You say this mans not a fighter go and have a long walk man.
Teddy was there for every minute of it, you weren't - stfu Teddy knows what the fuck he's talking about. Mike quit against everyone that wasn't a tomato can.
Well a couple points: - if we are being factual wasn't he absent from Tyson's side once Cus died (19)? - then you have to believe that people don't change from when they were 19 That train of logic seems weak to me. Now for the idea that Tyson is 0-5 because they were the fights that Mike was tested. That seems odd because yes Tyson flattened every other person but that discounts those boxers. If the comeback is the only thing that matters
Your right 100 percent ,Tyson done well to make it to an adult. He had a horrific child hood.Kids were sodamised in the detention centre.Tyson learned to fight as a way to survive.Atlas is bitter and jealous Tyson a better man now than Atlas.Atlas had Tyson's upbringing he be in a psych hospital
Mike Tyson lost a child and still stands today as a man with integrity and peace in his heart. Don’t tell me he couldn’t overcome resistance or “fights.” The toughness it takes to grieve your own child is worse than every hard boxing match combined.
Different thing Altogether !!!!! My bset mate lost his daughter at 3 years old and he and his wife were devastated! Almost destroyed his marriage but was able to ACCEPT it and mourn and continue his life and marriage! My best wouldnt get in a fight unless he wa 50pounds heavier than the guy hahaha i boxed for a 15 years and my best mte would junp in ring with me to have alugh and i would bang him with body shot and my mate would roll around on the canvas and then say "thats it ive had enough" hahaha He is not a fight er my mate its not in him when he is hurt and loss and realises he cant win ! Tyson was strong when he was sure he was the superior fighter that say ! When he questioned this he lost it all ! Teddy is !00% on the ball
I lost my daughter a few years ago, and it was the hardest thing I ever went through. A day doesn't go by that I don't morn her death. Mike Tyson also lost a daughter, and he has carried himself with strength and dignity. The man can't even talk about his little girl without weeping. In my opinion, Iron Mike has the heart of a lion.❤
So Mike grew up on the streets running from the mafia without a father, an unsupportive mother, was taken advantage of for him money by those closest to him, had a child pass away, and countless other things.... but he never had to dig deep? Give respect where it is due.
I like Teddy’s logic, but I have to disagree. OUTSIDE the ring Mike has been tested over and over and is still walking tall. The adversity Mike has faced throughout his life would crush 99.99% of men
Teddy is a hater and Mike was a product of his environment and he was fucked up. But he is celebrated today and his one man show on Broadway was good therapy for him. Teddy every one loses a fight it builds character.
Hiding behind walls when he was a kid made him want to strive to reverse that. Holyfield and those other guys made him hide behind those same walls in his mind. His character was already set in stone.
Teddy is spot on here. Tyson admitted this himself, not directly tho. There’s a podcast where mike tyson speaks of muhammad ali and gets emotional. Ali is the prime example of a fighter overcoming adversity; the george foreman fight. In the podcast Tyson says: “that’s the part where he overshines me” with that referring to the fighter’s mentality he then continued saying “he’s willing to die in there, I’m not willing to die in there”. It’s a really touching moment, highly recommend to watch that podcast.
In the ring yes not outside of the ring and thats what destroyed tyson.as for ted hes always been jealous of mikes relationship with cus and pulled a gun on him when he was 13 years old.the stupidity hes talking is ridiculous how many fights did ali lose 5 so was he only in 5 fights.what a twat
@@leehaslam5751 liston, frazier, foreman, ken norton, to name a few. ali met resistance from all-time greay fighters, dug deep, and beat them. tyson found a way to get lost when the guy across from him wasn't scared of him. when tyson's intimidation didnt work, tyson had nothing else to go to. ali did.
Absolutely. He has evolved into one of the coolest fucking people I've ever seen in my life. Seriously. I've kinda followed him closely over the last few years and he is really quite a guy.
Tyson overcame addiction, the death of his child, no parents or family I'd say that was some of the hardest situations any man would face. He overcame I'd say
Mike is an inspiration! Everybody sees the fighter but what Mike went through in life would have certainly crushed most people a lot earlier - and he overcame it finding somewhat like peace within himself! This makes him an inspiration for me!
It fueled em. But teddy didnt say Tyson didn't overcame that situation. He understands people love Tyson and look at him as a demi god. He didn't say he wasn't great. He just pointed out the fact that Tyson couldn't beat anyone who wasn't intimated by him lol ala evander holyfield
What Teddy is saying could hold true for the last part of Mike's career when he was only boxing for money and didn't have that hunger anymore. But life dealt him a bad hand man. From a boy who grew up on the streets and never knew any love from his parents to achieving something great in his career and being a good dad now. Mike Tyson has come a long way and he deserves all the credit for that.
Yeah but then life handed him a good hand. He was adopted by a man who had already trained 2 World Champion fighters and shared with Mike the structure and discipline principles that make a successful person. He became successful and turned on 2 out of the 3 people most responsible for HELPING him. Lets not pretend that Tyson did this on his own. 100% of the reason Tyson was who he was - His new environment. Without that help, the man is never heard of. People act like he made himself successful WITHOUT ANYONE ELSE, facing all sorts of adversity like eminem.
Mike achieved greatness, but he has a troubled soul , throughout his entire life he has been fighting his demons...the Cus Catskill environment helped him, but it never cured him of his inner problems.(he was fighting in school and touching girls even then,)..he recently beat up a guy on a plane for verbally pushing him to far....Mike is a good guy and we wish him the best.
I understand what Teddy is trying to say, HOWEVER, he cannot deny that Mike has been through a hella lot in his life. THAT is why I have the utmost respect for Mike.
John Gluck no, I don’t respect THAT. Look at Mike’s OVERALL life u idiot. U realize where he came from? His influences when he was younger? His tormenting childhood? Evil people using him just for his money? Yet, after experiencing all this, he decides to make a serious change after his boxing career. Look at the man he is NOW. Get the fuck out of here. Pin pointing on one point of his life.
John Gluck Say whatever u want. In the end, your entitled to your own opinion. I don’t want to spend my time going back and forth with an ignorant person who has a complete negative mindset on an individual such as Mike Tyson, who is trying to better himself. Have a nice day.
If Cus would have lived just five more years and Kevin Rooney would have been in Mikes corner throughout his whole career Mike would have never been beaten. He was the best to ever step inside the ring. Hands down.
shangrila73eldorado He only said that to confirm he did the right thing. More recently, he of course stated the truth saying how he might’ve stayed focused and continued fighting at such a high level with Kevin Rooney
Daveyboy _ I guess buddy. I take it you’re disagreeing with me. That’s fine. Everyone has their own opinion. But there’s no denying that Tyson had unreal skill, power and speed that no one before or after him has even came close to matching. And he no doubt would have maybe never lost if Cus D’amato hadn’t passed so soon in his pro career and if Kevin Rooney had remained his trainer throughout his entire career. Don King destroyed the story of the greatest heavyweight to ever lace up a pair of gloves.
This is one of the many reasons that I will continue to watch JRE! Not only is Joe, a well educated man, among many different aspects, but he also shows why he got into this in the first place, with interviews like this! His capability to just sit back and listen and learn, is truly admiring!! I know more than a handful of people that would have interrupted on many occasions while Teddy was talking, Joe has the upmost respect to soak it in like a sponge! Bravo, Joe!
I think if you look at Tyson and the man he's become today, it's clear to see that his whole life has been about fighting and overcoming adversity. I don't agree with Teddy's characterization of him at all.
@J W Why don't I agree? Please reread my original post. Also, if you know about their relationship you'd know they had beef in the past and that has obviously tainted TA's view of Tyson.
He's talking about overcoming ring adversity in the moment, in the ring. He was right. Mike couldn't fight back once he got hurt. Look Ali, Frazier, Foreman against Lyle- , against Jimmy Young, Foreman got off the canvas against Lyle. These guys kept fighting in the ring. Mike no. Mike didn't comeback after getting punched.
Obviously now Mike is different and has changed for the better, what Teddy is talking about is about the past. And lets be objective, I believe everything Teddy said, if you looked at old vids of Tyson you would probably agree. Now Mike has become a wonderful person. what Teddy is talking about has alot of wisdom for not just Tyson but for the everyone.
I actually think Teddy is spot on here, as Mikes big turn around as a human being came after his fighting career. Go and analyze Mikes losses, he just got frustrated and outworked in his losses when his ways didn't work. Of course he wasn't training and studying like he used to, but deep down I think he got scared and underperformed when the going got tough. He overcame that only after his active boxing career was over.
No I don't either ! Everything about Tyson is a warior in my opinion . If he had stayed with Rooney and kept his discipline , and didn't go down the road of addiction he would of been the goat
I don't think I've ever seen Joe stay silent for as long as he did in this video. He really let the guy talk as long as he wanted. I can't believe I'm witnessing this.
He does stay silent often relative to other podcast hosts. i like how he keeps the conversation casual but has the interviewer approach of staying quit so the guest can speak more
This is the interview that showed that Joe is the best podcaster/conversationalist out there. Another interviewer would've ruined it by interjecting and not letting Teddy finish his whole train of thought. Just a masterclass of communication.
He never said he didn't...he merely pointed out the fact that the best win on Tyson's record is probably his win over a 38 year old Larry Holmes who had been retired for 2 years after 2 consecutive losses to a light heavyweight, and was all but paid to take a dive.
@@brucesmith54 Best win......... Larry Holmes!!! Really?? I think you're forgetting the rest of the heavyweight division at the time. Tyson tore through it and became the heavyweight division.
@@brucesmith54 Well for some memory problems and dementia are growing concerns in todays society! lol Just of the top of my head...... Berbick, Thomas, Smith, Spinks, Bruno, Biggs, Williams. Didn't even have to mention Larry! All fully grown men. All considered exceptional boxers. All thought they could beat this 20 year old kid. I guess he played his part in making them "unforgettable" lol
I get what Teddy is saying; but I dont think its totally fair.. Yes Tyson lost some key fights to Lewis, Holyfield.. But he was in quite a few competitive fights; where he had to dig a bit deeper to win.. His wins over Razor Ruddock, Tony Tucker and Francois Botha come to mind.
Naw, I think you missed his point. Teddy is saying that the Mike Tyson that grew up hiding in the streets never stopped hiding. Mike never learned how to overcome his character flaw. Mike never beat himself when he had a chance to grow past whatever was holding him back from becoming a better version of himself.
@@thedevilsadvocate3710 - thats fair enough i get that.. But Teddy was still equating that to Tyson's boxing career.. 0-5 in real fights?? C'mon thats unfair. Yes Tyson did not handle the upper echelon of champions, ie Lewis, Holyfield. Yes Tyson destroyed 35 or 40 guys who were shaking in their boots.. But there was another smaller group maybe 5 or 6 guys who gave Tyson a competitive fight. And Tyson did not get frustrated, did not foul out of the fight, he went on to win those fights where the guy was putting up a bit of a challenge. Some of his decent wins against decent fighters are not given enough credit IMO. Thats basically what I am saying.
What's insane. Hunger fist fights with high school kids. For 💰. They get beat these tough sons, go home & dad says" what happened to you" some young kid named Tyson. Dad " were does he live. Everywhere I guess homeless. Dad finds him, Does the wrong thing. Now Mike is 12, KICKED the crap out of this Boy's father! " true story from the mouth of the KO ARTIST" LOVE U MIKE. This is when Mike was very happy, from digging in Trash cans, fighting like a 🐕, to walking through Some of the most exclusive Realestate on the East Cost! " BIG SMILE ON THIS WARRIOR"
In the end Tyson became the true warriors he always preached about. The man struggles with addiction, his past and trying to find himself. I think he is fighting daily and winning and on the days he doesn’t, he gets up and keeps fighting.

Teddy Atlas is in error, Mike Tyson is 1-5. Teddy pulled in Mike's early life and implied it was a source of Mikes failures. But Teddy fails to chalk-up Mike's current history - Mike is a winner as he goes through life today, he handles himself well and reflects humbly on his past - Mike is winning the most important part of his life, that which he is living today. Thumbs up to a great person - Mike Tyson. by Slade Kitchens
Daren Kitchens I think Teddy was just talking about his boxing career. You are absolutely correct though about Tyson’s turn around. In life he is a champion.
flyinglizards80 I’m sitting on a park bench, in Copley Sq in Boston one day, on my lunch break. I got my headphones on and AC/DC in my ears. I got a Boston Herald that I got at the CVS across the street and some Burger King. I’m just minding my own business. There’s a group of guys (4 or 5) from The Nation of Islam literally right behind me. So I turn down the music because I’m wondering what the hell they could be talking about. The conversation was about pigeons. I spun head around and there’s Mike Tyson telling these guys everything there is to know about pigeons. I remembered someone once showing him how he used to raise pigeons. This went on for minutes. The whole group of them starts to walk away. For some stupid reason, I don’t know why I say “Hey Mike thanks for the education, I come here every day on my lunch break and I’ve always wondered about the pigeons” (which was true there were thousands of them there) He turns and looks at me and I’m looking right into those eyes. My heart stopped, I’m thinking run, before I know it he’s rounded the park bench and was right in front of me and I got no place to go. He’s says calmly and politely says What’s your name”, so I answered (not in my best voice either). He says “You’re very lucky to have a place like this, it’s amazing”. Then stuck out his hand to shake mine. It was like shaking hands with someone that was wearing a catchers mitt. I said something like it was great to meet him. He walked away. I found out later he was in Boston for a mandatory psych evaluation after he bit Holyfield. Sorry for being long however there are 2 types of people in this world. Those that can teach and those that can’t. We can say a lot about Mike Tyson, I can safely say he can put on a clinic about everything you wanted to know about pigeons and do it well. I used to laugh when I heard him talk, since then I now just listen. Most of the time he’s actually saying some real good truths.
The MAN Mike is TODAY, in my mind he did overcome everything!!! And THAT was the BIGGEST fight which he's still fighting today. He's still a will always be the undisputed heavyweight champ we knew!!!
This man has the absolute most passion for his profession he has a ability to speak in a way that inspires you that's probably what made him a great trainer and coach
The death of Cus was the turning point in Mike's boxing career and life. From that point on he just kept bad people around him with no positive guidance.
I agree. The deaths of Cus and then Jimmy Jacobs in '88 were turning points. Both men and especially Cus were the only father figures in Mike's life. It was like he lost a father twice. At any age that's rough but especially if you're in your early 20s. People that disagree have probably never experienced that. Once he left Kevin Rooney it was pretty much all downhill from there sadly. Tyson will always be my favorite boxer of all time.
Corey Parker he was dumbfounded by how dumb this guy is... right in some points. Wrong in many others Tyson overcame and was more successful than this guy could ever dream of.
My father was a writer for many years with Sports Illustrated. He first met Cus in the 1950’s and became very good friends with him. They talked all the time. Shortly after Cus first got Mike into the ring , Cus called my dad and said that he has a 13 year old kid who will end up being the youngest heavyweight of all time. Cus was 100 percent convinced. Cus also thought that Mike could end up being the greatest of all time but he said that there were too many variables to make that claim. Here is my view on what happened with Mike. He loved and worshipped Cus. And Mike also liked and respected greatly his manager, Jimmy Jacobs. Mike ended up losing Cus and Jimmy at a young age (21). Jimmy and Cus (especially Cus) could tell Mike what to do and he would do it. Without either one of them around, the limit to which Mike would listen to his trainers diminished over time. To a degree he became uncontrollable and unteachable and that became his downfall. That does not mean I don’t respect what Mike achieved. But I do think that if Cus had lived a longer life Mike would have achieved even more.
Absolutely Spot On,Tyson Said That Cus Was The 1st White Guy Who Didn’t Judge Him👊🏾💯🏅🏆🏅💯👊🏾Awesome That Your Dad Knew Cus,Bet He’s Got Some Great Story’s.

There are words to describe somebody like that. "Narcissist" and "compulsive liar" come to mind. Teddy's just bitter and butthurt and talking a lot of shit
Except its 100% bullshit, the part about Mike failing 5 times and winning 0. Because had he not lost at all he would have to say Mike was 0-0 and never been in a fight. And he has to apply that to literally every other boxer ever. If they never lost that means they failed when they were actually tested?? And if they never lost then they were never tested?? His logic makes no sense and contradicts itself so badly.

He's in no position to disagree, so he shuts up. It's a skill we should all learn but it's hard. Joe Rogan is a fan, Teddy Atlas was his trainer. Tyson was never a warrior. Teddy knows warriors and he'd say if the guy was ready to go to war. He was never in one, because he disengaged every time he had the chance. If the other guy didn't go down quickly, he went down.
A rare and essential skill for a good interviewer. Make it about the guest, not yourself. Let them shine, or let them hang themselves. The instinct to shut up and let them talk is something that someone like Fallon is completely devoid of. Interesting perspective though.
@black panther i know. If it was about my father, id describe his hard work ethic, unwavering morals and etc. Those same morals he taught me. To celebrate a rapist is disgusting. Teddy is dead right though. I had a little league coach that told me the same thing. We won like 12 games, or whatever it was back then, with no losses one year. My coach told us, "we looked good but we didn't learn a damn thing about who we are!" As little kids, we had no idea at the time what he was talking about. Once I was in college and playing ball, it hit me like a ton of bricks, though. You learn nothing until you have to suffer, until you take a loss, get knocked down and have to get back up. That's when you learn what you're made of and who you really are, not from being victorious!

Teddy Atlas is always very insightful , but when it comes to Tyson , you see the dark and hypocritical side of Teddy Atlas. 1. Teddy Atlas was born to a wealthy family , he was not from the streets but CHOSE to be in the streets. He has gotten into street fights , been arrested numerous times, took part in an Armed Robbery .But as usually with wealthy, Cus'd amato and his dad got him off the hook .He pointed a gun to a 17 yr old Tyson's ear , fired the gun and threatened to murder him if he touched her niece again. THen he tried to murder Donny Lalonde , a fighter that fired him as a trainer.Teddy waited for him with a loaded gun outside his New York apartment but luckily Lalonde never arrived. He knocked his door but nobody opened.Teddy himself admits that if " “If he had opened the door, he was dead. I would have pulled the trigger, turned around, and walked away,” Lalonde never even found out about it for years but when he did , he said ""It actually didn't even surprise me when I heard it. Teddy got into fights with trainers and fighters quite a bit when I was with him. He may not be the most stable person walking , a 'certifiable nutcase'. He was suspended by espn in 2008 for almost bursting up a producer for Espn boxing....... SO WHO IS HE to go around judging people like that???Every time they have part ways with a fighter under Unamicable terms, he has trashed their reputations , calling them mentally weak and not been even that good. He talks a good game but histoty doesn't lie. Tyson was was on the streets...no father , mother and then Teddy Atlas calls him mentally weak for hiding in abounded warehouses to avoid bullies . HE WAS A KID with no where to go. At any given time Teddy could gone to the comfort of his loving home in his teenage years . It could be YOU Teddy ,that is mentally weak for not accepting rejection and not getting your way. How about you take on that 'challenge and Overcame" that obstacle and let bygones be bygones like when Mike Tyson came over before a fight to shake you hand and apologize for what he had done wrong to you.
I was around NY then and saw Teddy make Donny a fighter. Donny couldn't even move before Teddy came in and I'm barely exaggerating. If you were able to see Donny before Teddy and then after, you'd start to develop a realistic appreciation of the man's abilities. So then he gets his payday and tells Teddy to go f himself. I woulda killed him. You're basically calling Teddy out for doing nothing. He woulda... Well, he didn't. He was allowed to go back there to kill Donny wasn't he? Maybe no one ever did anything to you to warrant being murdered. Good for you. The essence of your whole point is that Teddy shouldn't judge and you bring that to light by doing a negative highlight reel on a guy while being completely judgmental. Holding a gun to someone's head for being rapey, mouthing off at some ESPN worker, whether he needed to resort to street-life as a necessity or choice, it all adds up to shit and hardly a damning legacy. Sure, Teddy is rigid. Every relationship in boxing falling apart doesn't reflect well on him. He's always been a very quirky and strange guy. I agree with what he saying mike was a physical specimen but he was not dead game...the term dead game comes from dog fighting meaning a dog that would fight to the death and never give up...fighting is not just throwing fist its spiritual u not really fighting until u meet resistance...he is talking about the spiritual aspect of fighting a person can be a great fighter without throwing a punch we all fight at some point in life that resistance is gonna come to us...
I always come back and listen to this clip and have two observations: 1). Teddy is speaking absolute truth here and gives a million dollars worth of insight on life. 2). Rogan is a master. Doesn’t cut Teddy off and let’s him go. There’s not another interviewer on the planet who would have been able to let someone talk without interjecting or sidetrack the conversation. BTW, I was not a fan of Tyson much until he changed course a few years ago. I’m his biggest supporter now and admire his turnaround.
tyson lost all hard fights. he is so overrated i cant believe it. and people are saying, that he would beat ali. smh, what a sad and idiotic statement.
I dont think he's Top 5. Maybe as far as impact at a time when the heavyweight divison was terrible. But he was a force and a beast, But Im not sure what happened with his niece. But still too say he wasnt a great fighter is blasphemy. Dude has been overcoming obstacles his whole life. By the worlds standards he's a fighter. He gets knocked down and everytime he got back up and fought back. Refused to give up. For that alone hes a beast in my book but just not top 5 in the ring
TroystonB I actually see Tyson at the gym all the time and extremely nice guy to everyone, but if we are gonna speak about morons then we should also take a moment and mention a moron name troyston with a fuckface that I can bet money is still virgin. Keypad warrior
Teddy is wrong. Mike didn’t bite Evander to get out of the fight. He bit him because of the head butts and the repetitive low blows, and the referee doing absolutely nothing about it. It was frustration, not cowardice.
By your logic razor ruddock would have been justified in biting mikes ear after the 50 low blows that mike hit him with in both fights ! So you’re wrong, Mike bit the ear cuz he was mentally weak and couldn’t find a way to win so he got a stoppage on antics, Norton broke Ali’s jaw but Ali found a way. Hopkins was 42 fighting guys half his age but he found a way. Marciano had 1 eye shut , behind in points in the 2nd to last round BUT he found a way to defeat Walcott. Tyson never had that kind of character and didn’t feel compelled to develop it cuz he had sycophant yes-men and casual boxing fans like you in his corner telling him he was invincible.... while he was getting k.o’d 😂

Forget where Mike came from... Think about this: Mike says that he was scared to death before EVERY SINGLE fight. For him to do what he did despite being scared is absolutely the mark of a Champion. There’s nothing Teddy’s ever done in his life to the level that Mike did. You said it yourself; life is like a fight and is about the obstacles one has overcome. What have YOU overcome, Teddy? Thought so. If you switched roles and had to go through what he went through, would we have ever heard of you? Would you have even survived???
His father a doctor aswell so you'd imagine he had a comfortable living if he wanted to or at the least had a safety net....Mike tyson had none of that....what makes teddy a fighter? He pulled a gun on a year old ...the man has no right to talk 😂😂
Wasn't Teddy Atlas stabbed in the face as a kid? Then went onto to train like 7-8 world champions? Man, I dunno, but it sounds like the guy has been pretty successful.
If being scared and fighting anyway were the mark of champion I'm pretty sure that would mean every boxer who isn't deranged or suicidal is a champion.
Actually in 1986, Mike Tyson had a fight with Jose Ribalta scheduled for 10 rounds, it went all 10 and he won. Another set of back to back fights the same year in 1986 against James Tillis and Mitch Green that he won on scorecard decision after having gone the full 10 rounds of 10 distance. So to the contrary, he has faced fights where he's definitely been tested for the distance and won without a quick knockout, having to show mental fortitude and endurance to forge through adversity. Secondly, I would argue that it's not necessarily overcoming adversity in one particular fight that determines a great fighter. It can be losing the fight altogether but how one comes back from that loss for the next fight, that also determines a great fighter. So yes he lost to Buster Douglas but he was able to regain the heavyweight championship title belt again. That's the sign of a fighter. A great fighter. Not many can come back after losing the belt to regain it again. There have only been seven fighters in the history of boxing to ever lose and regain the heavyweight title and you're telling me that doesn't show passing adversity? Especially over the duration of the six years (and a jail sentence) it took for the time between losing the title and winning it again. Teddy Atlas is a great boxing mind and has contributed a lot to the sport, but I disagree with him here and I think most would, even without bias.
Why is it when someone gives honest criticism, they're being a "hater" or "bitter"? Maybe he just has more experience than most with Tyson and had a different opinion?
He meant strictly in terms of boxing, as a fighter , in the ring. 0-5. When Holyfield and Lewis fought back and weren’t intimidated, Tyson couldn’t show up. That’s what Teddy is bringing up.
@The middle ground what's the predicate of your sentence. the noun is my so silly(i dont own a so silly, but i'll indulge you and pretend i do).... so what about my so silly?
@Jacqueline Sevilla You maybe don't understand what you're talking about. He seems alright now. Teddy is talking about Tyson when he was fighting. No real father, mother was a prostitute, spent time in juve for committing heinous crimes. Picked up by a boxing trainer who pushed him to an insane level physically and mentally for all his formative years. No life, no friends, no childhood, few life skills, just training and fighting against adults in the ring to fulfill an old man's dying dream. Then this new parent also died and he was left to the sharks and the whores; robbed by the people who got rich off his fights, accused and convicted of rape, labeled a rapist for ever. Had marriages that not only failed but with famous ex-wives who told the entire world how terrible Tyson was as a person. Despite sacrificing most of his life to boxing, still humbled repeatedly in the ring by underdog boxers. Gained a reputation as a cheater, a bully, a dirty fighter who could only win against weak and scared boxers, even known as a quitter who could dish it out but not take it. Went bankrupt less than a year after his last win in the ring. Would anyone actually be jealous of this life, let alone Teddy Atlas?
Atlas held a gun to Tyson's head when Tyson was just 15. If Teddy was a fighter and he had had it with Tyson, he would've strapped on the gloves. But he came at a kid with a gun, like a punk.
@@anthonycapitan5802 He came with a gun because basically he told Mike that he would kill him if he touched his sister. He brought a gun because he wasn't kidding around.Does that make sense?Do you have a sister? You're probably very young, otherwise you wouldn't have said what you said.
@@jamesgraham3116 Teddy is a supposed fighter who, at the age of 27, fired a gun next to the ear of a 15 year old after the latter made a lude comment/ sexual solicitation to his 11 year old sister. So rather than school a kid who obviously learned no respect from his parents on how to respect females, he shoots a gun off by his ear in a bullshit show of dominance because the kid would destroy him in a fight if he squared up with him. I wonder if Atlas' doctor father would've shot a gun off by by his son's ear if he found out he'd made a lude comment to a girl, or whether Teddy learned that two-bit thug move on his own? I worked in a group home like the one Tyson went to for over three years. People grow to lack all respect and empathy when people don't show them any respect or empathy. There are rare sociopaths out there that can't be brought back, but Tyson obviously wasn't one of them, and Teddy's bullshit intimidation is the absolute worst kind of lesson for a kid on the edge, and his assertion that he's some kind of fighter and Tyson wasn't is laughable, considering how he was scared of a 15 year old at the age of 27.
Teddy still has resentment towards Tyson....i can see where he is coming from, but he still greatly downplays Tyson's achievements; To say Tyson had only 5 real fights in which he failed, is just false, even if you look at it from his point of view : The Tillis fight was a real fight with effective resistance, the the Jose Ribalta was a tough fight also, as were the fights with Bone crusher Smith, and other fights he had as well. I don't have to like Tyson to admit his achievements in the ring, but give credit, where credit is due.
sivedan I don’t think you understood what Teddy was saying. He’s referring to fights where Tyson literally had to dig deep and adjust to overcome his opponent. Those fights he’s describing are exactly that. He didn’t really know how to and it comes full circle to his days as a teen where he just hid between the walls instead of facing his fears. Instead Tyson used intimidation and nothing else.
If you have a women and a greedy manager who manipulates you, lost your father-like mentor 2 times, being in jail and still succeed in the ring the and trying to move forward in life, I think the warrior's heart is right there. Teddy's argument is invalid since he stated if you are hiding between the walls at the age of 12, you are hiding your whole life. Is he hiding now? No he isnt, pretty much the opposite, he is telling his difficulties to the public and showing in public places continually.
teddys saying as tough as he was one of the best , he was a scared weak abused baby inside .and instead of facing it ..reverts back to his old ways.......
Bentruth Uncovers his point wasn’t that Tyson lost full stop, as you say almost all fighters lose at some point but he was outlining the fact that Tyson lost any time he was faced with adversity (in teddy’s opinion) whereas those other greats overcame adversity and won some or lost some but left it all in the ring, rather than losing it and biting ears or becoming lethargic after being fought back against, even fighters thought to be nowhere near Tyson’s level like buster Douglas put up a fight and gave him something to overcome and beat Tyson handily apart from being dropped despite not being on the same skill level.
Yeah, this guy was kind of talking talking out of his ass. He basically said, "Well, he lost 5 fights, and that's proof that he couldn't overcome resistance. So he wasn't a good fighter" For that argument to make sense you have to prove that he never encountered resistance when he did overcome, and he didn't even touch that subject.
HE WAS SAYING MIKE LOST ALL HIS BIGGEST FIGHTS. MOST OF MIKES EARLY ROUND KO'S CAME FROM OPPONENTS WHO WERE TERRIFIED OF MIKE BUT WHEN HE GOT IN THERE WITH A FIGHTER THAT WASN'T AFRAID OF HIM TYSON CAME UP SHORT

Lamont T One thing I would say is Tyson's career went downhill after Spinks. The Tyson that lost those biggest fights wasn't near that level, his best had already passed.
Empty Rhetoric The Tyson that lost those fights was a shell of his former self. The Tyson after prison was fighting for the money and nothing else. He's even said that he didn't really care at that point in his life.

Exactly man teddy is still upset that tyson disrespected his girl and that was back in the fucking 80s. It takes strength to acknowledge that desperate people do desperate things and to just roll with it.
Teddy has been hurt, man. He has a lot of pain in his heart. Look at Mike now. After all the pain, robbery, suffering, bullying he's a happy man. He doesn't badmouth anyone. He has peace. He's content. He had it all, lost it all and got it back again. That's a winner for me. Maybe ted should smoke some of his product.
Teddy is spot on when it came to Mikes career as a boxer. Teddy wasn’t taking away from Mikes physical greatness as an athlete, but it takes more than having physical greatness to be a great champion. And Mike didn’t have the other part of what makes a great champion great, and that’s heart. What drove Mike was rage, not heart, rage only lasts so long. But I will say Mike has now become “that man” who has endured and overcome adversity not with rage but with heart. I admire Mike now more than I did watching him in his prime as a boxer. Mike now is a great champion in life! God bless him.
Yeah I get what the dude was saying too, it wasn't that deep. That was the weirdest bit of uninterrupted conversation I've ever experienced from a Joe Rogan podcast.
Mark of a good interviewer. They know when to shut up and let their guest talk. I've seen so many interviewers on UA-cam interrupt with stupid questions -- Joe knows better. And I agree, Mr. Atlas is not a profound thinker, but he has a knack for dramatic narrative. Joe let the drama go, as he should have. If you want profound, it's generally not wise to listen to sports personalities. Don't get me wrong. Joe HAS been known to interview badly. I remember a recent interview with a female neurologist where he just went ON and ON and ON. Would NOT shut up and let the woman share her expertise. So Joe can be spotty, but in this instance, he was good.
I love Joe. You know your going to get a true reaction from him. And he knows when to shut up. I had to stop listening to this. As a big boxing fan I wanna listen to the whole thing tomorrow.
If Cus D'Amato had stayed alive, Mike would have had the direction and support he needed to beat Holyfield, Lewis and Douglas. He was always insecure and looked to Cus to guide him in everything he did. I believe his greatness died with Cus.
You're exactly right. I think even if he stayed with Rooney he'd have reached greater heights too. I wish don't king would have been hit by a truck before he ever met Mike.
Point is even with 50 - 5 saying all 50 were no fights is disrespectful for all opponents as well. Tyson won so none of them challenged him. No one was able to make it a fight... Yeah sure. It is a fight when you loose and if you win an athletic showcase. Bullshit
I don't think he is hating. He just knew Mike at a different time, a time we didn't. He had to pull a gun on Mike as Mike was sexually abusing his daughter. He knew Mike was a physical monster but a bully, and when he ever met resistance he crumpled. Teddy made very clear what his idea of a fighter was, and what he says makes sense - Tyson was a physical monster, great boxer, but not a fighter. Tyson crumpled many times in his career when he wasn't able to run thru his competition. The Vitor Belfort of boxing - spectacular hammer and poor nail. Rocky Balboa he was not.

Mikes had to dig deep in life definitely. but this guy is talking about being in a fight. theres different types of grit and fight.... and i have to say, in the boxing ring, i agree with Teddy. ive seen every Tyson fight thats ever on tape, amateur and pro.and ive never seen him overcome anything in the ring... and ive seen many times him seemingly look for ways out. i dont recall a time he ever overcame a serious crisis in the ring. so i agree with Teddy here. i love mike more than almost everyone, but lets be real, lets not get salty because we support him. he's overcome a lot in life and fought at life... but purely "in ring", i agree with Teddy
I wansnt even born yet when he lost. But I watching his podcast, he was explaining how he didn’t workout and didn’t take Buster Douglas serious. (Excuse me if I got the name wrong 😆.)
Just because Mike made most fights appear easy, doesn't mean he never overcame adversity. We don't know how many injuries he fought threw, we can't feel the shots. Only Mike knows when he overcame adversity
Hes got a lot of baggage with Mike. He held a revolver to the guys head after Mike touched a relative of Atlas and said he would kill him. Atlas released a lot of emotion, but i dont think many really agree with him. Poetic for sure, but it doesnt describe Mike.
Tyson was doing great up until 1991 when Tyson was wrongfully sent to prison for 6 years and robbed him of his career, he was never the same when he got out. Prison took something out of him, which he never recovered from in my eyes. I think Tyson done great considering what he over come in life. Mike Tyson has turned into a better man now that he is away from boxing and the hungers on are gone, who just wanted his money. Tyson is a legend of the sport that reached the heights that only other people could dream of. Could he of done better? I think so. Teddy will always be bitter towards Tyson and I think Tyson has tried to make amends, but not sure Teddy wants to makeup.
He spent 3 years in prison not 6. Mike could have gone down as the best ever, but it wasn't to be. Probably the most exciting heavyweight ever, but no where near the best.
He was upset one time, he came back and was tested twice... and won twice... against Razor Ruddock. He was set up for a dream match against Hollyfield when he was sent to prison.
Tyson going to prison was an example of his weakness as a person. Instead of focusing on being the best and keeping the right people around him (which he already had in place) he allowed negative people to take control and drive him down the tubes.
Teddy is judging Mike as a man and i dont think he is correct. Mike has been through plenty of pain and he is now peaceful and kind. He is a strong character. He was a kid in a world of liars and evil, of course he misbehaved. But he is a fighter, and a proper man. Teddy is being disrespectful by not giving respect where its due. Mikes life would bend and crush most people, but not him. Hes the fukin man
After watching the Mike Tyson interview and Mike saying he doesn't even like thinking about boxing anymore. That he hates that that guy he was back then. Would Teddy now consider him one and five? That Tyson finally won the fight he has been fighting his whole life and it was against his own demon/ Ego.
This guy is full of shit, I believe no one should criticize someone's failure's if he hasn't achieved much himself. WHo the fuck is Teddy Atlas anyway? His name won't be remembered after he's gone. However, Mike Tyson's name will go down as one of the greatest boxer's in history.

You do realise manny is pretty much regarded as the greatest trainer of all time... you're stupid dude. Sure teddy isn't on mannys level but he still has a very GREAT career as a trainer. He has trained countless world champions.
He's always been green with envy about Tyson, and tbf most of his views on boxing are laughable. For someone so involved in the sport for so long, his apparent lack of understanding of it is astounding
I don’t think anyone is understanding what he’s saying. He’s not taking away from how great Mike was, he said it. What he’s saying is that Mike didn’t have the mental toughness he disguised with the tough guy facade. mike himself has said he was always scared, past his fighting years. What teddy is saying is that he faced his inner demons, he’d be 5-0 because he had the greatness and mental toughness. Now, i agree teddy should let it go as it clearly bothers him, but Mike got away with some horrendous acts in his younger days. Just paid people off. Or when mike did something to Teddy’s niece, teddy put a gun on him. He was a very fucked up human but I’m hoping mike has faced those demons and come to peace with himself.
Mikes hardest fight has been his life, Teddy has his side but Mike had a childhood nobody would get out of easy. I see what teddy is saying but Tyson is easily one one the greatest fighters, his losses were partly mental and unpreparedness as well as the evil yes men he had around him inflating his ego since cus. You can see it in Mike, he didn't care about winning when he realized nobody truly cared about him.
Great comment! Tyson needed structure and discipline and the only person that appeared to provide that for him happened to be one of the greatest heavyweight trainers ever. No, disrespect to Teddy but I wonder if he was able to articulate this level of knowledge 30 years ago or did Cus feel like he was incapable of making an emotional connection Mike.
For me this is bone chilling true, and shows why children must have parents who raise them in an environment that teaches strength, responsibility embraced by accountability and unconditional love. Very important and sadly forgotten. God bless Atlas and Tyson.
I completely disagree. On many things he said, but he doesn't have a degrees in Psychology or Sociology so he hasn't really got the understand to make an accurate knowledge assessment/ statement. I know this is about boxing but I think of it like this right there's a man called Carlos Rosado who has the highest degree of belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which is red which is awarded in lieu of a ninth an tenth degree black belt & you have more chance of aliens being real than someone getting to that stage of BJJ & then imagine someone coming in to that person an after knowing about BJJ for 1 day & that person is saying they're better than them & trying to show the that person how to do it right when they've been doing it for a god damn day. So Teddy isn't qualified to accurately say that, although he has an opinion but it for sure isn't right! He hasn't got a real understanding of what he's speaking off, I always thought he is a great trainer but he is nonetheless wrong though! Anyone with the actual knowledge would say the same.

Well a couple points:
- if we are being factual wasn't he absent from Tyson's side once Cus died (19)?
- then you have to believe that people don't change from when they were 19
That train of logic seems weak to me.

Mike is an inspiration! Everybody sees the fighter but what Mike went through in life would have certainly crushed most people a lot earlier - and he overcame it finding somewhat like peace within himself! This makes him an inspiration for me!
And now he'll be back into the ring, healthier than ever (as mindset)

Looking at where Mike is in life today , he is the example of a overcomer.
An overcomer is a nice word

I’ve watched this so many times to remind me how to handle set backs! Wise words
Wow so tyson is now a father to his parents? Only Mike could achieve that lol I know it's a typo for the record

I know more than a handful of people that would have interrupted on many occasions while Teddy was talking, Joe has the upmost respect to soak it in like a sponge! Bravo, Joe!
Joe understands and implements the saying, "God gave us two ears and one mouth", not the other way around.

@@brucesmith54 Best win......... Larry Holmes!!! Really?? I think you're forgetting the rest of the heavyweight division at the time. Tyson tore through it and became the heavyweight division.

Yeah I remember Tucker giving Tyson a run for his money. You're correct!
But he was always on top in those fights, Tucker landed one decent shot and the others were stubborn but Tyson was always in control.
Thank you Teddy!
But there was another smaller group maybe 5 or 6 guys who gave Tyson a competitive fight. flyinglizards80 I’m sitting on a park bench, in Copley Sq in Boston one day, on my lunch break.
For some stupid reason, I don’t know why I say “Hey Mike thanks for the education, I come here every day on my lunch break and I’ve always wondered about the pigeons” (which was true there were thousands of them there)
He turns and looks at me and I’m looking right into those eyes.
Most of the time he’s actually saying some real good truths.

hankskiAR15 fact.

Teddy is obviously smarter than Rogan. Rogan tends to listen to guests 30x smarter than him.
Rogan is a perfect podcaster, he knows when to chip in, when to just stay silent.
That's a first, LOL.
Very Very well said. I agree with your take 100%
AGREE 100%%%. Cus kept Mike mentally focused and that's a hard task to do especially with everything he experienced
Also add in bipolar disorder, and Mike had a ton to overcome.

The unfortunate events that occured in his youth Tyson even admits this, hes lived with a fearful victim mentality his whole life. It was through no choice of his own ofcourse.
Ironically, Teddy doesn't realise that he was being tested as a man, with Mike the child and he failed.
Mike needed Teddy greatly at that point of conflict between them, for guidance, stability and to be shown the right way to become, not just a great fighter, but a great man.
I don't agree with what Mike did, but he was a child with emotional & behavioural issues.....that needed help......that help should of come from Teddy more than anyone else, because of how close Teddy was to Mike and seeing first hand the issues Mike needed mentoring through.
What other reason would Cus have for getting rid of Teddy?
Cus knew Mike needed help, not more conflict.
Cus kicked him after teddy pulled a gun on Mike for messin with some younger younger kids when he was like 17..(15 not 17)
Teddy may or may not agree with that, but that wasn't what was being spoken about.

@@vodgod7229 Cus didnt kick him, Teddy left on his own because Cus was too defensive on Mike, which was against all his teachings about discipline. Which shows at the end of the day Teddy was right. Lack of discipline self destroyed Tyson.
Tyson was the only person that could beat Tyson. He was unbeatable in the late 80s.

But you have back-lashed yourself into an unreasonable position on the man.
JohnLoCicero Tyson wasn't just rapey. He was either accused of or committed sexual assault multiple times:

I always come back and listen to this clip and have two observations:
In other words..

But still too say he wasnt a great fighter is blasphemy. Dude has been overcoming obstacles his whole life. By the worlds standards he's a fighter. If being scared and fighting anyway were the mark of champion I'm pretty sure that would mean every boxer who isn't deranged or suicidal is a champion.
Let him be he is just bitter
Mitch green was a drug abuser gang banger and the other guys are no names. What great fighter did Mike Tyson beat???

I'm not a die hard Tyson fan, I like him. But wtf is teddy atlas saying?
sivedan totally agree !!

Dunno teddy, all due respect but great fighters get beaten, ali, frazier, foreman, louis all got beaten, still great fighters, tyson too
Bentruth Uncovers his point wasn’t that Tyson lost full stop, as you say almost all fighters lose at some point but he was outlining the fact that Tyson lost any time he was faced with adversity (in teddy’s opinion) whereas those other greats overcame adversity and won some or lost some but left it all in the ring, rather than losing it and biting ears or becoming lethargic after being fought back against, even fighters thought to be nowhere near Tyson’s level like buster Douglas put up a fight and gave him something to overcome and beat Tyson handily apart from being dropped despite not being on the same skill level.

And I agree, Mr. Atlas is not a profound thinker, but he has a knack for dramatic narrative. Joe let the drama go, as he should have. If you want profound, it's generally not wise to listen to sports personalities. Don't get me wrong. Joe HAS been known to interview badly.
Floyd Patterson (twice)
Bob Foster
Joe Frazier (twice)
George Foreman
Ken Norton (twice)
Give me a list of great hall of fame boxers Mike Tyson beat I'll wait?
Teddy Atlas telling the truth about yo hero Mike Tyson who you worship
Last I checked telling truth isn't hating
@@StackhouseJerryBoth Tyson and Holyfield have 6 losses to their records. Nothing said is factual.
"when you're not a great guy... you can recognize when somebody is. Thats your greatest talent."
Teddy been salty because cus picked mike over teddy when they had their altercation.
Mikes had to dig deep in life definitely. but this guy is talking about being in a fight. theres different types of grit and fight.... and i have to say, in the boxing ring, i agree with Teddy. ive seen every Tyson fight thats ever on tape, amateur and pro.and ive never seen him overcome anything in the ring... and ive seen many times him seemingly look for ways out.
i dont recall a time he ever overcame a serious crisis in the ring.
so i agree with Teddy here. i love mike more than almost everyone, but lets be real, lets not get salty because we support him. he's overcome a lot in life and fought at life... but purely "in ring", i agree with Teddy
he sounds bitter
@Say less seen it :)
Mark Townsend This
@Darren Mcclean brooo most people do not know this
Atlas is spot on and Mike admits it in the end. His head and heart were not in it before his first loss.
Only Mike knows when he overcame adversity
someone with a brain several fighters he beat that were champions shit some undefeated guess they bums too
This might be my favorite Rogan interview. It was soo powerful to sit in complete silence, and let Teddy release all that.
Yeah release all that bitterness
Hes got a lot of baggage with Mike. He held a revolver to the guys head after Mike touched a relative of Atlas and said he would kill him. Atlas released a lot of emotion, but i dont think many really agree with him. Poetic for sure, but it doesnt describe Mike.
@@johnfoley5810 mostly truth though.... bitter or not
Tyson was doing great up until 1991 when Tyson was wrongfully sent to prison for 6 years and robbed him of his career, he was never the same when he got out.
Tyson was finished before prison. From the 1st Bruno fight onward he just became a head hunter with an incompetent corner to guide him.
Well the Douglas fight was fixed, Tyson knocked Douglas out in that fight.
Robin Givens and Don King ruined Mike Tyson. The fire went out.
But in his prime, he was the Heavyweight
Champion of the World.
WOW, Machia your one dumb dude
Aquarius
Lol
Herb Dee for me and for a lot of people he’s the greatest, boxe never was so big and exiting before or since tyson
you can blame the robbers for robbing a house but at some point you're gotta turn to the homeowner and ask him about his part in him getting robbed.
@@Daz912 the mans got a point. Teddy is a bitter old man, listen to this man speak hes full of shit. Mike was the heavyweight champ of the world.. whether he hid between buildings as a kid is irrelevant he was the baddest man on the planet at his time
Not to mention that roughly five or so years ago mike actually went to Teddy Atlas and made amends. Teddy is a piece of shit. All respect lost.
@@Daz912 yup and this fucking dude is saying "who teddy atlas" lol if you dont know who teddy atlas is then your opinion is no longer valid
@shogun harlem So based on your logic, the only way to be considered a decent trainer is to have a legacy such as manny stewarts? You do realise manny is pretty much regarded as the greatest trainer of all time... you're stupid dude. Sure teddy isn't on mannys level but he still has a very GREAT career as a trainer. He has trained countless world champions.
Wow it's amazing this man whole life and the number of people he fought and this guy narrows his life and fights to 0 and 5. Let it go Teddy.
Atlas didn't watch Rudduck or Tucker. Atlas holds that grudge like an Atlas though.
@@deadarmd Exactly both of those guys were tough as fuck. Definitely top heavy weights and far from being bums.
I think Ur the one not understanding him here, and giving him WAY too much credit, not everyone else getting it wrong haha 😂
👏👏
Great comment! Tyson needed structure and discipline and the only person that appeared to provide that for him happened to be one of the greatest heavyweight trainers ever. No, disrespect to Teddy but I wonder if he was able to articulate this level of knowledge 30 years ago or did Cus feel like he was incapable of making an emotional connection Mike.
Yep.
No he just couldnt beat great fighters.
@@joshuatraffanstedt2695 where were those great fighters when mike was at his best with rooney?
He expended a lot of energy to tell us how small Mike Tyson is.
Exactly - sounds like envy... If he just stated his point and moved on, okay. BUT he kept going with a list of stuff in his past...
@@dallasteague001 teddy is a hater, plain and simple
For me this is bone chilling true, and shows why children must have parents who raise them in an environment that teaches strength, responsibility embraced by accountability and unconditional love. Very important and sadly forgotten. God bless Atlas and Tyson.
That aint bone chilling true. Smh
@@tchalla6305 it’s his point of view.
@@tchalla6305 jesus dude let it go for ten seconds would you.. Not everyone is your enemy
