Strings: 12-62
__________
While the original version of Black Sabbath was recorded in E-Standard, I decided to play it in B-Standard tuning for the Hooked episode, and so this lesson is in B-Standard as well.
B-Standard Tuning: B-E-A-D-F#-B
This lesson is in the key of D-Minor (G-Minor position in Standard Tuning) and makes use of the D-Blues and D-Natural Minor Scales. The solo is D-Minor Pentatonic.

Just when you thought this song couldn't get any darker and more evil sounding , you accomplished it!👍🤘🤘
🙏🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Brilliant Steve! Could you consider one day posting this tuned to B and halving the tempo for a Funeral Doom version? Would be apocalyptic
Great idea!
Type O Negative did a super slow B tuned version back in the 90s.
@@humperdidoo loved it 🤘💀🤘
Admittedly I'm not a fan of "x song tuned down" but man, with Sabbath, and this song in particular, it just works so well. You made it darker and more ominous sounding, killer job🤘
Now tune the speakers to B standard
when i think of b-standard sabbath, i think of the Type O Negative cover off Nativity in Black
Great cover!
Some Type O Negative DID would be awesome.
When I play Into The Void, I usually tune to drop B. The main/verse riff sounds much heavier an octave lower.
Never even considered playing that song in B standard i imagine it very much does sound nasty. Will have to try this as im starting my journey into learning doom metal stuff ie EW Sleep etc etc and am getting ready to restring with thicker strings and tune down from C# to B standard. Cheers mate
@@justinrisen1929 He said "drop b" not B standard. That Means C standard but the low C dropped to B.
I’m just now seeing that Premier Guitar wrote a feature article about you and your site. Congratulations! Keep up the great content.
Absolute classic!!!! Sounds amazing here!!
Thanks man!
I don't think a single band / song could ever capture how heavy Black Sabbath - Black sabbath is / was. I still feel it in my heart and stomach just like I did as a kid. Honestly in B tuning it just seems less treble-y but just as fucking heavy. Also the tone is beautiful!
Came after the "Doom" in the name looking for "the other" Doom Metal - you know, Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Katatonia - ended up founding the best guitar content since I picked up my old guitar a couple months ago after some 15 years. Thanks for the knowledge sharing and motivation to keep practicing, even though I'm a newbie 2.0.
Keep on doomin', Steve!
Glad you're finding it useful, Luis! Thanks for watching.
I'm coming back too after a long time away on bass.
Sounds amazing! Love it!
Thanks Zach!
Excellent Steve! sounds great!!
Thanks dude!
Steve I would just like to say killer lesson,It was so refreshing to see You on Premier Guitar, You are all things Iommic, what a pleasure it’s been seeing your channel grow Bro, keep killing it ,Steve again there is only one Doom Channel on UA-cam for me it’s Does it Doom.
Much appreciated, man. Thank you for the kind words and for continuing to watch over the years!
Great job, man! I’ve listened to that song 1000 times and you really got the tone nailed down. Fantastic job on the solo.
I’m sure Tony is smiling right now.
Thanks Matt!
Awesome video man, tone is awesome. I'd love to see a video on your straps with Toms Vintage Straps. Thinking about buying one and you talking about them might push me over the edge.
Hey Steve congrats on your recent success with the guitars and new pedal out. Hope youre doing well. Cheers🍻
Thanks so much brother!
Oh hell yeah, one of my favourite riffs in my favourite tuning, let's go!!
Yes!
this is how to play Does it Doom by the band Does it Doom on the album Does it Doom 🤘🏻
I love how you plug into an amp but you can mix it with a track and still sound full and thick!
Thanks John!
Sounds really good this low.
Thanks Marc! Thought it would be fun to try.
The version by Type O Negative is brutal and also in B standard 🔥💀 I wonder why no one ever mentions type o negative when referring to doom metal.
Great video man!
Thanks brother!
The paint of iommi face is dope
great stuff thanks
Cool episode!
Thanks man!
Thank you Steve.
Thanks for watching Man!
Dude... heavy af! 🤘
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Your the man I’m saving for a woodrite !
Thanks man!
When my son was a child this song scared the shit out of him.
Now I know you've done some Saint Vitus guides but I'd be really interested to hear guides of their more fast paced songs like Saint Vitus, Look Behind You, Hallow's Victim and Just Another Notch for example.
Also the now disbanded Debris Inc. side project of Vitus' guitarist Dave Chandler also had some chunky (and punky) riffs that you may like.
It sounds great man!
I don't recall exactly how they played this song in particular during "the end tour" but i'm pretty sure they did play some song in b standard during that tour. Maybe i'm wrong but i am quite sure i've seen a video where they were playing "into the void" in b standard.
The C# songs were all played in C during The End tour.
@@DoesItDoom Yep you're right, that was in c standard
Was really cool meeting you the other night at Snowblind! Curious what your favorite band/set was. So many great performances.
Nice meeting you too! Pentagram was the highlight of the night for me. You?
@@DoesItDoom I was really impressed by both Order of the Owl and Mothership.
@@foxtrotsteve I missed Order of the Owl but Mothership was incredible.
Hey another Snowblind attendee. Yeah meeting Steve was super cool. I really loved Cloak even though they were a little off brand for the rest of the bands, though it wasn't my first time seeing them.
Have you thought about making your pedals into vst plugins? They sound amazing and I'd love to try at least one, but I have a fully digital setup without an amp :/
Shit man, steve always nails it
Thanks Pete!
Steve you are a wizard yourself, you should do a lesson on bury me in smoke by DOWN
That sounds heavy as shit, will have to try this out, great work, nice one 👌🏻
This is...
How can I say it?
BADASS!
🙏🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Tony had the best solos ever off rip!
Without a doubt man!
Badass. Does anyone else habitually mess with the playback speed of their favorite tracks as well? Sounds better with just about anything, but my friends and I were experimenting with this even before we heard Lysol, Extra-Capsular Extraction, Jerusalem, Come My Fanatics, Absolutego, etc. We had a desire make it heavier, so we literally weighted the center of our shitty turntable. Even Surf Rock sounded sick.
I love your channel Steve... Also i need your very advise about one topic ...i own an orange crush 35rt which according to Thomman can play stoner riffs...thus, could you please give me your opinion about which settings should i try on the amp in order to sound more fuzzy without any pedal usages? I think you are the perfect person for that kind of things ...thank you so much man!!!
Crank the gain on the amp. It's pretty difficult though to get fuzz with just amp settings. It's also very traditional to get fuzz tone from pedals, they just do it best. Even Iommi is using a Dallas range master to get that bright distorted sound from his Laney in 1970.
You're better off getting a cheap fuzz pedal like a caline M fuzz (big muff clone) or Behringer super fuzz (univox super fuzz clone).
Hey steve! Hope youre doing good. I have a question maybe you can help answer it. I have a 65w peavey sudio pro 112 red strip combo amp. The speaker in it is a 12" Blue Marvel 8 ohm (doesnt say wattage on it) i want to replace it with another one, was thinking maybe a v30 or a Swamp thang. Besides it having to be an 8ohm speaker do i have to match the wattage? Can it be a higher wattage speaker or does it have to be lower? Thanks and i always appreciate your videos.
Hey man! You want the wattage of the speaker to be equal to or greater than the wattage of the amp. The Blue Marvel is a 75W speaker so I would go with something at least 75W just to be on the safe side.
Hi I'm interested in doom, stoner, sludge, metal, blues&neo soul. I'm interested in fusing these sounds into band. What avenues do I take to get involved in this culture of music?
Have you seen the Laney LA Studio 3 watt supergroup? Seems like a sweet amp for home studio
I have. And it does!
Does it doom? Yes it do 😁
Hi Steve!. I need help with the calibration of my Epiphone SG G400, I currently tune to B-standard with Ernie Ball 011-052. My question is how high the strings should be to compensate the gauge with the tuning, since I have fretting problems on the first 3 strings, but sporadically, I try to keep a low action, you know, for comfort.
I hope you can answer my small but annoying problem hahaha. Greetings from Argentina!
Those strings are on the light side for B. I would try 12-56. Then I would set neck relief af 0.010” and 12th fret action at 5/64” on the 6th and 4/64” on the 1st. Adjust from there. If you’re still having issues, you might have issues with action at the nut (how deep your nut slots are cut) or a fret issue.
@@DoesItDoom Thanks for your reply Steve! I really appreciate it! I've been a little upset about this problem. I'll go to the person who calibrated my sg last time, and tell him about your recommendations. I suspect that he did not do his job well regarding the nut, he built it based on MI tuning, I don't know if it influences, but something smells bad to me. And I'll try 12-56, any brand that doesn't have the 3rd string wound? thanks for your time and knowledge!
This is how to play the song Black Sabbath written by Black Sabbath from the band Black Sabbath on their album Black Sabbath with Black Sabbath records on a Black Sabbath.
any chance you could make a video on Proton Lander by Spaceslug?
Hey Steve, do you think 12-62 strings are the best fit for B standard? I’m using a Burly Slinky (11-52) set currently on my SG but it’s hard to keep notes in tune unless I’m fretting super lightly. Thanks!
I do think 12-62 is just about ideal for me in B. Sometimes I use 12-56. Anything lighter is too light for 24.75” scale imo.
I would not even bother with 11-52 for B standard. I tried it a few times and I had the same issue as well with intonation. 12-62 was the way to go for me. Some people even go a little thicker even for 6 string.
Looks like a artist series
Still waiting for Does It Doom to sell wooden thimbles for the end of your middle and ring fingers, in order to get that real Iommi sound.
Iommic life complete…
Hello sir. I've been having a tuning issue with a guitar that's being stubborn. Could I perhaps send you a more detailed message and get your opinion? I love your channel, I'll buy something from your store etc etc to support your cause. Cheers
Sure man. Send me a DM on one of the other social platforms or shoot me an email at steve@doesitdoom.com
The moment we tony iommi on this channel……………………
Sounds wonderful, but I'm confused. I thought I needed a baritone guitar to play in B Standard. ¿Have you made any modification? Thank you.
B-Standard on a 24.75” scale, non baritone guitar is fairly common these days, especially in doom metal and stoner rock. Just need to increase your string gauge to compensate for the reduced string tension. In this video I’ve got 12-62 strings on the guitar.
@@DoesItDoom I have an Epiphone SG Pro in the same scale and I use to play in C# with my band but I'm always thinking on going lower. I will try not so far in the future. Thank you very much!
B standard is about as low as you can go on a 24.75" guitar, yeah like Steve said you need heavy strings. If you have a 25.5" guitar, that would probably be better for B, but your SG can handle B just fine with some chunky strings. Just make sure to check your intonation and set up after restringing.
Hi man, what humbuckers would you recommend for the style? something more paf type or something more modern and with more output?
Something that sounds loud as fuck preferably.
Wow, this version is sick, as the young dudes would say!!!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼😂😂😂
Thanks Chris!
oh, so electric wizard
🧙🏻♂️
Now low tune Ozzie’s voice
Be pretty cool if Black Sabbath was played in G# standard. If only a sludge doom band from Baton Rouge had a handful of Sabbath songs covered in that tuning.
Incredible covers!
What band would that be?
@@themetalheadguy_666 Thou
@@DoesItDoom I'll check em out. Thanks man!
First thing I did when I got my guitar tuned to B is to play Iron Man but an octave lower since the lowest note on the riff is B
Hi, whats string dia do you use fro B standart?
12-56 to 13-62, depending on how much tension you like. You might want to consider a wound 3rd string as well.
@@DoesItDoom Thank you so much. Today tryed Dunlop 12-54, and dont like tension (its not strong) Let me try DDT DR 13-62.
Slayer uses this a lot
🤘❤️🔥💥
Thanks Chris!

Black Sabbath first two albums were in the key of E standard then they played in C# on the rest of there albums.
MOR, V4, SBS, and Sabotage are in C#, TE and NSD were back to E-std.
@@DoesItDoom You are right, they went back to E standard for the last two, TE and NSD. It's terrible to say I checked out after my favorite Sabbath album SBS. As time went on I revisited the last two and there were some good songs in there I just never learned them🤘
@@frankperricone2065 that’s probably true for most of us! Some great riffs on those two albums though.
@@DoesItDoom 👍
Type O Negative covered this and they tune down B as well
I'm going to cheat and pull out a 7string for this one...
Nice!
Over all it sounds great, but that solo just doesn't scream and wail like it should when in b-Standard.
this is exactly why i keep saing there's no better tuning for metal/doom than B standard.
A/A# is too low/sounds like its trying too hard to be heavy and C/C# feels kinda nu-metaly emo to me so no thanks.
STUPID QUESTION: I'm a 61 year old drummer raised on Sabbath, why do You try to ad gear to replicate a simple low tech sound instead of just use simple low tech old school gear ???
My drums are virtually as simple today as they were when I was a kid.
When i saw Sabbath back in 2016 they opened with Black Sabbath and was notoriusly downtuned. Shit sounded so fucking heavy.
I dont like it in this tuning 😅...but thats okay...its just me✌️
I agree... should have gone lower.
@@DoesItDoom Haha your the best man 😂😂👍👍...no i realy like it just in e standard...but its just me...i grew up with this song ..my mother heard it so i am used to it my whole life. In another tuning it just sound wrong to my brain 😅😅..i tried to play all the songs of the first album with my c# master of reality tuning on my SG...but it felt wrong to me..dont take me too serious ...i am a strange guy 😅
