My primary problem with how Spongebob looks now is that the yellow is way too damn bright, like he was drawn with highlighter or something. I prefer the cooler tones and relaxed facial expressions that he started out with - but maybe I’m just biased because that’s what I grew up with, idk.
Maybe it’s just the Mandela effect or how he’s shown on merchandise, but I for some reason remembered him looking a lot brighter in the earlier seasons, and only realizing I misremembered when I saw clips online.

You know, I agree with you. But I don’t think the cooler colors was an intentional design. Since they were painted on cels their coloring becomes duller when they’re photographed. So even though he’s always had that coloring, yeah I agree, he is way too bright now.

Aside from season 1, the Fear of a Krabby Patty episode had my favourite style of the show. It was expressive and cartoony, but wasn't overly distracting or jarring. Plus, the writing of the episode paired well with it.
From a technical and visual standpoint, I think SpongeBob from the 2nd movie and Season 9B looks the best, the animation is plenty expressive without being over the top and the design of SpongeBob himself looks well balanced
I worked on the Sandy Cheeks movie last year and, early on, I had a hard time not pushing SpongeBob more toward his look from the original 3 seasons and I can admit that's my personal bias lol I don't think anyone could argue that the board artists on the later seasons aren't talented, because they're insanely talented. Maybe the amount of visual humor to written humor was easier for them to gauge when the show was still storyboard driven. For whatever reason, there's an oversaturation and less of a contrast when it comes to the visual story telling.
Spongebob'schanges over the years reminds me that things can become too, polished and sanitized. To me a lot of the charm for something like Spongebob's old design was that it felt like a person sat down and made it by hand, not perfectly drawn on a computer where everything is done by a stock template. At least that's how I see it
I was thinkinf of that golden rule before you even mentioned. It should also be important to note that the rule is more specifically that you should have a 100 faces FOR every weird face, not necessarily the other way around.
I don’t think over-expressiveness is the problem, it’s that the “funny faces” are too common. They lessen the comedic impact when they throw them at you constantly.
I don’t mind the exaggerated facial expressions. Between season 6 to the first half of season 9 the animation was like Family Guy, stilted and not a lot of movement or face expression. It was like a breath of fresh air to see the characters not stand in one place most of the time.
Season 2-5 had the best SpongeBob Art style The Stylization Was Perfect season 2 and 4 used more thin outlines and more fluid animation yet season 3 and 5 go for a more geometric look with thicker outlines but stiffer animation But I love both of these art styles Season 10-13 look great when it is In service of the plot (Mimic Madness and Karen’s Virus is a fantastic examples) But more often than not it just looks like they are using the faces as excuses for jokes rather then the punchline to a great joke, unlike most though i do like how colorful it is and the fluidity is really nice since it’s underwater. But I’m mixed on the choice to animate the characters like silly putty. It looks fine on SpongeBob and to a extent Squidward but on krabs and Patrick doesn’t make sense to me especially since krabs canonically is a hardshell krab
Tbh, you have to appreciate the effort to make SpongeBob look more dynamic. If they keep using the same expression, people will start finding him mundane-and yeah, it can be jarring at times, but I'd rather have an expressive SpongeBob as opposed to a brick wall
I agree that the team is 100% talented, and I prefer the over-the-top slapstick to the nearly lifeless feeling of the seasons 6-8 era. I just wish they stopped trying to make every movement in the show feel so over-the-top.

Honestly if they toned down the over-expressions (as in, how often they are), and dialled the style a few years back (though I personally prefer Season 4-5 styles), SpongeBob would still probably be quite enjoyable for older audiences today.

deifenetly feel that the faster pacing and overuse of zany faces compared to what we grew up watching is just to fit the newer target audiences which is obv gonna be kids from newer generations (not that its a bad thing we just arent the target audience anymore). Seasons 1 and 2 looked the best Imo. I love old cel animation so much, and the colors were vibrant yet so warm. And after all these years I never noticed they removed his dimples!!!

Season 1 in my opinion has the best SpongeBob design. It looked so natural and smooth, it’s better than SpongeBob making 124 different expression faces in every single episode now.

In old spongebob the "faces" were used to show an extreme emotional state.
Contorted faces for insanity, giant eyes for extreme emotional distress, etc.
Now the faces dont hit quite as hard, because they are overused.
Its like the show mr.pickles.
The gore and sex were funny for all of 1 episode. You can only laugh at a severed head or a gimp so many times before it becomes boring
Spongebob season fucking 3 should not be as expressive as a cartoon is allowed to be. Im sorry even as a kid i prefered more "overanimated" shows to spongebob like Ren and Stimpy, Old Looney tunes (especially clampett), Ed Edd N Eddy and Tex Avery cartoons

Season 5: Not-So-Special Spongebob
Season 6-9a: Modern Spongebob (it’s still modern)

I don't mind over exaggerated faces, but it seems like they're doing it every few seconds. It worked in earlier episodes because they didn't over do it.
It wouldn't be out of place in a show like Ren & Stimpy, but since SpongeBob wasn't like this before, it stands out.
deifenetly feel that the faster pacing and overuse of zany faces compared to what we grew up watching is just to fit the newer target audiences which is obv gonna be kids from newer generations (not that its a bad thing we just arent the target audience anymore). The more flashy wacky animation is deifenetly a "look! look!" Attention grab to newer audiences since attention spans have been dropping way more as we get access to unrestricted internet use younger and younger

Seasons 1 and 2 looked the best Imo. I love old cel animation so much, and the colors were vibrant yet so warm. I loved SpongeBob’s og design too, with a thin outline, larger eyes, smaller pupils, and not as square body. Season 4 honestly did it the best before his design went completely downhill. And after all these years I never noticed they removed his dimples!!!
