I want to say thanks shug for making the Hammock camping simplified with a grace only you can provide! I became a member of hammock forums and doing research to making my own hammock and accessories!
Thanks. Good video, excellent music, fabulous channel. I've been a hiker for many years & have used a tarp, sleeping mat & wool blanket for my sleep system. It works well but you do have to do prep work most of the time to ensure a comfy night. I never considered changing it until recently. Two weekends ago I went hiking in the Wayne Nat'l Forest & awoke to 5 large spiders sharing my blanket. That experience & having since found your channel has inspired me to give a hammock a try.
Thanks for taking the considerable time and effort putting these videos together! I've learned quite a bit from watching them. My Son and I have gotten a few hikes on the AT with our hammocks in this year and are looking forward to many more thanks to you.
Now that's my kind of wintery fun! Thanks for translating that kooky Fahrenheit into Canuckian Celcius so as we can understand it up here! -26C is very impressive for cold butt hammock hanging. Nicely done! I gotta get my 3-season hammock gear extended into that zone so I can maybe join you folks one day from the Lakehead here!
I love you northern hilljacks! The canopy and igloo were awesome! It would be fun to see some more food prep and dutch over cooking next trip. Thanks for the vids Shug!
Shug, thanks for another great vid! You've helped me get into hammock camping, and just got back from the HF 3rd Annual Florida Hang. Great time! Thanks for the good times.
Thanks Shug, looks like a blast. I was a ground dweller with the scouts this weekend. Just a dusting of snow and a balmy 26 degrees for a low. Still working on getting a winter setup for the hammock.
I just got back from a 28-mile overnight in Quehanna Wild Area, Penn. I think it got down to 10 degrees, and I thought that was cold! You fellas are brave, much respect!
Oh, Shug.... With everything going on in the world today it's nice to know that some of us are still enjoying the simple things in life, taking in the sights, and getting out there. Tonight in my ER there were 2 gunshot victims and then got home and the cops had my street filled up due to some chaos up the block. I can't wait til the next time I'm surrounded by trees and a nice quiet trail. I'm glad I get to have these little escapes and live vicariously through you for a little bit for now.
you have some of the best hiking and camping videos i have yet to see............I like the fact that you are a boy scout supporter. I also like that you know what you are doing.....
Great vid Shug, a friend I camp with uses the parachute as well, it is one awesome piece of gear Nice weather and tell them boys that is a cool igloo or I mean warm.
I really enjoy your videos. I'm going to my first Hang on Friday Jan 25th here in NJ. We just got a little snow this evening and we are getting more on Friday. I can't wait.
I'm down in the basement on the treadmill, over here on Fairview and Hewitt. And you're in paradise. Ainnit funny how your videos inspire even in the workaday world? Love the stuff, Shug. Keep on inspirin', you crisp-choppin' picker, you! -Jonathan and Oscar
Great video of some great camping. I don't have the insulation or the thick blood to handle those temps. The coldest I have been able to hang in my part of the world this year was 30*. See you on the hammockforum!
Looks like it was a great time! Good idea about the frost bib - I need to be lookin into something like that myself. I keep saying all would be right with the world if I could only quit breathing for the night....
Well, my buttocks is frozen just by watching the section 13 part! Man alive that northern wind had to hurt : ) I love stuff like that though. Looked like a real good time & good of those fellers to let you tag along : )
Hope you never get frostbite Shug. I did once in Upstate NY where I grew up. It was 20 below, I ran out to catch the school bus without a hat. The bus was late and my ear lobes froze solid, turned all black and blue and nearly dropped off. My own dumb fault. Very painful when they thawed out.
Shug! First let me say your videos are awesome!! Second my buddy and I are planning on hammock camping from Florida, where we reside to Wisconsin over a eight day adventure and was wondering if you'd be interested in joining for a day of hammocking.
Shug, Another classic. Pure escapist fare (and I'm not talking about a carnival where a guy tries to get out of a straight jacket hanging upside down). I must say however, that your adaptation to extreme cold is very odd, and is either the result of frozen gray matter (technical term - Popsicle brain), or simply a matter of a lacking good sense (technical term - psychocrazymaniacrocksinheadosis). Thanks for sharing such a great, fun, and funny time with all of us.
So a Shug-Sicle, you mark my words, I will hit the "Frozen Butt Hang" at least once in my life. Like Mardi Gras or the falling ball in NY or even the Super Bowl, Yes this hang is the hang of all hangs.
Enjoyed the vid. would a bivy type sack solve the wind issue under the tarp? Or have you used one? Been seeing folks making things out of tyvek. Your thoughts.
Just re-watching some of your cold hangs again Shug, I can't find mention of what camera /s you use though, I'm off to Northern Sweden in January and am looking into camera and battery drain, any tips please, I did a search but out of all your videos I can't find one on your camera kit, cheers Shug.
I use a Canon Elph 110HS and carry extra batteries. They last about a day to day and a half shooting as much video as I so. Just picked up a Sony Cyber Shot DSC-HX80 to play with too.
Ah thanks for that, I knew about that camera but thought you might have used something else for the cold, great info, thanks very much, I'll have a look see, thanks Shug. All the best, Al.
In cold it is important to keep the batteries warm. I carry the camera up against my body in an inner pocket until need. Sleep with a couple batteries in a chest pocket at night.
Awesome video as always, Shug! I always love the soundtracks to your videos too. Do you guys sell any of your recordings? I would buy some in a heartbeat!
on a serious note shug, you ever had problems with snow blindness? i've done quite a bit of skiing in europe from being a kid and we were always advised to keep our gogles / glasses on as you can suffer even in overcast weather
Hey Shug. What boots/pants are you using in this video? I'm still trying to find the balance where my feet breathe but don't freeze. That and just looking for some good pants that can handle snow without ski's below them........ Not like its gonna get below 20 anytime soon down here unfortunately..... Cheers sir!
Hey Shug......greetings from an old lover of the Northwoods. Question: was this cold and wind due to a Alberta Clipper and if so was it a Manitoba Mauler or Saskatchewan Screamer? ;)
it looks like you had great fun.....however....what if you have nplease let me know what yo o trees to hang and there is a foot of snow,,,,,pleae let me know what you would do...
just buy a warbonnett blackbird or ridgerunner hammock ,and be done with it ..they hold up,feel great ,and if your over 50 ,you wont hurt nothing like ground camping ..if youdont mind a few lbs xtra wght ,carry a wiggys bag ,and a milpad and one really good wool blanket .. chooseslpg bags foryour area of coldand temp . or like shug and the rest of us ,buy several types and wghts . shug likes under /over quilts and they work for him,i prefer a slpg bag and a damn good one ! too old to freeze my butt off ,and other gear shug has is very good stuff .
