Behind the Wall of Sleep starts out in the key of B-Major and features a full B-Major E-form bar chord along with a cool, jazzy quartal of stacked 4ths. It then transitions to B-Minor for the intro riff before modulating to A-Minor and then back again. It makes use of the B Natural Minor Scale {R, M2, b3, p4, p5, b6, b7} and the A Blues Scale {R, b3, p4, b5, p5, b7}.

This song loses alot of momentum after the beginning. Could you re write it? So it stays up beat and keeps that coastal flavor it seems to have.
I did not know what a unison bend was called. Now I know! In Iommi we trust.
Signature Iommi move!
Damn ! Sabbath is just timeless untouchable riffage of doom! I could watch this all night to get some insight of Tony's style. LOVE IT! CHEERS!
Thanks Steve! Totally agree. Glad you liked the lesson.
Steve this was one of the first Sabbath songs a learned Toni Iommi was more of a blues player in the early days He will always be The Godfather of Metal he is the Riff Master great lesson Steve.
I remember playing it as a kid as well. Hadn't played it in many years so was fun to revisit and re-learn with the help of live footage.
@@DoesItDoom very jazz influenced. Played with Jethro Tull very briefly. Him and Bill Ward played in Mythology together.
I like your lessons you have a passion in what you do and that is the most important thing
Thanks so much. Glad you like the lessons. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
absolute favorite sabbath song
Guess I know what I’m learning today 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 thanks so much for the lessons on all my favorite bands and songs.
Awesome! Hope the lesson is helpful.
THE TONE IS AWESOME😀
My favorite black Sabbath song beautiful ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️
Behind the wall of sleep and wicked world are awesome tracks off of that first record.ozzys vocals on wicked world are great!
I play a bit of bass. Just started guitar today. I chose this tune because I know it on bass. With this lesson it took roughly an hour to master.
Thank you. Great lesson.
Glad to hear that!
Ended up purchasing a 2010 SG Classic just so I can get a similar tone to this with the P90's. Great stuff man!
P90’s are key to the tone for sure.
couldve just bought some p90's but i respect the commitment
@@malakai.2025 LOL well I was in the market for an SG anyway.
Hell Yeah! Thank You for this lesson! I recently acquired a Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra and will now put it to good use! 🤘👽🤘👁👁🤘👺
Great!
Excellent lesson to watch on a sunny Sunday.
Have a great day man!
Thanks for the lesson, Doom Metal Adam Jones.
Learned this song 25 years ago, I still play it for finger excercise.
This is one of the best guitar tones I’ve heard on your channel Steve.
Really appreciate that! The OD is prototype of something we’ve been working on.
Good stuff man. My fav album is debut sabbath and wall of sleep my fav song, love this video.. tnx..
Nice tone on that guitar!
nailed the tone
I love SG model guitar. ❤️
good job on replicating that guitar tone 👍
Thanks Lester! Tried to get it as close as I could.
Thanks!
Much appreciated! Glad you enjoyed it.
damn that song is perfect
Such a classic!
I recently discovered your channel and loving it. Everything is top notch, video/sound, editing, guitar tone, etc. I really dig your teaching style, very straightforward and easy to follow. Cheers man!
Thanks Gregory. Really glad hit line the content!
sick stuff thanks
Sure thing. Thanks for watching.
great lesson! Love this song 🤟🔥
Glad you liked it! Classic tune.
Great lesson Steve, you can never have too much Iommi!!!🤘🤘🤘
Thanks, Chris. That’s certainly my sentiments! 🐐🐐🐐
Nice lesson, gonna pick up my guitar now🤘
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
sweet guitar!
My t shirt is tingling of joy 🤘😎 Doom on! 🐢
haha. Glad you liked it, Dario.
Great lesson and tone!
Thanks man! 🤘🏻🐐
I fucking love this track thank you. Been playing most of it wrong lol
Hope the lesson was helpful!
Very cool
Steve , sos un maestro, felicitaciones por tu trabajo y tu canal , necesito tener tus pedales acá en Argentina así reina el Doom🤘🐏
¡Me alegro de que te gusten las lecciones y los pedales! Gracias por ver.
Awesome bro , thanks. I love this song and album🤘
Such a masterpiece! Thanks for watching.
@@DoesItDoom Absolutely! Can never get enough Sabbath!!!🤘
Thank you!
Sure thing, Joe. Thanks for watching!
Awesome
Did you see the Epiphone SG Traditional Pro Electric Guitar Metallic gold at Musicians friend. The 1961 g-400 is rarely available on Amazon.
Did not.
That SG is so clean! Great lesson as usual, keep it up man : )
Thanks, Daniel. Glad you enjoyed the lesson! I bought and sold a few of these waiting on the right one. This was the keeper.
where did you find it? Its a very nice guitar and it is the one i want but they are just so expensive.
@@cole4767 Reverb several years ago.
thats where im currently looking. Anyways did you use any pedals? Your tone is very close
@@cole4767 yes, the pedal in this video is a prototype of something we have been developing. Will be released later this year.
Nailed it again! I was laughing out loud with delight just watching....going to be working on this one....by the way, P90 pickups used on a lot of iommi's work? I know the epiphone iommi signature guitar had customized gibson "iommi" pickups...I have a couple humbucker sized P90 pickups (Alnico V and Alnico2) that I'm thinking of putting in one of my SG's.... Thanks So Much!!!
Thanks, Jim! Glad you enjoyed the lesson. Classic Ozzy-era Iommi tone is coming from an overwound (maybe) / wax potted p90 in the bridge position. It started life as a stock p90 but was modified by John Birch.
Great song, great lesson, Iommi is the man, it would be cool if you did a lesson on symptom of the universe, hole in the sky and killing your self to live, really like those songs 🤘🏻
All such awesome choices. Hope to cover them all here before all here at some point along the way.
great lesson really enjoy the application of music theory to the song structure - fun learning tool
Glad you liked the lesson!
Oh man, was this the Walpurgis?!!! I just ordered one and I can't wait to play with it! What amp were you using for this vid?
Funny enough it was! Was one of the prototypes from earlier this year.
Any lessons on Evil Woman (Don't You Play Your Games With Me) originally by Crow?
Haven't done that one.
Just wondering, have you ever posted any Soilent Green tutorials? The Sewn Mouth Secrets album is on constant rotation over here!
Amazing band! Huge fan growing up. Never have learned any of their songs (probably too fast for me, lol). Has never actually been requested. There used to be some amazing lesson videos on the internet of Brian Patton teaching some riffs around the time Inevitable Collapse in the... was released but they disappeared long ago.
Incredible band and song for sure! Thanks so much for watching as always!
Where did you get that tony flag?!?🤩

I agree with the comment below, this is one of the best tones yet! What amp and reverb did you use? It sounds spot on!
Thanks Nick! Was playing through a prototype OD pedal we’ve been working on that should be out later this year. Amp was an Orange OR120 set clean and reverb was setup on the Two Notes Torpedo CAB M.
This was great, Steve : you introduced me to the QUARTAL CHORD and B MINOR SCALE. Do you know if Iommi was "schooled" in both...? Or did he cook his tasty riffs straight from the can...? 😜
Iommi originally came from a blues and jazz background. He was a huge fan of Django Reinhardt (jazz) and played in a blues band called Mythology with Bill before they met Ozzy and Geezer to form Earth. Here is a cool live Mythology performance from the late 60's. They were clearly heavily influence by what Clapton was doing with John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers just a few years prior: ua-cam.com/video/jBnSTO0qHx0/v-deo.html
@@DoesItDoom DUDE !!! : I literally just got "Bluesbreakers" - on vinyl - less than a month ago... holy freakin' synchronicity 🤯
@@_Kid_Corpus_ groundbreaking album. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Cool sound! However, I suggest you use an Expander instead of Noise Gate...doesn't cut in and out so abruptly. Stay Doomy!
🤘🤘
🤘🏻🤘🏻
this might sound dumb but could someone try playing the riff from Ring Ring (juice wrld ft. clever), im so curious to see how it would sound in stoner/doom lol
HAIL DI'AUL 😈!!!!.... BRAVO!!!!!!
Thanks for watching, Daniele!
🤘
Thanks for watching!
The horns say it all 🤘🙂
who is doing the artwork for your channel?
For our pedals you mean?
@@DoesItDoom love your channel man thank you for this information tho!
@@DoesItDoom yes i mean for the pedals and the 'does it doom' logo, i just like the style and doing artwork myself.
Tony used a Fender Strat on the first album. He was hesitant on using the Gibson SG until the Fender Strat had problems, he stuck with the SG then.
The Strat was only used on Wicked World. The rest of the album was done with his SG.
@@DoesItDoom yes, I remember Tony's interview on Gibson Icons on YT he mentioned his Fender had problems, but knew it was on the first album. My memory is fuzzy, I thought it was the whole first album. Wicked World was very jazz influenced. If I remember right, Master of Reality was the first album he tuned down to C# because of his finger tips. And accidently, the birth of doom/stoner genre was born. Some say when they did Symptom of the Universe on Sabotage, it was the inception of thrash metal. Some say Rush started thrash on Necromancer on Caress of Steel. Same year, 1975.
I came looking for solo help. This is cool but it’s pretty dang basic
Standard Tuning? What the Hell?
The first two Sabbath albums are standard tuning…
Pentatonic from the beginning till the end
