"we didn't have any preconceived idea of what it was going to look like" good job saying that with a straight face, guy
Best piece of bullshit in the entire video XD
@@edwardfeast1697 Richest guy in the UK and a billion euros in this. Shame it is being built in France though.
Toffs and cash = car
Especially seeing as Jim Radcliffe approached JLR to buy the tooling for the defender lol
That was the funnjest part xD. They need to be that, they're marketing guys.
It's like they made a vehicle with features that people actually want. Being able to unscrew the switch box along with a graphic that tells you the dimensions of the vehicle is genius. Cheers to Ineos, the last company I expected to make a vehicle like this
An useful recreational & adventure vehicle.. but this just remind me of Rivian & GMC Hummer EV for about same price those are fully electric, have different new options & things like tank turn & crab-walk mode among other things.. so yeahh..
Correct. They listened to what the target market wanted instead of just heaping more tech into it and hoping it will impress. I hope it does really well and annoys Gerry McGovern and Land Rover immensely in the process.
@@thebnicho it wont, they will make millions selling current defenders whilst Ineos will lose many many millions trying to fling this dumpster on wheels.
@@Wouter-van-der-Molen You must work for JLR. Jealousy is a curse. :D
@@poplaurentiu4148 This is designed to be a bomb proof workhorse, not an EV gimmick off roader. In the Jungle there are no charging stations.
What we all hoped for when land rover said they were redesigning the defender in 2015
Queria saber o representante para Portugal agradecia resposta se vão ter a versão 130 ou 110 dupla cabine
Gustaria saber se vão ter 110 normal ou 90 todos com capota de lona para south África huntig
What people hoped but wasn't willing to buy.
Land Rover has to sell cars like all other companies. And most people don't buy cars like these. They only have silly opinions because opinions don't cost money.
You mean what the delusional rabid off road nutters wanted that nobody else actually wanted.
@@RR-us2kp , I don’t think so. There are a lot of people who like the old Defenders. There is a market for these.
That's seriously, easily, the most attractive interior of a car I've seen in a very long time 😍
I really appreciate the reference to the obscure Santana yet again showing you are a true car person
The first vehicle I thought of when I saw the Ineos announcement.
There's one driving about local to me.

I have a Santana Anibal. Looks very similar. Can drive it around on mountain trails and through fields with no worries. Quite brilliant off-road. But it is terrible on the road.
Those roof buttons are so cool i would keep pressing them making noises with my mouth
it just needed a red button and trigger on the gear selector for the full fighter jet experience lol

As a lorry driver I do keep pressing them. For how shit daf's are the buttons make great noises.
I love how they said they're trying to make it as easy to repair as possible
Why would you want to repair it, do they know it will be really unreliable?
@@shortfattoad7317 this vehicle is meant to be used in the outback in ruggid terrain. things will brake for sure, so having it easy while repairing it is nice. don't compare this car to an SUV, you need to compare it with an old Defender, a Landcruiser or an old G-Class.
@Asv2000W Sure, like this will be used for a global expedition....

@@teabagtowers3823 Landcruiser 70 series are only available in Australia and for terrorists. All other countries and professions are excluded. The newer LC are just SUVs
Love the concept. Particularly the interior nails it for me, with the aircraft style roof console, Recaro seats and no nonsense design. With a straight 6 BMW petrol will be well worth a test drive.
Best of everything into one. Love the "physical" switches, buttons, and the roof top controls for the off road. Everything is systematically placed. It's so good to have the buttons, rather than searching and digging into a touch screen based set up.
Steering wheel can be improvised. And also, would love to see analogue gauges, speedo, rpm, temp, battery, oil level etc, for the driver please! 😁
Yes indeed Analogue engine oil temp, coolant temp, transmission temp?, would be perfect.
I totally agree. I so dislike touch screens on new models. Those are for soccer moms. Buttons are for real man! No disrespect for ladies that are practical like us. Is just that buttons always work better when you are off road or concentrated on driving. As you should.
Why would you want to look at the roof to make an emergency quick change to the drive settings? How about differentially shaped controls on the transmission tunnel?
@@maxine2798 Simply drive your car. You'll soon learn where the buttons are located and be able to use them from muscle-memory. If you drive it, you'll know it.
@@maxine2798 Agree, also the roof switches are going to be closer to your eyes, so for people that need glasses for close up, they'll be twice as annoying.
"let's make a defender since LR chose not to"
It's probably reliable as well
Brilliant concept made real, looks like they have fixed everything that was wrong with the defender. Let’s hope it is a success💪
I guess you’ve not checked the prototype reviews. LOL. Not much is fixed. They’ve actually managed to create more design issues. Brilliant.
@@inter-linked lol I hope this whole thing tanks.
But they haven't..
I think any issues can be ironed out, whereas Landover just refused, sitting on their laurels.
I love everything about this. The physical buttons, the attention how every aspect of it will be used. Oh yea, looks cool too!
The designer trying to do mental and verbal gymnastics to not say they just used tracing paper over a 110 to design it was absolutely hilarious 🤣
It went to court as well! They got past it.
@Nathan Marais the new defender makes me sad
@Nathan Marais 💯 agreed
@@1anre You are sad
My thoughts exactly! I like the car and wish it every success, but pretending it isn't a 'continuity Defender' is just ridiculous.
Looks like a defender, but was developed by Magna Steyr, the same people who build the Mercedes G-wagen, add a BMW engine and you got an odd mixture that can still be quite tasty
Some Defenders in South Africa had BMW straight six engines, so the idea of a BMW straight six powered Defender is not exactly new
@@lonerider3441 So even more likely it'll break down.
I've had 6 bmw straight six diesels, all twin turbo varient inclusing wife's current X5 40d and its a phenomenal power plant and gearbox set up. Zero issues related to them. Definitely makes a solid heart for a rugged beast.
They should make a more affordable ''agricoltural'' version, base model vinyl seats handcranked windows etc.
@@teabagtowers3823 No, the new 6 Cylinder engines from BMW are really good and reliable
Having grown up driving in, and operating, series 1 and 11 landrovers, I love this, and will definitely be ordering one in the not too distant future, thank you
Having a Bronco that I wheel hard, I truly appreciate what Ineos has done with the Grenadier. I once owed a Land Rover 88 back in the day. I wish I still had it, but it was limited as to what and where you could go in it. Off road yes, hi-way, not so much. The Grenadier seems to be, like my FORD Bronco, a jack of all trades. I would love to take it across the Rubicon.
If they don’t sell these to Australia they are definitely missing out.
July next year, Carsales already made a video about it
Australia won't buy them. they are to sophisticated
@@grantswan8525 these do look a bit too luxurious and will no doubt cost a lot more in Australia because the government maintains import taxes to protect the non-existent domestic auto industry (f-wits) but I think this will sell as many as they can build. If they offered this as a "hose out" I'd want one and it would earn a place in the conversation with Land Cruiser and Patrol.
If they don't sell it to Australia what are they going to do with all of those specially designed aftermarket Roobars? Can't remember seeing too many roos on the road on my last trip to the midlands
I can also see why he dodged saying the word Defender. Anybody that tried to copy that poor vehicle that was so neglected by LR over three decades would not last long. So the design might have echoes of the Defender, just like the G series tries to, only it is a lot better execution. Fingers crossed it all works with the French build quality hopefully a touch better than the English
European vehicles in the out back.? Haven’t seen any in my travels all over Australia. Mostly 70series Toyota’s. May be a lady or two in Mosman might buy one. Aussies are a smart bunch😀
Love that pure function dictates the design. The focus on it being a more mechanical, analogue means that it has a charm that the new defender has lost
Ok boomer 😂
@@levyroth ok jew
"charm that the new Defender has lost". ZZZZZzzzzzz. Another needle stoically stuck in the groove. Having replaced my cumbersome 1998 110 with the new Defender a year ago, I can with a good degree of qualification say that you can keep your analogue function-dictated design. I've never had so much versatile off-road fun in a 4x4, nor towed 3.4 tonnes across europe with such consummate ease.
My dad preordered his on the 1st of October and him and I specced it out for 2 hours before my online school started that day. Can’t wait for it to arrive and be added to the collection because it looks awesome!
Really enjoyed this video. Great insights on the design, vision, people involved and the potential in this project. Thank you.
I love it. When you love an iconic part of your home country and have the $$ to make your prefect version of it. I love how it’s just put together with off shelf stuff and engineered to be functional. Modular perfection. It’s like engineers designed it lol

@@inter-linked everything is made of bits. Usually the cheapest and easiest to make regardless of how reliable they will be. They are made to a cost to be just good enough to last the warranty. Choosing the best bits made by experts go last and you think that’s a problem? I’ve worked in car factories. I’ve worked for trw and denso all sort of parts end up in all sorts of manufacturers cars.
There is a large market out there for a body on frame utility vehicle. One that is designed to survive being a work tool.
They MUST get the reliability right. It needs to start every time. Bits must not drop off.
Maintenance needs to be affordable and simple.
They had the right idea by buying an existing, working factory (and the workforce with it). Getting production going is where most upstart car manufacturers fail.
I love it! I have two questions. When will it make it to the US? And what will the actual cost be? The new diesel Jeep Wranglers are running $62,000.00 plus with options (3 L).

But laking any taste....
It's needed ...not Just wanted, because Land Rover shat the bed with the rebodied discovery they call the 'Defender'. Gwagen and original Defender shape worked for 40 years, so why fix it?

The best Grenadier introduction that I have yet seen. I've been a Land Rover fanatic for many years and have owned and still own a number of Land Rovers (four currently registered and on the road...I tend to just keep them forever). My Land Rovers are all Series or Defenders. I am currently looking at the possibility of purchasing a new Defender, but I'm not completely sold on them. I just want a basic, utilitarian vehicle that keeps it as simple as possible with longevity. I had thought that Land Rover had no option in this day and age but to leave the classic Series/Defender shape behind, but the Ineos Grenadier appears to have managed to create the vehicle that I wish Land Rover had evolved the Defender into. I'm quite conflicted with which way I'm going to go! I'll be very interested to see what their pricing and availability is in Australia. Phil - Queensland, Australia.
Sadly Land Rover created a new 'plastic' Defender, OK for the school run or the tranquil green lanes of England, but it's very debatable if it will ever be successful in the 'real' 4x4 market because of its design and huge dependency on electronics. The Grenadier seems to be something very different and looks like it will be properly 'ruggedised' to take the punishment of offroading /overlanding in some pretty remote and multi-terrain parts of the world. I certainly know what I will be spending my money on.
My thoughts exactly. Could be a big hit here if its classed as utility and GST and expenses are 100% allowe
Depends on how prepared you are to empty a substantial amount of your bank balance.....A "value for money" proposition here in Oz ?? Up to the individual I guess.
Great points. I know someone involved and if it was me, I'd go Grenadier. I think it will be an immediate cult classic, and a great vehicle. I also think for what you get, 45k for a new one seems.. pretty reasonable.
Phil mate, you say you have four Series Land Rovers/ Defenders. If you’re looking for a “basic, utilitarian vehicle that keeps it as simple as possible with longevity” why don’t you just look in your barn/garage?

Well technically it's not their work anymore. Land Rover took Ineos to court over it and they actually lost the rights to the old Defender design 😂😂😂😂😂. To be honest though it looks way better than any Defender and looks like it has Jeep Wrangler level capability 😎

what do you expect? Sr Jim was (is) fan of the Defender. He want it to buy the rights to the Defender since it would be discontinued By Land Rover, but the LR wanted to use the name for the new SUV that's pretty much useless to off road enthusiast that prefer simplicity above all.
This vehicle it's NOT a copy if you think about it. But it's what the new Defender by LR should have been like. Now do I care if the Grenadier looks like the old Defender? Not one bit!
Is the 70 series land cruiser also a "copy"? How about the Suzuki Jimny? Or do every single ladder frame off-roader with live axles look the same?
The interior controls alone have me sold
I know right, Who could have thougt knobs n buttons could look so cool haha. And on the ceiling as well!
What a brilliant description of a vehicle, quite, precise with no hype, gasps just straight "tell as it is" description I loved it and thank you Henry for that. Because of my work I have used and driven a certain off road vehicle for all my working life except for two Range Rovers which were not fit for purpose I went back to the original vehicle. This Grenadier seems to be the dogs and my deposit has already gone in and I can't wait for the demo vehicle to come out a few month further on as yet. This Ineos will be the next go to off roader for serious users (did I hear the SAS mentioned ? I say no more ) and me of course!!
I live in Cape Town South Africa. The 4x4 / adventure /outdoor market here constitutes one of the larger sectors of the vehicle market. The first demo arrived in country & has been extremely well accepted. No doubt Ineos are on a winner in this part of the world. KIS- Keep it simple !
This and the new Lotus all you need for 100k
That lotus is an absolute beauty for 60k a no brainer
@@yusafmalik5171 Absolutely
I reckon your bang on…got a build slot reserved for the Lotus.
Perfect combo oh my goodness
I reckon it’s entry price will be far north of 45 grand, but we’ll see
Would love to test it on Cape York, Australia. Cape York has broken many 4 wheel drives. If it can survive there then they will have a truly great vehicle.
I reluctantly sold my old Landrover Defender when I emmigrated from Blighty. Loved that car, but since they don't sell in the USA, (because of lack of modern things like airbags etc) I've had to resign myself to future without this iconic offroader in it... until now.... this car is going to ROCK the US industry filled with G-Wagons and Wranglers. Can't wait to see this in person :)
Perfect Defender upgrade and done properly. I bet even the Royal family will use them. Thank goodness they kept that basic Defender shape and coolness.
"Toot" love it!
Me, too! Would have loved to hear it!
Why didn't you press it, @Henry Catchpole?
Chitty bang bang comes to mind - that was all bout inventing and new ideas ;)
Toot, toot... Ahh stuff it - HONK!
Yes, that's so simple but clever and useful. Hopefully other car makers take that on.
Should've been "PARP"!
When Land Rover introduced the new Defender everyone was complaining it didn't look enough like the old one. Now a company decides to make a replacement that looks like the original one, as is it's intention to, and now everyone here in the comments is complaining it looks too old and too much like the original Defender. I don't get it.
They complain because its not a Land Rover and looks very much like one.
Enthusiasts complained they didn't get manual, simple, light and affordable RWD sportscars anymore and when Toyota made it they complained it wasn't powerful enough and that the interior looked simplistic compared to the competition.
We love the concept of it, but the styling is really lazy and seriously bordering on IP theft
The people in the other videos love it. Don’t worry.
@@cra_55 Its very close to IP theft, and for a modernizes "retromod" look, its not even that great. The tail light look awful
Wow, that looks incredible!
Been following since day one and have reserved one, hope it turns out to be everything we want it to be.
Canceled two Bronco day one reservations to wait for this. I hope they make it happen in the US market.
They might struggle to get there coz of a whole lot of fed regs
They are neither on the pre-approved list for US import nor on the pending list for imports. They haven't even made a working production model yet, so far all they have is non-road legal prototypes. I like the concept of this vehicle but I think it will still be a few years before you buy it even in the EU, much less the US.

@@Jack-yl7cc yup. I can only dream of having a modern defender type car instead of spending $80k on a 25 year old beat up defender here in the US. hopefully they make this happen.
I doubt that unless you were at the bottom of the list.
@@larrym1112 you realize they are pricing this at 75k starting price here in the US.
I think the aircraft switches on the ceiling sold it for me. And the ability to take the switch panels off. Would be easy to fabricate a new one with additions for your own use.
Looks great. Only thing missing is a winch in the front bumper.
I like it! It’s had a lot of coverage & interest here in Australia. It appears to be done right & should be a hit with a lot of off roaders.👍🏼😎🇦🇺
you have got to be joking. it is like some sort of naff pastiche of something that never existed.
@@ianmiles7916 crawl back into your SUV crossover please.
@@ianmiles7916 Jokes on you, this is the 79 series that is actually giving you features. If they are the same price, this is miles ahead. If this is as it appears in this video, it will take off big time down under.
@snook, with a BMW engine? I cant see cattle stations getting 1000000km out of one of these.
@@carni5064 you don’t know that yet, no one does. The economics of keeping cars that long is changing anyways. If you get a nice 500k out of it before needing a rebuild that’s plenty and what most old 1hz or td42 are good for anyway. It’s just the “lucky ones” that hit 1 million and it’s hype.
On another note ice engines will become uneconomical in 10-15 years to own so these arguments are invalid. In 10 years you will be buying electric ineos and toyotas
