Ineos Grenadier : 4X4 OFF-ROAD Review - Defender Re-Born? | Catchpole on Carfection

  • Henry Catchpole takes the Ineos Grenadier Off-road to test if it just as good on the dirt as the car it so closely resembles.
In recent years, the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes G-Wagon have slightly shifted their focus to double up as status symbols, which has left a gap in the market for a solely utility focused off-roader.
The Ineos Grenadier is an homage to the those cars but in more than just appearance. It is built using a body-on-frame construction and has three locking differentials which suggests that it will be a very capable off-roading/overlanding vehicle. Ineos propose this as work-first vehicle that is all business. But will it fill the gap left behind by the Defender and Mercedes G-Wagon of old?
The Grenadier is powered by BMWs ubiquitous and reliable B58 and B57 engines (petrol and diesel respectively) mated to a ZF 8-speed torque converter automatic.
Here’s our first look at the Grenadier: • Is the Ineos Grenadier...
If you’re unfamiliar with Ineos, they are predominantly a chemicals company. You may have seen their name as a sponsor on the Mercedes AMG F1 cars. It was founded by Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Looking forward to seeing this vehicle put through its proper paces. All videos to date on the Ineos have been in light-weight easy 4x4 conditions that any "off the shelf" off-road vehicle could handle. If this is truly the utilitarian beast that it is being made out to be, show us what it can truly do!

Well, making a 4x4 than can go about anywhere is not rocket science, people can even build cars in their own garages easily that beat standard 4x4's off the road 10 - 0. The difficulty comes when you want to make the vehicle simultaneously good on road, good off road and keep the price in reasonable range. Then when you add safety, etc. requirements of modern car use. Most so called new 4x4's are crappy off road, because they aren't really meant for that.

The idea that a chemical company can launch a car company just because Sir Jim wanted to is amazing. I like the design choices based on function over form that still create a very comfortable vehicle that should be incredibly capable. Sure there are questions and concerns over reliability and access to service centres but Ineos has done everything within their power to answer those questions and have been full transparent in what they are trying to do. The problem with "passive" simple dual purpose vehicles, and one that decades of old landrovers have proved, is that they are heavily compromised. Take the suspension, you want it able to carry a heavy load? well that means stiff springs and a terrible ride. You want it to be amazing off road? Well that means soft springs and a rolly-polly road handling (and possibly ending upside down on the infamous moose test..) The new Defender, and in fact pretty much very JLR product since the P38 RR, has used electronics and clever but complicated systems (like air springs and electronic ARBs) to try to provide the widest possible capability across the biggest varriation in terrain.
So today, when the vast majority of miles are driven on paved and graded roads, even by 'serious' off-roaders, will customers paying a significant amount of money for this Grenadier put up with the necessary compromises? That, that is the important question.........

    - dislocating sway bars

    - the locking of the inner wheel to allow tight turns in narrow trails (like the LC200)
    - optional shocks for commercial use or light duty use like ome, bilstein, fox, kings, etc

You can get a Landover Defender from £45K, so I think this thing will struggle to get traction (no pun intended) in the intended market, certainly in the UK. Off-road capable Chelsea tractors are the popular choice, but they all come with good road manners on tarmac these days. I suspect that old boat will not be a wafting experience on the motorway. They will sell some, but it is going to be a niche market.

It won't affect either company. Neither Land Rover nor Merc make a vehicle in that segment. The G-Wagon may look similar, but is only bought for looks despite it's capability. And the new Defender is realistically a replacement for the old Discovery and is a luxary segment above the Grenadier. This thing won't set sales records, but anyone who buys one will buy it because it's the perfect vehicle for them and they'll probably love the hell out of them.

    • @mathewhumvee

@@Kevin-hp5fk On the Defender part I agree to a point. Land rover isn’t the same Land Rover that used to conquer the great unknown.
But Mercedes’ Benz does have a G-Wagen called the professional. It’s a hard core mil spec version of the G. It’s sold in Africa, South America, Australia, Some parts of Europe and Asia. Sold to the public, military, and NGOs.
But Mercedes won’t sell it in North America or most of Europe because they want people to buy the lux version of there G-Wagons.

With both models having very long waiting lists I don't think JLR or Merc execs are losing any sleep over this. Perhaps this will compete with the Wrangler at the high end but Jeep has strong competition from the Bronco. I think Toyota probably has the most to worry about with the 70 Series Land Cruiser but that's a very niche car only sold in select markets with excellent brand recognition. That being said, Ineos has pretty modest aims for this with 25-30,000 cars a year so I wish them luck.

top quality review as always from Catchpole. However.. as good and as capable as the Grenadier obviously is, it will never be that car you park up and look back at.. Copying another car design rarely ever truly works IMO. A well maintained original landie can't be beaten on said looks and if you want to modernise one you can.. I'm biased as I own an original 110 which has been tastefully but heavily modified in every department (incl. 4.8 V8 and 6sp. tip tronic auto box, elec. parking brake, suspension, brakes, interior etc, etc.) yet looks almost stock from the outside. If you want a 'tool' invest in a well maintained original Landie. Do some basic modifications, use it as much as you want and experience little to no depreciation.

What I'm really intrigued to know is how much else is going to be lifted from BMW's parts bin too? How much of the electronic "rubbish" that causes people to bemoan the fact that the new Defender isn't "simple, rugged and reliable like the old one" is going to be in the Grenadier? It's got BMW engines so it will almost certainly have BMW engine control units, gearbox ones too and for automatic only which is hardly simple and putting the driver in control. What about the body control module? Emissions controls? Anti-lock brakes? Traction control? Immobiliser? Electric windows? Electrically adjustable, folding and heated mirrors? Remote central locking? LED lighting? The list goes on and on and I bet it will be just as packed with electronics as any other modern car. People are liking it because it's being presented as something different, but I highly doubt that it truly is.
