came with a sharp contrasty nifty-fifty. The kit lens is such an abomination that it has sealed the fate of the camera companies for good, and the cell phone companies sneer at them in derision.

8:58....You can assign a button as a C1 custom mode recall to avoid having to reach to the dial to switch modes. Set up 120p on C1, now you can be in any other mode on the camera and hit C1 recall and the settings instantly load and a yellow C1 shows up to indicate you are in recall mode, hit the same recall button again and go back to whatever mode you were in. Problem solved.

Sure there is a "way" to switch to back and forth to C1, it does not explain controversial placement of dedicated dial - top LCD could be placed on the left with no harm to its overall functionality (BTW it still doesn't display number of frames left on bigger cards due to 9999 limit). Moreover placement of right side buttons is also just bad - very inconvenient to press. To me even joystick is worse than in my old X-T3. In my opinions, H2 ergonomics is a disaster to wildlife shooters (I'd like to remind that on the very beginning we're not able to use front command dial for ISO). I can't understand how many stupid decisions have been taken last times. I'm with Fujifilm-X for years (switched from Canon FF DSLR), but If have to invest in the whole ecosystem (bodies, lenses, flashes, grips etc.) from the scratch I would probably look at the other brand today, but to be honest no one makes "serious" APS-C body today, I'd probably buy A1/Z8/R5II but Sony ergonomics seems to be best for me.

    • @jessejayphotography
      @jessejayphotography 4 місяці тому

@@arturdarulewski 9999 limit is non issue, imho. The feature is there when you get closer to your storage limit not to know you have 14,000 shots left on your 1TB card. It also shows you estimated video time which is an incredibly useful feature.
The screen is on the right because there is more space simple as that.
I also have an R5 and switching modes from photo to video is way worse requiring an awkward thumb over to hit the the mode button then back down to info then back up to scroll wheel to select. So no camera is perfect. Fuji is faster for me by a long shot.

You have no idea how much Japan needs a temporary alcohol ban, and it's not just for the drunk dude who kept swapping dials and switches all over the place over in Fujifilm.
I just upgraded from the X-T2 to the X-T5 and while I have been mostly happy with my upgrade due to the much faster response speed, the redesigned shutter and the much reduced power consumption, some handling decisions continue to baffle me to this day. They wasted an entire dial just to allow you to switch between still and movie mode, like why? That dial used to be the photometry dial in the X-T2 and I swap between photometry modes way more than I use the movie mode. Now I had to spend a function button just so that I can swap between photometry modes. Setting movie mode as a drive mode item as they did in the X-T2 was way better, or even better, a dedicated record button like many cameras have done. At least they moved the top function button to somewhere an actual human finger can access.
The new 16-50mm confuses me a lot even though I won't be going anywhere near that territory any time soon (already have an 18-135mm main and an 18-55mm f/2.8-4.0 backup) because it just shows Fuji has forgotten what they were supposed to be doing. Is it supposed to be an upgrade of the 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6? The speed increase is great and all, but did the OIS have to be sacrificed? Guess that means they are going all in on IBIS, but what took them so long? It also still doesn't help the older Fuji fans considering the Pro, A, and E lines don't have it and only the newest three T line cameras (4, 5, 50) have it. Is it supposed to succeed the legendary 18-55mm? That's half a stop and 1.1x magnification sacrificed on the telephoto end for 1.1x wider frame. Really not sure the sacrifices were worth it.

I don't understand the point of the X-T50 either. I think the marketing folks believe they can piggyback on the X100V and X100VI to get sales. I would rather have the X-S20. And, that new lens really confuses me. I have the 18-55 and think I'd still rather have it than the new one. As for the dials, they are becoming an anachronism. On my X-T3 I can completely ignore them by programming other buttons and using the command dials. My big question is, what will the next version of the X-S20 be like? Will that successor come soon? Or, will they cave to the screaming of the fan boys and make the XPro 4 first. For me, it doesn't matter. I'll be using my X-T3 for a while as most other cameras are beyond my budget as a amateur. I would love a used FF body, but even used they're too much. Thanks for your thoughts and some fun. Have a great weekend!

What’s really frustrating is that X-H2S has one of the best APSC sensors on the planet for sports & wildlife photo and video, but they put it into a body that works best on tripods for landscape photographers.
Then the X-H2 has the one of the best APSC sensors for landscape photography, and they got the body right too, but they gave it a flip out screen that sucks to use on a tripod.
They can make the best sports & wildlife APSC camera in history if they just put the X-H2S sensor in an X-S20 body with dual card slots and weather sealing. I currently own the X-T4, X-S10, X-E3 and X-T2. I would instantly sell the last 3 and buy an X-S2 with those specs.

Every company changes product. If you have a much older camera you might consider an X-T50 in a year or so when the price comes down. It seems like Fuji aren’t going to update that model for a while.
I just want an X-H2s in an X-H1 body, with the flip out screen that also pivots and tilts (I think that was on the X-T4), no one could complain with that. @DiversionScience 4 місяці тому +3

@@cameraconspiracies I think it has to do with limitations of the data transfer from the sensor to the main board. The pixel binning in the A7SIII is done by on-sensor electronics, avoiding the transfer of 48MP of sensor data. It probably wouldn't do 120FPS if all that data would need to be moved to memory at that rate, not even talking about the CPU power needed to convert that to 4K video on the fly.
It's clear though that those sensors also have a readout mode for the full MP count. The only reason I can think of not making it all available is the quad-bayer filter, because you can't pixel bin a 48MP sensor with a 48MP bayer filter. At least not without losing control of the de-bayering process.
I don't know what magic Insta360 uses, but I suspect they are either forced to do a full readout, or more likely, they use a quad-bayer and extrapolate their way to "48MP" like a lot of cellphones do.

No AF, MF only. So, for video you would have to stop it down to make sure you're in focus. For portraiture this lens would make for a low hit ratio, because, again, no AF. Pointless lens for both scenarios. Maybe landscape photographers would find it useful, but they usually want everything in focus most of the time, so they would stop it down. I don't know, man, I have hard time finding the use case for Noct. Big aperture lenses are a waste without AF.

The 100sii does have prores 60fps 4k, as discussed in my latest videos (shameless plug) possibly over usb-c. (ssd is official wording, which could be hdmi). I use the GF250mm lens, and stabilzation is very good for static stuff, but panning is a challenge and a half, very smooth until it's not. Again visible in one of my greatest latest (shameless plugs complete). Side note, here in Japan it's allot easier to get close and clear shots of birds around the water ways.. being from seattle, I feel your plight.

Talking about Fuji's schizophrenia... The X-T3 and X-T30 mk I don't store WB color shift in film recipes. X-T 30 mk II does save WB color shift, but it also saves *all* shooting settings in Film recipes. Change AF, speed burst, bracketing? That's now saved in your current RECIPE. Not optional. Change recipe? Prepare for everything to chance. Extremely jarring. X-T4 and beyond also let you save WB color shifts in recipes. X-E4 which was released not too far from X-T30 mk II didn't get that massive recipe downgrade I'm pretty sure. But now the X- 50 gets a Film dial, but it's not for recipes, JUST the film sim. I don't want my Classic Chrome based recipe to have the same settings as my Acros recipe. What the hell are you guys even doing?! I still need to set a button to change recipe, so this dial now has zero purpose and can't be changed to anything else. Just a dial without a purpose. And we already have far fewer buttons than we used to in the X-T20. "Upgrades"
PLEASE take over Fuji for a week. They have no direction.

To be fair, the new kit lens is wider (where it makes more of a difference). It has their better/faster linear focus motors. It’s also weather sealed, which the old one wasn’t. Missing OIS is a downer, but all their cameras now have IBIS. I’m not a Fuji shooter anymore, so no skin in the game, but I think it’s a decent upgrade. But the good news is really, it’s a kit lens. If you don’t like it, get body only. Solved it.

    • @cameraconspiracies
      @cameraconspiracies  4 місяці тому +1

You're making excuses for them. IBIS isn't enough in most cases, OIS helps a lot. Lens is slower. My point is that the downsides outweigh any positives for video shooters.

@@cameraconspiracies I don’t have to make excuses for Fuji, nor would I. The X-T50 is a train wreck in my opinion. Vastly over priced with a ridiculous film sim dial instead of an actually useful control. But there is no perfect camera or lens, and there are always trade offs. We are talking about a kit lens. Any serious creator will outgrow a kit lens. This is essentially a low end 24-70 FF equivalent. Do any of the high end pro f/2.8 versions have stab? Not that I am aware of. Not Sony, Tamron, or Sigma anyway. Can’t speak for other systems. Don’t most seriously video shooters also use gimbals? And for those that use primes, as I am led to believe most video folks do, most of those don’t have stab either. I occasionally agree with your takes, but this one I don’t. That’s all there is to it. You don’t have to insult my opinion as “making excuses”. I often think you just look for stuff to shit talk about, to drive clicks and views, but I keep that to myself. Oh, whoops… 😂

@@cameraconspiracies as a former Fuji shooter and someone who owned the 18-55 twice, and sold it both times, I just disagree. It was fine, but the sharpness wasn’t there compared to many of Fuji’s other excellent lenses. “Best kit lens ever made” isn’t setting the bar super high, as most of them are rubbish. I’d wager the new one will still beat the pants off the competition. But still be a kit lens with compromises that allow Fuji to sell it as a $400 add-on.

6:30 I wouldn't get the new kit lens but I get why it's designed that way. Weighing 240g is only 85g heavier than the 16mm F2.8 (155g), so it's kinda like bringing this prime but still getting the reach of a 24-75mm FF equivalent standard zoom, especially during travel when photos are usually taken in the day. Combined with the IBIS it will be a very good travel / daytime lens. Just bring a prime, say a 23mm F2 for evenings, the entire kit weighs less than a kilo, and you get stabilised photos and footage all day.
So unless I'm upgrading anything with IBIS, I won't get this lens. But if I was the XT50, I might as well get the lens as a kit and sell the old XT30ii with the 18-55. I haven't seen the image quality reviews yet, but I expect at 16mm will be really good.

You’re missing the point with Fuji. Why is the X100 series, 27mm lens, XT double digit series so popular? Not because they have stellar specs. It’s their compact size. The XT5 although a great cam is bigger than the Sony FF cameras. With the xt50 you have most of what’s in the xt5 but much smaller. And what was the biggest gripe with the X100vi? The lens can’t resolve the 40 mp. Well the new 16-50 did just the that. All Fuji seems to be doing is listening to their customers.

While I do like smaller compact cameras, and the XT50 is impressive with the IBIS and the 40mb sensor, it feels like it’s a bit too much like the XT5 but not THAT much more “better” at a painful pricepoint.
The main selling point is it’s a bit smaller than the XT5, and it’s supposed to be the much cheaper option…..but it’s ultimately not that much cheaper AND because it’s the “cheaper” option it’s not weather sealed, and it doesn’t have the impressive new battery life of the XT5 due to physical size.
If they had kept the xt50 with the 26mp sensor with a fast processor, it’d lower the price and be a sort of cheaper compact XH2ii.
Because at this rate, what exactly would an xpro4 offer? An XT50 with a view finder and weather sealing for $1000 more??
